Dump stations are available at nearly all parks, though some Love's locations require a code for access. Walnut Grove RV Park

Close to downtown Merriam and KC

My husbands job took us to Merriam Kansas and we needed a place to stay, we made reservations at Walnut Grove. We were surprised to find it in the middle of a neighborhood. The staff were very nice and helped us into our site. The sites were on gravel and very close to each other. Walnut Grove was both short and long term campers. There were no tent sites. We had full hook-ups, cell service, and free wifi. We had a picnic table and fire ring and could purchase firewood at their store.

During our stay I was awakened to a startling noise and couldn't figure it out until I went outside and saw the walnuts falling onto our camper. By the time we left, everything was covered(stained) tarnish brown. The park is in a walnut grove hence its name. They had a dog run which was not fenced but provided some grass for the pups. They had a laundry mat and clean showers with good water pressure. There also was a strange noise coming from the trees and when I asked the office what it was they thought it was locusts. I knew that was not their noise so I had to find what it was. After searching, I found that it was tree frogs 🐸 and it was their call. So if you are there in September listen and you will hear them, they love the walnut trees.

    Weston Bend State Park Campground

Quiet campground close to many Kansas City attractions

Campground is hilly, sites are level, gravel pads. Lots of space between sites. Electric sites, no water, but water spigots were scattered around the campground. Majority of sites had shade. Most sites are back in, there are 2 pull through sites and 2 family sites. Firewood is available for sale on the honor system near the camp host. Nice shower facilities and laundry available (one washer, one dryer). Regular trash dumpster and also recycling. Pit toilets also available. Dump station across from dumpsters and recycling. Entrance gate closes at 9 pm.

    Weston Bend State Park Campground

    Enjoyable Stay

Getting to the state park off I 29 and through the countryside was easy as the route had Weston Bend SP signage. We followed the SP signs to the campground(CG) where the gate was not manned so we headed to get water, but someone was sitting in the dump station waiting for another person to arrive so we went around this one-loop CG to see if there was a convenient spigot. There are spigots but with a larger rig, you will block the road, and/or you will be on a hill. We went back around and the person moved so we could get water. After that, we headed to pull through site 28 with electric(50/30/20 AMP) only. The site is long but has a 1/4 moon turn so we had to pull back around to get better positioned on the pad so we could disconnect our 39’ 5th wheel and F450 for our 3-night stay. There were tree branches overhead that we could not avoid. RVers next to us in site 30 had just arrived as well and were having trouble getting their travel trailer unhitched and leveled due to the pad’s slight incline and unlevel asphalt. They got their trailer positioned so they could get somewhat level. We got a solid two bars on both Verizon and T-Mobile. Due to our proximity to Kansas City, we got a lot of OTA channels. A satellite connection would be iffy in most sites here due to the number of mature trees. The trees in a lot of sites would also scrape the top of larger rigs. There’s a variety of sites with most being good for regular trailers versus tall rigs, and tent sites. They have a nice shower house with 1 washer and 1 dryer both for$1.50. There are also vaulted toilets here and there. There’s a 1.7-acre fenced dog park that includes one large area for large dogs and two other areas with one dedicated to smaller dogs. The dog area is at the front park entrance away from the campground and it would be a long walk to get there, so we drove up. There are a lot of hiking trails here plus an old tobacco barn that’s worth a look.

    Basswood Country RV Resort

Clean But Dated With Lots of Long Term Renters

We visited Basswood Country RV Resort in October 2020. All in all our experience was a positive one, but prospective visitors should know that there is a large section of long term renters that you must drive through to get to the short term sites. This gave the impression that this was less a vacation park and more of a trailer park. The facilities were clean, but older. The site we stayed in was large and level.

    Basswood Country RV Resort

A lovely place to get away

We needed a place to stop over and stumbled upon Basswood Resorts on our way back from the Ozarks. What a find! It's located 20 miles north of Kansas City and had full hookups, and even wifi and cable. It was beautiful and well kept. We were lucky enough to get a site across from one of its 5 small lakes. You could fish in the lakes and didn't even need a license. We watched kids get excited as they caught fish after fish.

There was a store which had a pizza place inside, playgrounds, swimming pool, outdoor games, a game room, volleyball, trails, and even golf carts for rent. Very family friendly place. It also had a fenced dog run which was great for the pups. Wish I would have known about this place when my children were young; they would have loved it.

It was scenic and relaxing and we will definitely stop again.

    Walnut Grove RV Park

    Location = Price

When we began our fulltime journey we stayed at this park for a couple of months and learned a lot about it. The management team was very friendly and would often disclose a lot about what was happening at the park. The park was in need of some improvements but it was clean and nice. The spaces are very tight in the travelers section and more spread out in the long term section. Many sites in the park were occupied by storage and the owners never showed up. To walk your dogs at the little park at night, you had to walk through there area. We called this the storage lot. The out of state contractors often had many loud and drunk guests which was obnoxious. They often harassed females walking their dogs to the park through the narrow street, and they were in the back section.

They had reasonable rates when we first stayed there ($40/night for in the city and $500/month). Now it is much more expensive, one night for our rig is $76 according to their website.

We never felt like it was genuinely part of the RV Community, it was more of a stop through or people were staying in the area for a job or to finish a house. It didn’t house many fulltime RVers that would continue traveling. They love to host NASCAR fans and know they are one of the closest parks to the Speedway.

