Castle Rock's spacious campsites along the Stillwater River accommodate tent and RV camping with pets. The fishing access site features fire rings, picnic tables, and a vault toilet for basic pet camping needs. Most sites maintain distance through natural vegetation, creating privacy for campers with animals. Pet owners can fish the river while their dogs explore the rocky shoreline. Campers report good separation between sites with trees and bushes providing natural boundaries between camping areas. Dogs must remain leashed throughout the campground to protect wildlife and other campers.

Nearby Whitebird Fishing Access Site and Rosebud Isle also welcome pets with similar amenities. The sites charge $12 per night for Montana fishing license holders or $18 without a license. The shallow areas of the Stillwater River provide opportunities for dogs to cool off during summer months. No designated dog areas exist, but the natural surroundings offer ample space for leashed walks. Campers should pack sufficient water for pets as drinking water is unavailable at these primitive sites. Watch for snakes along the rocky riverbanks, especially during warmer months. The sites fill quickly on summer weekends and holidays, so arriving early is recommended for securing a pet-friendly spot.

      Big Timber-Greycliff KOA

      Small KOA

Typical KOA with those amenities. Sites are close together as usual at a KOA. Pads are gravel and super narrow. Lots of kids having a blast at the pool, riding their bikes and playing in the creek that borders the campground. Dog park is adequate though small. Staff is nice and responsive. We did not have a picnic table at our site and they quickly brought one when I asked. They said people were stealing them as well as the fire rings. A bit odd that someone would steal a wooden and metal frame picnic table? We gave our fire ring to the family next to us as we weren’t going to use it and the office told them they didn’t have any extra.

Giving 3 stars due to the proximity of the highway (you can definitely hear the traffic) and train tracks (no train overnight though) as well as the odd picnic table issue and the narrowness of the pads. But if you have children they will most likely love this place.

Spring Creek Campground & Trout Ranch

Love the Sound of the River

We followed our RV GPS right to the campground (CG), which is a favorite of ours for a two-night stay. Check-in was quick and easy. We proceeded to Deluxe River site 18 with 30 AMP and water. You can angle the rig in as you want to get set up on the wide pad area. The utilities were in the middle of the gravel pad, and we could park where our 9’ patio could come out to enjoy the gorgeous view of the river. They have free WiFi, but it was not very fast, and we used our Starlink. There are mature trees here, but we got a clear shot north for Starlink. We got 3 bars on Verizon. The water pressure was okay. Talking to our next-door neighbors, who have stayed here over the years, this CG is under new management by a couple who also owned a KOA in Billings. There are already changes, such as getting rid of the cabins and putting in some new FHU sites. There may be plans for new cabins in the future. We also noticed that from staying here in September 2019, the ponds are now state-stocked, and you need a Montana fishing license following regular fishing regulations versus no-license pay for the trout you catch. They also have a military and senior discount, but this wasn't mentioned/given when we made our reservations online. We mentioned it to the lady who checked us in, but she didn't offer to refund us the discount like other CG's have done in the past. There is no dog park, but there’s plenty of area to walk your dog. Someday we are going to plan a longer than two-day stay so we can further explore the area and fly fish the river.

      Billings Village RV Park

      Super

Very helpful office staff, help backing in (the dreaded electrical meters☹️), very clean. No picnic tables ; pets allowed, but I did not find a pet area? Very clean place; only stayed one night, but would go back.

      Itch-Kep-Pe Park

      Hidden gem in Columbus Wyoming

Clean quiet at night. Family and pet friendly. Large campsites each with a picnic table and fire pit. Public toilets non-threaded water spigot near the entrance. Water quality is great. 64 outlets on four different light posts near communal bathroom and shelter area. With a long enough extension cord you might be able to get to your campsite but I doubt it. Close to the river. I feel safe here. I got here on August 30th and stay till September 3rd that's why I chose month of September.

Spring Creek Campground & Trout Ranch

      Kids love it here

I have 5 kids of all ages. They love it here. Fishing ponds and river too. The husband and wife have worked so hard to make this place fun for everyone. Kids got to feed fish in the pond just stop in and ask for the food. They are kind to kids and pets as well. I spent my time doing this full time and people that run campgrounds don't always have the most respect for dogs or kids. Spent 30 days here. Nice little town as well with kind people.

      Old West RV Park

A Great Overnight Stop with Heartfelt Hospitality

This review is from an overnight or short stay perspective. While planning our Alaska adventure, we came across some glowing reviews of this campground (CG) and were happy to say it lived up to the hype. Its incredibly easy to find just off I-90. If you're heading west, you’ll take a right off I-90 and be there in seconds. Coming from the east, its a left turn, but keep in mind theres a 13' 9" overpass. That's fine for most rigs, but with our Brinkley G3500 and it's high-profile A/C units, it would've been a tight squeeze. Thankfully, we were coming from the west, so no issue. We had booked Site 4 online, and since this isn't a huge CG, it was easy to spot our long gravel pull-through with full hookups. The utility connections were thoughtfully centered on the pad, making setup a breeze. As we were getting settled, we were greeted by Jerad. He welcomed us warmly and mentioned the$10 one-time pet fee, which we hadn't noticed when we booked(it was a while ago). That fee includes a handy little poop bag holder with a built-in flashlight a fun and useful touch for dog owners. Water pressure was a solid 50 psi. We had 4 bars each on both Verizon and T-Mobile, and the CG Wi-Fi clocked in at 26.5 Mbps down and 11.9 Mbps up, pretty solid for a small CG. The sites are nicely spaced for a private park, with lush grass between pads and newer picnic tables. While there isn't a designated dog area, there's some green space to walk your pup, and the town itself is charming and very walkable. We had a great chat with Jerad and Ivy, the CG's new owners as of November 2024. They were both welcoming and genuinely interested in feedback, something you don't always see. They're already working on bathhouse and laundry upgrades, and it’s clear they’re passionate about making this a top-notch stop for travelers. Yes, you'll hear some highway and occasional train noise, but it didn't bother us. For an overnight stop, this place hit all the marks to include walking distance to the Waterhole Saloon with good drinks& food—you get a 10% discount on food and drinks when you mention you're staying at the campground. And with fishing access just up the road and more local exploring to do, we'd definitely consider a longer stay next time.

