Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Martinsdale, MT

Martinsdale Reservoir Montana FWP accommodates pets at its spacious lakeside campsites, offering fire rings, picnic tables, and vault toilets for campers with dogs. Chief Joseph City Park in nearby Harlowton welcomes pets with water hookups, picnic tables, and trash service from April through October. Spring Creek Campground maintains pet-friendly policies with both tent and RV sites available. Cottonwood Reservoir Dispersed Camping provides primitive options for those traveling with pets who prefer more remote settings. When camping with dogs in this region, visitors should be prepared for potentially extreme temperature variations, as summer days can be hot while nights cool significantly. Wildlife encounters are possible throughout the area, so keeping pets leashed protects both local animals and your dog. The campground at Deadmans Basin Reservoir offers another pet-friendly option with lakeside sites that provide excellent star-viewing opportunities at night, though the water level varies seasonally and may be significantly lower during drought years.

    Crystal Lake Campground

    Beautiful

I love this place so much. This was my first time camping in Montana. It was breathtaking for me. The lake was so peaceful and clear. The trail around the lake is a nice walk to see all the different views around it. The meadows were full of wildflowers in the summer. The campground is a small loop and spaced out, the lake trail also had a couple of backcountry spots to set up. There’s also a few more trails in the area that were very pretty!!

Spring Creek Campground & Trout Ranch

Love the Sound of the River

We followed our RV GPS right to the campground (CG), which is a favorite of ours for a two-night stay. Check-in was quick and easy. We proceeded to Deluxe River site 18 with 30 AMP and water. You can angle the rig in as you want to get set up on the wide pad area. The utilities were in the middle of the gravel pad, and we could park where our 9’ patio could come out to enjoy the gorgeous view of the river. They have free WiFi, but it was not very fast, and we used our Starlink. There are mature trees here, but we got a clear shot north for Starlink. We got 3 bars on Verizon. The water pressure was okay. Talking to our next-door neighbors, who have stayed here over the years, this CG is under new management by a couple who also owned a KOA in Billings. There are already changes, such as getting rid of the cabins and putting in some new FHU sites. There may be plans for new cabins in the future. We also noticed that from staying here in September 2019, the ponds are now state-stocked, and you need a Montana fishing license following regular fishing regulations versus no-license pay for the trout you catch. They also have a military and senior discount, but this wasn't mentioned/given when we made our reservations online. We mentioned it to the lady who checked us in, but she didn't offer to refund us the discount like other CG's have done in the past. There is no dog park, but there’s plenty of area to walk your dog. Someday we are going to plan a longer than two-day stay so we can further explore the area and fly fish the river.

    Cottonwood Reservoir Dispersed Camping

Very hard to find at night

This place seemed promising at first. It was hard to find a decent spot at night due to only using headlights of my van. Most of the road is extremely rugged/uneven/full of large holes. The only place I was able to stay for the night was the road leading up to the locked gate. This is about the only nice spot. Other than that this place is • quiet w/occasional traffic along the high way (right next to reservoir) • very few people here, but far enough away from me • no fee required • provides OK view to the mountains • great when you bring along a pet • you will need to be fully prepared for primitive camping

    Kids love it here

I have 5 kids of all ages. They love it here. Fishing ponds and river too. The husband and wife have worked so hard to make this place fun for everyone. Kids got to feed fish in the pond just stop in and ask for the food. They are kind to kids and pets as well. I spent my time doing this full time and people that run campgrounds don't always have the most respect for dogs or kids. Spent 30 days here. Nice little town as well with kind people.

    Martinsdale Reservoir Montana FWP

    Large exposed campground on Reservoir

Martinsdale Reservoir Fishing Access Site campground is a very large campground with out a ton of campsite which means they are well spread apart from each other.  Not all the sites are numbered, some have picnic table (a few of the numbered site did not have tables or fire rings). Some of the sites have metal fire rings, others rock fire rings and others had nothing.  All of the site are along the north shore of the lake (or are when the reservoir has more water in it) .  Numerous vault toilets are to be found.  No water and no trash collection so come prepared.  The problem with this campground is it has no trees so you are at the mercy of the sun and wind.  The wind, it really blow through the area, every time I have visited this site I have found it to windy to attempt to fish.

