The Tombigbee and Tennessee waterways define the camping landscape near Guntown, Mississippi. Located in the northeastern corner of the state, this area features elevation changes unusual for Mississippi, with some campsites sitting over 400 feet above sea level. Summer temperatures frequently reach the mid-90s with high humidity, while winters remain relatively mild with occasional freezing temperatures.
What to Do
Kayaking the waterways: Whitten Park Campground offers excellent paddling opportunities along the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. "We enjoy several afternoon paddles on this stretch of river. Outside the campground entrance the Underground Railroad Bicycle Trail goes along the road and continues to the lock for walking and peddling," notes Cyndi H.
Disc golf courses: Tishomingo State Park Campground features multiple disc golf courses through wooded terrain. "Great for families with many hiking trails and 3 disc golf courses," reports K S. The courses wind through natural forest settings with varied terrain.
Fishing opportunities: Bay Springs Lake at Piney Grove Campground provides excellent fishing access directly from campsites. "It was a delight to be able to put in my kayaks right at my campsite and not have to drive to a boat ramp," shares Katie S. The lake supports bass fishing and various waterfowl can be observed from shore.
What Campers Like
Level, maintained sites: Tombigbee State Park Campground offers well-maintained camping spots with full hookups. "All sites close to the bathhouse. Most sites with full hook up including sewer and 30/50 amp plugs," notes Ryan S. The campground features concrete pads for easier setup.
Waterfront views: Bay Springs Lake provides scenic campsites at Piney Grove. "We literally had our own beach in front of our RV. So beautiful!" shares Maria S. Many waterfront sites allow direct water access for small watercraft.
Trail systems: Whitten Park Campground includes walking paths throughout the property. "We again enjoyed the trail system through out the CG and recreation area to walk our dogs. The James L. Whitten Historical Center is interesting to go through," writes MickandKarla W. Several fishing piers and walking trails connect campground sections.
What You Should Know
Site spacing variations: Some campgrounds have limited privacy between sites. At Campground at Barnes Crossing, "Sites are pull through and on gravel. Relatively close to one another but not bothersome," according to Mandy B.
Weather considerations: Summer camping requires preparation for heat and humidity. Spring and fall offer more comfortable temperatures but come prepared for occasional storms.
Cell service limitations: Coverage varies significantly by location. At Piney Grove, "Cell service was spotty with both Verizon and AT&T having two bars. We could text but not receive phone calls and often the internet wouldn't connect or was too slow to be useful," reports MickandKarla W.
Tips for Camping with Families
Playgrounds and activities: Multiple campgrounds offer family-friendly amenities. Ryan S. notes about Tombigbee State Park: "Great for young kids because the campground is small with a flat loop that is easy for bike riding, skating, or scooters. It is easy to see the kids from your campsite and not worry about them getting lost."
Swimming options: Trace State Park Campground provides lake access for families. "Our site backed up to the lake and was beautiful! Lots of activities and has a marina. Fishing was great," shares maureen L. The park maintains swimming areas during summer months.
Dog-friendly considerations: Many campgrounds near Guntown welcome pets with specific rules. At Piney Grove, families can "enjoy the trail system throughout the CG and recreation area to walk our dogs," mentions MickandKarla W. Most trails are suitable for children and leashed pets.
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategy: Choose sites based on size requirements and utilities. At Whitten Park, "We suggest reading reviews on various websites to find which sites will better fit your rig. The pad lengths on the reservations website seemed to be accurate," advises MickandKarla W.
Alternative accommodations: For smaller setups, Moon Lake Farm offers unique camping near Guntown. "This is a very peaceful stop with 30 amp power and water available. Well kept and very nice host. The land and lake are beautiful," shares Mike B. The property includes kitchen access and shower facilities.
Road access considerations: Some campgrounds have challenging access roads. At Tishomingo State Park, "Our RV GPS and Waze brought us south from Tishomingo via MS-25 to MS-4 to John Rankin Hwy. It's a more scenic and narrower road than just taking MS-25 south, but there were no issues," notes MickandKarla W.
