      Three Forks KOA Journey

      Nice small KOA

This is a small KOA. Super friendly staff. Sites are shady unless you have a big rig - that area does not have shade. Decent dog park. Decent playground. I did not use the bath house so can’t comment on that. No pool, but did have a nice patio area with tables and chairs behind the store. I just stayed one night as we are on the road home. I do have one complaint and that is the sprinklers that came on overnight - it soaked the chairs and picnic table by our camper. I think the friendliness of the staff and the shady sites are the main reason for 5 stars.

      Toll Mountain Campground

      Pretty Neat

Wow this was a very unique camping experience up in the boulders. Had a lot of fun walking my dogs and cat up in there. (Yes my cat goes camping too). There was no water pumps on the campground, however there is a nice little creek running through that one could get water. Also there were vault toilets and the one we used was closer to the entrance of the campground. It was clean, however the door didn't lock. Really wish we didn't go on a holiday weekend as it sounded like a dirt bike ho-down and wasn't very relaxing. We will try again during the week or a non holiday weekend. The stars were gorgeous, and the bird watching was phenomenal. At least when there weren't dirt bikes.

      Red Mountain (MT)

      Fantastic hosts and beautiful scenery!

Our favorite campground to date! The hosts are wonderful, helpful, and kind people. The area is just beautiful, with the river only a few steps away, and there is plenty of room for people and pets to run and play. Lots of fun hiking trails nearby. Two big loops for campers (one first-come first-serve, one for reservations); the hosts were happy to point out the best spots to accommodate our 36-ft fifth-wheel. Clean restrooms with water spigots at each. We all love everything about this place!

      Mill Creek Campground

Nice quite campground in the Tobacco Root Mountains

Mill Creek is a nice 10 site campground along Mill Creek in the Tobacco Root Mountains. The campground is 7 miles from the town of Sheridan. Note that the sign in Sheridan says the campground is 6 miles away, however it is 6 miles to the forest boundary, then another mile to the campground. The campground features 2 double vault toilets and two hand pump wells for water. This is a well shaded campground due to the large fir and pine trees. In the mile between the forest boundary and the campground about 6 marked primitive campsites can be found as well. Between the 2nd and 3rd campsites is a short trail leading to a large group fire ring with four benches circling it. All the campsites have a picnic table and fire rings. Each site has a large parking area that can easily fit two vehicles. This is grizzle bear territory, food must be stored in your car or the provided bear proof foot locker at the campground.

      Ennis Montana FWP

      Convenient

This campground is conveniently located near downtown Ennis, Montana. While you're close enough to town to run and get coffee in the morning, your spot will feel tucked back by the river. The only downside of this campground is that occasionally throughout the night you can hear cars and semi-trucks passing over the nearby bridge. Our camp spot was close to the bridge so maybe if you were further back in the campground it wouldn't be as noticeable. Across the river, from our camp spot, we could easily see residential homes. They are nice homes but it doesn't give you a completely secluded feeling because of that.

      Grasshopper Campground

      Lovely!!

My family and I had such a blast here. We stayed at a different campground the last time we visited Montana and it wasn’t a very good place, so we definitely did more research beforehand and found that this place was a real gem and it truly was. The lake nearby was incredible. We spent a lot of our time here. We also found some amazing hikes that were less than 30miles away from the campground and they were incredible. Hiking in Montana is amazing and hands down worth it. I’m from Washington where hiking is perfect, but Montana gives it a run for its money. Worth the drive! The campground was clean and well kept. Decent size spaces which was nice. Lots of shade which was awesome!

    Guide to Sheridan

Dispersed camping options near Sheridan, Montana provide access to the Tobacco Root Mountains with elevations ranging from 5,000 to over 10,500 feet. Summer temperatures typically reach the upper 70s with cool nights in the 40s, even during July and August. Fall brings earlier frosts due to the mountainous terrain, with camping season generally ending by mid-October.

    What to do

Hunt for garnets at Ruby Reservoir: The shores of Ruby Reservoir Recreation Area contain garnets that can be found with basic equipment. "This campsite has loads to offer ~ there is access to the reservoir, of course, and along with this comes the garnets lining the shores. It is a perfect adventure for beginners, as all you need is a shovel and some screens to begin your search," notes Hannah S. The garnets are more concentrated in certain areas, typically in the gravelly sections of shoreline.

Visit historic mining towns: When camping near Sheridan, plan a day trip to nearby ghost towns. "Close proximity to Virginia and Nevada cities. Obviously a former KOA with all the accompanying amenities, but slightly lower price. A little close to highway, but quiet at night," writes Kierra B. about her stay at Ruby Valley Campground. Virginia City features restored buildings from the 1860s gold rush era and offers walking tours from May through September.

