      Quick night stay

Ended up at this location after a crappy night in Alabama. It was very clean nice location. Very nice Mississippi State Park Campground. All the staff were very friendly and Gary was a great guy that we chatted with for a bit after checking in. Restrooms were clean and air conditioned. Family type campgrounds with friendly happy campers. We will be back a lot more in the future.

      Tishomingo State Park Campground

      Beautiful

I’m so glad I’ve finally checked this campsite off the list! It is a beautiful CCC camp that was built in the 1930s. It has primitive site, hookups, cabins and wall tents. There are lots of activities to do as well. It was sad to see some of the buildings in disrepair and I wish the bathrooms could get an upgrade. Be sure to check out the swinging bridge! There’s also disk golf!

      J.P. Coleman State Park Campground

      Narrow sites with killer views

The sites are rather narrow with varying sizes and locations for outdoor living space. Pay close attention to the states website regarding vehicle size maximums. As I walk through the park, it appears that all spots are full hookup and paved. We are on site 43 and anything longer than 30 ft will be pushing it. As it is, our 25ft trailer fits nicely, but the truck is parallel parked across the end of my site in order to be off the road. The picnic table is behind the camper instead of on camp side, which isn’t my favorite setup but we are making due. Some sites have metal fire rings, while others (like ours) have rock circle pits. Some campsites on the hill side have no picnic table OR fire pits. They also have almost no room to walk around the RV without tumbling down the hill. Sites 62 and 64 aren’t terrible, but everything else from 59 and up is pretty bad. 25-34 and 51-54 are short and back up to a a hill. Would be great for Class B or smaller travel trailers. Sites 10-24 are in a separate area from the rest. 35-50 are down on a low flat area near the water and are the best if you like a view of the lake.

Bath house in our loop is clean, not completely out of date, and heated for cold weather camping. There is a small area with 2 set of pay washers/dryers and a few vending machines.

All in all, well worth the State’s $32/night charge.

      J.P. Coleman State Park Campground

      Nice Lake View...but

      PROS

We were able to reserve 368 days prior to arrival

Very friendly and helpful check-in clerk

Fantastic view of the lake from site 45

Mostly quiet except for campground party animals until 3am!

      Concrete parking pad

      BBQ grill

Fire ring constructed of concrete pavers

      Coin-operated washers/dryers in shower/toilet facility

Small playground, pool and mini-golf course

Good jumping off point for Shiloh Battlefield

      CONS

Campsite 45 was full of litter…cigarettes butts, bones, bottle caps, pieces of chalk, straws, melted soda bottles…just nasty

Fire ring made of concrete pavers full of ash and trash upon arrival…again nasty Pedestal BBQ grill full of trash and ash upon arrival…more nastiness

Campers ignored basic rules/courtesy/respect such as keeping dogs on leash and walking through occupied campsites at anytime. One camper walking through our site complained to us our chairs on our site were in THEIR way.

      No senior discount

      Narrow site

      Site 45 not level

      Site 45 mostly fun sun

Basically we didn't experience any of the campground rules being enforced so obviously there is no management oversight at this State Park

Never saw a park ranger drive through the campground (Saturday-Monday)

Never saw a camp host or a campsite for a camp host

      Campground quiet hours not enforced

Posted "No Swimming” from campsites along lake, but that didn’t stop a sole and no one enforced it

Concrete picnic table at end of parking pad, so at the bumper of the camper

Sites very close to each other with no vegetation between sites, so no privacy what so ever

Street lights throughout campground, so not dark sky friendly

Small playground, pool and mini-golf course not walkable from campground

Trash dumpsters outside of campground…not walkable

Twisty, steep and narrow roadway into campsite...not for novice rig drivers

Due to short campsites, tow vehicles had to be creative with parking, sometimes blocking most of the campground road, again no enforcement efforts

      No WiFi

      1 bar Verizon

      Davis Lake Campground

      “Literally lake front camping!”

