October Mountain State Forest offers glamping in Massachusetts with three tiers of camping areas separated by elevation. The lower level contains RV sites, the middle has tent sites, and the upper level features yurts available from May through October. Campsites vary from grassy meadows near the entrance to wooded areas further uphill. The region sits at the base of October Mountain with several state parks within a 45-minute drive.
What to do
Hiking trails: At October Mountain State Forest Campground, trails start directly from the campground area. "Beautiful area to hike. Quiet off the beaten path. There are 3 yurts available May-October. There are several tent sits available. Dogs are welcomed here! Every site has a fire pit and a picnic table," notes Cheryl B.
Swimming opportunities: Woodford State Park Campground offers a small reservoir with swimming areas. "The reservoir is beautiful- plenty of space to spread out for paddling and swimming. We had no issues with noise from other campers," says Melissa S. The park maintains separate swimming areas including a dog-friendly section.
Water activities: Zoar Outdoor provides water adventures near their camping facilities. "The campground is connected to an adventure/outing company that provides white water rafting, tubing and other water activities on a nearby river. It's close to where locals jump off outcrops into the lazy river and hang out on the river side," according to Seth K.
What campers like
Accessible natural features: Many campers appreciate the proximity to natural attractions. At Taconic State Park, "There are plenty of hiking trails nearby and of course, trails to Bash Bish Falls which is beautiful. It was low the first time we visited and we were able to make it to the top of the falls to go swimming and the views were incredible," shares Jackie G.
Wildlife viewing: Glamping close to Pittsfield, Massachusetts often includes wildlife encounters. At Piebald Mountain, campers report, "We were greeted by some turkey and visited by some deer. Comfy and cozy setting," according to Tarah Z.
Clean facilities: Savoy Mountain State Forest Campground maintains well-kept amenities. "My pup and I spent two nights here and were very happy. While this campground is bare-bones (no pool) it is perfect for anyone who wants to just chill and do nothing or hit the mountains / local area and do some hiking. The entire campground was very clean, as were the bathrooms," notes Dawn S.
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: Most glamping sites in the Berkshires operate from mid-May through mid-October. "We were here on Wednesday and Thursday during the summer and the campground was pretty quiet after 9PM. The rangers are super friendly and the bathrooms are clean," explains Sandra G. about her stay at October Mountain.
Site selection impacts experience: At October Mountain, "what site you get makes all the difference. There are Many, I would say most, Sites that you feel very exposed and out in the open. Just plopped next to someone on the grass. Look for the sites that go off to the side (not on the loops) like 39-40," advises Desiree M.
Noise factors: Some campgrounds have environmental noise to consider. "A clean and for the most part quiet camp spot. However it is near an electrical plant that has a hum all day & night—makes for great white noise when sleeping," notes Tiff H. about October Mountain State Forest.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly activities: Peppermint Park Camping Resort offers organized activities for families. "It's family and dog friendly, has a pool, hot tub, newer playground with a sandbox, camp store with large lodge attached, horseshoe, volleyball and other outdoor game areas. There were several activities planned for father's day weekend including a BBQ food truck, BINGO, corn hole, horseshoes, and kids crafts," describes Rae-Ann W.
Family-centered amenities: Woodford State Park Campground caters to families with children. "Perfect for families! there are tons of different types of campsites with either tent spots, lean tos, and a few (hard to get) cabins. Bathrooms are plentiful and clean, hot showers for a small price. Beautiful clean swimmable lake with a walking trail around it," according to Sambath T.
Entertainment options: The Northampton/Springfield KOA provides organized children's activities. "We love this KOA! There are plenty activities for everybody. They have a fire truck ride that brings you around the campsite and hay-less rides. There is a pool there is a playground there are games of all ages," shares Jason A.
Tips from RVers
Site access considerations: At Spacious Skies Woodland Hills, some sites present challenges. "Although sites are squeezed in, it is a nice family campground. However the site I had was steep grade from steps to picnic table. Flat ground area for camper was very narrow. Tricky footing for older folks like my wife and I," cautions Ray P.
Bathroom availability: RV campers should note bathroom facilities vary widely. "There are 2 dog friendly loops at the back. Overall, very quiet and friendly. 2 lifeguarded swimming areas — a kiddie pool and a deep area with floating dock to jump off of," shares Erin B. about Taconic State Park.
Seasonal camper presence: Many campgrounds have permanent seasonal residents. At Spacious Skies Woodland Hills, "This area has a large seasonal population but they are super friendly and it was a pleasure to see the kids (and adults) fishing, paddling on the lake, swimming in the designated area and sitting/playing on the nice beach," reports Kat.
