Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Pentwater, MI

Mears State Park Campground welcomes pets on both tent and RV sites, providing shoreline access to Lake Michigan. The campground features 121 sites within walking distance of Pentwater's downtown area where camping with dogs is permitted year-round. Hill & Hollow Campground & RV Park offers similar pet-friendly accommodations with spacious sites for RVs, tents, and cabin camping. Dogs must remain on leash throughout all campgrounds in the area, with most parks limiting pets to two per site. Meticulously clean facilities characterize these establishments, though sites at Mears tend to be quite close together with little privacy between neighbors. The beach is easily accessible from most pet-friendly campgrounds, allowing for walks with leashed dogs along Lake Michigan's shoreline.

Whispering Surf Campground at Bass Lake provides a wooded setting where dogs are welcome while camping. Nearby hiking trails accommodate leashed pets, with short walks over dunes via stairways leading to Lake Michigan beaches. Both tent and RV campers find ample pet exercise opportunities along the shoreline and in designated camping areas. Bass Lake offers additional water access for dogs who enjoy swimming. Most campgrounds in the Pentwater area maintain strict pet waste disposal policies with designated stations throughout the grounds. Summer months bring higher occupancy at these pet-friendly sites, making advance reservations essential for those traveling with animals. The town of Pentwater is just minutes away, offering veterinary services and pet supply options for campers who need to restock during their stay.

    Poncho's Pond RV Park

    Loved It!

This park is a very nice RV park. All 257 sites are full hook-up (with cable), level, and have paved patios and for a $2 up charge you can get a paved site. Our site was super long (over 100’) and had a nice view of the large pond. There is pretty good separation between sites and on one side of us were large bushes that added privacy from our neighbors and the adjacent pathway. There are tent sites set off along one area of the park near the bathrooms. There are a few trees among the tent sites but they are not very private and located near the garbage dumpsters/recycle bins and on a main exit thoroughfare. There are also three “haciendas” for rent.

One of my favorite features of the campground was the fitness center. Poncho and his wife are triathletes so the facility is top notch with weight machines, free weights, cycles, treadmills, elliptical, medicine balls, and lots of bands. There are three heated pool on the property – two outdoor and one indoor with and two spas. Since we were there in mid-October the outdoor pools were closed but the indoor hot tub and pool were open (albeit, super crowded on the weekend with kids). There are two laundry rooms and three bathrooms that are very modern and clean. One of the cable television stations displays security camera footage around the property which was nice because I could see how full the laundry was before carrying all my stuff there. There is a game room for kids, playground, shuffleboard, and a clubhouse. There is a stocked pond on the property but it is only for kids (17 and under) to fish in. Cable television yielded 55 channels and WiFi was available at our site with a decent signal. The campground is very well-maintained with nicely mowed grass. The grounds crew was always working but they were not annoying with constant loud machines. There is a railroad track that runs behind the park but it does not get a lot of use so the noise was not too bad. If you don’t want to be near the tracks, ask for a site away from the south side of the park. There is an off-leash dog park but it really is too small and narrow for big dogs.

The campground is very convenient to lots of shopping and restaurants and within walking distance of a McDonalds, fruit market, drug store and grocery. Downtown Ludington is only about five minutes away which has a cute downtown with shopping, galleries, and restaurants. Ludington State Park is about 15 minutes away and has miles and miles of hiking trails and beach access. There is also a city park downtown which is along Lake Michigan with beach access and lots of room for a nice walk (but dogs are not allowed). The office staff was super helpful pointed out places to hike and things to do for the weekend. Also loved that they gave us a choice of sites and let us drive around the campground (in their golf cart) and pick out the one we wanted.

We camped here in an RV and really couldn’t find anything we didn’t like about it. New customers get a 10% discount and during our stay we fell into low season and nightly rates were discounted 50%. So for $28/night we got a really nice site with lots of amenities in a great location. If you are looking for a nice RV park at a great price near a nice coastal Michigan town, give this place a try.

    Dunes Harbor Family Camp

    Hands down favorite campground!

    This place is FUN!!!

The campground in itself is a blast. The waterpark, playground, hammock area, swings, biggest sand box ever, all the activities, and can’t forget the ice cream shop!!!

Then add in ATV access from the campground, waterfront sites to park your jet skis, and horse rides onsite!!

We never really wanted to leave! The staff were awesome! The grounds are well maintained and they have the best grass. Lol

My only suggestion would be to put in a fenced in dog park, but other than that, this is a must stop if ever in the Silver Lake area.

