      Livingston/Paradise Valley KOA Holiday

      Great location for the parks.

Great little KOA. Awesome views of the Absaroka range. Book early. Tent sites were great. Nice dog park, small though.

      Bear Canyon Campground

      Steep steep

Not the best experience. The entrance is quite tricky and very steep. We missed the entrance and had to find a place to unhook and turn around. (We’re in a 36’ RV pulling a Jeep) The hookup spaces are so close together you can touch your neighbor, so we missed the beautiful views the partial hook up guys were able to enjoy. It’s a little run down and quite pricy. The dog “park” isn’t fenced, so if your hoping to let your dogs stretch there legs, this isn’t the place for you. We will find another stop next time we come through.

Good place to stay, nice hot springs

Nice dog park across the street, sites are a little tight but its perfect for a couple night stay. Awesome that its only 35 miles to Big Sky and its a gorgeous drive. Our sire only had electric/water but i know there are some with full hookups. Picnic tables and fire rings and sites are gravel.

      Three Forks KOA Journey

      Nice small KOA

This is a small KOA. Super friendly staff. Sites are shady unless you have a big rig - that area does not have shade. Decent dog park. Decent playground. I did not use the bath house so can’t comment on that. No pool, but did have a nice patio area with tables and chairs behind the store. I just stayed one night as we are on the road home. I do have one complaint and that is the sprinklers that came on overnight - it soaked the chairs and picnic table by our camper. I think the friendliness of the staff and the shady sites are the main reason for 5 stars.

      Cottonwood Reservoir Dispersed Camping

Very hard to find at night

This place seemed promising at first. It was hard to find a decent spot at night due to only using headlights of my van. Most of the road is extremely rugged/uneven/full of large holes. The only place I was able to stay for the night was the road leading up to the locked gate. This is about the only nice spot. Other than that this place is • quiet w/occasional traffic along the high way (right next to reservoir) • very few people here, but far enough away from me • no fee required • provides OK view to the mountains • great when you bring along a pet • you will need to be fully prepared for primitive camping

      Yellowstone Edge RV Park

      Worth it for the view

Right on the edge of the Yellowstone River, about 90 minutes north of Yellowstone NP. This is an RV Park, so no tents are allowed. The view of the river and the mountains is fantastic. And, it’s close to dining in Livingston if you want that. Laundry facilities and a larger than average store. Pet friendly. The sites are small. But, I would definitely go back.

      Red Mountain (MT)

      Fantastic hosts and beautiful scenery!

Our favorite campground to date! The hosts are wonderful, helpful, and kind people. The area is just beautiful, with the river only a few steps away, and there is plenty of room for people and pets to run and play. Lots of fun hiking trails nearby. Two big loops for campers (one first-come first-serve, one for reservations); the hosts were happy to point out the best spots to accommodate our 36-ft fifth-wheel. Clean restrooms with water spigots at each. We all love everything about this place!

    Guide to Gallatin Gateway

Dispersed camping near Gallatin Gateway, Montana provides access to varied terrain in the Gallatin National Forest. The area sits at elevations between 5,000-7,000 feet, with temperatures often dropping below 40°F at night even in summer months. Several Forest Service roads offer designated dispersed camping areas where visitors can stay up to 16 days in a 30-day period.

    What to do

Creek fishing: Hyalite Canyon offers clear streams for fishing, with easy access from multiple points. Hyalite Canyon Dispersed campsites provide direct creek access. One visitor noted, "Great fishing access! Stayed 8 nights, and only large issues we had were solar not having enough exposure and same sort of issue for our Starlink."

Mountain biking: Explore forest roads and designated trails. Multiple sites feature connections to trail systems. A camper at Spire Rock Campground shared: "There's several trailheads on that road (I'd recommend Garnet Mtn; great views at the top!), so that was great. The road is in great shape and you won't need AWD."

Reservoir activities: Swimming and boating at Hyalite Reservoir. During summer months, the reservoir offers paddling opportunities. "There are outdoor pools, surrounded by hardscape, and indoor pools," reports a visitor to Bozeman Hot Springs, though they note it's "busy facilities" rather than a natural experience.

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: Spacious campsites with natural buffers. Swan Creek Campground receives consistent praise for site separation: "Smaller campground with nice campsites next to the creek that runs through it. Plenty of room between campsites. Campground is a few miles off the main road so you don't hear traffic at all through the night."

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Dawn and dusk offer best chances. Campers report seeing deer and smaller mammals. A reviewer shared: "We were in a back in site that had a huge yard area and super convenient walking path to the hot springs just feet away," noting the natural setting at Bozeman Hot Springs Campground & RV Park.

Clean facilities: Several campgrounds maintain good sanitation. One camper at Swan Creek commented, "Clean pump water at the campground to use," while another stated, "This property has been freshly updated with natural rocks, landscaping and upscale amenities. Bathrooms and showers are centrally located, warm, secure and clean."

    What you should know

Train noise: Several campgrounds experience frequent train disruptions. Bozeman Trail Campground receives consistent mentions of this issue: "There was no parking for the laundry/bath house & I forgot my code so I couldn't get in to check it out. Right beside I90 & the railroad so noisy all night." Another camper noted trains "can be heard at all hours of the day and night."

Limited cell service: Coverage varies significantly by location. In more remote areas, connectivity disappears. A Spire Rock camper reported, "I didn't get any signal in the area (or along US191). I had to drive to Big Sky or Bozeman for some signal."

Seasonal restrictions: Many roads close in winter. Campgrounds at higher elevations often operate May through September only. One visitor to Hyalite Canyon noted, "The gate was closed when we went. We were also in an RV that doesn't do great with snow so we were going out to turn around anyway."

    Tips for camping with families

Water safety: Supervise children at creek areas. While attractive for play, mountain streams run cold and can have strong currents. A visitor to Hood Creek Campground mentioned, "Always a fun area for kids to play in the water!" but cautioned about steep access points: "it is a bit of a steep walk down some steps from the parking spot to the picnic area. And again from the picnic area down to the water."

Group site options: Reserve areas designed for multiple families. Hood Creek offers designated group spaces: "The group camp site sits off to the side of most of the individual sites and it's right on the reservoir. We camped with nine other families and a plethora of kids between us."

Beginner-friendly hikes: Several short trails suitable for children. A family noted, "There are several short stroller or handicap accessible hikes," though they recommend reserving "like 6 months ahead" for prime summer weekends.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Many forest campgrounds have uneven terrain. Come prepared with leveling blocks. A reviewer from Hyalite Canyon mentioned: "We came here looking for a dispersed site to camp in a rooftop tent. There was only about 3 spots all super unlevel, and seem somewhat sketchy."

Access road conditions: Some roads require careful navigation. Forest service roads can deteriorate seasonally. A camper shared: "The dirt road was so pockmarked we had to turn... The area is stunning, but we could not get to the campground. Our campervan felt like it was going to tip over because of the ruts."

Reservation importance: Many sites fill quickly in summer. One visitor to Swan Creek Campground explained: "This is one of the nicest campgrounds around Big Sky I was told, but they fill up fast! I drove through hoping I could get just one night when I really needed it and I lucked out."
