    Birch Creek RV Park

    Nice spot for quick stop

This is a small RV park just off I-44 about 20 minutes from Meramec Caverns. It’s very close to the highway so there is lots of highway noise. Some sites are farther away so not so bad. There is easy access from I-44.

30 & 50-Amp Electrical, Water & Sewer Hook-ups. Concrete pads. Bathroom/showers are clean. Pet friendly, coin laundry. Some pull thru sites. Adjacent to the Great American Flea Market on weekends if you like that stuff.

    Hermann City RV Park

    Birthplace of Missouri Wine Country

Hermann is an amazing village of old world charm nestled into the Missouri River Valley. Picture book clock towers and church steeples among 19th century era brick cottages adorn the historic German immigrant influenced village with plenty of restaurants, shops and galleries for wandering pleasure. Hermann is right in the heart of Missouri wine country with two stunning wineries within walking distance of the campground; Stone Hill and Hermannhof...these are not to be missed. For cycling enthusiasts...the 240 mile Katy State Park Trail(nation's longest Rails to Trails Project) is just across the river from Hermann and follows the Missouri river through countless little river towns rich in history. A short distance south on highway 19 is the Swiss Meat Company, well worth a visit. The city park has an amazing campground operated by the City of Hermann. They offer full hook up sites(water, electric and sewer), water and electric, electric only, and tent camping. 18 full hook up sites are paved with grass areas and fire rings, 25 full hook up sites are on a paved parking lot(big rig friendly), and 8 electric only sites are on grassy area. A bath house with showers and restrooms are available, along with a dump station. To make a reservation please call the City Office, 573-486-5400, Monday-Friday between 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Full hookup(water, electric& sewer)…..$30.00 Water and electric…..$25.00 Electric only…..$20.00 Tent camping…..$15.00 This is a great spot for an overnight...but don't cut yourself short...it's absolutely great for an extended stay. http://hermannmo.com/campground/

    Lazy Day Campground

One of the Nicer Private Campgrounds

The campground (CG) was easy to find, located just 5 miles off I-70 with clear signage along the way. We parked at the designated registration area, and check-in was quick for our one-night stay. We were then escorted to pull-through site 17 with full hookups. The gravel pad was fairly level, and although the utilities were toward the back of the site, we had no trouble connecting. There were two sewer hookups—a nice touch. Water is shared, but the pressure was solid at about 50 psi. Sites are decently spaced, though some are closer together; ours was relatively close to the next site on the driver side. Our site had a nice yard, picnic table, and fire pit, but if someone had been in the site next to us, we would have been sharing that area. We got 2 bars on Verizon and 3 bars on T-Mobile, and our T-Mobile Home Internet worked very well. The CG WiFi was fine for email and web browsing. While the grounds have mature trees, most sites—including 17—are satellite-friendly. The 1/2-acre dog park was especially impressive. There was a mix of permanent, seasonal, and short-term guests. The park was clean, well-maintained, and featured fun wood carvings. The setting includes a pond and a trail to a small lake. A small camp store, ice, and propane are also available. Overall, this is a solid CG for overnight or extended stays. Out of the 325+ campgrounds we've visited, this one has the best rules sheet—hands down. It's hilarious, and you’ll instantly get their vibe!

    Red Maples Community

    Good for a short stay.

Making reservations: We made reservations a few weeks in advance (glad we did). We received an email with the site and instructions, which included calling to make final payment. This one, like many private parks, has limited office hours. So, catching them while they were in the office took a few tries.

The park: That all said, the experience in the park was fine. Beautiful tree canopy covers the whole park, tiny playground for the kids at the back of the park, etc. There was plenty of space between sites for our tow vehicle and 37’ 5th wheel with 3 slide outs. Utilities were close (50/30/20, water, sewer). Pull through sites if nobody is slotted in front/behind (you pull through one site to get to the other). No branches in our way (we are 12’7” tall). This park is a combo of mobile homes, transient RVs and long term RVs.

Surrounding area: There is a gas station right up the road although it was too busy / small for us so we went back toward the main Highway where there are two big ones to choose from with plenty of space to turn. Seems to be the gateway to the Ozarks for gassing up, so plenty of space and stuff.

    Meramec State Park Campground

    Mera-culously huge

Huge park with tons of amenities and options. Although there is year round Camping, the host on site advised water to each individual site will be turned off end of October for winter. Potable water is available near dump stations (hmmm....). Very well kept, and vacant this time of year, affords the opportunity for a more private camping and river experience. Clean well kept shower houses. Lodge & cabin rentals also available. Boat ramp in back of campground. Campsites with blue bands and parking stops are ADA compliant with concrete pads, elevated grills plus fire ring and picnic table.

    St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park

    RV delight

I wanted to escape the house and go camping while on the work from home order (Covid-19 happening at the time of this review), so I headed to a very local park and campground to pitch my tent. I've been to 370 Lakeside Park many times to walk around the huge lake and to hear concerts in the summer, but I had never camped there. Still haven't. I'll explain. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, they were not so keen on having tent campers. But they were very nice and gave me the general lowdown on this "in the city" campground. Since they opened the campground, most of their campers have been RV owners, and so it is really designed for the RV camper. There is a small primitive section for group tent camping, but the majority of the sites are full hookups for RVs. Some sites are pull through and some are back in. All have picnic tables and fire pits. The park has planted some trees, but they are really just saplings, so there is no shade yet. There is a nice bathhouse with free showers for the campers and pay laundry. If you are lucky, you can get a site close to the water, but it means the walking trail is right next to your unit. Trade offs, I suppose. One couple I talked to was camping long term (I think they are permanent RV'ers) and they got a free membership to the St Peter's RecPlex recreation center with their long term spot (they said something about having to book a least a month out to get this perk). One of the downsides to this location is that it is prone to flooding. It was out of commission for most of the summer of 2019 as the entire area was flooded. But the City of St Peters did a great job getting this place back to usable with new sod, a new bathhouse, and some general sprucing up. The lake is great to walk around, about a 3 mile walk or bike on a paved trail. You can see all kinds of wildlife in and around the lake- deer, bald eagles, pelicans, ducks, snakes. In the summers they have live music in the large pavilion, and you can rent kayaks and other small boats to take out on the lake as well as bikes to ride around on. The office told me that they have 24 hour on site security also. If I really wanted to tent camp, I could rent a section of the group camping area, but $30 seemed pricey for just me, and it was very soggy to boot. Or I  could rent an RV spot, but $45 was silly when I don' t need hookups.

