Best Dispersed Camping near Greycliff, MT

The Yellowstone River corridor near Greycliff, Montana features numerous fishing access sites that double as primitive camping areas, including Bratten Fishing Access and Otter Creek Fishing Access. These riverside locations provide dispersed camping opportunities with minimal amenities and direct water access. Within an hour's drive, campers can also find Buffalo Jump Camp and Cliff Swallow, both offering tent and small RV camping options. Most sites in the region operate on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations required. The landscape transitions from open prairie near Greycliff to more forested terrain as travelers head south toward the mountains, creating diverse camping environments from riverside flats to higher elevation sites.

Many fishing access campgrounds require high-clearance vehicles to navigate rough access roads, particularly at Cottonwood Reservoir where several campers note "extremely rugged/uneven roads full of large holes." As one visitor to Falls Creek Campground advises, "Warning: Google Maps will take you down a small road with houses. Skip that one. Continue straight on the main road." Train noise affects several riverside camping areas, with one Pig Farm Fishing Access camper reporting, "Train whistles woke us up four times." Cell service varies significantly throughout the region, with stronger signals near town and limited connectivity in more remote locations. Most sites lack drinking water, requiring campers to bring their own supplies or use filtration systems for river water.

Riverside camping locations receive consistently high ratings from visitors who appreciate the natural soundscape. A camper at Otter Creek Fishing Access notes, "You can fall asleep to the sounds of the river rushing by." Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, particularly at Cottonwood Reservoir where one visitor observed "all kinds of waterfowl passing seasonal" and "stars at night amazing." While most sites lack amenities, Bratten Fishing Access offers more developed facilities with "a vaulted bathroom which is spotlessly clean" and "picnic tables extended for easy wheelchair access." Campers frequently mention the solitude available at these sites, with one noting, "When we were camping in middle of June there was only one other camper." Weather conditions can change rapidly, with visitors reporting significant winds at higher elevations.

    Cottonwood Reservoir Dispersed Camping

    Cottonwood reservoir wilsall montana

Cottonwood Reseravoir DNRC land section.  accessible for overnight camping under DNRC rules.  The reservoir has Yellowstone cutthroat trout and white suckers.  No wifi, no trash, no bathrooms. Completely wild. Stars at night amazing. All kinds of waterfowl passing seasonal. No amenities.

    Cottonwood Reservoir Dispersed Camping

Overnight at a lake with mountain view

A few sites, close toe Hyw 89 through a Texas gate. We camped for a night and it's a beautiful space with stunning views and a reservoir right at the spots. No fire rings a little bit a rough road 4x4 and higher clearance recommended. Better no enter with big rigs or trailer. But a beautiful place to spend time.

    Pig Farm Fishing Access Camp

Simple but the views are amazing

Not really any established sites from what we found, but it was a great place to stop for the night and very private.

We stopped on a Thursday and had the area all to ourselves. There are no facilities whatsoever, make sure to pack everything out and stock up on gas and supplies before heading out there!

The view is gorgeous, the river is lovely and the boat "ramp" makes for great water access.

There are train tracks nearby, which wasn't necessarily negative for us since we live next to train tracks at home .

    Pig Farm Fishing Access Camp

    Fantastic spot right near Livingston

Very easy to get to with several camping and RV areas although little shade. Great cell service out here but this is completely self-contained BLM land and since it's a fishing access spot stays are limited to 7 days. There are a couple of areas right next to the river if you go down some steep hills for the more intrepid campers. There's also a great ramp for launching boats or kayaks or fishing from. Yellowstone on one side and beautiful mountains on the other and it's free!

    Cottonwood Reservoir Dispersed Camping

Very hard to find at night

This place seemed promising at first. It was hard to find a decent spot at night due to only using headlights of my van. Most of the road is extremely rugged/uneven/full of large holes. The only place I was able to stay for the night was the road leading up to the locked gate. This is about the only nice spot. Other than that this place is • quiet w/occasional traffic along the high way (right next to reservoir) • very few people here, but far enough away from me • no fee required • provides OK view to the mountains • great when you bring along a pet • you will need to be fully prepared for primitive camping

    Pig Farm Fishing Access Camp

Fishing access site. No developed sites. State of Montana lands .

Rough camp. No amenities. Not large enough for motor home. But ok for pull camper. First come first serve. Looking for that free spot. Between the hotels and hassle.