    Chief Joseph City Park

    A delightful refuge.

A very nice small town town campground east of Montana’s front range. Several level pull-through RV sites with electricity. Dumpster and water hydrant near by in the campground. Large new community playground adjacent to the RV sites. Sparsely used in October/November. 14 day limit. We look forward to staying here again.

    Fairy Lake Campground

Magical Mountain Views and Crystal Clear Water—My Favorite Campground Ever!

Fairy Lake Campground is hands down my favorite campground I’ve ever visited. The views of the surrounding mountains and dense forest are absolutely magical—it truly feels like you’ve stepped into another world. The lake itself is stunning, with crystal clear water that looks almost unreal. It’s the perfect place to relax, hike, fish, or just sit back and take in the beauty of Montana.

Like other reviews mention, the 6-mile unmaintained road to get to the campground is definitely rough. The warnings are justified—it’s bumpy, rocky, and slow going. That said, I made it up just fine in my rear-wheel-drive Ranger, and we even saw some regular cars make it (though I’m sure they scraped a rock or two along the way). The drive might test your patience, but it’s 100% worth it once you arrive.

The campground itself is peaceful, not overly crowded, and surrounded by towering trees and mountain views in every direction. It felt remote and wild in the best way possible. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a true Montana mountain camping experience—just come prepared for the road in!

    Deadmans Basin

Fish jumping, waves lulling, colors awakening - all on a quiet lake

We went for an early morning hike to get some miles in before the summer heat set in. This left fewer hours to drive and the planned campground was not that good at all. Looking on The Dyrt we could one that we could reach around 4. Deadman’s Basin was located conveniently on our journey.

Another guy was signing up for his site when we arrived. After borrowing our pen, he gave us the scoop. “The campground is not clearly understood but it’s Thursday - nobody will stop by to check. Go either direction and find a spot.” We went left and kept driving until we found an unoccupied loop (actually it only has 2 sites on it). We chose the site we could back into. It’s lakeside!

A cottonwood tree is tall enough to provide some shade as the sun sets. The breeze is cooling. A motorboat tows a skier. A couple fishermen walk the lakeshore back to their pickup truck. After setting up we drove through the entire camp. There are day use and fee areas interspersed. A boat ramp and a site next to it. Many sites don’t have shade so choose wisely.

The beauty of this place caught our hearts by the time we left. Sunset drifting down with a strong breeze rhythmically working the waves - what a perfect site! Waking up just in time to be mesmerized by the sunrise over a calm lake - what a perfect lake! We highly recommend site 22 in breezy point loop. It’s the last site but it gave us tremendous moments.

The cost is an odd thing. It’s $18 per night if you don’t have a Montana fishing license. The cost is less if you do. This seems steep given that there is no potable water and only vault toilets. However we’ll pay it to enjoy a break from the road.

Guide to Martinsdale

Martinsdale Reservoir Montana FWP provides spacious camping with sites spread well apart along the north shore. All pets must be on leash throughout the campground, with several vault toilets available for visitor convenience. The campground has a mix of sites, some numbered with picnic tables and fire rings while others have only basic amenities. No drinking water or trash collection services exist, so campers with dogs must bring sufficient water supplies and pack out all pet waste. Spring Creek campground, located at 5,300 feet elevation, offers a more sheltered experience with 10 sites alongside a refreshing creek that dogs can access. Sites cost $7 per night with vault toilets provided but no garbage facilities. The terrain at both locations accommodates tent and RV camping, though sites aren't particularly large for trailers. Windy conditions at Martinsdale Reservoir can make for challenging camping as the area lacks trees for shelter.

The Lewis and Clark National Forest provides several dog-friendly camping options within reasonable driving distance of Martinsdale. Richardson Campground features three sites along a small creek with picnic tables and fire rings, though the tight road configuration makes turning around difficult with trailers. Hay Canyon offers six free campsites spread among large mature trees with metal fire rings at each site. Bear activity occurs in the region, so proper food storage including pet food is essential when camping. Hunters frequently use Spring Creek campground as a base camp, making it popular during hunting seasons. Many campers enjoy hiking the surrounding mountains with their dogs for impressive views, though higher elevation sites require high-clearance vehicles to access. The campgrounds in Castle Mountains provide small creek access where dogs can cool off during summer months.
