      Thousand Trails Bear Cave

      Great Campground

This is a nice, family friendly campground. Lots of very friendly other campers, a heated pool, playground for the kids, nice size lots with fire pits, picnic tables, electric& water (including at tent sites). Pool has an ADA lift chair. 2 shower/bath houses, camp store, a real bear cave you can tour in (free), a creek that meanders through it. The resort sits on the St. Joseph river & this park has a boat ramp & dock for fishing. There is a gate that campers need a code to get into so it keeps out unwanted’s. Nice staff. Yolanda is a great manager. Security, a ‘honey wagon’. Laundry center. Quiet hours are 10p-8a. It’s near Buchanan Michigan and the RED BUD Motor Cross track. Very friendly people, always stopping and talking.

      Air conditioning in the bathrooms

Very nice campground with level sites and air conditioned bathrooms! That is amazing in the summer. They have trails that are a nice walk for the dogs and a pond to catch and release fish.

      Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday

      Our Favorite

We camp here every year with our family since it is perfectly halfway between us, in Michigan, and my family in Chicago. The kids love the activities and the pool and my family who are not necessarily "outdoorsy" love that they can sleep in an air conditioned cabin with cable! This is an amazing campground!

      Shamrock Park

      Hidden Gem

The ranger was awesome. You can buy firewood and ice on site. There’s WiFi, electricity, showers and bathrooms. The campground is right on the water-perfect for kayaking or fishing. There’s also all sorts of activities for kids-ping pong, basketball, cornhole and more. It’s also a quick walk to a grocery store and restaurants. There’s no grill on the fire pit, so plan accordingly.

      Kal-Haven Outpost

Great place to bike to, spacious cabins, amazing staff

A group of us bike from Kalamazoo to South Haven every year using the Kal-Haven trail. We usually tent camp but tried a cabin here this year. It was the perfect option as the campground is right off the trail. They provide linens and have basic supplies (including firewood that they will deliver to your cabin) right at the general store. We also met a group that had hiked in to the primative sites and were using the trail to train for the Appalachian Trail. Everything is well-made and maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful (they even let us check-in early when we biked in ahead of schedule). Highly recommend for those looking for a place close to the trail and to South Haven. The cabins have three queen beds and a sofa sleeper so they can comfortably hold up to eight people (we had five in our group and I never felt crowded). There's a large table inside and two chairs on the porch. There's also a large picnic table outside, a fire pit, and a grill. They are hoping to expand and add cabins sized for couples in the near future.

      Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

      Amenities include:

      - a community fire pit

      -  game room with television

      - guest laundry

      - dump station

      - gift shop

      - pet friendly options

       -WiFi

      - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

      Very pleasant

Hope, the owner, is always so friendly & helpful. The restrooms/showers are nice and clean. You can get an entire 4 wheeler dump load of wood for $20. It’s nice dry wood. When we’ve camped in the past during April & October, we got free firewood those months. There’s a nice little camp store. We were given a nice welcome packet at check-in with visitor guides for the area. They recycle also. Pool and small miniature golf course. We really enjoy camping here. We’ve camped on several different sites here. We’ve stayed on the deluxe patio sites a couple of times when they were available. They have patio table & chairs on extra wide concrete pad, gas grill, fire pit & seating area in back.

      Indiana Dunes State Park Campground

      Clean & Spacious

We pulled in around 4:30 in the evening. The sight was spacious with plenty of room in between sites. Since the weather was cooler , it was pretty sparse with other campers. We stayed 2 nights over the weekend. You are within walking distance to the beach within the park. The buildings have great architecture. The sight had 50 amp electric hook ups but no water or sewer connections, and we knew that going in. We had a back in sight #69. There was plenty of space on all sides. We have a 37’ motorhome and pulled a Jeep behind it. There was plenty of room to maneuver around. The sight also had a wood picnic table and fire ring for a wood fire pit. We will definitely be back! I wish I had taken more photos from the beach and beach pavilion.

      Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday

      Our first KOA

We weren’t sure what to expect given this was our first visit. But overall it was a good experience. Delivery service of food and firewood was great. Trash pickup was appreciated. WiFi reception was a welcomed surprise. Showers and bathrooms were clean. If you go, be sure to reserve one of the sites with the paved patio, pad and provided grill. Very nice. Most importantly, it was very quiet after 9pm when everything closed.

