      Thousand Trails Bear Cave

      Great Campground

This is a nice, family friendly campground. Lots of very friendly other campers, a heated pool, playground for the kids, nice size lots with fire pits, picnic tables, electric& water (including at tent sites). Pool has an ADA lift chair. 2 shower/bath houses, camp store, a real bear cave you can tour in (free), a creek that meanders through it. The resort sits on the St. Joseph river & this park has a boat ramp & dock for fishing. There is a gate that campers need a code to get into so it keeps out unwanted’s. Nice staff. Yolanda is a great manager. Security, a ‘honey wagon’. Laundry center. Quiet hours are 10p-8a. It’s near Buchanan Michigan and the RED BUD Motor Cross track. Very friendly people, always stopping and talking.

      Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday

      Our Favorite

We camp here every year with our family since it is perfectly halfway between us, in Michigan, and my family in Chicago. The kids love the activities and the pool and my family who are not necessarily "outdoorsy" love that they can sleep in an air conditioned cabin with cable! This is an amazing campground!

      Shamrock Park

      Hidden Gem

The ranger was awesome. You can buy firewood and ice on site. There’s WiFi, electricity, showers and bathrooms. The campground is right on the water-perfect for kayaking or fishing. There’s also all sorts of activities for kids-ping pong, basketball, cornhole and more. It’s also a quick walk to a grocery store and restaurants. There’s no grill on the fire pit, so plan accordingly.

      Kal-Haven Outpost

Great place to bike to, spacious cabins, amazing staff

A group of us bike from Kalamazoo to South Haven every year using the Kal-Haven trail. We usually tent camp but tried a cabin here this year. It was the perfect option as the campground is right off the trail. They provide linens and have basic supplies (including firewood that they will deliver to your cabin) right at the general store. We also met a group that had hiked in to the primative sites and were using the trail to train for the Appalachian Trail. Everything is well-made and maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful (they even let us check-in early when we biked in ahead of schedule). Highly recommend for those looking for a place close to the trail and to South Haven. The cabins have three queen beds and a sofa sleeper so they can comfortably hold up to eight people (we had five in our group and I never felt crowded). There's a large table inside and two chairs on the porch. There's also a large picnic table outside, a fire pit, and a grill. They are hoping to expand and add cabins sized for couples in the near future.

      Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

      Amenities include:

      - a community fire pit

      -  game room with television

      - guest laundry

      - dump station

      - gift shop

      - pet friendly options

       -WiFi

      - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

      Very pleasant

Hope, the owner, is always so friendly & helpful. The restrooms/showers are nice and clean. You can get an entire 4 wheeler dump load of wood for $20. It’s nice dry wood. When we’ve camped in the past during April & October, we got free firewood those months. There’s a nice little camp store. We were given a nice welcome packet at check-in with visitor guides for the area. They recycle also. Pool and small miniature golf course. We really enjoy camping here. We’ve camped on several different sites here. We’ve stayed on the deluxe patio sites a couple of times when they were available. They have patio table & chairs on extra wide concrete pad, gas grill, fire pit & seating area in back.

      Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday

      Our first KOA

We weren’t sure what to expect given this was our first visit. But overall it was a good experience. Delivery service of food and firewood was great. Trash pickup was appreciated. WiFi reception was a welcomed surprise. Showers and bathrooms were clean. If you go, be sure to reserve one of the sites with the paved patio, pad and provided grill. Very nice. Most importantly, it was very quiet after 9pm when everything closed.

Downside - sites are a little cramped and the pool was very crowded.

      Pokagon State Park Campground

      Camp 26

      May 1-5, 2026

site 322, 48 degrees and light drizzle at setup. Site is level, but drops down in the mud and grass, pad is barely wide enough to set up table without being on an angle.

Site barely fits 21’ trailer and RAM 1500

      Cellular T-Mobile 5g, 3bars Electric, 20, 30 and 50 amp.

Bathroom is separate from showers, older but decent. A nice grassy area close to site 322 and 324. Shade and sun Fire pit sits in low area, do expect puddles if raining. Firewood was$8, dry, burned well.

