Chief Looking Glass Campground, located in Florence, Montana, provides riverside camping sites for visitors with pets. The spacious camp spots can accommodate multiple tents while maintaining room for dogs to relax. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring with easy access to the Bitterroot River. Campsites cost $18 per night for out-of-state visitors, with reduced rates for Montana residents or those with fishing licenses. Some campers have noticed the mosquitoes can be particularly aggressive during summer months, making this location better for pets and owners in spring or fall. Gates to the campground close between 10 PM and 8 AM, so plan accordingly if traveling with pets that need overnight walks.

Dogs must be kept on leashes no longer than 6 feet at nearby Yellowrock Campground, with specific designated areas for pets to relieve themselves. The facility enforces fees for pet waste violations to maintain cleanliness throughout the grounds. Several hiking trails in the surrounding area welcome leashed dogs, including paths to Peterson Lake and Bass Lake for dispersed camping options. Both lakes are accessible via walk-in or hike-in routes and offer free camping in a natural setting. The tree-covered camping areas provide good shade for pets during hot weather, though the water pump at Chief Looking Glass was reportedly non-operational during some visits, so carrying extra water for pets is advisable. Most campgrounds in the area maintain clean vault toilets and well-maintained grounds, making them suitable for extended stays with pets.

      Charles Waters Campground

      Great Spot!

Great for tent camping, there are several spots with trails leading to Bass Creek. Recreational area, picnic tables, fire pits, bathrooms, and about 10 minutes from Florence MT.

      Chief Looking Glass Campground

      Peaceful and quiet

One of my favorite spots to camp relax during the spring-fall. I spend a lot of time here when home from fires to get peace and quiet and not have to deal with in town people when I am home during the summer. Good fishing, can float the river from Florence bridge to camp, mostly private spots, most spots are on the tributary run off of the bitterroot river, lots of wildlife from small to larger animals, there is garbage disposal and restrooms which are well taken care of most times.

      Gird Point

      Gorgeous!!

Gird Point Campground which is located in the Bitterroot National Forest is gorgeous. I love camping in Montana- I honestly have never had a bad experience camping anywhere in Montana. Gird Point is definitely no exception. My favorite part about this campsite is that it is located at the top of a peak. Camping on this peak definitely has gorgeous views, no doubt. There are three different mountain ranges that you are able to look out and see. Honestly, this is the best thing to wake up to. Talk about picturesque. You are able to stay in the lookout which has two beds that you are able to put your sleeping bags/pads on, and the lookout sleeps 4 people. When I went, we did have 4 people and it fit us pretty well. There is also a wood stove that works great for heating up water and cooking. The lookout also comes with some utensils and other amenities. Obviously, you do need to bring your own bathing supplies, sleeping supplies, food and drinks. You are able to drive to a certain point and then you do have to hike the remainder of the length to the lookout. The hike isn't too bad.

      Jim & Mary's RV Park

      Beautiful campground

This is one if the prettiest and cleanest campground we have ever stayed at. The sites are gravel, mostly level and most sites have shad. The pull through sites on the outer edge do not but others inside do. The laundry and bathhouse was very nice and clean. $2.00 per load to wash. There is flowers everywhere and they have a sprinkler system to keep everything pretty so you can’t leave anything out overnight that you don’t want to get wet. They mow each Thursday and are constantly doing upkeep on the grounds. FHU was a plus and made our stay enjoyable. There is a small dog park but it’s mostly in the sun so we chose to enjoy walks. The only downside (if I had to find one) was the train close by that was very squeaky as it went by. But I never heard it during the night.

      River Edge Resort

RV Park and Casino-don’t shy away

I was a bit apprehensive when the sign read, “RV park, casino” (restaurant, motel).....but! This place is nice. Sites are close, so prepare to be friendly. Highway is close by as well, so you will hear some traffic noise. A train occasionally runs slowly across the river. Campground nicley maintained. But, the lawnmower is out there everyday!!! Loud and unneeded. Shower and Laundry available. Nice quiet road to walk pets. And beautiful view of river and mountainside.

      Colgate Camp

      Hidden gem

Great location just off the highway. Stayed here for one night on our way to Missoula. River located just down a cliff along the campsite. When we were here is was roaring and you would probably want to be careful with kids and pets. Very quite with little to no traffic in the campground as well as the highway during our stay. Some spots were a little muddy due to rain for the past couple days. Didn't use the restrooms while we were here so unsure how clean those were but a couple people stopped by on the drive to use them. Would definitly stay here again.