      Basin Campground

      Gorgeous!!

Montana is one of my favorite places to visit. The amount of outdoor activities is incredible. We try to visit Montana once a year, and it’s obky because we love being surrounded by the mountains and hiking. Basin Montana Campground doesn’t disappoint. Here are some things I like:

      1. Big spacious spaces

      2. Close to hiking- beautiful hikes nearby that are hard to beat! Views are gorgeous!

      3. Lots of campground spaces- with picnic tables and fire rings. Bring your own wood!

      4. Close to some great restaurants.

If going in the summer time I would recommend reserving your spot ahead of time. This is important! They save your spot with a tag so no one else can take it. If you walk up you probably won’t grt a spot. Can’t wait to come back!

      Horsethief Station Fishing Access

dispersed camping in quiet residentially zoned area

Came here for a day, first time in Montana so I had to get the conservation license to camp here but apparently that's a must in all public land of Montana so I got it. $10 for the year. Perfect place to bring solar since there's no shade, and perfect place for my dogs, because they enjoy the creek parallel to all the camp spots. Great quiet spot .

    Guide to Fishtail

Castle Rock offers multiple pet-friendly fishing access sites along the Stillwater River, with several dog-friendly campgrounds near Fishtail within easy driving distance. At 4,100 feet elevation, the Fishtail area provides cooler summer temperatures than nearby lowlands, typically 5-10°F lower during July and August. Winter camping requires preparation for temperatures that can drop below 0°F from November through March.

    What to do

River access for fishing and water activities: Castle Rock sits directly on the Stillwater River with elevated cement lookout areas for setting up fishing chairs. According to Kathi F., "There's a really cool, elevated cement lookout area next to the river to set up your chairs and fish. Across the river is a rock ledge swimmers use to dive off of into a deep pool."

Rock hounding and nature exploration: Castle Rock provides opportunities for rock collectors. "Quiet, nice fishing access, nice spot for rock hounding too," writes Jacee R., who visited during Labor Day weekend when the campground was full.

Wildlife observation: The Fishtail area offers wildlife viewing opportunities, especially in early mornings. At Itch-Kep-Pe Park, campers report waking to "beautiful bird sounds" according to David M., who stayed at site #39.

    What campers like

Spaciousness between sites: Many campgrounds in the Fishtail area provide good separation between sites. TravelingTaylors T. notes that at Whitebird, you'll find "a small campground next to the Stillwater River. Plenty of shade in most spots. Boat dock and some mellow spots for swimming."

Natural beauty and river access: The Stillwater River creates a peaceful camping environment with natural sounds. Stacey N. describes Swinging Bridge Fishing Access Site as "a great campsite. You are along a fast moving creek and the campsites are well spaced out with trees, vegetation or roads between each site."

Free or low-cost camping options: Several sites offer affordable camping. Troy M. found Itch-Kep-Pe Park to be "nice level spots. The campsite is right on the Yellowstone river. Free but they do have a donation box."

    What you should know

Limited facilities and amenities: Most fishing access sites offer minimal facilities. At Swinging Bridge, Taylor T. reports "clean bathroom and privacy between sites are probably the two best aspects about the campground" but notes there are "A LOT of bugs here" and potential issues with site amenities as "one site not having a table, another not having creek access."

Site availability challenges: Popular campgrounds fill quickly during peak season. Buffalo Jump Camp has "only 2 spots for camping here. It's a nice spot with river access, but close to road and no room for big rig," according to Mike M.

Access road considerations: Some fishing access sites have difficult approach roads. Art S. notes that Swinging Bridge has a "narrow dirt road is really only wide enough for one vehicle. Perhaps this isn't the best spot for big rigs."

    Tips for camping with families

Pet-friendly swimming options: Several campgrounds offer shallow water access perfect for dogs and children. Basin Campground is located "just a few miles outside Red Lodge, Montana at the foot of the Beartooth Mountains. The road in is paved and passes through beautiful elk country and along the West Fork of Rock Creek, a large stream coming out of the mountains," according to Bob R.

Campground activities for children: Some sites provide recreational amenities. Gay Lynn A. found Itch-Kep-Pe Park to be a "pleasant place close to town" with "nice trees, shade, grassy areas."

Bathroom facilities: Vault toilets are standard at most sites. Luckybreak R. reports at Itch-Kep-Pe Park, "Restrooms are well maintained. Lower campground is 1/2 mile further in and only has a single vault toilet."

    Tips from RVers

Campsite access and maneuverability: RV campers should consider site accessibility. At Whitebird, Art S. notes the "Wide gravel road all the way to the campground. We saw RV's in some sites so this is more accessible."

Full-hookup alternatives: For those wanting amenities, Mountain Range RV Park in Columbus offers more services. TravelingTaylors T. describes it as a "Very clean RV/tent campground just outside of Billings with full hookups and a lovely area for tent camping. Laundry facilities, showers."

Weather and seasonal considerations: Weather patterns affect camping comfort. Austin K. found Cooney State Park offered "nice little semi secluded section of beach, soft sand and the water temp was great" but warned about insects: "Went to start setting up camp and their were ants and a variety other bugs EVERYWHERE."
