Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Skandia, MI

Rippling Rivers RV Resort and Gitche Gumee RV Park & Campground provide pet-friendly camping accommodations near Skandia, Michigan. Both campgrounds welcome pets with standard leash requirements and waste cleanup policies. Rippling Rivers features full hookup sites for RVs along with tent areas and cabins that permit dogs. Gitche Gumee maintains wooded campsites across from Lake Superior beach access, though visitors note the campground has a quirky western theme with unique character. The hard water at Gitche Gumee can stain shower facilities despite multiple filters. Most campgrounds in the area maintain standard pet policies requiring leashes, proper waste disposal, and limiting barking during quiet hours.

Several hiking trails surrounding the campgrounds accommodate dogs on leashes, with access to Lake Superior shoreline for water-loving pets. Little Lake State Forest Campground offers an alternative camping option with clear lake water, though reviews indicate the campground can become noisy with generators running constantly and occasional loud music from other campers. Sites at Little Lake tend to be spacious, making them suitable for pet exercise. During summer months, temperatures rarely reach the 80s, creating comfortable conditions for outdoor activities with pets. Visitors should prepare for bugs by bringing appropriate repellent for themselves and pet-safe versions for their animals. Marquette, approximately 15 minutes from most campgrounds, provides veterinary services and pet supply stores for emergency needs.

Island Resort and Casino RV Park

Basic RV park with free shuttle to the casino

We were in Site# 14. We had electric/water with a paved pull-through. We travel towing a 14 foot trailer and were able to fit both in our pull through site along with my jeep.
The site was easy to level but the wheels of our motor home were off of the ground.

Check-in is at the hotel. The RV park is not visible from the hotel (it’s back in the woods). There is a phone at the shower house that can be used to request a free shuttle to the casino.

Our site was not shaded with limited trees. This was a smaller lot with our neighbors fairly close.

The lot comes with a picnic table and fire ring.

There was not any WiFi (we used our Starlink). They do not offer Cable TV.

There is not a community outdoor kitchen or community fire pit.

They do not provide garbage service at your site so you must walk to garbage dumpster.

They do have an indoor Swimming pool at the hotel with a sauna and steam shower.

There is not a Playground. There are not any additional play areas like Bocce ball, shuffleboard, basketball sport court, horseshoe, or volleyball courts.

They have a general store in the parking lot of the casino where you can also get gas.

There are restaurants on site in the hotel as well as a spa. The closest big town with stores is Escanaba (about 20 minutes away).

This is solely an RV park. They do not have any cabins to rent or any tent areas.

They have one shower house. The shower house has individual showers (toilets & sinks are on opposite side of shower house).

The laundry facility is located at the BP gas station (located in the parking lot of the casino/hotel). It is a cash only facility, but they have a change machine. It is approximately $2 to wash and $2 to dry a load.

They do not have a fenced in dog park. There are areas to walk dogs.

Bugs did not seem to be an issue.

Some fun things to do outside of the campground are to visit the Sandy Point Lighthouse or Ludington Park in Escanaba.

The casino is smoke-free. It states that the tables are open from 10am to 2am. Not all tables are available though (for instance, roulette wasn’t always available and if they did open up the one roulette table, it wasn’t until 6 or 7pm). The slot machine options are abundant.

    Beautiful destination

Little Bay De Noc, Lake Michigan access with a pier. Only a few campsites, but includes group fire pit, playground and proximity to Pictured Rocks, 1 hour. Lots of hiking and great motorized non-motorized off-road trails.

    Country Village RV Park

    Nice Place to Stay

This park is located about 15 minutes from the town of Marquette and is a great alternative if you can’t get a site in the Marquette Tourist Park (which is closer to town and very popular in the summer). It is located off US-41 which is a major Upper Peninsula thoroughfare but set back about ½ miles so you don’t get road noise but it is still convenient.  The campground is located behind (and within walking distance of) a shopping area that has a meat market, grocery, gas station, movie theater, bowling alley, a few restaurants and a brewery (which has good, inexpensive beer and food). It is also located next to an RV dealer/service center/camp store which is convenient if you need anything. Nearby are some interesting museums including the National Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame and the Michigan Iron Museum.  You are only about 20 minutes from the town of Marquette which is worth a visit.