    Silver Lake State Park Campground

    Holiday Park Campground

Silver lake is one of the most beautiful areas you can go in all of Michigan. With dunes of it's own, & a perfect, calm crystal lake - it's great for swimming, kayaking and photography. Holiday Park campground was on the south shore of the lake, had a swim area, boat launch, and was immaculate. Pets were allowed and sites were very level for trailers. All sites had electric hook ups and they are sectioned out by environment, like woods, lakeside, up on the ridge line, and there's even island sites. I prefer the lake and island sites if you can get them. There's something about waking up to that lake that is dreamy!

    Claybanks Township Park

    New Friends and Sunsets

This is a great little camp ground right on Lake Michigan. Pretty open so not a ton of privacy but a nice set up to meet new friends. The campground sits above the lake so be ready to trek up and and down a large set of stairs but the beach and views are worth it! Water, outhouses, ice and firewood available. No showers. Pet and family friendly.

    Lake Michigan Family Campground

Good place for families to relax

A United Methodist Campground now open to the public instead of just for church camp, this is a nice location for families to enjoy some downtime, with access to Lake Michigan and plenty of activities available to pass the the time.

The sites vary in size but several can accommodate very large rigs. The whole place feels tucked away into the woods but you're only about a 10-minute drive from downtown Pentwater.

Short hike over the dunes (via stairway) takes you to Lake Michigan. (They have a great viewing platform for sunsets!)

Campground is getting regular updates each year, including a new 2-spot dump station (2 years ago), and new water and electric (50 amp) hookups at the sites continually being added.

They offer everything from RV and tent sites to platform tents and cabins. They have a great staff that cares about visitors enjoying their time there.

Cellular signals can vary greatly within the camp, but we found signals for Verizon and Google Fi (T-Mobile/Sprint) with decent service.

Hill & Hollow Campground & RV Park

    Location is perfect!

Campsite is located 2 miles from downtown Pentwater, adorable small town on the water. Mears state park is 2 miles from the campground as well, Lake Michigan beaches. The playground on the beach is perfect for younger kids. There is a pavilion that serves hot food and ice cream ( hot food ends at 5pm/ ice cream till sunset.) Our kids loved walking in town and heading to the beach.

With that said, there is plenty to do at the campground . Outdoor pool, AJs (putt- putt golf, arcade, playground, go-karts) extra fee for AJs but reasonable priced, basketball court, volleyball court, small baseball diamond, tennis table, general store, shower house by pool ( very clean), private bonfire pits ( most campsites).

Seasonal’s were very friendly and helpful with local things to do. RV camp, Tent camp, or tent cabin.

Dump station available, firewood for sale, ice for sale, general store has several camping items, 15 minutes away is meijer in ludington. 2 minutes away gas station 2 minutes to Lake Michigan beaches 2 minutes to Pentwater downtown shopping

    Orchard Beach State Park Campground

    no beach access

Pretty standard Michigan State Park campground. Nice staff. Park maintenance is currently building a wood fence to keep folks away from steep bluff edge. Views of Lake Michigan fairly limited. If these were improved, this would be a much more popular park. I was very disappointed that their stairs to beach had been eroded near its base so you could no longer access beach but had to drive to one of two local beaches. I stayed one night and unfortunately had to camp next to a group who had a very barky, anxious large dog. Some folks need to leave their poorly trained dogs at home.

    Lake Michigan Recreation Area

    Beautiful and diverse spots!

Awesome beach and/or forest locations for camping! Spots near the parking are but also some spots you can hike to. Beautiful all around. And pet friendly!

Guide to Pentwater

Silver Lake State Park offers sandy dunes for off-roading just minutes from Pentwater, Michigan. The park features both camping areas and day-use sections where visitors can enjoy Lake Michigan's shoreline. Most pet-friendly campgrounds in the Pentwater region provide access to hiking trails and beach areas, with varying regulations about where dogs are permitted during peak summer months.

What to do

Beach access at both lakes: Whispering Surf Campground at Bass Lake gives campers access to both Bass Lake and Lake Michigan within a short distance. "Great beach area for swimming. Internet is excellent," notes John Ryan G. The campground's unique position provides the perfect base for enjoying both bodies of water: "You can paddle through Bass Lake and into the river straight down to the dam at the big lake, where you are met with beautiful dunes and a little swimming hole."

