Bay Springs Lake and the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway form the natural backdrop for most camping near Saltillo, Mississippi. The region sits at approximately 350 feet above sea level with hardwood forests creating natural boundaries between waterways and campsites. Winter temperatures typically range from 30-55°F while summer brings consistent 90°F days with high humidity.
What to do
Paddle the Tennessee-Tombigbee: Access multiple launch points at Whitten Park Campground where water activities are popular. "We enjoy several afternoon paddles on this stretch of river. Outside the campground entrance the Underground Railroad Bicycle Trail goes along the road and continues to the lock for walking and peddling," notes Cyndi H.
Explore disc golf courses: Tombigbee State Park Campground offers a unique disc golf experience that winds through wooded terrain. "Disc golf course is very fun. It has an interesting layout in the woods so it is much like a hike," explains Ryan S.
Fish from dedicated piers: Several fishing platforms dot Bay Springs Lake at Piney Grove Campground. "Our 3/3/21-3/6/21 stay at Site 60 provides easy access to a fishing pier, walking paths and enjoyable sunsets," reports a visitor to Whitten Park.
What campers like
Spacious sites with privacy: At Trace State Park Campground, campers appreciate the room between sites. "Pros: Clean, relatively quiet even when full, lots of sites with direct, clean access to lakefront," shares Will G.
Clean facilities: Moon Lake Farm earns high marks for maintenance. "This is a very peaceful stop with 30 amp power and water available. Well kept and very nice host. John communicated with us perfectly. The land and lake are beautiful," writes Mike B.
Water views: Piney Grove Campground offers prime lakefront positioning. "We reserved a waterfront spot... Very nice park, nice beaches and great for walking pets," notes one reviewer who particularly valued the pet-friendly access to shorelines.
What you should know
Limited cell service: Many campgrounds have spotty connectivity. "Cell service was spotty with both Verizon and AT&T having two bars. We could text but not receive phone calls and often the internet wouldn't connect or was too slow to be useful," reports a camper at Piney Grove.
Seasonal water levels: Bay Springs Lake and connecting waterways fluctuate based on rainfall and navigation needs. "Where we camped the lake was dry and full of weeds. You could tell by the shoreline that it would be possible to anchor your water craft very near your campsite in several locations once it is refilled with water," notes a camper about Trace State Park.
Road conditions vary: Tishomingo State Park Campground has mixed reviews on road maintenance. "Overall it's always clean when we've been there but there is quite a bit of age on the campsite. Roads are pretty rough in areas as well," writes Thomas H.
Tips for camping with families
Basketball and playgrounds: Recreational facilities are available at several campgrounds. "Amenities: Fire pits, picnic tables, lantern post, grills, Bathrooms w/showers, laundry facility, multiple playgrounds and basketball courts, boat ramp, fish cleaning station, fishing pier, volleyball court, amphitheater, swim beach (seasonal)," details a review of Piney Grove.
Dog-friendly beach access: Serenity RV Park provides pet amenities. "A small playground is located adjacent to it. During our visit, the small dog run was unavailable due to maintenance or AstroTurf installation," notes a recent visitor.
Tent platforms for comfort: For tent campers with children, Tombigbee offers specialized sites. "If you are primitive camping, the tent camping area is outstanding. There are picnic tables, elevated tent platforms, places for hammocks, a porch swing and bench around a raised fire pit," writes Ryan S.
Tips from RVers
Site selection matters: At Tombigbee State Park, position affects experience. "Inside loop spots are mostly close together with very little privacy," notes Ryan S., while also mentioning that the campground is "very walkable. Small campground with access to amenities by foot."
Hookup locations: Pay attention to utility placement at Serenity RV Park. "Water and electric hookups are centrally located on the pad, though the electric connection sits low to the ground, requiring us to bend the surge protector to plug in. The water pressure was adequate at around 40 psi," shares a recent visitor.
Early arrival recommended: Dog friendly campgrounds near Saltillo fill quickly on weekends. "We went in early so we could get ahead of the weekend crowd. We were glad we did as after an easy check in at the gate, we proceeded to our loop... The loops here are a little tight and there are lots of trees so coming in late on a popular weekend could be challenging with trucks, cars, and boats parked about," advises a camper about Piney Grove.
