Best Cabin Camping near Watervliet, MI

Several cabin campgrounds in the Watervliet area offer varied lodging experiences from rustic to fully furnished options. Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday provides cabins with electrical hookups, water, and bathroom facilities. Covert Park Beach & Campground features cabin accommodations with similar amenities plus proximity to Lake Michigan. Dune Lake Campground offers more rustic cabin options that provide shelter while maintaining a traditional camping feel. A camper wrote, "The cabins have three queen beds and a sofa sleeper so they can comfortably hold up to eight people. There's a large table inside and two chairs on the porch. There's also a large picnic table outside, a fire pit, and a grill."

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Kal-Haven Outpost features cabins that accommodate larger groups, while Warren Dunes State Park offers more basic cabin structures. Most locations require reservations, especially during summer months from May through October when demand peaks. Shamrock Park and Eden Springs Park Campground provide year-round cabin options with varying amenities. Pet policies differ significantly between properties—Coloma/St. Joseph KOA Holiday permits pets in some cabins while Black River Trails Campground prohibits pets entirely. A recent review noted, "We usually tent camp but tried a cabin here this year. It was the perfect option as the campground is right off the trail. They provide linens and have basic supplies right at the general store."

Most cabins include beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Kitchen facilities vary widely—some cabins offer only outdoor fire pits with grills, while others include indoor cooking options. On-site camp stores at locations like Kal-Haven Outpost and Covert/South Haven KOA sell essential items including firewood, which some campgrounds will deliver directly to the cabin site. Refrigerators are not standard in all cabins, so coolers may be necessary for food storage. Basic cleaning supplies are recommended as most cabins require guests to tidy up before departure. Nearby towns provide additional grocery and supply options for longer stays.

    Kal-Haven Outpost

Great place to bike to, spacious cabins, amazing staff

A group of us bike from Kalamazoo to South Haven every year using the Kal-Haven trail. We usually tent camp but tried a cabin here this year. It was the perfect option as the campground is right off the trail. They provide linens and have basic supplies (including firewood that they will deliver to your cabin) right at the general store. We also met a group that had hiked in to the primative sites and were using the trail to train for the Appalachian Trail. Everything is well-made and maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful (they even let us check-in early when we biked in ahead of schedule). Highly recommend for those looking for a place close to the trail and to South Haven. The cabins have three queen beds and a sofa sleeper so they can comfortably hold up to eight people (we had five in our group and I never felt crowded). There's a large table inside and two chairs on the porch. There's also a large picnic table outside, a fire pit, and a grill. They are hoping to expand and add cabins sized for couples in the near future.

    Thousand Trails Bear Cave

    Great Campground

This is a nice, family friendly campground. Lots of very friendly other campers, a heated pool, playground for the kids, nice size lots with fire pits, picnic tables, electric& water (including at tent sites). Pool has an ADA lift chair. 2 shower/bath houses, camp store, a real bear cave you can tour in (free), a creek that meanders through it. The resort sits on the St. Joseph river & this park has a boat ramp & dock for fishing. There is a gate that campers need a code to get into so it keeps out unwanted’s. Nice staff. Yolanda is a great manager. Security, a ‘honey wagon’. Laundry center. Quiet hours are 10p-8a. It’s near Buchanan Michigan and the RED BUD Motor Cross track. Very friendly people, always stopping and talking.

    Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

    Amenities include:

    - a community fire pit

    -  game room with television

    - guest laundry

    - dump station

    - gift shop

    - pet friendly options

     -WiFi

    - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp Resort-South Haven, MI

This is my top pick for South Haven

Although this campground has great amenities, a pool, clean showers, and good sites/cabins, it is hard to book. If you know you are going to come to this area and camp, you need to book it a while in advance. I have used a pop-up and there was good space between campers. When I tent camped, we had a great spot near the cafe, the showers are amazing over there, they are more secluded. Our tent spot had electric, water, picnic table and fire ring. We camped on the grass and there is gravel to park your car. This campground is a perfect place to stay when visiting surrounding towns and going to the beach.

Don’t forget to go to Sherman’s!!

There was a forecast or rain, don’t mind the tarp

    Weko Beach Campground

    Great little campground

Couple minute walk to the beautiful Lake Michigan beach. Waist deep most areas, waves can get big tho. The campgrounds beach is NOT pet friendly, but there is a flat boardwalk that takes you to a pet friendly area of beach of neighboring Warren dunes state park. Clean easy to locate water/trash/office areas. Friendly staff. They check the loops frequently and keep things tidy. Sandy but drivable roads(be careful in a washout). Flat nice sized lots. Clean bathroom/shower house! (Males and females share showers, could be concerning during busy season). Peaceful and quiet. Loved everything about our trip. (Be warned the camping lots are sand too, you will have sand everywhere! But its worth it!)