Davis Lake Recreation Area is situated just 4 miles from the Natchez Trace Parkway. The campground is adjacent to the Eastern shore of the 200 acre Davis Lake. 14 sites are right on the lake front offering spectacular sun rises and evening sun sets, The lake is known to anglers, and wildlife and birds are a given…we had a Great Blue Heron"friend" during our entire stay. The sites were level, paved, and all had nice spacing, picnic tables, fire pits and well cared for electric service (50 amp) and water. Bathhouses were clean and laundry was available. Dump Station. Plenty of historic places to visit in the area and groceries are available in Houlka just 4 miles away. We visited in late September with only 6 sites in use…felt like we had the place to ourselves…and being located in the Tombigbee National Forest there was no light pollution making the night sky a spectacular sight to see.

      Davis Lake Campground

      Love it

As luck would have it, we spotted this place on our Natchez Trace Parkway map and decided we had enough driving for the day. Beautiful setting among the trees and right next to the lake. Level, fire pits, charcoal grills, picnic tables, water and electric all for 20.00 a night and we didn’t qualify for any discount. Already decided we’re staying another night!

Not my style, but others love it.

Another Mississippi State Park that has so much potential, but has been neglected. The bath house is nice, but most of the sites are extremely close together. Laundry facility’s and vending machines can be found in the bathroom.

The cove with sites 10-24 seem to be the better spots in my personal opinion. The sites on the water are nice (43,45,47).

They do have cabins for rent along with a lodge and a Marina on site. Most people that camp here are coming for the lake. This is a popular place during the summer.

      Cross City RV Park

One of the Better Short Stay Campgrounds

This review is based on a short stay campground (CG). We followed our GPS right to this CG off US-45 just south of Corinth. We were instructed by the very nice owner, Jim, to call when we were 30 minutes out so he could meet us. Jim was right there when we pulled in and we had the choice of two pull throughs or a back-in. We chose back-in site E with FHUs for our two night’s stay. The back-in was easy and the site was fairly level as we had no problems auto-leveling. Water pressure was good at around 45 psi. We had no problems with utilities that were towards the back of the pad as we could back in a good distance. There were no playground, picnic tables nor fire pits. The CG has full timers and seasonal campers, who were very nice. They have a nice bathroom with a shower plus a small laundry with one washer and dryer. The washing is free and drying costs$1. We got two bars on Verizon and a clear shot north for Starlink. This CG is listed under Passport America but looking at reviews on multiple sites, Jim charges everyone the same price around$30. There’s no dog area, but plenty of room to walk your pups. US-45 is near so you get highway noise. After several attempts, we never got connected to the CG’s wifi. Corinth has all your major amenities such as Walmart, Lowes, etc. Borroum's Drug Store and Soda Fountain is a throwback in time and a great place to get lunch. Get there early though, as they fill up fast.We enjoyed our stay in this no frills, laid back, and friendly CG. We would definitely stay here again.

      Tishomingo State Park Campground

      Peaceful Camping!

We've visited Tishomingo State Park twice in the last few months.  The first was in February when we stayed at the cabins.  They have big porches, a kitchen, bathroom, and two beds which was perfect for two couples to visit.  They are quite old, but it adds to the charm of the cabins.  We had a fire in the fire pit at night, played disc golf, hiked, and walked down to the river to sit a bit.  Such a nice weekend!

Easter weekend we took our camper to Tishomingo State Park.  It was a lovely time despite the rain on Friday night!  We spent one afternoon playing disc golf and hiking.  The hiking trails are lovely!  Our dog enjoyed it too.  On Easter weekend, there is a huge Easter egg hunt for children which drew a lot of people.

    Guide to Saltillo

Trace State Park Campground offers a variety of options for campers near Saltillo, Mississippi, with sites ranging from tent camping to RV hookups. Located about 10 miles southeast of Saltillo, this park centers around a 565-acre reservoir with good fishing and boating access. The campground features both lakefront and wooded sites, and most have electric and water connections. Several campers note the aging infrastructure as a challenge, with roads in need of repair but praise the park's natural setting and direct lake access.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Trace State Park Campground, anglers can enjoy lakeside access with multiple fishing spots. "Great for fishing, kayaking to camping. The roads in the park are terrible! That's the one downside to the park," notes reviewer Amanda F. The lake is known for bass fishing, with several reviewers mentioning good catches.

Hiking trails: The trail system at Tishomingo State Park Campground offers routes for all skill levels through unique rock formations and along Bear Creek. "Love the trails. The Bear Creek is peaceful to sit beside. Hoping to kayak here this summer," shares Bruce F. The park includes a notable swinging bridge that crosses the creek.