Ammenities: Laundry Small Store Showers/Restroom Facilities Little dog park on the north end. Occasional BBq They were putting in Google Fiber internet when we stayed there in 2017 so I’m not sure if they completed it. Dump Propane Trash Mail

This location was the closest to our family’s homes so we have stayed there three times all together. There is a lot to do nearby and the main draw of this RV Park is definitely the location. You’re not far from downtown Kansas City, and still in the suburbs of Kansas City.

    Kansas City East-Oak Grove KOA

    Great overnight

Easy access to Interstate and pull through sites were long enough for our truck and 32’ trailer without having to unhitch. Stayed just one night as we passed through. Looked like it would be a good place to stay for multiple nights.

Clean campground. Nice grounds. Two good fenced dog parks.

Only negatives were our hookups were literally in the next site next to their table, and their fire ring was very close to our trailer.

Guide to Edgerton

Campgrounds near Edgerton, Missouri, sit at approximately 1,060 feet elevation in the rolling hills of northwestern Missouri. The region experiences seasonal extremes with humid summers reaching into the 90s and winter temperatures often dropping below freezing from December through February. Most RV sites in the area are on gravel or concrete pads, with varying degrees of shade depending on the specific campground location.

What to do

City exploration: 30 minutes to Kansas City attractions. Campus RV Park in Independence provides a central base for exploring nearby urban attractions. "Centrally located, great views, lovely staff, laundry and restroom facilities were good also," notes one visitor about this Campus RV Park. The location puts you within reasonable driving distance to major attractions.

Fishing: No license required at some private lakes. Basswood Country RV Resort offers fishing opportunities across five small lakes where guests can fish without a state license. "You could fish in the lakes and didn't even need a license. We watched kids get excited as they caught fish after fish," shares a camper at Basswood Country RV Resort.

Theme park visits: Discounted admission available. Worlds of Fun Village offers special rates for park visitors staying at their campground. "The theme park offered discounted tickets when staying at the campground and parking for the parks was included. Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun are internally connected, making it easy to walk between the two," explains a reviewer at Worlds of Fun Village.

What campers like

Recreational facilities: Swimming pools and splash parks. Multiple area campgrounds feature swimming areas for cooling off during hot Missouri summers. "Basswood provides amenities that are great for entertaining children, including a swimming pool and splash park, two playgrounds, a basketball goal, and fishing," writes a long-time visitor.

Weekend activities: Organized events for families. Campgrounds in the region often schedule special activities, particularly on weekends. "Every weekend there are organized activities such as arts and crafts, fishing contests, duck races and frozen t-shirt contests in the pool, and a Saturday evening outdoor movie," reports a reviewer about the family-friendly atmosphere at Basswood Country RV Resort.

Historical connections: Presidential history nearby. Some campgrounds have interesting historical ties to the region. "As a point of interest, this used to be a favorite fishing spot of President Harry S. Truman, check out the Mother in Law cabin—built at his request," notes a camper about A Country Charm RV Park.

What you should know

Airport noise: Flight patterns affect some campgrounds. Several RV parks in the region experience aircraft noise due to proximity to Kansas City International Airport. "The campground is on the final approach for the airport, so you get to see a lot planes flying overhead, which you don't even notice cause they are quieter than they used to be, and I think they shut down flights around 10pm," explains one reviewer.

Long-term vs. short-term sections: Different campground areas. Many RV campgrounds near Edgerton separate long-term residents from overnight travelers. "We visited Basswood Country RV Resort in October 2020. All in all our experience was a positive one, but prospective visitors should know that there is a large section of long term renters that you must drive through to get to the short term sites," shares a camper.

Small campgrounds: Limited sites at specialty locations. Some smaller RV parks offer unique experiences but require advance planning. "Small (15 Spaces) RV park located 1/2 mile from the Missouri Star Quilt Co. Most likely the reason why people come to Hamilton. Very clean and well kept," notes a visitor at Love's RV Hookup-Cameron MO 837.

Tips for camping with families

Activity planning: Schedule around park events. Families often find the most enjoyment when timing visits with scheduled activities. "This campground is a must for anyone with children. Awesome sites with full hook ups. They have several ponds you can fish from. My kids love that. Nice play area for kids as well as themed weekends with lots of activities planned that kids can do," shares a parent.

Campground selection: Choose family-oriented sections. Some RV campgrounds near Edgerton have designated family areas with easier access to amenities. "This place is very nice. Very clean bathhouses and property, friendly staff, nice pool, great fishing, fun family activities, nice camp store/pizza kitchen," reports a family who visited Basswood Country RV Resort.

Food options: On-site delivery services available. Several campgrounds offer food service directly to your site. "The store has a few things you might need. The food is ok, but they do deliver your food to your campsite," mentions a reviewer about the convenient dining option at Starlite RV Park.

Tips from RVers

Leveling requirements: Bring equipment for uneven sites. Some RV campgrounds in the region have sites that require leveling blocks. "We made a last minute decision and decided to stay somewhere near KC after a long cross country trip. Our site had a 50amp hookup for electric, and water/sewer," shares an RVer about their stay at Walnut Grove RV Park.

Site selection strategy: Request specific areas. Experienced RV campers recommend asking for specific locations within campgrounds. "Row 1 (sites 1-20) is along a busy highway with semi truck noise 24 hours a day. I recommend either paying more for the pull-through (further from the road) or the back in sites 69-82 in row 3," advises a visitor about Worlds of Fun Village.

Hookup cord length: Pack longer than standard. Some RV parks have utilities positioned at the far end of sites. "The utilities are at the far backside of the pad and based on our rig's configuration with the wet bay towards the front, we needed 25' or more of hose and electric cord," notes a camper about hookup placement at Love's RV Hookup locations.