Sand dune adventures: Silver Lake's main attraction is the massive dune system where visitors can take guided tours or bring their own off-road vehicles. "Silver Lake offers sandy dunes for off roading, a beach for swimming and trails. There are many camping sites in which the terrain varies," explains Noah R. The designated ORV area covers hundreds of acres of shifting sand formations.

Downtown exploration: Staying at campgrounds near Pentwater puts you minutes from shopping and dining. "The location is great, too. There is a winery just up the road and a jam shop down the road a bit. Town isn't far away, you can get to downtown or any of the beaches in just a short drive," writes Amanda L. about Kibby Creek Campground. Many campsites are within walking distance of Pentwater's charming downtown.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Dunes Harbor Family Camp consistently receives praise for its maintenance standards. "This is a super clean family friendly campground! It is one of our favorite places to camp and go back every year. The pool is not a large swimming pool but an activity pool with a kids area that is walk in shallow, a whirlpool circle, basketball area and a water slide!" shares Cassondra P. The campground was built in 2015, so facilities remain modern and well-maintained.

Proximity to attractions: Campers appreciate the strategic locations near both lakeshores. "This campground is split and on both sides of the road. One side is up by the water and the other side is more wooded. The campground itself is beautiful and the accommodations were clean and well maintained," notes Danielle R. about Silver Lake State Park Campground.

Spacious sites: Kibby Creek Campground provides larger than average camping spots. "This campground is very clean all the site are spacious," writes Melissa B. Site 26 is even "surrounded by pear trees. The campground is covered in pear and apple trees!"

What you should know

Reservation timing: Dog-friendly campgrounds near Pentwater fill quickly, especially for summer weekends. "It's a little cramped making it a bit overwhelming but the sites are nice and kept," mentions Kris D. about Mears State Park Campground. Plan to book months in advance for prime summer dates between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Site privacy considerations: Mears State Park Campground offers excellent location but limited separation between sites. "Beautiful campground. Clean facilities and closely located to Lake Michigan. Only drawback was how close the sites were to each other," notes Keith B. Sites on the edges of campground loops typically provide more privacy than center locations.

Sand management challenges: Many campgrounds in the area are built on sandy soil. "Awesome location for camping, and is right on Lake Michigan. However, there is no grass and is pretty much all sand. As long as that doesn't bother you, you will have a great time camping here," explains Martin W. Bring mats for tent entrances and plan for sand in everything during windy conditions.

Tips for camping with families

Activity planning: Hill & Hollow Campground & RV Park provides numerous on-site amenities for children. "The campground offers many amenities. Clean facilities. Large campsites. Heated pools. Adjacent to playground, go carts, arcade and putt putt. Only two miles to the beach. It's perfect," reports Gina S. The campground's proximity to town makes supply runs easier with children.

Swimming options: Many pet-friendly campgrounds offer swimming access beyond Lake Michigan. "There is an AJ's fun center there that has mini-golf, go carts and games. The campground has a pool. The bathrooms are the cleanest bathrooms I've seen at a campground," writes Clint about Hill & Hollow Campground. Indoor pools at some facilities provide swimming options when Lake Michigan is too cold or rough.

Playground facilities: Campgrounds often provide multiple playground options for different age groups. "Outdoor pool, AJs (putt-putt golf, arcade, playground, go-karts) extra fee for AJs but reasonable priced, basketball court, volleyball court, small baseball diamond, tennis table, general store," lists Melissa M. regarding the amenities at Hill & Hollow.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling requirements: Poncho's Pond RV Park provides level sites with convenient hookups. "All 257 sites are full hook-up (with cable), level, and have paved patios and for a $2 up charge you can get a paved site. Our site was super long (over 100') and had a nice view of the large pond," shares Nancy W. Many campgrounds in the area require some leveling due to sandy terrain.

Hookup locations: Check site diagrams carefully before booking pet-friendly campgrounds near Pentwater. Some electrical boxes are positioned at the front of sites rather than the standard rear location. Bring extension cords if your RV has connections in non-standard locations, especially for older campgrounds where utilities weren't originally designed for modern RVs.

Access road conditions: Some campgrounds have narrow roads that can challenge larger rigs. "Owners are great. They escorted us in as it was a little tight with our 40 foot 5th wheel," explains John Ryan G. about Whispering Surf Campground. When in doubt, call the campground to confirm your specific RV length can be accommodated on your selected site.