    Guide to Florence

Dispersed camping options extend beyond the main campgrounds near Florence, Montana, located in the Bitterroot Valley at an elevation of approximately 3,200 feet. The area experiences hot summer days with cooler evenings and cold winters, with most camping occurring between April and October. Seasonal water availability varies significantly between spring runoff and late summer dry periods.

    What to Do

Explore Rock Creek access: Chief Looking Glass Campground provides direct river access for paddling and fishing. "All the forest service campgrounds in the area were full and we happened across this place. There is a beautiful flat water river with two access points and locals tube and paddle here," notes Dave S., who appreciated the riverside location.

Mini golf at family parks: Granite Peak RV Resort offers recreational amenities for campers. "They had a mini golf course that I wanted to play at, but had no time. Loved the Jellystone themed park," explains Brandon H., though he cautions about water pressure in the facilities.

Hike to mountain lakes: For more adventurous campers, Bass Lake Dispersed Camping provides backcountry access. "Around 7 miles one way to the lake, only gain 3000ft over the course of the hike with around 1000ft of elevation gain in last mile. Scenic mountain meadows lots of vegetations, creek nearby for a good portion of the hike," reports K B., highlighting the moderate difficulty level.

    What Campers Like

Riverside camping spaces: The area offers several river-adjacent camping options. "I chose a site at the very end of the road which is by far the most private and spacious spot. All of the camp spots are close to the river and have easy access to bathrooms and trails," says Rene S. about the layout at Chief Looking Glass.

Forested campsites: Lolo Creek Campground provides tree cover that many campers appreciate. "This is a gorgeous area with tons of shade and sites right on the water. Sites are shaded and well spread apart, there is a clear path to the bathroom from almost every site, and the road is paved," explains Juliana H.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: The natural setting provides chances to observe native species. "Amazing river access from this spot. Bears, deer, beavers, frogs in the bogs along the river, butterflies, bats, fish, bunnies, grouse, chipmunks, eagles, black squirrels, snakes," observes Cheese H. about the diverse wildlife around Lolo Creek Campground.

    What You Should Know

Gate closure times: Several campgrounds in the area restrict overnight access. "The gate to the campsite is closed from 10 PM to 8 AM so if you need to leave early, you cannot do so," warns Riley about Chief Looking Glass Campground, an important consideration for those planning early departures.

Seasonal water conditions: Water availability varies throughout camping season. "The river/creek is pretty flat and low in mid July, but I guess there are fish as there were plenty of fishermen here. There is a boat launch for non motorized boats (kayaks, tubes, SUP), but the water seemed too low to me," reports Annie C. about conditions at Chief Looking Glass.

Insect prevalence: Beavertail Hill State Park Campground and other locations have environmental factors to consider. "The train mentioned in another review is a pretty big deal breaker though honestly. The tracks are right next to the wall in spaces. And during my visit on a weekday it was about every 2 hours," notes David H. about noise disturbances at certain sites.

    Tips for Camping with Families

Kid-friendly amenities: Missoula KOA Holiday offers numerous facilities for children. "Playground, pool, mini golf, clean showers, restrooms and laundry! It was great!" says Desiree D. about the family-oriented features.

Pet exercise areas: Most campgrounds accommodate pets with specific guidelines. "We stayed in campground in 46 of the 50 states. We paid for a deluxe extra wide site. We have a 27ft Class C with a drivers side slide," explains Jennifer H. about camping with pets, though noting space constraints at some locations.

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature play equipment for younger visitors. "We pulled in and the kids where so excited! We set up camp, kids went to the playground & then we went down to the restaurant for dinner! Everything was wonderful!" shares eugenia W. about their experience at Ekstrom's Stage Station Campground.

    Tips from RVers

Site size considerations: RV campers should check site dimensions before booking. "We are full-timers in a 36 ft Class A with a Cherokee Trailhawk tow and stayed in site 17 (away from the river) for 1 day in early August. Most of the sites are fairly large and well spaced," reports Ray & Terri F. about Chief Looking Glass Campground.

Utility hookup locations: Yellowrock Campground provides full hookups but has specific requirements. "Need about 20 foot of sewer hose to reach the sewer drain," mentions Kristi B. about hookup positioning at some sites.

Off-season availability: Some facilities offer extended season camping. "We called the number on their sign when we arrived. It's pretty shut down with no services but we dry camped. Owner was super nice," explains Linda O. about off-season accommodations at Ekstrom's Stage Station Campground.
