    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Wompatuck State Park Campground offers spacious, pet-friendly sites with electric hookups and fire rings in a wooded setting near Hingham. The campground features well-maintained trails ideal for dog walking throughout its extensive grounds. Sites are reasonably priced at $17 for Massachusetts residents, though significantly higher at $60 for out-of-state visitors. Many campsites are set back from neighbors with decent privacy, particularly along M Road where sites are spaced approximately 50 feet apart. The campground prohibits alcohol and outside firewood. Some campers report finding certain sites have more poison ivy than others, making site selection important when traveling with pets. Multiple reviews note the bathhouses are generally clean and well-maintained.

The park's extensive network of both paved and natural trails provides excellent dog walking opportunities throughout the property. Many pet owners appreciate the tall trees providing ample shade during summer months, making midday outings more comfortable for dogs. The Aaron River Reservoir area offers a scenic 6-mile round trip walking route suitable for leashed dogs. While no designated dog swimming areas exist within the park, nearby Bathing Beach in Hingham and Nantasket Beach provide options for water-loving dogs, depending on seasonal pet restrictions. The park remains operational from mid-May through mid-October, with most visitors noting weekdays tend to be quieter for those seeking a more peaceful experience with pets. Wildlife occasionally passes through campsites, so keeping dogs properly secured is essential for both pet and wildlife safety.

Boston Harbor Islands State Park Campground

Ranger Review: Banner & Oak Traveler Shirt at Boston Harbor Islands

Campground review: Camping at Boston Harbor Islands requires some planning, but you get the benefit of a remote island with minimal company. Unless you book one of the 12 yurts on Peddocks island, the camping is rustic; you’ll need to bring everything, including water. Reservations open 6 months in advance and sites fill quickly, so plan ahead if you’re counting on a particulate day. I only visited the campsites on Peddocks Island, so I can’t speak to the ones on Lovell, Grape, and Bumpkin.

Getting there: Unless you have your own boat(check regulations on the website; you’ll need to anchor offshore overnight), you’ll want to catch a ride on the ferries to the Boston Harbor Islands. Figuring out the schedule is the trickiest part, not least because they don’t make the inter-island ferry schedule as readily accessible. Here’s the scoop:

      1. Check the ferry schedule. Figure out which departure makes the most sense for you. You may choose to leave from Long Wharf, near the Aquarium T stop on the Blue line, or from Hingham, with overnight parking available. For Bumpkin and Grape Islands, you’ll want to leave from Hingham; Peddocks and Lovells are available from either departure point
      2. Buy your ticket online in advance. Some town libraries have passes offering 2-for-1 ferry rides, so if you’re a MA resident in the greater Boston area, it’s worth checking that out first. Otherwise, you’ll be looking at an extra$20 for the ferry, but that fee covers your round trip as well as the use of the interisland ferries so you can explore other islands. If you’re traveling as a family, look at the family pack for another discount. You can show the ticket on your phone when you board.
      3. Pack as lightly as possible and plan to carry or wheel it to your site. If you have a folding wagon, you may appreciate having it to carry items on and off the ferry and to your site on the island. There may or may not be carts available on the island. Peddocks has running water available, but otherwise you’ll need to bring gallon of water/person. If you want to grill, bring your own charcoal; otherwise bring a stove or bring food that doesn’t need to be cooked. You may scavenge wood to build fires below the high tide line only. No alcohol and no pets.

The yurts on Peddocks are great, providing shelter from the elements, bunks with mattresses, electricity, a ceiling fan, table with benches, and a grill. There are 6 yurts up a small hill, with a composting toilet and water from a tap nearby. The 6 tent sites are also in this area. An additional 6 yurt sites are below the hill and in the woods, so it’s a slightly longer walk to the toilet. at the top of another hill there is an open, grassy area, also with a composting toilet, that provides group campsited.

While you’re out on the islands, take time to explore one of the others…look for sea glass on Spectacle Island and climb the hill for a view of the Boston skyline, explore the old forts and visitors centers, earn a Junior Ranger badge from the National Park Service, fly a kite, or go for a swim or kayak. In mid-August we collected handfuls of blackberries as we explored Peddocks.

Ranger Product Review: Banner& Oak Traveler Shirt

As a Ranger with the Dyrt, I sometimes get to test items; in this case I ordered the Banner& Oak Traveler long-sleeve t-shirt  in indigo. It’s long sleeved and super soft, but the first time I went to put it on, I realized the Banner& Oak tag along the hemline was sewn through both the front and back, so I couldn’t put t on until I removed the tag. I didn’t have scissors with me, so it was tough to get it off and ultimately I ended up with a hole in both the front and back. I’ve worn this on strolls through the woods when the weather was nice, but cool and on the foggy morning ferry ride to the island. The sleeves are not constricting and when I pushed them up to my elbows, they stayed in place while I hiked. I will say that it is a unisex t-shirt and the sleeves and body of the shirt tend to run long. I like that, but if you're petite, it may be annoying.