Close to bike/walking trail and a few hundred feet from store. Easy check in, Pokagon is a favorite park of ours as it offers miles of hiking trails.

    What to do

Hiking and biking trails: Fort Custer Recreation Area maintains an extensive trail system that includes dedicated paths for different activities. "We hiked on a multi-use trail that the ranger suggested. The blue trail goes around a couple lakes and was wonderful. We did miss a sign or two and ended up turning our 4 mile trip into a 6.5 mile one but there are plenty of spots to rest and enjoy the time," notes one visitor at Fort Custer State Park.

Mountain biking adventures: The recreation area features specialized mountain biking trails separate from hiking paths. A camper at Fort Custer State Park shares, "We camped and rode (again) at Fort Custer. We've been here 2x before (once in a cabin and once in tents) and this has now officially become a favorite."

Lake activities year-round: Visitors can enjoy multiple water bodies for various activities. At Melville 7 Lakes, a camper notes the area provides a "lake for boating and fishing. Has a small swimming area, playground." The multiple lakes allow for different water activities depending on your preference.

    What campers like

Private, spacious sites: Many glamping locations near Portage offer secluded camping experiences. A visitor to Fort Custer State Park mentions, "We've stayed at both sites listed. 161 you do have neighbors pretty close, but we just stayed at 51 and it is extremely secluded! We had an amazing time tent camping it was so quiet!"

Water recreation options: The region features numerous lakes with various amenities. At Camp Michawana, a camper shares: "They have a lake/beach for swimming, kayaks, paddle boards, and canoes to use at the lake. They also have a massive slip 'n slide, zip lining, and a rock climbing wall."

Blueberry picking opportunities: Some glamping sites near Portage offer unique seasonal activities. A visitor to Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday notes, "This KOA has blueberry fields everywhere on the property. For a period of time in summer and early fall, you can pick your own blueberries in the morning to have in your breakfast pancakes!"

    What you should know

Seasonal popularity and reservations: The recreation areas can get busy during peak seasons. "The campground was almost to capacity, but still some open sites," reports a visitor at Fort Custer State Park, indicating the need to plan ahead.

Site variations and accessibility: Different glamping sites offer various levels of amenities and accessibility. At Cranberry Lake Campground, a camper shares: "There were little cabins and trailers for rent but we had our own camper. There were also canoes and things to rent but we did not partake-fairly priced."

Insect preparation: Some locations require proper preparation for insects, particularly in summer months. "Lots need mowing so lots of bugs, bring insect repellent," advises a camper at Fort Custer State Park.

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Many glamping sites near Portage cater specifically to families with children. A visitor to Camp Michawana states, "This campsite is perfect for children! The workers are the nicest people I have encountered at a campsite."

Activity planning: Some locations offer scheduled activities for different age groups. At Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday, a camper shares: "There are a lot of lodging options, tons of kids activities, both free and for a small fee, great pool, cafe and store! Lots of sports equipment to loan as well."

Family campground selection: When traveling with children, consider locations with appropriate facilities. At Covert Park Beach & Campground, one visitor notes: "The campground allows anyone to buy daily passes for the beach so the beach can get crowded. Lots of traffic in and out." Understanding this flow of visitors helps families prepare accordingly.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup considerations: RV glampers should verify specific site amenities before booking. "Sites have electrical service only. Must use the dump station," notes a camper at Fort Custer State Park, highlighting the importance of checking utility connections.

Site positioning: RV placement can affect comfort and accessibility. A visitor to Covert Park Beach & Campground advises: "The map was not true to date and most sites the electrical box and water hook up is on the wrong side of the site. Bring extra line... we have 50ft hose so we were fine there (line goes through the middle of the site) and 25ft electrical and had to re adjust the camper a few times so it would reach."

Level site selection: Some campgrounds have uneven terrain requiring preparation. "Sites are easy to get in and out of with RV/TT," reports a camper at Fort Custer State Park, but other locations may require more careful site selection.