The park and facilities are well-maintained. The restrooms were super clean as was the pool and all the grounds. The people in the office were super nice in helping us pick a site and with information about the area. The park has over 105 RV sites with varying services and some being held by seasonal people. There are lots of amenities (which we did not use) including swimming pool, hot tub, playground, basketball courts, and more. The pool was super crowded and noisy so if you don’t want to hear kids screaming, stay away from sites close to the pool. The park does not take online reservations so you must call them directly.

We were assigned site #104 but could tell our motorhome was not going to get level in the site so we had to straddle the site and park partly in the adjacent grassy area. Luckily, the ground was dry to we didn’t make any deep ruts. Our site did have a nice shade tree on the patio which was welcomed because of the hot weather. The WiFi never worked at our site. We were able to get a clear view of the sky for our satellite television.

    Van Riper State Park Campground

    Van Riper State Park

We stayed at Van Riper State Park three times during June and July. The park is always clean and well-maintained. The bathrooms and showers and generally always nicely maintained as well, and there are plenty of both. The bathrooms do tend to run out of soap and toilet paper at busy times. Dogs are not allowed on the beach but also cannot be left unattended in your site. The rules are heavily enforced in this park. Park staff will ask you to move vehicles if you have more than two, and you will be asked to turn music completely off upon quiet hours. This is not the place to go if you want to party.

Sites 15 and 17, as well as several other sites along that side of that loop, now have a wooden fence at the back of them, so they are not as large as they appear in the photos online.

We have stayed in sites 14, 90 and 93. We travel with a 34’ trailer.

Site 14 is narrow but manageable. It is well-shaded by large pine trees on the site. Site is entirely dirt. There are trees to hang hammocks or clotheslines in.

Site 90 is on a corner by the propane tanks. It is a large site. It does have some roots and low spots. It is partial grass. It has nice shade and is adjacent to the bathrooms. There are trees to hang hammocks or clotheslines.

Site 93 is a large site that backs up to a small grass/tree buffer. It is across the road from the bathrooms. It has nice shade. There is a place to hang a clothesline but not hammocks.

    Pros: Clean, well-maintained park

    Quiet

    Lots of playground equipment

    Bike/scooter pump track

    Excellent beach area

    Lots of green space

    Hiking trails

Wood and ice available for purchase at the entrance

Laundry is available; one washer and two dryers

    Very kid and pet friendly

Cons: Park website has out of date information, specifically that there is no longer a store on the beach, nor are there kayaks/SUPs to rent

The Water Warrior Island is no longer in the lake

There are very few sites with buffers between

It is sort of far to the beach and laundry from the modern campsites

    No non-reservable sites available

    Country Village RV Park

    A nice in town campground

Our dd was excited that she could see the McDonald’s golden arches from our site! The campground is clean & well maintained. It was easy for us to park our 35 ft trailer because the sites are large & level, but also because there weren’t any trees along the campground roads. Our kids loved that there is a pool, hot tub & bouncy pillow! This is our 2nd time staying & both were because of its convenience to ‘civilization’ not to get away from it. This time we took the opportunity to enjoy the afternoon shopping in Marquette before heading to the eastern UP the next day for a week’s stay there. It is located in town, near a Camping World & just behind some restaurants, shops, a brewpub & a hotel, but the other sides of the campground are surrounded by trees/forest because it is the UP. A great campground if you want to explore the area’s history or natural beauty, shop in Marquette or if you are checking out Northern Michigan University’s campus (about 20 minutes away). Most sites are full hookup, they also have rustic cabins & a dog play area. I’m sure we will stay here again, as it’s a short trip for us, the kids love the amenities & I’d like to explore the area for more than our usual day trips.

    Marquette Tourist Park Campground

    Endless bike trails

Stayed on our drive from Mackinac to see the pictured rocks lake shore. The campground is surrounded by 18 miles of trails. No camp store, but a convenience store is a quarter mile away. Northern Michigan university is at the door step as well. Lake superior is 1 mile away. We biked there and fished at the campground beach. Lots of Brook trout there.