      Wakeda Campground, LLC

      Beautiful forest

We stayed At Wakeda Campground overnight during a trip from Maine back to Long Island, NY. It was located very close off of 95 and allows pets. We were overwhelmed by the beautiful massive forest. The campground was splendid with old tall, pine trees everywhere. They offered electric, water, and sewer hook up, trading post that had camping goods and snacks, WiFi hotspot, pool table, and lounging area. They also had a game room, miniature golf, coffee shop and dog park.

The first campsite they assigned to us was very secluded but unfortunately, we were coming in during a major rainstorm. That site was a little flooded so we chose another. It still had beautiful trees surrounding it but not as secluded from neighbors. There are also many seasonal campers there but all of their sites were beautifully decorated with flowers and such. Everyone was friendly that we encountered during our stay.

We had bathrooms located near our site. They were four separate bathrooms that had a sink and toilet and were clean. They did offer showers in another area but I did not use them.

Walking around we saw wild turkeys, bunnies, and a hummingbird. It would have been great if they offered a nature trail in the campground since the forest was so beautiful. There were paths that went into the woods but they were marked for employees only.

The next day we wanted to go for a hike before we hit the road. Unfortunately, the state parks near the campsite do not allow dogs during late Spring to early Fall. Using our Bring Fido App, we found Rails to Trails nearby that we could bring our dog and hiking cat. We did the Salisbury Point Ghost Trail that was nice and shady, though flat, but a nice leisurely walk for all of us.

      Pinewood Lodge Campground

Nice woodsy campsite with lots of amenities

We visited in early June and really appreciated the shade at our site as the temps rose into the mid-80’s. There are lots of tall pine trees but are trimmed back and not a problem getting or big-rig through the park or in our site. We loved site 47 which was long and level with nice grass around it. The next site (46) was pretty close, but luckily nobody was in it while we visited. Our patio area was fairly large with no other sites next to it, just a road. We chose a 50A/water pull thru site and the electric was good at 124 volts on each leg. Honey wagon service is quite expensive at $35/pump out, or you can use the dump station for free. We used the campground cable tv and got about 60 stations, included the major stations (local news was out of Boston). This was a good thing since the trees blocked our Dish receiver from getting any channels. The wifi was 2.4G and just o.k. You could surf the internet but definitely not strong enough to stream.  I went to the lodge and got great wifi speed to download movies quickly.

The campground is gated and charges$15/day for visitors. There are lots of amenities. There is a good access to a small lake (with a canoe/kayak launch and rentals), fishing pier (for catch and release, no license required), ice cream stand, food truck, playground, a large dog park (with two runs), laundry, playground, horseshoes, etc. The campground is conveniently to the downtown Plymouth attractions (10 minutes) and a grocery store (2 miles).

The biggest downside was the dust since most of the roads are gravel. It was very dry during our visit and the dust was crazy. Another negative was the $5/day pet fee. There are restrictions as to where you can walk your pets in the campground and they are not allowed on the beach.  There is a good size dog park with two runs.  If you dog is afraid of gunshots, do not come here as there is a gun range nearby that is pretty loud.

      Beach Rose RV Park

Nice small campground near the beach!

Beach Rose RV Park in Salisbury, Massachusetts is a small, friendly, family-owned campground near the beach. The staff was very accommodating and went out of their way to find us a spot on a busy holiday weekend due to a campground mishap. The park is very clean and they have a nice swimming pool and amenities. The dog park area was large and shady, but a lot of mosquitos. You are pretty close to your neighbors, but the sites do accommodate bigger rigs because of the length. The sites are 30/50 amp FHU and wifi was decent. The best thing about Beach Rose RV Park is the proximity to the beach and town. Who doesn’t love a day at the beach? 💗😬👍🏻

      Newport RV Park

Clean sites and easy hiking trails

The campground is close to relatively easy hiking trails and Portsmouth Dog Park. Clean site areas, but many are on a slight slop so leveling blocks are needed. We Took one of the nearby Trails get to the Portsmouth Publick House restaurant, which is dog friendly, for lunch. The waterfall along the blue trail is picture worthy.

      Friendly, with a great location

I came here last year with my dog.  We only stayed two nights.  It was his first time camping, so I made a note in my reservation request that I'd like a fairly remote site - just in case he got loud.  They put me in the perfect site, near the dog park (they have a dog park!).  When the forecast changed to thunderstorms, they let me switch my dates without any hassle.  The location is convenient for Newburyport, Portsmouth, and the Seacoast.   We ended up having a lovely stay.

Just a note, I took my dog for a walk around the campground and noticed that many of the other sites were rather close together - including the cabins.  Some people don't mind, and even enjoy, close neighbors.  If you're like me, however, you'll want to ask for a more remote site.

One more thing to note; I booked through Rover Pass and ended up paying them a fee.  Next time I'll contact the park directly.

I'm looking forward to another trip soon!

    Guide to Hingham

Wompatuck State Park offers approximately 12 miles of paved trails and 40 miles of natural trails across 3,500 acres of forested terrain. Located in a glaciated landscape, the park's distinct features include the Aaron River Reservoir and terrain that ranges from 75 to 175 feet above sea level. Winter camping isn't available, as the campground closes from mid-October through mid-May due to New England's freezing temperatures.