Downside - sites are a little cramped and the pool was very crowded.

    Guide to Niles

The Niles, Michigan area features a mix of forest and lakefront camping options within a 20-mile radius. Located near the Michigan-Indiana border at an elevation of around 650 feet, the region experiences warm summers with temperatures averaging 75-85°F and mild humidity compared to other Midwest destinations. Winter camping opportunities remain available at select sites where luxury accommodations provide climate-controlled environments.

    What to Do

Lake activities at Warren Dunes: Warren Dunes State Park offers a 3-mile stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline with swimming areas and hiking trails through sand dunes. "The kids love climbing Mt. Randall, but be warned - it's not for the faint of heart and the sand gets HOT midday," notes camper Heidi S. after visiting Warren Dunes State Park Campground.

River fishing opportunities: The St. Joseph River provides excellent fishing access at several campgrounds. "Beautiful river fishing, nice stream scenery, and a big rec center," reports a visitor at Thousand Trails Bear Cave, which also features "a waterfall right next to the cave" according to Jerry S.

Beach relaxation at Clear Lake: For those seeking calmer waters than Lake Michigan, Clear Lake offers a more sheltered swimming experience. "The lake is beautiful with no waves and the water's a lot warmer than the bigger lakes," shares a visitor at Fullers Resort and Campground, which also features boat rentals and a sandy beach.

    What Campers Like

Private beach sections: Some campgrounds provide secluded waterfront access. "We had no idea we would have our own private site and beach. I wish we could've stayed a month," notes Jamie B. about her experience at Fullers Resort.

Clean facilities: Multiple campers highlight bathroom cleanliness as a standout feature. "The bathroom seemed newer with clean bathrooms (cleaned at least twice a day) and private shower stalls," reports a visitor at Warren Dunes State Park.

Security features: Gated entrances provide peace of mind at several locations. "There is a gate that campers need a code to get into so it keeps out unwanteds," explains Gay G. about Thousand Trails Bear Cave, which also offers "security, a 'honey wagon', and laundry center."

    What You Should Know

No alcohol policy: Warren Dunes State Park strictly prohibits alcohol on the grounds. "If you think the rangers don't enforce that rule, you're wrong. Our neighbors got busted for it when we were there," warns Dave E.

Weekend crowds: Popular locations fill quickly during peak season. "Check in was easy but you might have to wait on a busy day," notes Peter C. about Warren Dunes State Park.

Cell service varies: Coverage can be spotty in wooded areas. "No internet, no cell service," reports Dawn T. about Shamrock Park, though some locations offer paid WiFi options.

Seasonal considerations: Most standard camping options operate from April through October. "The grounds were well kept and clean. Even though it was pretty booked when we were there it didn't feel crowded," shares Sam O. about visiting during peak season.

    Tips for Camping with Families

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature dedicated play areas for children. "There's a large stack of firewood, so it's easy to get a bundle that's good and dry," mentions Brian O. about his family's stay at Shamrock Park, which also offers "a large playground for kids."

Beach day preparations: Pack appropriate gear for lake outings. "Plan on driving your stuff to the beach or taking bicycles," advises Heidi S. about Potato Creek State Park Campground, where "hiking, biking, swimming, fishing" are all available.

Evening activities: Some glamping sites near Niles offer organized events. "Karaoke every Saturday in the barn is fun for everyone," shares a visitor about Fullers Resort, which also provides "hay rides" for younger guests.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup variations: Water and electric access varies between sites. "If you do not get a full hook up, you have to pay $15 to get pumped out," notes Dawn T. about some locations.

Pull-through availability: Many campgrounds offer easy-access sites. "We had a nice big pull through site," shares Stacy E. about Elkhart Campground, which offers full hookups and remains a popular stop for RVers visiting the Elkhart RV manufacturing area.

Leveling requirements: Some sites may need adjustment before setup. "Site needed leveling, had no shade at all and was close to major hwy," reports deb K., highlighting the importance of checking site details before booking.
