What to do
Explore Franconia Notch trails: Cannon Mountain RV Park serves as an excellent base for hiking. "The 8.8 mile multi-use (bike/pedestrian) recreation trail runs on the far side of Echo Lake through Franconia Notch State Park. In the winter, there's skiing at Cannon Mountain," notes one camper at Cannon Mountain RV Park.
Waterfront activities: Enjoy lake and river recreation throughout the region. At Newfound RV Park, campers can "explore Newfound lake from, as well as the Mill Fudge Factory." For river activities, Country Bumpkins Campground offers "spots for both campers and tents right along the river."
Winter recreation: Some campgrounds cater to cold-weather activities. "Perfect for ski bums. Access to xcs, downhill, and snow machine trails," says a reviewer about Cannon Mountain RV Park, one of the few facilities with extended season options.
What campers like
Private wooded sites: Many campgrounds offer secluded camping experiences. At Moose Hillock Camping Resort, "the sites are private and wooded, the grounds are beautiful, the natural pond is a great morning excursion. It's one of the prettiest campgrounds I've ever seen."
Quiet settings: Smaller campgrounds provide peaceful environments. "This is one of our favorite trips every year! The campground is small, only 7 sites, but located at the base of Cannon mountain nestled next to Echo lake it's simply breathtaking," reports a camper at Cannon Mountain RV Park.
Family-friendly amenities: Campgrounds often include recreational facilities for all ages. Sugar Ridge RV Village & Campground has "everything! Horse carriage rides, paved roads, 2 pools, playgrounds, mini golf, fireworks," according to one reviewer.
What you should know
Site spacing varies: Campgrounds differ significantly in site size and privacy. At Country Bumpkins Campground, some campers report that the "sites on the main part of the river are close but still felt private," while others note that in some areas sites are "WAY TOO CLOSE to other campsites. They really pack it in to get the most they can out of this property."
Terrain challenges: Many campgrounds feature hilly landscapes. At Moose Hillock, "the hilly terrain is insaneeee! If you have never been before, book a sight as close as possible to the pool and office, because the further you get, the higher the altitude."
Seasonal limitations: Most facilities have restricted operating seasons. River Meadow Campground operates during warmer months when visitors can take advantage of water activities: "It's right on the CT river and they have canoes to rent. My friend and I took my son fishing and we landed some nice size fish."
Tips for camping with families
Look for campgrounds with planned activities: Some campgrounds schedule regular events. "They keep the campers busy with fun activities for kids and grown ups," notes a visitor at River Meadow Campground RV Park.
Consider campgrounds with water features: Pools and water activities rank high with families. Moose Hillock features "a huge pool and water slides. Our site (camper trailer) was one of the largest sites we've stayed in. They also did a great job of maintaining the beauty of the mountains and landscape."
Check playground facilities: Recreational options vary by campground. Country Bumpkins has "a huge playground for the kids. Plenty of picnic tables and river access. Centrally located to Franconia Notch SP, Woodstock and Lincoln."
Tips from RVers
Leveling challenges: Prepare for uneven terrain at many sites. At Country Bumpkins, one RVer found their "site #60 was gravel, back in, 30 amp, full hookup. It was slightly uphill, so we had to pull the RV all the way to the front of the site to be able to level."
Electrical service variations: Different campgrounds offer various hookup options. At Newfound RV Park, visitors note they "enjoyed our stay thanks to their laundry facilities, rec room, and quirky owner. It was a great place to explore Newfound lake from, as well as the Mill Fudge Factory. Our site was full hookup and a pull through site."
Internet connectivity concerns: Cell service and WiFi vary dramatically. At Moose Hillock, "no WiFi or cell service except by the pool which can be hard if you need to be contacted. Cable tv at sites was available and intermittent quality."
