Brower Park Campground and School Section Lake Veteran's Park offer cabin accommodations with varying amenities near Stanwood. Cabins at Brower Park include electricity, picnic tables, and fire rings, while School Section Lake provides cabins with more developed facilities. Most units feature basic furnishings with beds, tables, and seating areas. "The cabins were clean, updated, and the beds were quite comfortable. Our deluxe cabin bathroom and kitchenette were also stocked with amenities, making the stay comfortable and effortless," noted one visitor about nearby KOA accommodations. Electrical hookups are standard, though heating and cooling systems vary by location and season.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Oxbow Park Campground and Sandy Beach County Park cabins typically provide fire rings and picnic tables for outdoor cooking and dining. On-site camp stores at several locations stock essential items, firewood, and basic groceries. Campers planning extended stays should bring additional supplies from nearby towns. Muskegon KOA

    Love this KOA!

Sadly, we just left the KOA Muskegon campground this morning after a relaxing and peaceful three-day stay. While travelling home, plans are already being made for another camping vacay at this KOA. The staff were all friendly and helpful, creating a family-like atmosphere. The cabins were clean, updated, and the beds were quite comfortable. Our deluxe cabin bathroom and kitchenette were also stocked with amenities, making the stay comfortable and effortless. Outside our temporary home was our own gas grill, patio table with seating, fire ring, and Adirondack chairs. How nice it was for meals on the deck and campfires in the evenings! Every morning we looked forward to the 3/4 mile hiking trail around the lake... which was gorgeous. Although, we personally don't fish, we enjoyed watching other guests fishing from the shore and various docks regularly. There is also a fun area of the campground that includes playground equipment, basketball, volleyball, a jumping pad that looks like a blast, and they were setting up some interesting looking mining activity. We did spend time on their community patio overlooking a fabulous greenspace, fire pit, swim beach, and the lake. I could've spent all day on the patio with the relaxing patio lights, flowering planters, and comfortable Adirondack chairs. The camp store is again clean, updated, and well-stocked, but I was also impressed that the prices were reasonable, which is not always the case in these type of"convenience" situations. Overall, cherished camping memories were made this past weekend, and we are anxious to return in the near future for more! Thank you KOA Muskegon staff!

    Not fancy, but nice

Really nice little campground. Not fancy, but clean and well kept. Pool and petting zoo for the kids. Small store with ice, few necessities and ice cream. Pond in the back on the small river for fishing. Quite a few seasonal campers. Anywhere from rustic to full hook up. Pet friendly. All gravel/dirt/grass sites. Most have trees. Fire pits quite small. Bathrooms very nice and updated.

    Ed H. Henning Park

Nice campground, very convenient for river trips.

We stay here at least once a year and do an annual river trip with a bunch friends. It's a nice campground with a small park, pond, full bathrooms, group sites, and even a couple small cabins. It's great for river trips since we go upstream and can float all the way into camp and no worry about driving. We make a run the next morning for coffee and to pick up the vehicles left at the launch.

School Section Lake Veteran's Park Campground

    Nice campground

Was a decent place to camp- lots are very close though! Luckily in the fall it wasn’t very busy. Nice little lake on property. Fire pits in odd spot near the road. No pets allowed-not even a cat that stays inside in your camper! Also- there is a $7 a day fee for out of the county. Even when you arrive late at night.

    Brower Park Campground

    Large Family Fun Campground

There is something for everyone here. Tent, camper, or RV and fun for all ages with everything from 3 playgrounds, basketball courts, volleyball courts, and tennis courts, to a boat launch, fishing pier, and fish cleaning station. There is also a fairly large swimming area. The showers are actually nice and clean! The restrooms were surprisingly clean and modern as well. Firewood is available in bundles or loose and you stack it yourself. There are numerous picnic areas throughout the campground. There are picnic tables and fire rings at every site and hook up such as electric and water vary. Kids are riding their bikes all over, fishing, playing at playgrounds, the beach, everywhere. Everyone was very friendly. You probably don’t necessarily need a sleeping pad or air mat if you’re in a tent, but they’re always nice. The mosquitos weren’t bad at all! We stayed at site #226. You do need a county park pass, $6/day until 10pm or $25/year.

