RV camping near Platte City, Missouri offers options for outdoor recreation within driving distance of Kansas City. Located in Platte County at approximately 850 feet above sea level, the area features rolling hills and proximity to the Missouri River watershed. Most campgrounds in this region experience four distinct seasons with hot, humid summers and cold winters, affecting camping availability and outdoor activities.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: At Basswood Country RV Resort, campers have access to five small lakes where fishing doesn't require a license. "You could fish in the lakes and didn't even need a license. We watched kids get excited as they caught fish after fish," notes Shannon G.
Public recreation access: In Hamilton, you can camp within walking distance of community facilities. "City pool and playground across the street. Only stayed one night so didn't get a chance to try those," shares Mary D. about A Country Charm RV Park.
Themed weekends: Family activities are scheduled regularly at certain campgrounds. "Every weekend there are organized activities such as arts and crafts, fishing contests, duck races and frozen t-shirt contests in the pool, and a Saturday evening outdoor movie," writes Tori G. about her experiences at Basswood Country RV Resort.
What campers like
Proximity to attractions: Worlds of Fun Village provides direct access to theme parks. "The theme park offered discounted tickets when staying at the campground and parking for the parks was included. Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun are internally connected, making it easy to walk between the two," explains John L.
Concrete camping pads: Several campgrounds offer level, paved sites. "Pads were concrete, level, clean, and well-maintained. Easy walk to Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun, with some back-in sites offering tremendous views of downtown KC," reports Scott C. about his stay at Worlds of Fun Village.
Well-maintained facilities: Campus RV Park in Independence receives positive comments for cleanliness. "Level concrete sites. We're in #22 - with wifi access point right here. 66m down, 24m up. It was so good (and the park is full) I did not bother testing my mobile plans," says Kevin H.
What you should know
Airport noise: Several campgrounds near Kansas City International Airport experience overhead flights. "The campground is on the final approach for the airport, so you get to see a lot planes flying overhead, which you don't even notice cause they are quieter than they used to be, and I think they shut down flights around 10pm," mentions Brian A. about Basswood Resort.
Train noise: Some parks have railroad tracks nearby. "Only issue was trains blowing their horns during the night," notes Carolyn M. about her stay at Campus RV Park.
Long-term residents: Many RV parks in the region mix short-term and permanent residents. "This gave the impression that this was less a vacation park and more of a trailer park. The facilities were clean, but older. The site we stayed in was large and level," writes Drew S. about Basswood Resort.
Tips for camping with families
Water recreation options: Look for campgrounds with swimming facilities for hot summer days. "There was a store which had a pizza place inside, playgrounds, swimming pool, outdoor games, a game room, volleyball, trails, and even golf carts for rent. Very family friendly place," shares Shannon G. about Basswood Resort.
Kid-focused activities: Some parks organize regular events. "This campground is a must for anyone with children. Awesome sites with full hook ups. They have several ponds you can fish from. My kids love that. Nice play area for kids as well as themed weekends with lots of activities planned that kids can do," recommends Robin R.
Splash features: Beyond standard pools, look for water play areas. "Basswood provides amenities that are great for entertaining children, including a swimming pool and splash park, two playgrounds, a basketball goal, and fishing," notes Tori G.
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategies: At Owl Creek Market and RV Park, location within the park matters. "We stayed in spot 11. It was closest to the highway, so that might bother people but we barely noticed the cars this weekend. The dog park, kid park, and dumpster are next door, so if you are social you will meet plenty of people in this spot," advises Caleb P.
Amenities for longer stays: Laundry facilities are important for extended visits. "Incredibly clean, roomy & up to date facility. Nice market with great variety. Pool table & foosball table. New machines in laundry facility," reports Beth R. about Owl Creek Market.
Wi-Fi connectivity: Internet access varies significantly between parks. "The WiFi is working well as I am working online from this location. I would recommend this location if you want to be close to downtown," comments Bob M. about his experience at Walnut Grove RV Park.
