Glamping options around Royal Oak offer a variety of experiences beyond the traditional campground setting. Located in southeastern Michigan where the terrain is mostly flat with small rolling hills, the area experiences warm summers with average highs of 82°F in July and cold winters with temperatures often below freezing. Most glamping facilities near Royal Oak operate seasonally, typically closing from late October through April due to Michigan's harsh winter conditions.
What to do
Waterfront activities: 2.5 miles of trails at Proud Lake Recreation Area circle the waterfront. "This was my first trip, which I did in a teardrop style micro camper. I didn't use all amenities but there was a modern bathroom facility with showers. kayaking, hiking, electric hookup with 50, 30, and 110, and most importantly, while the campground feels like you are remote, if you need supplies, there is a small shopping center about a mile away," reports D K.
Mountain biking: 26 miles of trails at Addison Oaks County Park provide both paved and dirt options. "We stayed in one of the group sites and it was beautiful. Less tree cover than we would have liked, you're basically in a giant grassy field, but it was perfect for a large group," notes Jennifer O. The trails range from beginner-friendly paved paths to more challenging mountain biking routes.
Water recreation: paddleboats and fishing at Groveland Oaks County Park. "Liked having full hook ups. But not many trees. We like the small swimming hole, the beach, the parks and putt putt," explains Tammy K. The park also features a water slide that operates during summer months.
What campers like
Modern bathrooms: recently renovated facilities at most locations near Royal Oak. "The bathhouse is new and very nice. There are a few sites on an incline and that made it hard to get in and out of our fifth wheel. I would visit this campground again," notes Stephanie C. about Proud Lake Recreation Area.
Themed weekend events: Halloween camping offers special activities for families. "Proud lake is very nice, some other campers arnt so happy campers an complain, but other than that a nice place, we've been going to halloween camping for the past 2 years, decorate your site and the kids get dressed up an go trick or treating in camp, theres a costume contest and hay rides, fun family atmosphere," says Justin G.
Group camping options: large pavilions at Camp Dearborn accommodate extended family gatherings. "The sites were very nice, and so were the bathrooms. Lights is fun activities for the kids for halloween. Lots of rules to follow, but the place has a nice atmosphere overall. Very large campgrounds... Quite the walk to the showers if you're staying up on the hill," reports Mary W.
What you should know

Reservation requirements: book 6 months ahead for summer weekends. Sites at popular glamping destinations fill quickly, especially for holiday weekends and special events.