    Herrick Recreation Area

    Quiet, wooded sites

Nice little county campground, under the canopy of trimmed pine trees. Lots were large, no issues with backing in our 36’ TT with 2 slides (make sure to clean your slides from the pine needles before you go). Fire pits were small And installed in ground, electrical was up to 30amp, and sites were all dirt for most part. They do have sites in front of the park (outside the loops) that is grass but in full sun. It is pet friendly. They have a few spots for fishing, but if you would Luke to swim, you will have to go across the street to the day use (still included with your stay) beach. Only real issues we had (just me) was starting around 9:30-10, the rangers would drive around the loops every 10-15 minutes until midnight (probably longer, but that’s when we turned in) and their lights from the pickup would blind us. In the back end of the park there was 4-5 loops and the loops are the size of a roundabout. So every time the truck would go into any of the loops it would constantly shine in your eyes when you are trying to enjoy the fire.

    Leisuretime Campground

    Terrific view of the lake

This campground appears to occupied by many of the manager's family and friends.  His campsite has a water view.  Our site was right next to the manager.  Noisiest campsite in the park.

The manager was nice and accommodating.  However their site generated a lot of noise well past quiet hours.  Our site was level and had a terrific view of the lake.  After seeing the restrooms and showers we chose to use our trailer only.  Most sites were level and shaded.  Dirt pads.  Water and electric only.  Additional fee for dumping.  Fire wood was reasonably priced.

We did not have internet nor cell service (Verizon/T-Mobile).  Few amenities

    Brower Park Campground

    Beautiful County Park

Brower Park is a quiet campground with three separate areas with sites. They accommodate large RVs as well as smaller trailers and tents. Each site has a fire pit and a picnic table. Electricity and water hookup is included at each site. Our site was near the Muskegon River and was very peaceful. Bathrooms and showers were clean and easily accessible.

    River Country Campground and Livery

    Weekend Getaway

A friend and I stayed two nights in a tent. The campground is on the smaller side. You mostly see campers and RVs, many who stay seasonally. It felt like a community where everyone knows each other well. The couple on the neighboring campsite were incredibly friendly, offering help with fire starters and a hammer to pound down the stakes on our tent.

Our site had a fire pit, picnic table and electric hookup we used to charge cell phones. There wasn’t much shade but there are other shady sites in the campground.

While the river site was scenic, mosquitoes were of course having a feast! There was a play area for the kids, volleyball net and horseshoe pit. The camp store had the basics with hard pack ice cream for sale. There’s also a game room off the camp store with pool, ping pong and laundry room for longer visits.

You’re able to rent a tube, kayak or canoe to cruise down the Muskegon River. They were kind enough to shuttle us to the drop off point a couple of miles away.

There is a restroom/shower building that’s kept quite clean. The ladies room had three separate showers and I never had to wait for a turn during my stay.

It’s definitely a family campground so if you’re looking for a quiet camping trip, this place is perfect. It’s a bit far from the Detroit area for a weekend but I’d definitely return for a longer stay.

Guide to Stanwood

Cabin accommodations near Stanwood, Michigan dot the shores of Hardy Pond and the Muskegon River, offering rental options from spring through fall. The region sits within Michigan's Mecosta County at approximately 1,000 feet elevation, where summer temperatures average 75-85°F with higher humidity levels. Winter rentals are limited as most campgrounds close from late October through mid-April due to Michigan's snowy conditions.

What to do

Water recreation on multiple lakes: Brower Park Campground provides access to Hardy Pond with "a beautiful beach that we saw park staff racking every day to make sure it was clean of seaweed or trash and two boat ramps as well as many places to moor your boat for your stay." Fishing enthusiasts appreciate the "fish cleaning station and lots of access to lots of water," making it "a perfect place to do some fishing."

