Bring drinking water!

Already left a review but forgot to mention —about water. I do not recommend getting water from Butte other than from “Ultimate Big Spring Water” which cost $15 for 5gal with a jug. Apparently Butte has occasional toxic leakage into the mains from the Toxic Pits. Very sad and unfortunate. We were weary even getting filtered refill water from Walmart. Either bring your own drinking water or buy bottled. There is an rv park in Pipestone that said they’d allow fill-up there, though not sure what the fee would be, but they’re seemed super nice and willing to help out.

Great spot

Rolled in on Sunday afternoon. Found a spot right by the entrance to the large camping area (approx 1/2mile past railroad tracks on the left). We were exposed from 3 sides, luckily we could park our jeep for privacy block. This is definitely the place that all the locals bring out their quads and dirt bikes on weekends. Daily drive through by park rangers so that was nice. There’s a 16 day limit here and the rangers do keep a close eye on it. And several people do come here to stay for the full limit so it looks like people be living here, but they’re constantly ushered out by rangers. Found several good running/biking trails. The boulders are quite amazing! I could definitely feel bear vibes while on the trails, though we never saw one. Cows did come to our campsite nightly and dig through our fire pit. Several big classA’s in and out. Several other campers running gens all day.

Recommended by a buddy, very nice!

Been in Butte, MT for a few weeks, someone told me about this spot. Very nice, flat spots, lots of fire rings, lots of spots. I'll definitely be back. Please leave the spot as clean or cleaner, to preserve this place. No AT&T service.

Homestake ORV boondocking

Because I pulled in late last night, I just went to the first place that I found group camping. Although it was group, nobody was right on top of each other. The road goes on and on winds around there’s plenty of sites everywhere, I have a truck camper, so it’s almost like having a car. I did see other people that have larger trailers But none of those big ones.

Sitesites are not numbered. They’re just wide open spaces.

Convenient

This place is just a few minutes from the freeway on a relatively good dirt road. There is a big open space that you come to first, which can accommodate a number of RV's. We drove farther up the road and found a more secluded place. It is an OHV area and can be a bit noisy. However, It has excellent cellular coverage and is not far from town. Lots of mountain bike trails nearby. We were there for a couple of nights. Lots of rigs came in just for one night stays.

Nice road

As a single female tent camping I felt very safe here. One morning a bunch of cows came through my site, which was amazing.

Pretty but creepy

It is easy to get to and very nice views. We did have a creepy experience. Three trucks drove by our spot and parked just staring at us and would leave. They did this 3 times before we decided to pack up and go elsewhere. Also saw a bunch of bear poop. I wouldn’t feel comfortable going back.

Great to do an overnight - off the highway stop

The spot was close to the highway - lots of potential spots - some “locals” who seem to live out there and run generators 24/7 - we had no problem and got a good night sleep to carry on our journey.

There are MTB OHV and walking trails nearby.

Easy to get to

It’s easy to get to and there aren’t bad potholes. No problem getting there without 4 wheel drive. I was able to find a pretty private campground by going a little further then the initial parking area.

Great spot

We pulled in for the night on a whim. Nice spot, the road was a little wash boarded. Just made a quick stop off the highway. Nice and quiet.

Popular, spacious

There’s a big area that had a dozen RVs & tents, but it was late & we wanted space so we followed a rough dirt road 1/2 a mile to find a spot in the trees. The Homestake Trailhead down the road has a bathroom. We did have a weird experience: a truck camped near us with two people who openly watched us the entire morning & followed us to the trailhead before driving on.

Great quick spot!

The dispersed camping is super easy to find, and it's right off the highway! It was perfect for a quick spot to camp on our way home to Colorado instead of getting a hotel room.