    What to do

Mountain biking on dedicated trails: The park features multiple trail systems with varying difficulty levels suitable for biking enthusiasts. "God access to some beginner flowy mountain bike trails," notes one visitor at Wompatuck State Park Campground.

Explore historic military bunkers: At Boston Harbor Islands State Park, visitors can discover remnants of coastal fortifications. "The island is beautiful and has an old fort to explore as well as a lot of Rocky shoreline and trails. You can build bon fires and see gorgeous sunsets," explains a camper who stayed in one of the yurts.

Fishing in stocked ponds: Many of the dog friendly campgrounds near Hingham feature fishing opportunities. At Pinewood Lodge Campground, one visitor mentions: "Nice and quiet, here for a 3 night stay... There was great views from our site of the pond. On the site there was also a path down to a little dock on the pond that you could sit and relax on."

Winter Island beachcombing: The shoreline offers opportunities to explore tide pools and collect interesting rocks. "The beach was beautiful and enjoyed walking on the larger rocks. Also there's a beautiful lighthouse and some history plaques there," reports a visitor to Winter Island Park.

    What campers like

Proximity to Boston attractions: At just 35 miles from downtown Boston, these campgrounds provide access to city attractions while offering natural surroundings. A reviewer at Winter Island Park notes: "We spent a weekend here on a tent site close to the beach... We ordered pizza from Door Dash on our first night here, and that was a very easy experience as well."

Pond access for kayaking: Many campgrounds near Hingham feature water access. "This campsite is a lot of fun... We found a large pond and an underground bunker to venture into," writes a visitor to Ponkapoag Camp, highlighting the unique combination of water activities and exploration opportunities.

Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention well-maintained restrooms and showers at pet-friendly accommodations. One visitor to Harold Parker State Forest notes: "Awesome park. It was a quiet night and bathrooms where clean. Has spacious showers. Park rangers drive around campground often."

Private sites with natural settings: Sites with adequate separation from neighbors are particularly valued. A visitor to Boston/Cape Cod KOA comments: "Nice little KOA typical, great for kids kinda close to Boston area."

    What you should know

Seasonal operations: Most campgrounds in the Hingham area operate from May through October due to New England weather patterns. At Harold Parker State Forest, a visitor points out: "The location is pretty good. Salem, Andover, Boston Are accesible while staying here."

Alcohol restrictions: Massachusetts state parks prohibit alcohol consumption. "Only complaint about Massachusetts state parks is no alcohol even while sitting in your site," notes one camper at Harold Parker State Forest.

Non-resident fee differences: Many Massachusetts state parks charge significantly more for out-of-state visitors. At Normandy Farms Campground, one visitor cautions: "The campground charges $20/per night, per person, OVER the two people rate. It is loud, crowded, with golf carts and kids running around."

Wildlife encounters: Several campgrounds report regular wildlife sightings. One Winter Island Park visitor mentions: "The cons were the noise during the day from the beachgoers, and the visits from racoons and skunks at night (scavenging the food left by the beachgoers)."

    Tips for camping with families

Activity planning for kids: Some campgrounds offer structured programming for children. At Normandy Farms Campground, a returning visitor shares: "Now bringing my children, my 6 year old says it's his favorite campground. Lots of things for the kids."

Quieter weekday visits: For families seeking less crowded experiences, weekdays offer more tranquility. "We went to this campground every summer as a kid 25 years ago with my family. This was my first summer back and I was so happy to return!" notes a visitor to Canoe River Campground.

Beach access options: Several campgrounds offer water access points suitable for children. "The kids had a great time by the sea and the playground. Their are wildlife like skunks, racoons do put food in car," advises a Winter Island Park camper.

Yurt accommodations: For families wanting comfort without tenting, several campgrounds offer alternative lodging. "The yurts on Peddocks are great, providing shelter from the elements, bunks with mattresses, electricity, a ceiling fan, table with benches, and a grill," explains a Boston Harbor Islands visitor.

    Tips from RVers

Full hookup availability: Several campgrounds offer complete RV hookups. At Boston/Cape Cod KOA, one RVer warns: "I have belong to KOA's for quite a few years and I have learned that you really need to upgrade to the better campsites to enjoy your stay... I booked a basic 30 amp fullhook up campsite and it was so tight that unfortunately I did not enjoy it."

Site selection importance: RVers emphasize the importance of choosing specific sites for optimal experience. "Sites are more secluded than other camp grounds but can be a bit small. Bathrooms are nice and dumpsters available for trash," notes a Wompatuck visitor.

Premium site benefits: Paying for upgraded sites often provides more space and privacy. "We chose a paved full hook-up pull thru with paved patio... Our site was easy to navigate in and out of and was definitely big-rig-friendly with ample space for our motorhome and tow car," describes a visitor to Normandy Farms.

Tight navigation: Some campgrounds present challenges for larger vehicles. At Ponkapoag Camp, a visitor emphasizes: "This is a no frills campground, though there is a playground and beach. It's less than 2 miles from Salem and on the trolley line."