Pictured Rocks RV Park and Campground

    Excellent new campground

Open, level gravel sites and some concrete pads scattered throughout this pretty new campground. A few baby trees in the open meadow are trying to get started, but other than those there is no shade. We stayed in a full hook up 50 amp site, and experienced no power issues despite 2 days of freakishly high winds and scorching heat in the 90s. This is an immaculately clean and well run campground. Wi fi is ok for email and phone scrolling social media. The only reason we didn't give 5 stars is due to construction in the campground with dump trucks and beep beep beep of machinery backing up every day. Once they are finished and the shade trees grow this will be a premier campground in a beautiful area. Pets allowed on leash. Trash receptacles convenient to each area of the campground. Bath house with coin laundry machines.

    Au Train Lake Campground

    Perfect Getaway

We reserved our site online. Having never been before we didnt really know what to expect. It was nothing less than perfect. Tucked away in a silent wooded area. Paved roads all the way in. 15 minutes from Munising. Was a perfect hideaway for us driving from SW michigan over memorial day weekend. Birdwatching trails for days and 4x4 trails surround.

Leg Lake Campsites — Hiawatha National Forest

No Privacy and Lots of Loose Dogs

Not our favorite campground but will do in a pinch, plus the price was very reasonable.

Not too far off of 101, easy paved drive, just a little winding. $8 for camping, and the America the Beautiful and other Interagency passes are honored here and is half off with a pass.

This is a campground of just a row of sites with a driveway down the middle. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon in early August and found a spot, but it was more busy than we expected it to be. Very open and zero privacy at each site. No clear boundary between sites. Fire pits and picnic tables throughout. Campground sits along a creek and is surrounded by trees which is nice. Lots of sun during the day here. Water spigots, dumpsters (no recycling) and pit toilets available.

Bonus…wild blackberries! We picked a bunch right behind our spot.

There is a camp host on site that had firewood for sale and were a bit surprised to see people actually lighting up big campfires when restrictions exist. Recommend the creek side as another road runs along the campground which was quite busy.

Access to creek is entering from outside the campground or though someone else’s spot.

Very weak/ non existent cell service. But weboost helped a lot.

BE AWARE: Loose dogs……literally all over! We only stayed one night because of this alone. Everyone had multiple dogs and at one point there was a wild dog ruckus near the water that went on for a while!

Guide to Skandia

Campgrounds near Skandia, Michigan range from rustic state forest sites to full-service RV resorts, all located within the forested terrain of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Campers should prepare for summer temperatures that typically stay below 80°F with cool evenings in the 50s. The surrounding area features a mix of inland lakes, rivers, and proximity to Lake Superior beaches within a 15-20 minute drive from most sites.

What to do

Hiking at pictured rocks: Camping at Munising Tourist Park Campground provides convenient access to the Pictured Rocks area. "Great private campground! Awesome spot to camp if you're visiting the pictured rocks. There are no campgrounds in the National Park itself, so it's about a 15-20 minute drive to see them," notes Emma W.

Mountain biking access: Rippling Rivers RV Resort connects directly to trail systems. "If you love mountain biking or hiking you stay here. Period. You are right on the trails. If you have little ones the grom trail rims next to the top camp site," explains Rory L., highlighting the family-friendly trail options.

Lake swimming options: At Au Train Lake Campground, the water is noticeably warmer than Lake Superior. "The water is beautiful and warmer than Lake Superior. Watch for afternoon thunderstorms. Peaceful campground," advises Raquel M., who served as a campground host.

Fishing opportunities: Multiple inland lakes and river systems offer diverse fishing experiences. "Great wooded sites. Ours was very secluded, shaded, and had a nice water view as well as great locations and space to put up a couple tents. Lots of people fishing," shares Sara S. about Au Train Lake Campground.

