The perfect spot for a romantic getaway for a couple looking for a lakeside retreat and a scenic walking trail through the pasture and woods. Enjoy the sunrise over the lake, shop in Tupelo or see Elvis' birthplace during the day, and enjoy a late evening walk around the property. It's the best decision you could make for your next trip!
Or, the best family trip you have every planned. See the look on your child's face when they catch a monster bass! Go with them to pet the horses, talk to the chickens, or hold the bunny rabbit. Our RV GPS and Waze brought us south from Tishomingo via MS-25 to MS-4 to John Rankin Hwy. It’s a more scenic and narrower road than just taking MS-25 south, but there were no issues. We had made online reservations earlier that day for this Army Corps of Engineers Campground (CG) where we get a 50% discount per night using the National Parks Access Pass. We arrived earlier than 2:00 PM when the check-in gate opens, but there was a sign to go ahead and set up and come back at 2:00 to check-in. As we had our site number, we headed directly to pull through site 9 with water and electric(50/30/20 AMP). This was our third time camping at Whitten and we were delighted to find that they had combined site 8 and 9 into one long site. This site still had the old site amenities, which meant that we had double electric pedestals, water spigots, patio areas with picnic table, standup bbq, and fire pit. We were able to adjust our 5th wheel to avoid the several unlevel areas in this very long pull through. As with most COEs, water pressure was good and the electric worked fine. Whitten CG has a lot of mature trees, so satellite is iffy. We had no north shot for our Starlink. However, we got 2 to 3 bars on Verizon and the Mifi worked well for our needs to include streaming. There’s no WiFi in the CG. Site 9 has water view and does not bump up to other sites, which we found highly desireable. During our first stay in 2019, each loop had a shower house with a washer and dryer that we had used. Our last stay was an overnighter and we didn’t need to do laundry, so we hadn't checked those facilities out. This time we were here for three nights and had planned on doing laundry only to find the doors locked. We asked the camp host about the washers and dryers. He stated that the washers and dryers had been closed during COVID and now they were no long functional and weren't going to be replaced. We again enjoyed the trail system through out the CG and recreation area to walk our dogs. The James L. Whitten Historical Center is interesting to go through. There are several fishing piers as well. We came on a Wednesday and were pretty much by ourselves. Both Thursday and Friday campers started coming in around 11:30 AM filling up the CG. The camp hosts didn’t seem to mind the early arrivals and even opened up the office around noon for a few minutes to accommodate check-ins.
Many sites decorated for Halloween. Even little trick or treaters. Many sites on the river. Cool to watch the working barges going by. And lots of armadillos.
RV spots are suitable for car camping, although a bit close together with bright street lights and showers are outdated. Still, the camp host treated me kindly, and I enjoyed the scenery and walkability!
We loved the park. Great for walking our dogs. The only issue was the poor road maintenance in getting to our campsite. Other than that, we enjoyed our stay tremendously and will definitely recommend to friends and family.
Clean, quiet and friendly. No actual WIFI but cell signals are strong. Will stay here again
We stopped by on our way home to check out the campground. First impression is that’ll we’ll be back to stay the weekend in the near future. Campground is a small for a State Park but the grounds look well kept up. The staff at check in office were very friendly and answered all the questions we had plus we got a lot of information on other spots.
From the get go at checking in we noticed how laidback and friendly the staff was. We stayed in #26 which has an incline to park the RV which wasn’t a big deal for us. We liked that on the passenger side are view was woods with the lake. The restrooms could used an updated for sure but still very usable. Fishing off the fishing docks was great! Spacing between sites is decent with trees between at most sites. Very friendly family quiet campgrounds.
I picked a location just off the Trace to camp and ended up here. Very nice lake side campgrounds. Quite clean beautiful relaxing weekend trip.
Great camping nice and clean. Next time I’ll bring the kayak and do some fishing!
It's the perfect place to stop while traveling through. There are spacious spots, a short nature trail, a swimming area on the lake, and one good restaurant just down the road.
There are some spots right on the lake.
We were in site 4 on the lake. Beautiful view! Grounds could use some updating but we really enjoyed our stay here.
This is a very peaceful stop with 30 amp power and water available. Well kept and very nice host. John communicated with us perfectly. The land and lake are beautiful.
Stayed on a weekend in March. Campground was about 80% full. Bath and showers were clean. Concrete pad with adjacent gravel area for screen room, tent, etc. Laundry facilities were closed during our stay. Paved bike trail nearby. Limited walking trails within the campground. One dump station and trash collection area near the check-in. Good Verizon signal.
Beautiful place to camp and relax. Clean campsites and bathrooms. Nice hiking trails.
This was our first camping trip as RV owners, we have been tent camping before. We loved Piney Grove! It was off season so definitely not crowded. It was so peaceful and quiet, we chose a waterfront spot and we literally had our own beach in front of our RV. So beautiful! We’ll be back in the summer.
Nice park with 3 loops and a few short trails. Reservation on recreate.gov and my spot was $30 a night which feels a bit steep but seems to be the going rate. The spots are not private at all but there are trees.
This is a gravel parking lot with hook ups. Sites are extremely close together. Not my idea of "recreation".
Location is next to the freeway and yes, it is loud. Sites are close together, you CANNOT choose your site they will place you where they want. Staff not very friendly. Price is $55/night $50 for Good Sam Club.
Off the beaten path. Power and water available for reasonable price. Walking the property was fantastic for us and our dogs. We were fortunate to be there on the last Saturday of the month, when they host a dinner and live music. With just 7 of us, including the 2 hosts and the musician, it was a very neat experience. Even had a “sing along “!!!! This is why we love Harvest Hosts. You would never get an experience like this anywhere else.
$30 per night for full hookups. It’s just a parking lot but was we needed. Toured the Tiffin factory.
The campground was full for the fall holiday. However, the energy was great. It was our first time at the park. The hosts were very helpful. The showers and bathrooms are dated but clean. The best views are located on the water in the lots 80-85. Level spaces and easy to back in.

Last minute stop at this small muni campground/park. Clean grounds with friendly host. Photo from our site #7 overlooking the lake. Non campers kicked out at 8pm and gates are locked. All campers get a key for after hours entry/exit. Beautiful little spot.
Small campground attached to a public use park. Gated after dark with older but usable bathrooms and showers. Has a splash pad, a basketball court, and several piers on the lake for fishing. You can hear cows in the distance from across the lake.
Can’t beat the price at $22/night. We stopped in for a night in our teardrop trailer on our way farther up north.
Tupelo is 30 minutes away with the Elvis Birthplace museum and other attractions. There’s a gas station at the entrance to the park for snacks and ice.
Jake from the Dyrt here! The Mississippi Art & Wine Gallery has spots to camp for those who enjoy some of the finer things. Check them out and make sure to share some pics of your stay!
It’s good
Nice campground in a state park with a lake. Campground is super small. Bathrooms are adequate. Poor cell service with AT&T and if you have starling it won’t work due to all the trees. Still, I really liked this campground. Small, intimate, tons of shade. Sites easy to get into. If you don’t have to have internet for work, this is a nice place to relax
