Camping cabins near Stone Harbor, New Jersey offer convenient access to a 7-mile barrier island known for pristine beaches and the Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary. Located on the Cape May Peninsula, the area experiences milder temperatures than inland locations due to maritime influence. Summer humidity levels frequently exceed 70%, creating conditions where properly ventilated accommodations become essential for comfort.
What to do
Wildlife viewing at Cape May Point: Visit the Cape May Bird Observatory where migration seasons bring diverse species. Sun Outdoors Cape May is a convenient base for nature enthusiasts. "We've stayed here 2 years in a row. We returned due to all the activities the campground offers for the kids... The campground is a short 5 minute drive from Cape May. Which is also a big reason we've returned," shares Dave R.
Biking coastal trails: Explore the 11-mile rail trail located across from Ocean View Resort Campground. "Despite the shutdowns with Corona, they made every attempt to hold activities every day. You had to sign up for pool slots, but there was plenty of openings. There is an 11 mile rail trail across the street as well," notes Joel A.
Historical exploration: Discover Cape Henlopen State Park's military history with WWII observation towers offering panoramic views. "As a former military installation, there are lots of military historical items and sites. Underground bunkers and batteries and such. There's a wonderful observation tower built on top of one of these that affords beautiful 360 degree views," explains Lisa B.
What campers like
Cabin amenities: At Shellbay Campgrounds, cabin rentals feature air conditioning and heat. "Looking for a trip to the Jersey shore (near Stone Harbor, Avalon, Wildwood, Cape May, & more) - look no further than Shellbay Camping Resort. Great sites for camping with electric and water, seasonal sites with water, electric and sewer hookups and extremely well maintained grounds," reports Suzi S.
Water activities: Beachcomber Camping Resort offers multiple water features popular with cabin guests. "They have an arcade, laundromat, lakes with beach space, pools, a tugboat, golf carts, hay rides, bonfires, a playground, activities, etc. Went with two young children and we had a blast," notes Victoria K.
Off-season options: Several campgrounds operate year-round or have extended seasons. "We visited off season (early April) and absolutely loved it. The location was great and the beaches are quiet. I hear it gets packed and I see that it's hard to book if you don't book early," shares Chris G. about Cape Henlopen State Park.
What you should know
Seasonal operations: Most cabin rentals follow seasonal schedules with limited winter availability. Ocean City Campground operates primarily during summer months. A reviewer notes: "Sites are very nice n level. Beautiful landscaping. Gravel under the trailer and small river rock around the picnic table and fire pit."
Reservation requirements: Advance booking is essential during peak periods. "This is a VERY busy campground. Rigs in and out daily and nearly always full. None of the sites are level. Sites are mostly small and close together. The closer you are to the camp store, the louder and busier it is," Adam and Suzanne B. report about Cape Henlopen State Park.
Transportation options: Many campgrounds permit golf carts with rentals available. "We had a blast with a golf cart rental. The campground is rather large, so it felt like a necessity to having a secondary way of getting around easily as a family. Plus it made checking out the entire campground manageable," explains Dave R. from Sun Outdoors Cape May.
Tips for camping with families
Water features: Choose cabins near splash pads for added entertainment. Ocean View Resort Campground receives praise from families. "First time camping at the Jersey shore. This campground had it all from a huge pool and unbelievable splash pad to a great swimming pond with a beach! They just completed a new camp store building that has everything you could think of," shares Ray L.
Off-site attractions: Schedule visits to nearby attractions such as the Cape May Zoo. "We stayed in site 148(old#SO4)... The front of the park is close to the pool and store- if pool noise is a concern you should stay further back. A mix of seasonal,'cabins' and overnight camping. Park was very clean. Reasonably easy access to Cape May attractions," notes Steve W. from Sun Outdoors Cape May.
Beach logistics: Most cabin sites require a short drive to beaches. "We were very pleased with the size of our site. The campground was quiet and the bathhouses were clean. We happened to be there when it was 100 degrees so we definitely noticed that the bathhouses weren't air conditioned," explains Becca U.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Request sites away from high-traffic areas for more privacy in cabin accommodations. "The sites are all a good size and even though the campsite is usually always packed, everyone is super friendly and respectful of each other. People respect the rules and keep to themselves, but will wave and say hello a lot in passing," Amanda R. observes about Cape Henlopen State Park.
Laundry facilities: Not all cabin accommodations provide laundry access. "Bathhouses were clean and well maintained. The campground is a short 5 minute drive from Cape May. Which is also a big reason we've returned. Sunset Beach, The Open Air Mall, and the charm of victorian Cape May are all great reasons to visit," explains Dave R.
Amenities worth paying for: Consider premium cabin locations for convenience. "Definitely would camp here again. Staff was great. Plenty of things for the kids to do," notes Arnold M. about Ocean View Resort Campground.
