Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Logan, NM

Ute Lake State Park allows pets at all campground loops while offering electric hookups and water for campers with dogs. Multiple developed campgrounds within the park including Logan, Yucca, Zia, New Cottonwood, Roadrunner, and Eagle Point accommodate both tent and RV camping for visitors traveling with pets. Camping sites feature picnic tables, fire rings, and some have wind breaker walls for protection during gusty conditions. Most RV sites are pull-through style with 50-amp electrical service, though visitors note the electrical hookups can provide inconsistent output. The lake provides excellent opportunities for dogs to cool off, though owners should be prepared for abundant stickers and burrs that can embed in pet fur. Several sites near Logan, New Mexico are featured on The Dyrt.

Ute Lake's 2.4-mile nature trail accessible from Logan campground provides a dog-friendly hiking option with several lake viewing areas along the path. Pet owners should pack extra water during summer months as temperatures can be extreme, and the desert environment presents potential hazards including goatheads and sand burrs that can injure paws. Morning bird watching with dogs is particularly rewarding as the area attracts numerous species including wild turkeys, cranes, geese and ducks that frequent the shoreline. Dogs must remain leashed in all campground areas to protect wildlife and other campers. Bathrooms and shower facilities are typically available during peak season but may be closed during winter months, with only vault toilets accessible in off-season periods. The small town of Logan provides basic supplies with a Dollar General store nearby.

    Blaze-In-Saddle RV Park

    Nice area, great employees!

We are spending one night at this campground, we got here a little later than desired, but the office was still open. After check in we were guided to our spot and they even helped us park. There are light poles all over, great for walking at night, not so much for driving a rig through, so the extra help was appreciated. There are horse stalls here, as well as a dog park.

    Blaze-In-Saddle RV Park

    Kiddy up!

This is a horse and human RV park.  There is a horse hotel, Laundry, and dog park on site.  Our site was level on a moderate size rock pad.  A fire ring or picnic table was not provided.  We did have FHU with 30 amp service.  The nearest grocery store was within 5 miles.  This park does offer WiFi which had great speeds!

    Tucumcari KOA

Great for a 1 night stay

We pulled in last night and the check in was fast and easy. This is a journey KOA, so it’s not much in the way of amenities. That being said, this is one of the better “Journey KOA’s” we’ve stayed at. It’s got a descent little park for the kids, bathrooms, showers, a laundry mat and a dog park for your dogs. The store is closed for covid but they have a dinner and breakfast menu that you can call in and they’ll deliver to your site.

Cove Campground — Conchas Lake State Park

    Semi desert by the Lake

We stayed here primarily because it was on our route to Northern New Mexico and Colorado. It was exactly as we expected and we enjoyed an overnight here in June. Fortunately we had electric power for AC and were comfortable. Enjoyed some short hikes right from our campsite. Very isolated location between Tucumcari and Las Vegas, New Mexico, but that was our intended route. Marginal highway, but almost no traffic.

    Blaze-In-Saddle RV Park

    Safe, Open and Comfortable

If you are moving along RT 66/I-40, perfect place to hold up for the night. It is quiet and provides everything you need. If it is your first taste of camping in the West, if feels like what you would expect. Open scenery; beautiful night and morning skies. There might be a few full timers on the east end of the property, but they generally keep their areas well kept. There is a dog park if yours are friendly, mine are not. But there is an open grassy area at the front of the property. This campground worked well for us.

Bell Point Campground — Conchas Lake State Park

    Conchas Trip 2021

Love the views of Conchas lake! Clean and open space! Electric and water connections! No fires allowed during our trip. Fishing, hiking and boating! Pet friendly, our dog loved every minute of our trip! Great memories!

    Blaze-In-Saddle RV Park

    Great stopover

Park is clean and neat and offers a great view of the Tucumcari Mountain. Three retired brothers own it and it is well kept. It has several horse corrals and a barn with two stalls and pens. There is a small dog park (dirt/gravel) The park is a large gravel lot with level, marked sites offering full hookup and 30 and 50 amp service. We were escorted to our site and given great service. It is near to US 40, but far enough away to not hear much of the traffic. Sits off old Route 66 and nearby Tucumcari is a fun place to see old Rte 66 businesses with their neon on at night. Lots of murals around town. Some parts of town have seen better days, but made for an interesting drive through to look. We had good cell service and they did have wifi. Not sure I would want to spend a week here, but it was a great place for a one-night stopover!

Logan Park — Ute Lake State Park

    Great Desert Camping, nice lake

This is a great place to hang out on the weekend in Eastern New Mexico. The water is great and it's pretty clean lake. When the wind kicks up it can get pretty rough but overall nice. The grounds are well taken care of as well. I would recommend staying on the South side of the lake if you like it quiet, you can also find more "trees". Try to keep your elevation low because the wind always blows in New Mexico.

