Big Spring Campground — Ozark National Scenic Riverway

      Memories of Days Gone By

The people of Missouri gave a wonderful gift to the people of the United States.  A gift I did not know about or had never heard of till we made the decision to camp in Missouri.

Big Springs was Missouri's first state park.  The CCC did a lot of construction on the park and so much of the buildings are still there.  In much need of repair and I do hope the federal government will restore.  Big Spring is off of Missouri Highway 160.  Turn onto State Route 103 to Big Spring.  The spring has a wheelchair accessible pathway that will lead right to the spring.

The campground is large and open.  Tent sites along with with RV sites but the RV sites are small and very close together.  Some RV sites had electric but no water or sewer.  There is a dump site.  During the summer I think I would get a reservation for the RV sites if you need electric.  If you have the ability to generate your own electric stay in the open tent site area.  The tent site area is large and open to the sun.  Big Springs has flush toilets and hot showers.

There are picnic areas with tables and grills scattered throughout the park along with two group shelters.

The Ranger programs are well worth checking out.  Take advantage.

The Current River makes a wonderful backdrop for nature lovers.  You have the options of hiking, biking, fishing, camping, floating, kayaking, and all sorts of boating with a ramp in the park.

      Council Bluff Recreation Area

      Basic but beautiful

The campground and lake are both beautiful. It has basic camping utilities. We ourselves like to rough it but unfortunately no fires were allowed...that kinda sucked. People traveling with pets won't be able to stay due to no pets allowed...but other than those down sides it was nice

      Greenville - Lake Wappapello

      Great place to camp!

The Greenville Recreation Campsite has much shade, level concrete pads, a picnic table and fire ring at each of the 100+ camp sites. There are walking and biking trails. Boating, swimming & fishing access is available at nearby Lake Wappapello. The campsite is actually located in the area of Old Greenville. The city was moved when the Corps of Engineers built Wappapello Dam and this area was flooded. There are still old foundations of the court house and various homes. There are also markers telling the history of the area. Truly a neat place to visit!

      Rocky River Resort

We spend the whole summer here and couldn’t ask for a more friendly place! It’s perfect, from being right on the water to allowing pets! They provide everything needed to float but your cooler and food! They will carry you up river and your float ends at the campground! Been coming here 30 years and counting!

      Bearcat Getaway

Really nice campground on the black river

I totally recommend this place ! It’s really nice place and the owners were really nice. We had a whole entire camp area to ourselves ! It’s right on the river. They have a little store, running water, decent bathrooms with hot showers and a playground. It’s an affordable place and family/pet friendly and the have horse stables there for your use if needed.

      Castor River Ranch Campground

      Awesome place

Really nice place on the castor river. The owner was a nice guy and very helpful with whatever we needed. I love the castor river. The water feels good and is clear. The castor river ranch campground in Marquand Missouri is a nice lil campground. There aren’t many people that knows about it so there isn’t hardly any campers there so we had a whole Big area to ourselves. The river is right next to the camps. The bathroom is a single person bathroom but it was really nice and air conditioned and has a stand up shower with wood walls and tile floor. There was never a wait for the bathroom it was always open. There’s also showers on the outside of the bathroom for spraying off after you get out of the river. Each camp has its own water spicket for dishes or whatever. They are very pet friendly there. The owner guy was super nice. The only complaint I have is that there is no trash service there so you have to take your trash with you but there is a winery down the road that lets you use their dumpster for $5. I also recommend eating at the winery. They have the best food, amazing people and great service. All around awesome experience with the campground and winery. The castor river shut ins is only 27 minutes from the camp so I definitely recommend going there too. It’s beautiful to see and the water is amazing. The owner of the camp will also give you a ride up river to float back down to your camp for free just bring your own tube or whatever. There is electric sites. Rv or tent camping.

      Marble Creek Rec Area

      Unusual Campground for Missouri

It is shaped by Marble Creek, from overhead it looks the piece to a puzzle, no matter where you are in the campground any direction takes you to the water. There is hiking, it is in a National Forest that allows Dispersed Camping outside designated areas and off roads. It is a pure delight natural water park, in the capital of natural water parks The St. Francois Mountains where creeks and rivers have "natural shut-ins" . The area around Black Mountain next door in the National Forest is a natural wilderness area, filled with geo features not marked on any maps and seldom ever photographed. Some of the largest gorges and canyons in Missouri are nearby, waterfalls (seasonal). Marble Creek flows into the St. Francois River a short distance away. 16 miles west of Fredericktown Missouri on Madison County Road E

    Guide to Greenville

Dispersed camping at Sulphur Springs provides access to the St. Francis River shoreline approximately 5 miles north of Greenville. The campground sits at roughly 400 feet elevation within the Ozark Highlands, experiencing hot humid summers and mild winters. The natural river bottom at this location consists primarily of rock and gravel rather than mud, creating firm footing for water entry.

    What to do

Fishing access points: At Lake Wappapello State Park's Ridge Campground, visitors find multiple fishing opportunities. "Beautiful view. You can sit in the cool clear water and relax. Great place for kids. Park is well maintained," notes Kevin B.

