Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Scotts, MI

Fort Custer Recreation Area campsites provide spacious, wooded sites with natural divides between each campsite. All sites are pet-friendly with electric hookups available. Pets must be kept on a leash throughout the park, including on the many hiking, biking, and equestrian trails. Cold Brook County Park offers 29 campsites with water and electric hookups where pets are welcome. The staff cleans showers and bathrooms multiple times daily, maintaining excellent facilities for campers with animals. Markin Glen County Park, En Gedi River Resort, and the Kalamazoo County Expo Center also accommodate pets at their campgrounds. Pets are permitted in tent sites, RV spaces, and some cabin accommodations throughout the region. The sites have good space and isolation from other campers, perfect for those traveling with animals.

The extensive trail network at Fort Custer Recreation Area provides excellent opportunities for dog walking with miles of hiking paths through wooded areas. Three lakes offer fishing and paddling options, with a swimming beach where many campers bring their dogs to the water's edge. Nearby Kalamazoo and Portage parks provide additional options for exercising pets, though city parks may have different pet regulations than campgrounds. Campers should prepare for insects, particularly mosquitoes and black flies in wooded and swampy areas when camping with pets. During summer months, the small beach at Fort Custer can become crowded on weekends, so weekday visits may be preferable for those with dogs seeking water access. Wildlife is active in these natural settings, with raccoons frequently spotted at campgrounds, so securing pet food is essential.

    Elkhart Campground

    3 1/2 star campground

It is a very large older CG with a few upgrades. Clean, with decent amenities. We were placed in the rear section, which was just ok. Site needed leveling, had no shade at all and was close to major hwy. The front and side sites seemed nicer and had ample shade with some concrete sites. Laundry room, pool and bathrooms were very clean. Large dog park, but was far from our site. Was only 25 min from Notre Dame and about an hour from lake Michigan WiFi was great, no cable, but good antenna reception

    Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday

    Nice campground

I stayed at this place when it was B&B and it is now a KOA. Several new sites were added and the park appears to be much cleaner. The restrooms are nice and the camp personnel are friendly. There is a dog park for walking the dog but with so much driveway I just walk the dog around the park. They have several dog bag stations around the park to make clean up easy. There are 3 playgrounds and boat area on the lake. I believe you can rent boats to fish even though I never have. I will definitely stay here again.

    Kal-Haven Outpost

    Good location and friendly staff

Clean and nice little park with a cool "trading post" with nice merchandise, snacks and food. They have a dog park and trails on the property with a longer bike trail that runs alongside the campground. They had a band one night and an ice cream truck come through the next. Would recommend!

    Elkhart RV Resort by Rjourney

    Great campground!

Great campground in the heart of Amish country. Near Elkhart and the RV/MH Hall of Fame & Museum. Great place to visit, really interesting. Also, near Shipshewana. Campground has lots of activities: pool, miniature golf, volley ball, fishing pond, big chess set, bike rental, mining area, playground, and rec. hall w/ video games, pool, ping pong, air hockey, and juke box. Nice little store. Dog park. Clean restrooms. Friendly owner and employees. Lots of mature shed trees.

They have themed weekends filled with activities for both adults and children and have a pool, pizza and ice cream, jumping pillow, clubhouse, fishing, playground, dog park, and so much more!

Fort Custer Recreation Area sits on 3,000 acres of natural terrain with elevations ranging from 850 to 950 feet above sea level. The recreation area contains three lakes—Eagle, Jackson, and Whitford—totaling 395 acres of water surface. Most campgrounds in this region maintain operating seasons from April through October, with weather typically mild but mosquitoes common in summer months.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Fort Custer Recreation Area, lakes offer multiple fish species. "Endless hiking trails and two lakes where you can fish, swim, and boat," notes Bob B., who adds, "If you're in the area, this is highly recommended."

Hiking trails: The trail network at Yankee Springs Recreation Area connects with the North Country Trail. "You are just a short drive away from Yankee Springs and Gun Lake with the huge beach, plus you are basically right on the NCT and have access to miles of hiking and biking trails," explains Mary Z.

Disc golf course: Cold Brook County Park maintains a full course. "Small county park. Lots of lake for small boating, kayaking. Fishing pier to fish off. Playground for the kids. Swimming beach with sand. Nice country setting yet close enough to towns if you need anything," according to Nellie.

Water recreation: Boating options range from kayaks to small motorboats at many area lakes. "MMichigan State park with large sites and lots of privacy. $25per night with electric. Several no wake lakes for kayaking, canoeing and fishing. One lake with swimming beach," shares Janet N. about Fort Custer.

What campers like

Site privacy: Markin Glen County Park offers well-spaced sites. "The site are large level concrete pads with grass dividing the sites. All full hookups. The park has a lovely series of paved walking paths and a lake for swimming," explains emily P.

Access to urban amenities: Many campgrounds sit within 15 minutes of Kalamazoo. "The park was very clean and well-kept. Bathrooms with showers were cleaned daily. At $28/night for a full hook-up paved site this is a great park if you want to stay in the Kalamazoo area," explains Nancy W. about Markin Glen.

Night sky viewing: Fort Custer limits artificial lighting. "I loved the lack of lights in the park at night making for a beautiful night sky," says Janet N., highlighting a feature many campers appreciate.

Spacious sites: Most campgrounds offer generous spacing between sites. "We found a campsite that was large with vegetation separating us from neighbors. I didn't expect to find something this interesting as an alternate to original plans but it worked out nicely," Art S. mentions about Fort Custer.

What you should know

Seasonal insect activity: Black flies and mosquitoes peak in summer. "Lots need mowing so lots of bugs, bring insect repellent," advises Cathy Y. about Fort Custer Recreation Area.
