Whether you’re looking for a convenient base for exploring New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, or a waterfront retreat for relaxing in nature, Fontainebleau State Park offers both. Located along the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain, and named for the Fontainebleau Forest near Paris, France, the area was founded in the early 1800s as a sugar plantation. In fact, the remains of the plantation’s old sugar mill form part of the 2,800-acre state park’s visitor center and museum. The park’s diverse ecosystem—including bayous and mossy woods—serves as an expansive wildlife preserve, hosting more than 400 species of birds and animals—including alligators! The park also boasts one of the largest white sand beaches in the state, a perfect place for sunning, swimming and paddling. Fontainebleau State Park offers 116 improved campsites for RV campers, and more than 250 unimproved sites for tent campers. RV sites are equipped with water and electricity hookups, and can accommodate vehicles/trailers up to 70 feet; a few pull-through sites can accommodate rigs up to 120 feet. Tent sites are mostly primitive, with 33 designated sites and a large community area. There are also two group camps. All sites have access to water faucets, flush restrooms, and showers; a dump station is located in the upper camping area. For those traveling without their own accommodations, the park also offers cabins and group lodges. Reservations are recommended for RV sites; most tent sites are first-come-first-served. Dogs are permitted, but must remain leashed. Campsite rates range from $18–$33/night; cabins and lodges are $150–$210/night. Guests who are interested in relaxing and recreating in the park have access to a variety of onsite amenities, including picnic areas, a water playground, fishing piers, beaches and swimming areas, kayak and SUP rentals, and Wifi service. The park’s two nature trails, including a portion of the Tammany Trace Trail (an old railroad line converted into a multi-use path), are excellent for wildlife watching. Anglers can fish for various freshwater species of bass, bluegill, sunfish and catfish in the park’s ponds and creeks. Outside of the park, visitors can go antiquing in the local villages, enjoy fresh seafood from several nearby eateries, or head for the local brewery for a refreshing pint. New Orleans, and all its history, culture and flavor are just a short drive across the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway.

      Fantastic location

We stayed at the park for 2 nights as part of a countrywide RV holiday from Europe. This park was head an shoulders cleaner nicer, tidier than our previous parks. The check-in team we're lovely and went through everything and also what we could do in the area. Lovely pool and restaurant with great prices.

The shower rooms were also immaculate.

We picked a deluxe waterside plot which was opposite one of the spare moored up river steam boats.

Nice Park, 5 Miles from French Quarter

Arrive from Tiki Toms in Tiki Island, TX. We stayed for 2 nights on our way to Alabama. This resort sits approximately 5 miles from downtown New Orleans. It is a great onsite restaurant with a fabulous pool. The sites were spacious and well-maintained. A recommended stop to visit NOLA.

      Fontainebleau State Park

      Large State Park

Our RV GPS and Waze took us from I-12 through town to the campground (CG). Check-in at the gate was quick and friendly. We then proceeded to the South CG to back-in site 138; 50 AMP and water. The road to the site was a bit narrow for our 40’ 5th wheel and F450. To our surprise, there was a drainage ditch across from our site that made backing in difficult. When we reserved online, we did not see the ditch on the campsite map, but it’s clearly marked on the CG map we received at check-in. We are above-average backers and had to maneuver quite a bit, but we finally got in. We do not recommend this site for any pull trailers over 35’. The good thing about 138 is that it’s one of the few spacious sites in the CG. The sites across the road are smaller and closer to each other. We also posted a picture of the CG map. Also, not available online was a 50% senior discount that was applied at check-in. We had no issue with the utilities. There are a lot of large trees in this loop but we were able to get a clear north shot for Starlink. We had three bars on Verizon. There are plenty of long sites, but big rigs need to choose their sites carefully i.e. read reviews and possibly call the park concerning specific sites. There’s lots to do and see in this state park, but it wasn't really our thing, so we likely won't be back.

      Great last min solo camp

Park was nice, bathrooms were clean. Site was a good size, plenty of shade. I didn’t have any neighbors so that was nice! Tons of wildlife to be seen. The raccoons are smart, and not scared of humans, lol

Great staff new RV park beautifully done.

We stayed here after picking up our new 5th wheel from Dad's Camper outlet. Not even a mile away. I hope this is allowed, Cat Trent and Ricky were great with getting our new 5th wheel ready for us. Check them out for any RV needs. The staff was very nice. The campground was very nice. It is only 4 months old. All the amenities you need and expect from a KOA. The only difference is that it's new and not run down. Pull through sites are level and concrete. As you can see from my pics, it was raining quite hard.

