Pittsburg Area Campground — Pomme de Terre State Park

    Nice secluded spots

Two parks in one. The Hermitage and The Pittsburgh. We chose the 400 loop of Pittsburgh for its secluded spots. Spaces are not stacked on top of each other. You’re in the woods so take bug spray. Level paved lots to choose from. Fire rings and covered picnic tables. Lots of shade.

Pittsburg Area Campground — Pomme de Terre State Park

    Our First Popup Adventure

Our first camping adventure in the popup took us to Pomme de Terre State Park on Father’s Day of 2017. Pomme de Terre State Park is one State Park that is two completely separate campgrounds, split in half by Pomme de Terre lake. When booking pay attention to whether you are on the Hermitage side or the Pittsburgh side. Each campground has it’s own camp store, swim beach, boat launch, and sanitary disposal station.

We have camped three separate times at Pomme de Terre with all three campsites being in the 400 loop on the Pittsburgh side. This loop has been chosen due to its proximity to the bathrooms and the playground, these are key when having a 4-year-old. This loop is located in the woods with nice spacing between sites. Each site comes with a fire ring and covered picnic table. I will warn you that some of the sites on the left when you first pull into the loop are on an incline, so bring plenty of leveling pads with you if you have a trailer. If you are wanting to be close to the water this loop is not the one you will want to reserve. I would look more in the 300 loop, though those sites are gravel in case that is an issue for you, or look at the Hermitage side. The bathroom and shower house located at the entrance to loop 400 are some of the nicest that we have experience while staying in a state park. They are clean and well maintained. Located throughout the loops are vault toilets if you choose a site farther away from the main bathroom.

We enjoy the campground and marina on the Pittsburgh side. The marina is stocked with some camp essentials as well as a café for a quick bite. They also have boats, canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards for rent, for a list a prices here is the Marina’s website www.mofunparks.com. This is one of our son’s favorite stops on the trip, they have a nice selection of ice cream. The size of the marina is not large, and if it is busy the inside can be very cramped. We do prefer the swim beach on the Hermitage side it is located along a peninsula with ample room on busy days, as opposed to the Pittsburgh swim beach that is located in a cove without as much space.

When traveling between the two state parks you will travel through Hermitage, Missouri. They have a Dollar General, gas station, and some restaurants. I cannot speak for the restaurants, but we have used the Dollar General for supplies that did not make the trip. Located at the junction of Hwy 64 and Hwy 64B, just outside of the Pittsburgh side of the park, you will find an old building directly across from White’s Marine Center that is selling camp wood. The person that sells the wood will be out there sometimes, but if they are not, there is drop box mounted to one of the poles to leave money in. I was able to purchase a wheelbarrow load for $8.00, which is a much better deal than the small bundle they sell in the park for $5.00.

Pomme de Terre State Park has become a family favorite campground. We will be making a voyage here every year to continue exploring.

    Riverfront Campground and Canoe

Camping,Kayaking, fishing 13 Riverfront De, Lebanon Mo

Nestled in the woods just beyond Bennett Springs State Park is just a slice of camping heaven! Lower campground area is just a picture perfect as the campground winds along a section of the Niangua River. Campground supports any type of camping. Upper level has new full service sites. Great Owners run the well stocked store and see to your needs. Camping cabins for rent. Great shower house. Loved this place we will be back soon. Definitely a 12 out of 10!

RANGER REVIEW: I had the opportunity to review the GCI Slim Fold Cook Station. Wow what a great addition! Totally loved it. Spacious room on top. Found it to be pretty stable. Sever hooks for hanging items for quick access. Made from sturdy material. Set up and take down super easy. We used iron grill with it and found it to be a match. Also used as a buffet for feeding larger number. Very versatile . Definite 10

    Hidden Valley Outfitters

    Well-maintained on the river campground

Clean and well-maintained campground off the Niangua River. Showerhouse is ok- not air conditoned but relatively clean. Sites are nice with a parking pad, picnic table, campfire ring with grill, and lantern post. Great general store on property! Can’t wait to come back again. They’re supposed to be adding more soon.

Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area

Nice military campground on the Lake of the Ozarks

The Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area (LORA) is a great destination for camping, boating, swimming, water skiing, fishing and other outdoor activities. The lake is one of the Nation's largest man-made lakes, providing you with over 1150 miles of shoreline to enjoy. LORA welcomes Active Duty Military, Retired Military, members of the National Guard and Reserves, DoD employees with ID cards, family members and Fort Leonard Wood contract employees.  Plenty to do and see here.  Boat rentals, hiking, and others mentioned above.  The LORA Country Store carries ice, beverages, firewood and a small selection of food including snacks, milk, eggs and bread. The store also carries the basic necessities needed for camping and fishing, including fishing licenses.  Can rent a tent site, camper site with full or partial hook ups, cabins 1-3 bedroom, etc.  The marina has boat and jet-ski rentals (pontoons, wave runners, jet ski's, ski boats, fishing boats, pontoons, etc.) that are much more reasonable then other rental places in the area. Area is staffed by on-duty MP's out of Fort Leonard Wood.

Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area

Very quiet, very pretty, several issues.

Asked for a lake view cabin. We were the only ones here since it was a weekday after labor day so all cabins were open. I go to check in and it's a long sidewalk between narrow rails. Not at all easy if you are disabled and with my COPD, I had to stop several times.

I get cabin 6. If you go here DO NOT GET CABIN 6. It's the only one you can't park in front of as it's down the side of a hill. You must traverse several levels of steps down a steep grade. The office hours are over by now so I hauled what we needed down.

The lake view was somewhere past the forest so I'll take their word on that.

The refrigerator was filthy and we had no hot water. Since it was after hours all we could do is clean the fridge, make supper and wait till 9 in the morning to call maintenance.

Maintenance arrives and determine the elements are bad. At about 10:30am they started working. Spent most of our only full day watching them fix the water heater. The maintenance guys were very nice but I'm not leaving my stuff with strangers.

So basically, I spent $200 to sit on a deck with acorns falling on us or on the world's most uncomfortable couch as they worked on getting me hot water. Early morning fishing was shot.

They did say we could now switch cabins but I would need to move our stuff back up Mt Fk-That just to move it again into the new cabin, then back out again tomorrow.

It is a lovely area and the people are friendly but they need to do better. Also, warn people that cabin 6 is more cliff side than lake side.

    Happy Acres

Stayed 2 of 3 reserved nights.

PLEASE NOTE THIS REVIEW IS FOR "RV" PARK ONLY. WE DID NOT USE THE EVENT CENTER AND BED & BREAKFAST. We pushed ourselves to stay 2 of our scheduled 3 nights. This is a trailer park with RVs. All hands off for reservations and parking. Stopped in at the office and they could have cared less. Parked us next to someone that yelled at everyone she was on the phone with and although dog had a leash on was loose. We like dogs but this one was not too interested in being friendly. Maybe construction at entrance is complete now but was a mess when we were there. Wifi stunk. So this 1 star is a 0 star.....first one I have ever given.

Guide to Stover

Cabins near Stover, Missouri provide campers multiple water access options along the Lake of the Ozarks shoreline. The region sits at approximately 800 feet elevation with oak-hickory forests dominating the landscape. Summer temperatures typically range from 70-90°F with humidity levels reaching 80% during peak camping months.

What to do

Boat rentals: Cross Creek RV Park offers paddle boats and canoes on their 8-acre stocked lake. "Campground sits on 70 acres and includes an 8 acre stocked lake. Boat rental, paddle boats, miniature golf, shuffleboard, volleyball, playground, hiking and a general store," notes reviewer Sherry D.

Fishing access: Deer Valley Campground provides waterfront cabin options with direct lake access. "With no cover charge for live music and some of the lowest food and drink prices on the lake, it's a great place to relax and enjoy the waterfront views. Also have boat rentals and a nice RV park," according to myranda H.

Swimming options: Coconuts RV Resort maintains two swimming areas for cabin guests. "The top had 2 pools, shower house, and restroom all new and very NICE! The lower pools are big with scenic views of the boats and lake front," reports Fred R.