River activities: The Black River at Markham Springs offers alternatives to lake recreation. "We found an absolutely beautiful spot along the Black River, for only $10/night! Plenty of space for our sleeping tent and supply tent, a picnic table, lantern pole, and a bench by the river," shares Misty L.

Historic exploration: Greenville Recreation Area preserves local history within walking distance. "The campsite is actually located in the area of Old Greenville. The city was moved when the Corps of Engineers built Wappapello Dam and this area was flooded. There are still old foundations of the court house and various homes," explains Jan D.

Hiking trail navigation: Several parks connect to forest trail systems with varied terrain. "We took a girls weekend in the fall and enjoyed the trails and fall foliage... We followed a wandering trail around the edge which was interesting to attempt to follow due to the leaves on the ground," notes Shelly S. about Lake Wappapello.

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: Greenville - Lake Wappapello Recreation Area receives consistent praise for site spacing. "The sites are large and have a big concrete pad attached to the drive. Lots of bike/walking trails. We were in the very back of the campground and it was quiet," reports Ginny B.

Clean facilities: Asher Creek Campground maintains high cleanliness standards. "Everyone in the campground is only a short walk from the cleanest park restrooms I've ever seen," writes Madelyn H. Another camper noted: "Tent camped here during the week in June and the campground was only about 1/3 full. Quiet and the restrooms and showers were very clean."

Affordable options: Several campgrounds offer economical rates for pet-friendly camping near Greenville. "A great COE Park with full hook ups. With the Geezer pass $12.00 a night. All sites are nice & level with asphalt drives & concrete pads or patio area," reports Gary P. about Greenville Recreation Area.

Lake views: Many campsites provide direct water access. "If you are looking for a beautiful RV or tent site on the water, look here. There is a massive lake, perfect for a quiet day on the water," says Amy S. about Asher Creek, while Madelyn adds, "My group and I camped in two of the basic sites in Asher Creek campground and we couldn't get enough of the front-row lake view!"

    What you should know

Variable cell service: Different carriers work better at specific campgrounds. "T mobile service has 3 of 4 bars. There is no apparent Verizon service," notes Frank G. about Sulphur Springs, while another camper reports, "Great ATT & good Verizon. No OTA TV," at Greenville Recreation Area.

Site leveling requirements: Redman Creek Recreation Area presents challenges for some rigs. "Not many real level sites. Bring plenty of blocks," advises Gary P. This applies to several campgrounds in the region where terrain creates uneven sites.

Seasonal crowd variations: Popularity fluctuates dramatically through seasons. "Despite terrible storms during my stay, it was a wonderful place. The hosts and staff seemed a bit eager to have someone visit, it was rather empty for the middle of the summer," notes Jonathan A., while another camper mentioned, "We're here on a Friday night and there are only five other people in the whole place."

Maintenance differences: Quality varies significantly between campground loops. "When we drove through the Asher loop it was like a different campground! I couldn't believe the difference and was quite upset. Just because Ridge is the older part of the park doesn't mean it should be maintained any different," explains Jessica B.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds include play facilities for children. "Has a playground in the middle by the shower house. They do a Trick or Treating event at Halloween. Campers decorate campsites and the kids walk through," writes Brasley C. about Redman Creek Recreation Area.

Swimming areas: Look for campsites with protected water access. "The lake is great to swim in - very clean bottom and not slimy at all. We did take our kayaks and paddled around a little but mostly stayed on beaches and swam," shares Tammy A. about Asher Creek Campground.

Educational opportunities: Holliday Landing Campground provides wildlife viewing experiences. "The birds nesting across the lake were an added bonus," notes Kimberly, while another camper mentions, "Fireflies and owls into the night. Mist on the water in the morning: just beautiful."

Special events: Seasonal activities enhance pet-friendly camping experiences. "They also hold the Festival of Lights around Christmas time," mentions a Redman Creek visitor, providing alternative options for family camping outside summer months.

    Tips from RVers

Hook-up availability: Water access varies significantly between campgrounds. "Only electric at the sites but we are okay with that since we pull in and fill up the water tank at the faucet," explains Tammy A. about Asher Creek, while another camper notes "Three of the loops were overgrown jungles. Birch loop was mowed at least. Vault toilets only," about Markham Springs.

Road conditions: Access roads require caution at several locations. "The road down the hill is a bit sketch but fun," notes Rich F. about Holliday Landing, while another RVer warns, "The road coming in was a pothole minefield. You simply cannot miss them."

Site dimensions: Concrete pads provide advantages for pet containment. "Large patio area about 10 x 30' with fire pit & lantern pole," describes Gary P., creating ideal spaces for setting up pet pens or tying out areas while maintaining adequate distance from neighboring sites.

Seasonal availability: Operating dates vary significantly. Campers report Greenville Recreation Area operates "Apr 1 - Nov 18" while other campgrounds like Redman Creek Recreation Area remain open "Mar 15 - Oct 31," giving pet owners extended camping seasons.