      Nice, relaxing, quiet rv park

Me and my husband wanted a nice little getaway from the house so we decided to try out Clear water. It’s a very nice and relaxing rv park. I told my hubby it’s a retirement home but for campers 😅 a lot of snow birds from Michigan! We had a great time especially loved the fire ring we had on our lot which was great to have during the cold weather. Most of the other campgrounds I’ve been to haven’t had any kind of fire rings. The man that runs it takes very good care of the campground and when you buy firewood he actually bring it to you at your lot which was really great! They had a beautiful lit up pond with a fountain and water wheel at night. We had our two daughters with us which they loved going on a walk around the park and looking at the ducks. Just about everyone is friendly there. I’m going to go ahead and give it 5 stars but I wish there would have been a playground in the campground, but I understand they typically have snowbirds and not a lot of young couples with kids. But it was still nice and we really enjoyed it! They had a park down the road so we decided to just drive and take the girls to it. There is also a family dollar/dollar tree and a dollar general down the road which was about less then 4-5 mins away which was great and very convenient.

      Great campground

Stopped here for 1 night between Lake Charles and Tallahassee. Great half way stop.  Federal National Seashore campground. Make reservations on recreation.gov.  Very nice campground hosts pulled up in their golf cart while they were making rounds around the campground and checked us in.  Clean, level parking. I was in spot 1 which was well shaded. Stores within 5-10 minute drive. Will definitely stay here again.

      Great place to stay

I love this place. It has easy access to the Tammany Trace bike path, hiking trails, a beautiful beach and incredible views of Lake Ponchartrain. I was only going to stay two nights but extended my stay for two additional nights. I really didn’t want to go when I left but I had to ease on back towards home so I could be there in time for Christmas.

      Beach was fantastic

We loved our trip here! Playground, beach and splash pad were fantastic. Clean bath houses and very nice staff. I would suggest staying in the lower numbered sites, they are newer are larger, great for big rigs! Lots of pull-through sites that aren’t on top of your neighbors. Some of the higher numbered sites you can tell are a bit older and closer together.

      Great Location and Amentities

Stayed for a couple of days; weekend into weekday. It was a 50% reduction in people from weekend (full) to weekdays.

Super easy access to the causeway: took us 50 mins to get to the WWII museum and 15 mins to a Whole Foods. Sites are well spaced apart and easy to get into. Between their website and Google Maps, it's really easy to pick a site you'd prefer.

Campground is perfectly located in the park, near the beach and trails, but not too close to worry about day traffic.

Had excellent crab cake and bisque. -2 roadways to enter/exit resort. A car can drive toward north but some potholes would not advise RV on road toward lake pontchaitrain.

      Interesting location, a hidden gem.

The biggest drawbacks are the drive up and the ... Flight for life? Helicopter that keeps passing over. The amenities are top notch, the sites are great. The price is a premium, but it's legit. We wanted a presidential site for its private hot tub, but apparently the one available isn't free for our duration. We got one next to it and it shares the excellent Waterfront view. The communal pool and hot tub are great to relax in after our long drive in. Looking forward to exploring the city which is right down the road.

      Excellent location

This was a really great campground! The location to Ocean Springs and Biloxi is perfect. You get real campsites instead of an RV parking lot.

The campground has recently been repaved: the sites are nice and level. The bathhouse was clean. Showers are separate from the toilets. They had multiple Ranger led evens scheduled every day! The visitors center is nice as well. The rangers really seemed to enjoy talking with us and answering our questions about local wildlife. Sadly, we didn’t see any gators while we were visiting.

Also, the boardwalk trail is still damaged and closed. I hope they get the funding to be able to get this back open again soon.

Overall, we had a great experience and plan to return again in the fall.

      Quiet and beautiful spots

We spent 4 nights in two different pull through spots. We loved being able to walk, explore, and breathe in nature right from our RV.

The laundry room was nice, the bath rooms were nice, and the trees and forest were lush! Starlink did great here for us although some sites would have heavy obstructions. We looked at the map and satellite ahead of booking for a good north skyline. We would certainly stay here again. We used this area as a basecamp to explore New Orleans with a 50 minute drive away.
