Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Libby, MT

Blackwell Flats is one of 4 free, first come campgrounds in the Libby Dam coriander. It is manged by the US Army Corp of Engineers. The campground has 7 sites and is located on the West side of the Kootenai River approx 3.5 miles downstream from Libby Dam. Access from Forest Road 228.  There is a boat ramp with day-use parking onsite. There is little to no shade and there is road noise, but for free, it is terrific. For an amazing tour, drive Forest Rd 228 North, maybe 30 miles, until you come to bridge that closes the upper end of the Reservoir. Cross over and follow that road South until it meets back up with 228. A beautiful scenic drive.

Cute little RV park off the highway. Very quite with a small lake. Families can enjoy fishing, swimming, yard games, fire pit, and very dog friendly with a fenced dog park. We are tent campers and had a nice spot on lake. only a few tent sites. Super clean bathrooms with hot shower.

Great campsite!! Overlooking the water with boating docks, Camper sites, water and restrooms. Metal Fire pits for cooking, awnings for picnics, grassy areas for play, pets allowed, reception areas as well. Good times with friends!!

My wife and I stayed here while motorcycle camping with our cat in July 2019.  Loved the days we stayed.  Our campsite was situated so we had good solar reception.  Fire ring was good, as was the picnic table.  Discovered a spring just a few miles west of the campground where water was easily available.  The poor road condition was the only bad part.

This campground is in an older couple’s front yard. It’s got a pretty running creek called Trestle Creek running through there yard off of the mountain side. Which they have their property on. They also live on said property, so they are always watching... Beware! Lol Sooo.. They kicked us out because the guy’s wife saw our kitty was on top of another guest’s car... Soo bad! oh! and the other reason: my cat was catching mice and killing them, and we would pick them up as soon as we would see them. Umm.. isn’t that what cats do..? Idk... and they would always complain we were awake all nite when we stayed up til one or two am. We (mom and I) were staying here for 3 months. And were perfectly quiet. They just thought it was odd or something for some reason... I don’t get it. We paid to be there, long term, we’re not keeping anyone up.. what’s the big deal? So ya, and the spots are super duper close next to each other. Like within two feet... yeah.. no privacy. I felt weird sitting outside in my spot with a friend in chairs even. And they frown upon having any visitors come see you. So it’s more of a rich, quiet, pretentious, older people’s camping place.

Tucked into the dense Kootenai Forest is a true gem off the beaten path. This was one of our favorite N F S campgrounds in Montana. The host was great. The campground well maintained. The sites were well spaced. I think 32 ft is the max. There is potable water avail. No cell. So just string up your hammock and enjoy all the sounds of nature. There is a boat launch area on the Koonusa River/lake/Reservoir. Check out Libby Dam and the Kootenai Falls and swinging bridge. It's worth the extra drive. Also, for a beautiful scenic drive, continue north on 228 until you get to the bridge that crosses over the north end, take it across and head back south until it meets back up with 228. Even though it was smokey when we did it, it was still beautiful.

There was good and not as good. It has generous sites, clean restrooms and laundry. Having shade in the midst of record breaking heatwave is nice. Fun note: There is a self serve car was just outside the entrance that has a bay for RVs. We don't see that often. The not as good is the train and some road noise, but in this area, most CG do. Libby is a cute little town with a lot of interesting history. Kootenai Falls and Ross Creek Cedars are definitely a must .

This a really nice campground. It's is small and intimate with a mix of some seasonal and tourist sites. They are average in size. Sites are, level. Full hookups. Bathrooms are good. The negatives are that it is close to Hwy 2, so road noise came be aggravating for some. There are no other amenities like pool, playground, store, etc. The town itself is great. Walkable. Very nice brewery. Riverfront park is nice. Libby dam area is worth a drive up. Make sure to visit Kootenai Falls. Amazing!! If you have the time, I would see highly recommend Ross Cedars. The giant cedars are really neat.

I been through the area a couple times on quick trips,I always wanted to return and explore the area without knowing much about it and the people were very helpful. Yes they told us how to get to Ross Creek Cedars and Kootenai falls (go early), absolutely stunning! I also found Libby Dam, we sat on the tailgate eating lunch and watched eagles soaring and fishing on the bottom side of the dam. The trail down to the river was great, the boys had a blast riding their bikes on it. The only downside was being right next to the highway but that also made it nice for getting out and exploring too.

We camped here and enjoyed being away from everywhere else. There were free range cattle everywhere ... which means a lot of cow pies that the dogs couldn't stay out of. That wasn't really terrible though. The lake itself was rather gross. Probably the dirtiest lake I've ever been to in Montana. It was disappointing because we were camping on a very hot weekend. We wanted to get in the water to cool off, but it was gross so we couldn't bring ourselves to get in.