    Blaze-In-Saddle RV Park

    Perfect for our overnight stay

Campground is easy to access.  Was the perfect spot for an overnight stop before continuing on to our final destination.    Water pressure  (95 psi, so use caution) was excellent for filling tanks.   They have an small isolated fenced in area which is great for letting pets run and air.

The campground host was very friendly.  He waited 15 minutes past close to provide instruction.  (If checking in after hours, they will leave the information outside the office in a box).

Am saving this location for future stops.

Guide to Logan

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Ute Lake State Park offers excellent fishing for walleye, bass, catfish, and crappie. "Great place to go in summer nice campground lake gets busy with boats on weekends," notes Jeremy A.

Wildlife viewing: Morning and evening hours provide prime wildlife observation times. "The lake is very rich in birds. Lots of them. We watched hundreds of cranes, geese, ducks, and many more... In the morning we had 10 grazing turkeys outside our RV," shares Mats at Yucca Campground.

Water recreation: The lake's shoreline allows for multiple access points for swimming and boating. "Ute Lake campground had nice large pull through sites, a shaded picnic area, and nice views of the lake. The playground was very nice and shaded," writes Kelli P.

Exploring Route 66: Located about 40 minutes from Logan, Tucumcari offers historic Route 66 attractions. "If you want to unhook you can drive into Tucumcari and see some fun Route 66 landmarks," suggests Sarah R. from Mountain Road RV Park.

What campers like

Affordable camping: Zia Campground offers budget-friendly sites with good amenities. "Paved roads leading to campground and extra long hard beaten gravel trails to campsites made this campground easy to pull our 30ft airstream into even after dark... spots 9-15 have 50 and water plus long 50' driveway," reports Jolene C.

Accessible shoreline: The gradual slope into the water makes it easy for pets and children. "Unique little campground run by the state park right on Utay Lake beautiful beach is on the lake you can walk out for a long distance due to the shallowness," shares gaetan S. at New Cottonwood Campground.

Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain well-kept bathrooms and showers. "Clean, beautifully kept, covered tables with wind breaker wall. Such a nice place. Park ranger is friendly. Showers clean and well kept. Pull thru sites, water views. $14.00 day for full hook ups! Bargain!" exclaims Angela M.

Nature trails: The 2.4-mile park nature trail connects different camping areas. "The CG has a trailhead for the 2.4 mile park nature walk. It's a nice trail, with several lake viewing areas along it," writes Ray & Terri F.

What you should know

Seasonal facility limitations: Bathroom availability changes throughout the year. "Only downside is the pit toilet was the only thing open. The actual bathrooms are closed for the winter," reports Buddy P. who stayed at Ute Lake State Park.

Weather considerations: Strong winds are common in this region. "Sites are side by side with a small gap in between. The lake is walking distance from camp but can not see it from site 27. All in all it's very nice. Pick nic tables, a pavilion, grill, fire ring, water, electric plus showers and bathroom all for $15 a night," notes Bob K.

Cell service information: Most major carriers work well in the area. "AT&T coverage was really good, with 4 Bars of LTE service and speeds up to 27 MB/s. Since there are few trees, satellite coverage is not an issue," shares Ray & Terri F.

Vegetation hazards: Sand burrs and stickers can be problematic. "Our dog didn't encounter too many sand burrs on the trail, but be advised, the evil little things are everywhere else and imbed themselves in everything," warns a camper.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Logan Park offers playground facilities for children. "The playground was very nice and shaded," mentions Kelli P.

Beach activities: The lake's gradually sloping shoreline creates safe swimming areas. "Oasis... beautiful beach is on the lake you can walk out for a long distance due to the shallowness it's a Damned reservoir the water is super nice lots of places to swim," shares gaetan S.

Protection from elements: Select sites with windbreaks during spring and early summer. "Each site has a cement picnic table under a shelter. The ground is pebbles. A good spot for one night," explains Terry D. who stayed at Eagle Point.

Supplies planning: Limited shopping options exist in Logan. "There is a small grocery in Logan, but their selection is limited," notes Ray & Terri F., so bring essential supplies for your pet friendly camping trip near Logan.

Tips from RVers

Water pressure awareness: Empty Saddle RV Park in nearby Tucumcari requires pressure regulators. "The water pressure is high so you will need a pressure limiter on your system but not to worry, they will let you use one for free or buy one if you want," advises Dan S.

Site selection: Choose pull-through sites for easier access. "Ute Lake campground had nice large pull through sites, a shaded picnic area, and nice views of the lake," reports Kelli P.

Electrical considerations: Be prepared for potential power limitations. "We were disappointed that the electrical hookups did not provide consistent output. We were unable to run our AC while the refrigerator was on, and the other camper we spoke to had the same issues," cautions a reviewer.

Dump station location: Note that dump facilities are centralized. "There is no dump station at the Logan CG, the only dump station is near the main office, several miles back down the road," mentions Ray & Terri F.