Soak in hot springs: The Tobacco Root Mountains contain several natural hot springs accessible from camping areas. "We heard about a hot spring called 'Pony Potosi' in Madison County and that is exactly what it is. You have to hike about a half mile to access the hot spring but it is definitely worth it," reports Robin P. from her experience at Potosi Campground. Water temperatures at these springs typically range from 90-105°F depending on rainfall and season.

    What campers like

Riverside camping spots: Campers frequently mention appreciation for sites adjacent to flowing water. "Valley Garden has great sites right on the river to fish! Lots of nice wholes walking both ways on the bank. Also very close to Ennis lake," notes Shawn S. about Valley Garden Campground. Sites 3-7 at Valley Garden provide the most direct water access with enough room for medium-sized tents or small trailers.

Primitive settings with basic amenities: Many campers value the basic facilities available at less developed sites. "The BLM's Ruby Reservoir is a disperse camping area. The only facilities at this campground is a double vault toilet. There is no signage on the highway to indicated the campground," explains Dexter I. These areas typically have rock fire rings rather than metal ones and operate on a pack-it-in, pack-it-out basis for trash.

Relative seclusion: Despite proximity to towns, several camping areas maintain a feeling of remoteness. "This campground was quiet and secluded. The river flows right along the camp ground and made for a nice morning to get up eat breakfast and then fish for a few hours," writes Palmi B. about Valley Garden Campground. Weekday visits, especially Monday through Thursday, typically offer the most solitude even during peak summer months.

    What you should know

Bear safety is essential: The Tobacco Root Mountains and surrounding areas contain both black and grizzly bears. "This is grizzle bear territory, food must be stored in your car or the provided bear proof foot locker at the campground," warns Dexter I. about Mill Creek Campground. Proper food storage is mandatory, and bear spray should be carried on all hikes.

Limited cellular coverage: Most camping areas near Sheridan have spotty or non-existent cell service. "One to 2 bars on at&t or Verizon," reports Craig S. about his stay at Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park. The best connectivity is typically found at higher elevations or when closer to towns like Ennis or Alder.

Weather changes rapidly: Mountain weather conditions can shift quickly, particularly in afternoon hours. "Check weather report, strong winds and we had thunderstorms," advises Mark F. from his experience at Lewis & Clark Caverns. Summer afternoon thunderstorms are common between 2-6pm, often clearing by evening, making morning the most reliable time for outdoor activities.

    Tips for camping with families

Visit caves and become Junior Rangers: Lewis & Clark Caverns offers educational opportunities for children. "Did you know you can print out a packet for your little ones to become Cub Rangers at this State Park? There are great amenities for both camping and RV'S with a child's playground located on the camp," shares Sierra V. from Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park. The Junior Ranger program takes approximately 2-3 hours to complete.

Choose campgrounds with playgrounds: Some camping areas include dedicated play areas for children. "We camped here with a group of families and the playground was nice for the kids. There aren't many trees and the land is flat but we were able to really keep a decent eye of the kids running around because of it," explains Heather about Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park. Most playground equipment is best suited for children ages 5-12.

Bring water recreation gear: During summer months, water activities provide relief from heat. "Spacious sites that aren't on top of one another. Some are right on the water," notes Anne D. about Valley Garden Campground. Water shoes are recommended due to rocky river bottoms, and lifejackets are essential for children as currents can be stronger than they appear.

    Tips from RVers

Look for level sites: Many campgrounds in the area have uneven terrain. "Hardly any water campsites. Almost impossible to level a camper," warns Kelsie M. about Ruby Reservoir Recreation Area. Bringing extra leveling blocks is recommended, particularly for sites along the reservoir shores where slopes can exceed 5% grade.

Check site dimensions before arrival: RV sites vary considerably in size across different campgrounds. "Easy access and off the road so it was quiet. I was in my truck tent so quiet matters to me," notes Happy Jack T. about his stay at Ennis RV Village. While Ennis RV Village accommodates larger rigs up to 45 feet, many forest service sites like Mill Creek limit length to under 25 feet.

Consider campgrounds with full hookups during peak summer: The Sheridan area can experience high temperatures. "Very nice RV Park just on the edge of town. Overlooks a bluff with gorgeous view. Nice level gravel parking pads with a grass rectangle beside each spot," describes Lucile F. about Ennis RV Village. Full hookups allow air conditioning use during July and August when daytime temperatures can reach the upper 80s.