    Eden Springs Park Campground

Pleasant, friendly, small town camp with large pull through spots

Eden Springs Campground & RV Park in Benton Harbor, Michigan, run by camp manager Cindy, may well be one of our favorite small town parks! We are spending the month of August 2018 here and have found the venue quiet, well maintained, friendly and inexpensive ($375 for a month). I do not expect the prices to stay this low now that it has been “discovered”. They are working on adding an updated restroom, dog park and other facilities. The sites are large, level and spaced far apart from each other. We pulled in with a 42’ rig, pulling a 28’ hybrid trailer (total 70’) and easily pulled into our site without having to unhook. We had enough space to park a jeep in front of and and in back of the attached rig. The sites are designed so that no camper or RV faces a sewer connection. All of the hook ups are centrally located between two sites, with each rig having their driver side towards the hookups and their awning/entry sides facing the opposing side. Each site has a gravel space between them that could be traveled through, though campers all set up picnic tables, chairs and campfires there so practically there is no egress, thus privacy. This camp has the best WiFi of any camp we have ever stayed at. Some spots offer OTA TV and satellite reception. Ours did not as we chose to have a full tree canopy. Most of the sites offer Full Hookups with 30/50 amp service. The camp manager, Cindy, provides fire rings and picnic tables as requested, so, if you need either, just let her know when you call. The tables were clean and in good shape. The fire rings can be placed anywhere you want. As an aside, when a camper leaves, Cindy and her crew comes and removes the rings, cleaning up the residue so there is no mess left! The campground grass is cut routinely and “weed-whacked” as needed. Cindy has been one of the nicest hosts we have met on our travels. She is always pleasant, available as needed for emergencies and even delivered our mail one afternoon. She is a font of knowledge about the area and willing to share. Probably in keeping with her personality, the majority of the visitors here have been friendly, chatty and willing to help each other. The RV resort is about 10 minutes from St. Joseph, MI and multiple rural wineries in the area (a favorite pastime for my wife Audrey). St. Joseph’s is a small town located on Lake Michigan with excellent food, event venues and a lovely white sand beach. Be sure to stop at the Chocolate store in town & Silver Lake Pizza for a desert/dinner well worth the time. The town of Benton Harbor itself once was booming city/community, which has come into hard times, but we did not have any problems traveling around that area. This area also has a non-defunct amusement park attached to the campground which is being slowly renovated by a group of volunteers. They have restored several of the buildings, a fountain and a miniature train which takes visitors on a 1/4 mile ride on Saturday/Sunday. Additionally, the camp is home to it’s own 1800’s era baseball team which plays home and away games in the old bare handed style! Behind the camp is a now mostly abandoned religious enclave called the House of David which was started in the late 1800’s/ early 1900’s (Google it!). Some interesting architecture and several restored mansions for the 5 remaining members of the group. I recommend this park for someone wanting a quiet, clean stay.

    Warren Dunes State Park Campground

    Amazing beach, family friendly campground

All Inclusive! If you love a campground 3 minutes from Lake Michigan with plenty of amenities, this is your place. The Mount Randall campground has 2 loops with all electric sites. The first loop on your left provides more privacy with pull in type shandy, sites. There are 2 or 3 small rustic cabins as well. The loop to the right, has more open sites that sit flat to the road. We camped here. Our 2 sites did not provide trees for hammocks or even a good laundry line. Both loops have a central bath house with individual showers opening off the central breezeway. There is a camp store with wood ice, snacks, fun stuff and things you forgot or never knew you needed! We visited during the pandemic and only 2 water pumps were available, but worked fine. There is a primitive/rustic campground as well and we may like that better as we prefer privacy and quiet over convenience.

The beach is a good one. There are 3 parking lots and plenty of sandy beach. You can climb the dunes and hike the dune trails, rent kayaks, or grab food from the concession area. There were also food trucks there when we visited.

Overall, a great choice for summer fun with the kids and I would think pretty gorgeous come fall too.

    KOA Campground Middlebury

    Decent for a quick stop

Got us in last minute when our other plans fell through. Site was only $35 for a back in water/electric. Grateful for it but wouldn’t have booked this otherwise. Site was unlevel and ran into a hill on the back end. Not much space on ether side of us. Corner lot and the rec center and basketball court was directly behind. Kids cutting through the campsite all the time.

We called several times before anyone answered and the store was clearly understaffed. Although the staff was kind and doing their best. Picnic table is on its last legs and fire ring looked like it was run over. Overall it was a little shabby but definitely not bad. Good for a place to sleep but I wouldn’t book a week here. Not many restaurant options either and also no signs for this one on the highway.