Hiking and biking trails: The Dragon Trail near Brower Park runs 47 miles around Hardy Pond. "The park is right next to the Dragon Trail, a hiking and mountain biking trail that runs 47 miles round Hardy Pond. There is a short loop called the Brower Park Loop that has some amazing views and is great to hike," notes one visitor. Paris Park connects to an extensive trail system where "the trail stretches from Grand Rapids to Reed City and continues beyond that unpaved. It also links to a long East to west trail in Reed City."

Tubing and kayaking: River-based activities are popular at several cabin rental sites. "The river is great for kayaking, canoeing and tubing. The park offers tubes and transportation as well," writes a visitor to Paris Park. At Brower Park, visitors note the water is "calm" and "perfect place for kayaking."

What campers like

Rustic cabin options: Unlike hotel accommodations, Oxbow Park Campground offers more primitive cabin rentals for those seeking a traditional camping experience. The rustic sites provide more privacy, as one camper noted, "The view is great, but the elbow room is not. I think I would have preferred the rustic sites instead." This contrasts with their more developed sites that are "extremely open together."

Family-friendly amenities: Mecosta Pines Campground offers cabin rentals with excellent amenities for families. "We initially booked a site by the river, but once we saw the sites next to the playground, we knew we had to switch for our sanity and so our toddler could play. They were very accommodating with us and so friendly." The campground also features "a pool and game room as well as a store" and "trails that lead to the river and also to an area where bald eagles have a nest."

Quiet atmosphere: For those seeking peaceful cabin rentals, several options exist. "This campground is a home away from home. It's beautifully situated in the middle of the state. Ample boating, fishing swimming," notes a visitor to Brower Park. Another camper at Mecosta Pines observed, "The campground is overall really quiet during the week. Quite busy on the weekends but they are good about keeping quiet times."

What you should know

No-pet policies at some locations: Unlike many campgrounds, School Section Lake Veteran's Park Campground prohibits all pets. "No dogs allowed so make sure you plan accordingly," warns one camper. Another visitor noted the strict enforcement: "No pets allowed—not even a cat that stays inside in your camper!"

Additional fees: Many cabin rental locations charge beyond the basic site fee. School Section Lake has "a $7 a day fee for out of the county. Even when you arrive late at night." At Brower Park, "You will need to pay either a $7 daily or $30 annual fee for your boat but kayaks and canoes are free."

Seasonal limitations: Most cabin rentals operate from spring through fall. Sandy Beach County Park runs from "May 15 to September 15," while Brower Park extends slightly longer from "April 15 to October 31." Paris Park operates from "April 20 to September 30," making advance planning essential for off-season visits.

Tips for camping with families

Playground proximity: When booking cabin rentals with children, request sites near play areas. At Mecosta Pines, one family noted, "There was so much for our 2 year old and 10 year old to do. We will definitely be back!" Another visitor shared, "Nice little playground for the kiddos," making it easier to supervise children while at your cabin.

Beach areas for children: Sandy Beach County Park provides excellent shallow water access for families. "The kids got to ride their bikes in a safe and friendly environment. All of our neighbors were friendly. It was clearly a popular place for families who liked to play on and near the water," reports one visitor with young children.

Structured activities: Look for cabins at campgrounds offering organized events. Brower Park provides "hayrides and movies on the weekend" according to one visitor, while another mentioned "a craft barn" with "activities for kids to create each day."

Tips from RVers

Site challenges: Cabin renters should note space limitations when bringing additional vehicles. At School Section Lake, "You almost need 2 lots if you have a trailer that's larger than 25 ft. Especially if you have slide outs." Another camper observed, "Lots are very close though! Luckily in the fall it wasn't very busy."

Seasonal rental options: CranHill offers cabin accommodations alongside seasonal activities. "Kids loved the pony rides and we enjoyed trail rides. Boat rentals are available," reports one family. Note that "sites are mostly dirt with pine needles but some are grassy," which affects ground conditions around cabins during different seasons.