    Pig Farm Fishing Access Camp

    Fantastic location for dispersed camping

Just a couple of miles from town, and only about half a mile on gravel road which can be handled by any sedan, one side is the Yellowstone River and the other side are the mountains. I feel very safe because there is another group camping here in an RV, because someone had mentioned some guys in trucks scaring them off. I'm protected so I'm not worried. You have to cross the railroad tracks and there is a train that comes by occasionally about 100 yards away. So far it's blown it's whistle once. I almost hate to share this spot because I plan on coming back! Great T-Mobile cell phone service and absolutely stunning location.

    Pig Farm Fishing Access Camp

Nice place to park, can fish if you like

I found it easy enough to find a level spot where I could leave my little camper connected to the TV. Plenty of space. It is close to the train track and you can see the trucks in the freeway.

Editing to add: the road is a bit rough, not well maintained but I’m sure you could drive a big rig in here just take it slow.

I’m here in a Tuesday evening towards the end of August and it’s essentially bug free. The only noise I hear is vehicles on the freeway. I think there are two other vehicles staying overnight.

The actual location of the boat landing is (45.7088104, -110.3492486)

Guide to Greycliff

Dispersed camping opportunities near Greycliff, Montana cluster primarily along the Yellowstone River and extend into surrounding public lands. The region sits at approximately 3,900 feet elevation with summer temperatures typically ranging 75-85°F during day and cooling to 45-55°F at night. Most dispersed sites lack designated boundaries, requiring campers to identify suitable level areas away from waterways.

What to do

Kayaking the Yellowstone River: Launch directly from Pig Farm Fishing Access Camp which offers "a great ramp for launching boats or kayaks or fishing from" with "the Yellowstone River on one side and beautiful mountains on the other."

Wildlife viewing at higher elevations: Visit Cottonwood Reservoir Dispersed Camping for seasonal bird watching opportunities. One camper notes the area has "all kinds of waterfowl passing seasonal" and provides excellent stargazing as "stars at night amazing."

Hiking to Natural Bridge: Access hiking trails from Falls Creek Campground where "Natural Bridge site is on the way here with hiking." The campground provides access to multiple forest trails ranging from easy to moderate difficulty.

What campers like

Privacy between sites: At Falls Creek, campers appreciate that "each site is in the middle of trees and moss and directly next to the Boulder River" and "there is enough space between sites giving you privacy."

Waterside camping: Otter Creek Fishing Access lets you camp "25 ft from the Yellowstone River" with "several areas for campers and travel trailers and even big rigs." Campers note there are "many open places to camp alongside the river."

Budget-friendly options: Free camping near Greycliff, Montana is available at several locations. Pig Farm Fishing Access offers no-cost camping where you'll find "plenty of space" and can be "very private" with one camper noting "we stopped on a Thursday and had the area all to ourselves."

What you should know

Train noise levels: Railroad tracks run parallel to many riverside camping areas. At Pig Farm Fishing Access, campers report "train whistles woke us up four times" and trains come "every half hour" which impacts sleep quality for light sleepers.

Road conditions to remote sites: Many dispersed camping areas require careful driving. Cliff Swallow is "about 7 miles west of Absarokee, 2.5 of them gravel" while Cottonwood Reservoir has "extremely rugged/uneven roads full of large holes" requiring high clearance vehicles.

Limited stay duration: Most fishing access campsites have shorter stay limits than typical public lands. Otter Creek notes "rather than normal BLM 14 days it's a 7-Day Max" which affects longer-term visitors planning extended stays.

Tips for camping with families

Find established fire rings: While many dispersed sites near Greycliff lack formal fire pits, Pig Farm Fishing Access campers note there are "some existent fire pits that people made" though you should always check current fire restrictions.

Consider vault toilet locations: Bratten Fishing Access offers "a vaulted bathroom which is spotlessly clean" and wheelchair-accessible facilities with "picnic tables extended for easy wheelchair access."

Plan for river safety: When camping with children near the Yellowstone River, be aware of strong currents. At Otter Creek, campers can enjoy river access but note the "Yellowstone River corridor provides direct water access" requiring careful supervision of younger children.

Tips from RVers

Size limitations: Most dispersed sites can't accommodate larger RVs. At Falls Creek, campers note "there is not enough space for larger rigs" though "there is enough space in the parking spaces to car camp."

Limited hookups: No water or electrical hookups exist at dispersed sites. Bring adequate water supplies as most locations lack potable water. At Pig Farm Fishing Access, campers advise "there are no facilities whatsoever, make sure to pack everything out and stock up on gas and supplies before heading out there."

Level parking spots: Finding level ground can be challenging. Bratten Fishing Access offers "about six formal sites with a level gravel spot" where "each site can accommodate two vehicles above 33 ft long" making it more suitable for smaller trailers and camper vans.