We have stayed at many COE parks, but never have we run across one that is free. It is all disbursed camping. The sites are spaced far apart. They circle a large open field PERFECT for star gazing. We watched The Perseid Meteor shower. Spectacular! We were fortunate to snag a spot next to the river. During the day it was hot, but cooled off nicely when the sun dropped behind the mountains. Libby is not too far away. A cute little town with much to offer. We enjoyed Riverfest. A great grocery with lots of good ready made foods at the deli. We drove the entire scenic hwy/rd around the lake....up east side to Eureka/Canadian border and back down the west side. It is a full day, but worth it. The views are amazing if there is no smoke from the summer wildfires. No AT&T service. There is a free dump station in town.

This place was filled to the brim with permanents. I didnt even feel like I was camping I felt like I was invading someones home.

There was trash in out fire pit and that was gross.

The camp hosts were real nice. The first spot we got we didnt fit in so they accommodated and found us something that would work for our rig. They have a nice convenience store, easy boat access and a restaurant with full bar.

There were kids everywhere! at the bar, on atvs, riding bikes, jumping around us while we were fishing for no reason.

So many people had their dogs off leash with poor manners and no recall. I had 2 dogs approach me aggressively. I saw a dog go after someone walking their lil Pomeranian, the owner looked terrified. We did not feel comfortable walking our dogs cause of all the aggressive off leash dogs.

Full hookups worked as they should no complaints there.

Would not stay here again.

This is a typical state park that was designed many years ago and is now obsolete for modern RV's. Be very careful in choosing your site, the majority are not level and some are very steep, both up and down. Some spots are such that they don't align with the one-way street. That's fine if you have a Class B or C, but not a trailer. Hosts seem to be a little selective in who they enforce the dog leash rules on. A camper close to us never had their dog on a leash, and they were two sites away from the host. There's no hookups at all, although there are water spigots around the loops. Many dead and dying trees contributed to the huge amount of stink bugs.

Maybe 20 minutes from whitefish, this area offers only a handful of rustic sites as well boat launch parking. First come first serve. Lovely trails nearby with lake access. My dogs and I enjoyed our stay. Highly suggested.

We were able to move to a lake view site. Our site was private and peaceful. Campground had bathroom, showers, boat docks and a boat launch. We didn’t use most of the amenities, but we enjoyed our stay immensely. Plenty of space, a nice trail to the middle Thompson. Great for dogs too.

Pros: nicely forested providing shade to many sites, inexpensive, tons of space to walk dogs, water and electric at sites, dump and water station easy to navigate. Conveniently located with a short drive into Sandpoint and all there is to do there. Cons: sites are small

You can choose ambiance in the first loop or river front in the second loop. Just be aware that the river is noisy. It’s pack it in and pack it out so, no garbage collection. Cell reception for T Mobile is a strong 1-2 bars. No trouble streaming. One of the best forest service campgrounds. $15 a night. $7.50 with senior discount. The only major problem is that dogs are not on leashes and no one is around to enforce the leash law.

It is a private secluded location but over priced for tent camping. It made for a nice base camp. The dogs were allowed to be off leash which was real nice. They do not allow pit bulls or Rottweilers but ironic that the camp hosts have a Rottweiler. It was not crowded. The nice hike to the summit to view both lakes was worth going up. Other than the $30/night for tent camping it was okay. Had it been $15 a night I would have given the site a 5 star.

2020 cost is $16 + $8 extra car, half off with Federal parks pass, & it's average for a Forest Service pay campground. There's water, & you can fill a holding tank, but no power or dump. The lower loops are very close together & less shade. The upper loop has more shade, bigger sites, but sound rises from below. You can hear the conversations and generators of your lower neighbors. Our site was next to a vault toilet - we could smell it. There was lots of noise, e.g., road, train, barking dogs, etc. The 2020 camp hosts were very intrusive. They stopped us in the middle of the road while they inspected our front license plate (we aren't required to have one), then interrogated us, without masks, about where we were from, what we were doing & how many dogs we had. We have a nice RV and look like average middle class folks. Maybe it was because we were in a Class B Van, but our van cost more than most class As. This is a self-pay campground so unless I need firewood I don't need to be forced to stop & be questioned by a volunteer. While we drove through looking at sites one host tailed us on foot through the CG. Five minutes after we began to set up they showed up, not wearing masks, wanting money. I didn't think volunteers were supposed to handle any money. We'd already paid at the iron ranger pay station & they seemed disappointed to not get the money directly from us. Then, within a minute, they returned, not wearing masks, & fussed because we hadn't gotten the tag on our campsite post yet - we were still setting up & hadn't had time yet. They weren't social distancing & we thought they were very peculiar and intimidating.