    Potato Creek State Park Campground

    Great Family Camground

We have visited this campground twice now. The first time we stayed in one of the cabins. The cabins are large, bathroom was very clean, large screened in porch. Only con was that the cabins all share one large firepit. This past weekend we stayed in a camper. The sites were a nice size. Clean sites. Bathrooms were decent for a campground in my opinion. The kids had a great time riding bikes, playing on multiple playgrounds, and playing in the lake all day.

Guide to Watervliet

Cabins near Watervliet, Michigan provide year-round lodging options with varying levels of amenities and access to nearby water recreation. The region sits along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, featuring sandy beaches and wooded inland areas with elevation changes from lakeside dunes to forest terrain. Winter cabin camping remains available at select locations, with temperatures averaging 20-30°F from December through February.

What to do

Lake swimming and fishing opportunities: At Dune Lake Campground, visitors can enjoy both the campground's own swimming lake and nearby Lake Michigan beaches. "Nice swimming lake with a shallow area that's great for kids. Quiet, family oriented and well maintained," notes Dan W. The pond is ideal for swimming while the dunes provide exploration options.

Trail access for hiking and biking: Kal-Haven Outpost offers direct access to the Kal-Haven Trail. "It is a 4-mile paved trail running from South Haven to the Van Buren State Park," explains Cindy B. The campground also maintains walking paths through its wooded areas for shorter hikes directly from your cabin.

Winter activities: While many campgrounds close seasonally, Shamrock Park provides year-round cabin availability with winter fishing access. "Village owned and operated campground, right on the St. Joseph River. Open all year," reports Michael. Winter cabin stays allow ice fishing access and snowshoeing opportunities.

What campers like

Clean, updated bathroom facilities: Cabin campers at Coloma/St. Joseph KOA Holiday appreciate the well-maintained facilities. "The showers were very clean & had good pressure & hot water," notes Cassie B. This provides comfort beyond basic cabin amenities, especially for those staying in more rustic units.

Delivery services at campsites: Many cabin locations offer convenient service delivery. "They'll bring you firewood within a few minutes of texting them and they charge it to your credit card on file," explains Landon C. about Dune Lake Campground. Similarly, at Covert Park Beach & Campground, "Ice and firewood are abundantly available and can be delivered to your site," according to Jessica D.

Activity options for non-beach days: Cabin rentals at Warren Dunes State Park Campground provide multiple recreation options. "Nice paths for walking or biking. There are multiple playgrounds for the kiddos," writes Traci J. These activities supplement beach time with alternatives during cooler weather or for variety.

What you should know

Seasonal availability limitations: Most cabin facilities operate from April/May through October. "Season: April 28 to October 1" at Dune Lake Campground means winter options are limited to year-round facilities like Shamrock Park and Eden Springs Park Campground.

Varied electrical capacity: Cabin electrical systems differ significantly between locations. Some provide standard outlets while others offer limited power. "Cabins with electrical hookups, water, and bathroom facilities" are available at some locations, while more rustic options have minimal electrical service.

Reservation timing considerations: Eden Springs Park Campground fills quickly during peak periods. "The sites are designed so that no camper or RV faces a sewer connection," explains Bart S., which creates more privacy but reduces total capacity, making early booking essential.

Tips for camping with families

Consider cabin size needs: Family cabins at Kal-Haven Outpost accommodate multiple age groups. "The cabins have three queen beds and a sofa sleeper so they can comfortably hold up to eight people," explains a visitor. This allows extended families to share a single unit rather than splitting across multiple cabins.

Look for family-specific amenities: Campgrounds prioritize different family features. "Heated pool and lots of activities for kids. Camp with blueberries right outside your door!" writes Amy J. about Covert/South Haven KOA, highlighting unique seasonal food experiences that complement standard playground equipment.

Check weekend programming schedules: Many locations offer structured weekend activities. "They have movie nights, we met Disney characters, did crafts, and enjoyed the barrel train & ice cream sundaes," Cassie B. notes about Coloma/St. Joseph KOA Holiday, emphasizing that timing your stay to coincide with these events enhances family experiences.

Tips from RVers

Consider cabin alternatives during RV maintenance: Cabins provide RV owners temporary lodging options. "We usually tent camp but tried a cabin here this year. It was the perfect option as the campground is right off the trail," explains a reviewer about accommodations near biking routes.

Storage considerations for longer stays: Limited refrigeration and storage presents challenges for extended stays. "Refrigerators are not standard in all cabins," confirms a camper, recommending coolers for food storage when staying more than a weekend.

Mixed-use campground timing: At Covert Park Beach & Campground, timing affects density. "We stayed Sunday to Saturday, so we got to see it at its bustling weekend peak and the quiet, cozy weekday vibe," reports Jessica D., suggesting midweek cabin stays for those seeking more solitude than weekend crowds allow.
