Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Buhl, AL

Lake Lurleen State Park Campground accommodates pets throughout its various camping areas with full hookup sites for RVs and tent camping options. Dogs must remain leashed while in the campground and on the trails. Campsites range from waterfront locations with full hookups to more shaded spots in the B loop near the playground and beach area. Campers browse The Dyrt when exploring the best sites near Buhl, Alabama. The park offers several small playgrounds scattered throughout the camping areas, making it convenient for families with both children and pets. Bathhouses are clean and well-maintained, though some campers note they are older facilities. Cell service is limited or non-existent throughout most of the park, which can be challenging for campers needing to contact emergency veterinary services.

Deerlick Creek provides lakeside tent camping with individual water pumps at each site and enough parking space for multiple vehicles. The campground features large, private tent-only sites that easily accommodate multiple tents and groups with pets. Trails around the lake are accessible for dog walking, though the beach and fishing areas require physical fitness as they involve steep inclines. Wildlife encounters are common, with raccoons and armadillos known to visit campsites at night, so campers should secure food and pet supplies. For RV travelers with pets, Coaches Corner RV Park offers full hookup sites less than a mile from the University of Alabama campus, while Sunset RV provides basic overnight accommodations with dedicated dog walking areas, though without fire rings or picnic tables at the sites.

    Bama RV Station

    Good For Quick Overnight Stay

Literally right off the interstate at Tuscaloosa. Much lower noise level than I expected. Definitely a parking lot, without trees. We are in site 9, pretty level gravel site, electric and water hookup only. 2 dump stations are available, 2 dog parks. 30 dollars a night. Mostly long term parking. No firepits or picnic tables. Check in by phone, no office.

    Deerlick Creek

    Woodsy and quiet

Well-kept grounds and friendly staff. My campsite was near the bathroom/shower which was convenient.  Enjoyed the hillside view I had and the walks in the woods surrounding the campground. My dogs took me for several long walks while we were here. Pull-thru site had a set of steps leading from the parking pad to the 'patio'. Very neat!

    controller works

Peaceful RV campground in the woods

Togetherness Works is 5 mile south of I-22/US-78 along a very good Alabama 253.  Junior Beasley and his wife have owned it for many years.  When they were able they were full time RVers and have traveled extensively around the country.  There are about eight sights all gravel and level.  The back in sites have a nice deck beside your parking spot.  There are also a few pull thrus for longer rigs or those who do not want to unhook. Very safe and secure.  It is a favorite location for Tiffin Wayfarer owners to stay since it's only 6 miles from the factory.  But everyone of us would stay here again regardless of it's proximity to the factory.  Just call ahead and Junior will meet you at the entrance and escort you to your site.  They also have a laundry facility for those dirty clothes.

Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park Campground

    Camping for all!

This camp site has camping from primitive all the way to cabins. Bring your RV or camper and enjoy the views. Situated on a beautiful mountain side just minute from university of alabama. Camp beside a churning creek and listen to nature. Historical museum included with very reasonable camping fee or just a visitor charge. Very nice homestyle restaurant and creamery in site. Craft cabins to keep the kids entertained and plenty of trails for hiking. Visit the original forge site or go watch the blacksmith school and learn some tricks.

    Forkland Campground

    GORGEOUS!

This area was absolutely gorgeous. We took a trip to Alabama a few summers ago to visit family, and decided to do some camping and hiking before we went home. The drive was beautiful. The campground itself is located right next to a lake- Demopolis Lake. We later learned that this lake is actually one of the largest lakes that is on the Black Warrior Tombigbee Waterway. Thought this was a cool fact. It was pretty hot, so having this lake was definitely great. There were tons of people out on the lake fishing, swimming, jet skiing and kayaking. There is a boat ramp too. There is also some really great hiking nearby, which we enjoyed in the morning. The hike we did had some amazing views of the Black Warrior River and McConnico Creek. Nothing like getting to the top of a hike and seeing lakes beneath you! The campground was great, and had everything we needed. There were about 40 campsites total, all set up with water hookups. There is a playground onsite, picnic table area, showers, and laundry! Most campgrounds don't off shower and laundry- so this would be a great place to visit if you plan to stay a few nights/weeks. Just FYI- there are gates which open at 6am and close at 10pm. Loved our stay here, and would definitely come back.

    Pickensville Campground

    Camping in Nature

First things first, don’t follow the GPS! It will take you to the recreation area and you will have to turn around. The campground can’t be seen from the main road. Take side road on left when you see the welcome to Alabama sign on the right. If you are coming from the other direction, you’ll pass the recreation area before you get to the road to turn on. Camping was great! We had a pull through. It was quiet. Bring the mosquito spray, you’ll need it!! Spaces are nice. Be sure to check out the mirror lake within the campground. There are wooded walking docks to walk on. Really pretty! Caught a chicken hawk eating. No issues. Staff is nice. Campground does get a little flooded when it rains, but it didn’t impact our space. Stayed twice within the month. Frogs were loud the first time, second time it was peaceful.

Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park Campground

    Lots to See and Do

This is really a fun campground to take your family to but it can get pretty crowded during popular times. The park is in a great part of Alabama and is located close to a lot of the best hiking in the state. Additionally, the park is set up on an old ironworks plant where many people lived and worked. You can explore the park and learn all about the history of the ironwork industry. They even have a museum which explains the process. While we were there they were having movie night for anyone staying in the park on a giant screen. They also have an ice cream shop since it gets so hot out. We didn't get a chance to explore as many of the trails as we would have liked but we will definitely be back. My one major suggestion would be to prepare for very hot weather in the summer months.