    Onondaga Cave State Park Campground

    Clean and quiet park

We stayed one night on our way through Missouri. It’s only about ten minutes south of I-44. The campground was only about half full, so it was nice and quiet. All sites have a concrete pad for the RV and for the picnic table. Includes water and electric. Playground, laundry room, and dump station. Hiking trails available from the campground and cave tours on weekends. We stayed at site #65 which is close to the entrance/restrooms and has no campsite on either side.

Guide to Hermann

The Missouri River valley near Hermann offers distinct camping experiences across seasons, with spring and fall being particularly desirable. Elevations in this area range between 500-800 feet, creating varied terrain for campers to explore. The region experiences typical Midwest seasonal fluctuations with summer temperatures averaging in the mid-80s and winter dropping below freezing.

What to do

Cycling on the Katy Trail: The 240-mile Katy Trail connects to many rv campgrounds near Hermann, Missouri. At Beyond the Trail RV Park, campers can access the trail directly from their site. "The Katy trail borders the park for easy access to town. Beautiful views across a large farm field (soy beans when we were here) to the hills beyond with incredible sunsets," notes Sam C.

Fishing at local ponds: Pin Oak RV Park maintains a private catch-and-release pond that offers good fishing opportunities. "Nice little lake to fish in and areas to walk around in," mentions Robyn C. The pond contains "some decent sized fish," according to Chad H., making it suitable for both beginners and experienced anglers.

Boating and paddling: Several campgrounds offer water recreation. St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park provides multiple rental options. "The park/campground rents paddleboats, kayaks, and canoes in addition to different kinds of bikes. There is a walking trail around the lake (4+ miles)," explains reviewer Mats.

What campers like

Evening activities: Many campgrounds near Hermann offer special events and entertainment. Pin Oak Creek Campground hosts seasonal festivities that draw repeat visitors. "We go every October for Halloween... lots to do for the kids," notes Tim K. Another camper mentioned, "Saturday night they had a band making noise for 3 hours!"

Clean facilities: Despite being in rural areas, many Hermann rv campgrounds maintain high cleanliness standards. Lazy Day Campground receives particular praise for this aspect. "Very clean, great restrooms... Has laundry room. Nice level sites," reports Catherine D. Another visitor elaborated: "The bathhouse was clean and well kept."

Brewery access: The region's brewing heritage extends beyond Hermann to nearby rv parks. Beyond the Trail RV Park offers direct access to local brews. "Just on the other side of the trail is a great brewery with a fantastic patio and rooftop deck. We walked there a few times to enjoy pizza," shares Jamie C., highlighting the convenience of having refreshments within walking distance.

What you should know

Reservation systems: Processes vary across campgrounds. At RV Self-Park, the system is entirely automated. "You can reserve a site online or just do it when you get there as I did. After paying the power is supposed to be turned on," explains Russell K., though he notes there can sometimes be a brief delay in service activation.

Site configurations: Many Hermann area campgrounds feature varied layouts. St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park offers different site styles. "The campsites are 'state-park-size', especially the back-in sites which all have plenty of lawns behind them. All sites have a view of the small lake," explains Mats.

Weather considerations: The area can experience severe weather. According to a camper at St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park: "There was some rough springtime weather expected one day. A park ranger went around to every site and notified every camper of where the shelters were (the restrooms/showers) and gave out a flyer about the specific weather forecast!"

Tips for camping with families

Pool access: When traveling with children during summer months, having water recreation options becomes essential. Pin Oak RV Park offers a "nice pool and an arcade area with plenty of room to hangout inside," according to Chad H., providing both water activities and indoor entertainment options.

Playground availability: Several campgrounds offer dedicated play areas. St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park provides multiple family-friendly amenities. "Kids had a blast riding bikes. Even finding a few little frogs jumping around and fireflies at night," shares Joseph F., highlighting the natural exploration opportunities available.

Recreation alternatives: Look for campgrounds with multiple activity options. Lazy Day Campground offers diverse entertainment. "You can also fish here and they have lots of movies for rent. The laundry and bathrooms/showers are adorable," notes Darlene T., emphasizing the availability of both outdoor and rainy-day activities.

Tips from RVers

Hookup positioning: RVers should note that hookup locations vary by campground. Beyond the Trail RV Park requires some planning: "The site services, electric, water and sewer, are located to the front of the site and extensions were needed for both the electric and sewer," reports Craig H., suggesting RVers bring extension cords and longer sewer hoses.

Level sites: Most Hermann area campgrounds offer relatively level parking. Kan-Do Kampground gets positive reviews for site quality: "The pull thru pads were accommodating for my 50 foot rig... We had site 30- nice pull through spot with no length issues at all with our 40 ft toy hauler," notes Katy G.

Security features: RV Self-Park emphasizes security for overnight stays. "Very well lit, very clean and very easy to get in and very secure with a ton of cameras," mentions Grant, adding that despite the unmanned facility, "since it was so well lit it was a fast hookup."