Wildlife viewing: Puskus Lake provides excellent opportunities for birdwatching and spotting local wildlife. "We see a variety of waterfowl and a few bass fishing boats. It is a working waterway and we observe barges each day," writes Cyndi H. about her experience at Piney Grove. Early mornings and evenings typically offer the best wildlife viewing conditions.

    What campers like

Lakefront sites: Many campers specifically seek out the waterfront sites at Davis Lake Campground, which provide direct lake access. "Davis Lake Recreation Area is situated just 4 miles from the Natchez Trace Parkway. The campground is adjacent to the Eastern shore of the 200 acre Davis Lake. 14 sites are right on the lake front offering spectacular sun rises and evening sun sets," according to reviewer Stephen & Theresa B.

Peaceful environment: The quiet atmosphere at Piney Grove draws campers seeking tranquility. "Great pad sites for RV Trailer, very private well laid out the restrooms are very clean. Reasonable cost and if you have an America the Beautiful card site is 50% off," notes Michael C. Many reviewers mention the secluded nature and relative quiet of the campground.

Yurt camping options: For those interested in yurt camping near Saltillo, Mississippi, Chewalla Lake Recreation Area offers waterfront yurt accommodations with basic amenities. "The shaded footpaths make walking the trails on a hot day still enjoyable. Quiet, low humidity, and plenty of camp sites to choose from make this location a great place to unplug and relax," explains Josh G. The yurts provide a middle ground between tent camping and cabin rentals.

    What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Most campgrounds in the area operate year-round, but services may be limited during winter months. "Piney Grove Campground was full of beautiful waterfront campsites. It was a delight to be able to put in my kayaks right at my campsite and not have to drive to a boat ramp," shares Katie S. However, Piney Grove is only open from March 1 through November 15.

Road conditions: Several reviewers note poor road conditions within some parks. "The only issue was the poor road maintenance in getting to our campsite. Other than that, we enjoyed our stay tremendously and will definitely recommend to friends and family," reports Sue S. about Trace State Park. Budget extra time for navigating within some campgrounds.

Cell service limitations: Connectivity can be spotty throughout the region. At J.P. Coleman State Park Campground, one reviewer noted, "No WiFi, 1 bar Verizon." Many campgrounds have limited or no cell service, so plan accordingly if you need to stay connected.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Wall Doxey State Park Campground provides playground facilities for children, though some reviewers suggest improvements are needed. "The playground could use an update, but it does the job keeping the kids entertained. The highlight for us is the disc golf course the winds through the pine forest," explains Brandon R.

Swimming areas: Not all lakes permit swimming, so verify before promising kids a swim. "While you can boat or fish on the lake, you cannot swim in the lake so keep that in mind if you are going somewhere where you want to cool off," advises Kim N. about Puskus Lake. Davis Lake does offer a swimming beach that's popular with families.

Bug preparation: Ticks and mosquitoes can be prevalent, especially in wooded areas and during summer months. "Hardly any other people around. Very run down and lots of bugs. Stopped over here for a quick camp spot on a road trip, and it was fine for this," notes Ben H. about Puskus Campground. Bring appropriate repellent and check children regularly for ticks.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection: Many campgrounds have limitations for larger rigs. "Twisty, steep and narrow roadway into campsite...not for novice rig drivers. Due to short campsites, tow vehicles had to be creative with parking, sometimes blocking most of the campground road," reports one reviewer about J.P. Coleman State Park. Research specific site dimensions before booking.

Leveling challenges: Be prepared with leveling blocks at most area campgrounds. "Site 45 not level," notes a J.P. Coleman reviewer, while another mentioned at Cross City RV Park: "The sites are perfectly level, utilities all work great. Most sites are pull through and long enough to park without unhooking, even with longer rigs."

Hookup availability: Full hookups are limited in the region. "No full hookups but all the sites have electricity and water. Plenty of trees and amazing views from all the site. Cellphone coverage is not good here for Verizon or AT&T. Better at front of camp," explains Thomas H. about yurt camping at Tishomingo State Park, where traditional campsites are also available.