Guide to Buhl

Camping near Buhl, Alabama offers a mix of waterfront and wooded sites across several public recreation areas and private RV parks. The region sits within the Fall Line Hills physiographic section where elevations range from 100-300 feet. Summer temperatures typically reach 90°F with high humidity, while winters remain mild with occasional freezing temperatures. Most campgrounds in the area provide water and electric hookups, though cell service can be limited in rural locations.

What to do

Paddleboarding on Lake Lurleen: Lake Lurleen State Park provides opportunities for stand-up paddleboarding on its 250-acre lake. "I took my kids camping here and we had a great time! Paddle boarding and walking around to different playgrounds!" notes reviewer Meredith M. at Lake Lurleen State Park Campground.

Mountain biking on dedicated trails: The park features multiple trail systems designed for both hikers and mountain bikers. "We will be back because of the bike trails... already have a reservation!" reports Kristi C., who appreciated the recreational options beyond the lake itself.

Fishing in calm waters: Blue Creek Public Use Area provides fishing access along the river bluff. "Large area overlooking the river that gives you a slight breeze for 85 degrees in mid June. There are a few other sites in the woods, but no breeze and mosquitoes," explains Ken H. at Blue Creek Public Use Area.

Explore Native American history: The archaeological park at Moundville contains significant Native American cultural sites. "If you are into ancient Indian mounds and seeing the artifacts they have collected this is a place you want to visit," says Jeanne B. at Moundville Archaeological Park.

What campers like

Private, secluded sites: Many campgrounds in the region offer sites with good spacing and natural barriers. "Nice level concrete pads with awesome shade. Bath house stayed clean. Nice 1/2 mile asphalt bike/walking trail. Hiking trail with hills and valleys skirting the lake," shares Eric H. about Deerlick Creek.

Riverside camping views: Pickensville Campground provides waterfront sites with unique views. "Site 129 is directly on the water with a front row seat for watching the boats and barges. Another pleasant COE campground with friendly and helpful staff," reports Cyndi H. at Pickensville Campground.

Clean facilities: Many pet-friendly campgrounds near Buhl maintain well-kept restrooms and common areas. "Bathrooms are exceptionally clean. The camp sites are big and well maintained," says Dick P. about Lake Lurleen State Park Campground.

Swimming areas: Several campgrounds feature designated swimming beaches. "We really enjoyed the beach area and the trails. Lots of mountain bikers throughout the weekend," writes Casey L. about their experience at Lake Lurleen.

What you should know

Limited connectivity: Most natural areas have poor or no cell service. "Cell/Wifi non existent. Office staff and rangers friendly and helpful," notes Cara about Lake Lurleen, while another camper at Deerlick Creek mentions, "It's in the middle of nowhere, but that's what makes it the perfect getaway."

Wildlife encounters: Local wildlife is active, particularly snakes in warmer months. "The only downside was the snakes… when we looked for one, we saw one. Literally. They were everywhere," warns Meredith M. about Lake Lurleen.

Waterfront site availability: Prime waterfront sites at most campgrounds require advance booking. "We got to enjoy the park and try out our new Overlanding setup. The river is always so peaceful even when the barges are moving all night," shares Bruce F. about Burchfield Branch Park.

Seasonal considerations: Summer humidity affects comfort levels at most campgrounds. "Large area overlooking the river that gives you a slight breeze for 85 degrees in mid June," notes a Blue Creek reviewer, highlighting the importance of finding shaded or breezy sites.

Tips for camping with families

Multiple playgrounds available: Several small play areas are scattered throughout certain campgrounds. "We stayed in the B loop and loves the proximity to the playground and beach," notes Casey L. about Lake Lurleen's family-friendly layout.

Kid-friendly hiking options: Look for shorter, easier trails suitable for children. "We took my kids camping here and we had a great time! Paddle boarding and walking around to different playgrounds!" shares Meredith M. about their family experience.

Wildlife education opportunities: The various wildlife encounters can become learning experiences. "This camping spot is at the top of the bluff overlooking the river and dam. There are some wooded spots across the street, but I prefer the overlook area," explains Steve S. about Blue Creek Public Use Area.

Consider topography for bathroom access: Some campgrounds have challenging terrain between sites and facilities. "The only draw back was if you are camped at the bottom and have to do the hill climb in the dark to the rest room," notes Dick P. about Lake Lurleen.

Tips from RVers

Leveling challenges: Many RV sites require additional leveling equipment. "Pads are all level, water and some sewer hook ups are available," notes Bruce F. about Pickensville, while another camper mentioned that at Lake Lurleen "most sites are not level, I have some broken concrete and need some TLC."

Utility placement considerations: Electric and water hookups aren't always conveniently located. "Utility connections aren't always in the most appropriate spot (often need water hose or power cable of 25ft+)," advises a Lake Lurleen camper.

Urban alternatives for convenience: For RVers wanting proximity to urban amenities, several options exist near Tuscaloosa. "100+ site campground used by RV's during football season sitting less than a mile from campus. Owner lives on property and is extremely helpful. All sites are gravel with full utilities," shares Ray S. about Coaches Corner RV Park.

Dump station locations: Not all sites have sewer hookups, so note dump station locations. "We had site 57, which was a level blacktop site that had sewer, water, cable and electricity. Dumpster located on site for trash," reports Cat R. about Sunset RV.