Hiking trails: Knob Noster State Park Campground features trails around their lakes. "Kayak rentals were available for Lake Buteo - kayakers were out on the lake, and the lake has a trail all around it. Nice trail. The other lake, Clearfork Lake, was great for fishing for us!" shares Kelsie L.

What campers like

Private islands: Cross Creek RV Park offers unique island camping options beyond standard cabins. "We tent camped on the island for 2 nights. It was awesome, you can fish right off the bank of your own private island within in minutes of waking up. Not as secluded as the other survivor tent site but really fantastic place," explains Barrett C.

Family atmosphere: Campgrounds near Stover maintain activities for all ages. "I love the atmosphere and friendly staff and other campers. Stayed here with other friends and families several times. Always clean and cared for. Nice outdoor pool! Kids love the mini golf, shuffleboard, and basketball," writes Keidra P. about Cross Creek.

Lake views: Pittsburg Area Campground provides cabins with scenic overlooks. "Scenic Views overlooking the beautiful lake. Each site in the electric loop has a private path to the waters edge. Sites viewable by map next to water," explains Josh S.

Party and family options: Little Niangua Campground separates different camping experiences. "There are spots for campers or tents and they also have cabins. They have a party side and a family side. Bath houses are also available," notes Brandy C.

What you should know

Road conditions: Access to some cabin areas requires careful driving. "The road to get in and out of this place is absolutely ridiculous. You can try to go 1mph to avoid potholes or washed out area just to hit the next pothole and washed out area," cautions Sean at Cross Creek RV Park.

Military-only facilities: Military Park Fort Leonard Wood Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area restricts usage to specific groups. "Hidden gem on the lake available for military (active/retired/DAV). Has full hookups, big rig friendly and has a large array of boats you can rent. A little difficult to get to it and fairly far from towns but it's worth it," explains Paul S.

Cabin placement considerations: Cabin layouts vary significantly between and within properties. "Asked for a lake view cabin. If you go here DO NOT GET CABIN 6. It's the only one you can't park in front of as it's down the side of a hill. You must traverse several levels of steps down a steep grade," warns Aaron R. about Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area.

Wildlife encounters: Wildlife interactions occur regularly at cabins. "Raccoon have taken over the park. And the state workers have done nothing. About 40 in my camp the whole week making us scared," reports Angela D. at Knob Noster State Park.

Tips for camping with families

Off-water activities: Several campgrounds offer land-based entertainment. "Kids love the mini golf, shuffleboard, and basketball. Huge private lake great for fishing and watching duck families swim by and come up to you on the grass!" notes Keidra P.

Cabin selection for accessibility: Last Resort provides family-friendly amenities beyond basic cabins. "Located in Warsaw Mo is a great place to camp. THE LAST RESORT. In Warsaw MO. friendly owner are more than welcoming. Ice cream shop and large pool on site. Great fishing," shares Cathy S.

Bathroom proximity: Consider cabin location relative to facilities when traveling with children. "We tent camped on the island for 2 nights. Had a restroom on the island, big plus for a family with 5 little ones," notes Barrett C.

Supervised recreation: Monitor children using recreational vehicles at certain properties. "Only issue was the kids being allowed on golf carts all day and late into the night flying all over both directions. Kids on bikes all night with no lights on bikes or grounds. It's a free for all," cautions Fred R.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Cabin and RV sites near Stover vary greatly in quality within the same property. "Beautiful campground, though Full hookup sites are on an unappealing parking lot. Sites with electric and water only are in nice oak woods overlooking Lake of the Ozarks," notes kate B.

Leveling challenges: Linn Creek Koa requires careful site selection. "Spacious and mostly level sites, which is outstanding as this park is on face of a hill. We stayed in march so leaves are off the trees and could hear road noise," advises Charles A.

Road noise considerations: Highway proximity affects some cabin locations. "Great place for a place to stay near the lake of the ozarks attractions. Super close to big surf and not a bad drive from all the lake has to offer. Very hilly, pull through sites make getting in easy with larger rigs but all roads through are gravel and rutted so not the easiest," explains Sarah S.

Campground access: Multiple properties feature challenging terrain. "Great experience. Access to camping ground was little difficult. It was gravel road but it was very steep hill (very common in this area)," shares Martin J. about Cross Creek.