What campers like

Beach access convenience: Bay Furnace Campground offers direct Lake Superior shoreline. "Located in Hiawatha National Forest on Lake Superior. The beach area was fantastic & the water was clean/clear but cold as would be expected, perfect for a refreshing cool off in hot weather!" describes Lisa R.

Spacious wooded sites: Many campers appreciate the natural setting at Marquette Tourist Park. "Overall the sites are good size and offer a decent amount of privacy. We walked around the campground and there are many sites that we would like to try out at a different time," shares Amber.

Quieter camping areas: Less crowded options exist for those seeking tranquility. "Remote and quiet. Landed here after trying unsuccessfully to camp along Lake Superior (everything full). It's a sweet little campground: quiet, dark and removed from the crowds," says Mary H. about Little Lake State Forest Campground.

Amenities beyond basics: Some campgrounds offer unexpected extras. "They even have a brewery in the campground," mentions Erin A. about Gitche Gumee RV Park & Campground, while Rippling Rivers features "a hot tub and pool, putt putt, excellent bar, camp store," according to Craig C.

What you should know

Reservation policies vary: Some campgrounds require advance planning. "A lot of options to choose from based on what rig you have and how you like to camp. They have tent sites that are non-electric, about 100 RV sites with just electric, and another 38 sites that have water and sewer hookups," explains Ari A. about Marquette Tourist Park.

Water quality considerations: Water hardness affects some facilities. "The campground has very hard water, to the point our shower is stained pretty bad even though we had multiple filters and a water softener," notes Noah P. about Gitche Gumee RV Park & Campground.

Weekend noise levels: Some campgrounds become busy during peak times. "Very loud, generators running constantly. 2 groups playing very loud music. One group did karaoke for 6 hours," reports Rebecca H. about Little Lake State Forest Campground on a Saturday visit.

Limited facilities at rustic sites: State forest campgrounds offer basic amenities. "Typical rustic amenities. The sites are decent size there are some pull through sites for RV's. The lake is very nice, clear water," explains Michael M. about Little Lake.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly water access: Shallow entry points make swimming safer at select beaches. "There is a beach and boat launch near. Great campground access to Lake Au Train with a swimming area," notes Shannon about Au Train Lake Campground.

Activity centers at campgrounds: Some locations offer recreation for children. "The kids had a lot of fun, they have a lot of outdoor toys. There were kids everywhere," shares Melissa M. about Superior Times, which also offers "jet skis, boats, and kayaks for rent."

Educational opportunities: Look for campgrounds with nature programs. "The night I was there a ranger came out and did a program on owls right from the beach," mentions Annie C. about Bay Furnace Campground. At Au Train, there's "a great trail near our campsite that had signs and info about the birds in the area (great for young ones especially)," adds Jade G.

Playground access: Consider campgrounds with play areas. Marquette Tourist Park offers "a somewhat dated playground," according to Lee D., while Farquar-Metsa Tourist Park has "basketball court, fishing, Escanaba River, and hiking trails all right at the park," as noted by Pepper C.

Tips from RVers

Site selection guidance: Choose full hookup sites strategically. "We camped in the upper loop which had spacious sites and clean bathrooms but no sewer hook ups. The lower full hook up loop looked a little cramped," advises Scott B. about Rippling Rivers RV Resort.

Utility placement considerations: Layout varies between campgrounds. "Be aware if you are a large RV with tow car that many sites are not long enough so be specific how long you are when you reserve a site. The hook-ups are not laid out conveniently on some sites which requires extra hoses and electric cords," warns Nancy W. about Marquette Tourist Park.

Overflow options for peak season: When primary sites are full, some campgrounds offer alternatives. "Took a chance of finding a spot here in June and there was a cancellation with a waterfront spot for one night. We loved location and moved to overflow for 2 more nights," shares Beth B. about Munising Tourist Park.

Camp store conveniences: Several campgrounds offer on-site supplies. "The camp store has a nice selection of wine and the usual necessary items campers need," says Jan D., while many locations sell firewood on-site, with Bay Furnace offering "firewood available for very good prices sold at campground; for $14 we got enough wood for 4 large, longburning fires," according to Beth H.
