      Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park

      Going down

Pennyrile Forest State Park off Ky69 outside Dawson Springs, Ky. A newer trail Pennyrile Nature Trail is 13.5 mile long hiking trail, from Dawson Springs to the park. There is also a site for the Pennyrile Trail which is a 75 mile driving loop connecting several Kentucky parks.

The park is multi-leveled with the views and some cool rock formations. The beach has some confusing parking signs, but we figured it off. It was busy and had some loud visitors with loud vehicles and loud vehicles. Not surprising considering the neighborhood it is located in.

The campground has some interesting sites all along the roadway. The campground and horse campground are connected. Several of the sites can be challenging due to not being level or being shallow, but they are workable.

I'm not sure if biking would be great due to the hills but it would be challenging. Hiking and backpacking definitely and of course swimming and horseback riding( on your own horse)

      Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park

Campground with a Lot of Activities but Doesn't Feel like a Gated Community

Pennyrile Forest State Park was a pleasant surprise, especially compared to the many state parks I visited in my earlier years in North Carolina. However, when you reserve your site make sure you ask about the specific site’s terrain. Site 48, where I was, was sloped with no grass and had just been repaired. There were a lot of grassy sites, and they were much better. When I talked to the campground host, he was very pleasant and explained that you do not have to have a horse to camp in the equestrian sites. Those sites are level pull-through sites. There is a camp store, although it is small and limited, but they do sell firewood. Not only does this state park have a putt putt course, but it also has an 18-hole golf course complete with pro shop. The thing I enjoyed best about his state park is the waterfront. There is a large sandy beach and a place to rent canoes, kayaks, and paddle boats. Also at the beach are picnic tables, grills, a playground, and concessions. From the beach area, you can hike the lake trail, but it is moderate. There is a good view of the lake from the trail, and if you walk to the left before crossing the wooden bridge, you can see a very small waterfall. Even though you have to drive a little from the campground to get to it, there is a swimming pool and a lodge. Other activities include tennis courts and basketball. Staying at the campground, other than the sloping site, was a pleasant experience. It was not crowded and the bathrooms have hot showers, but I would suggest paying the extra$15.00 to get one of the equestrian sites.

      Wranglers Campground

      Awesome Campground

Was greeted by friendly staff, splurged on a cabin and it was clean and comfortable. We didn’t have any neighbors and were located close to the showers and some horse stables (but far enough away from them so as to not smell horses the whole time lol). Great stay and would definitely recommend checking out this spot

      High Knob Campgrounds

      Lots of trails

deffinitly caters to equestrians, my only complaint is the shower houses. The potty area is clean but showers are usually kinda gross. Love the sites most have a little shade and the stallsa are nice and safe. The trails are great maps available some trails need marked a bit better.

      Wranglers Campground

      Unique spot

Fun experience staying with all the horses! I didn’t really know it was a thing to bring horses to camp and ride them on the trails! Loved it. Spots are pretty close together but fine for big rigs. Drawbacks: Sites 49-51 are mislabeled online. Booked a pullthru spot on 49 but it wasn’t. Campground was pretty full and we weren’t offered a lot to correct that the website was wrong. I could pay more for a different site... ended up taking “49” back in with ample space. Horses neigh, lots of barking dogs and some rowdy late night campers. If you are looking for a quiet getaway reconsider. We enjoyed being in it all and near the horses.

      Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park

      Beautiful and Spacious

First of all, the drive to Dawson Springs is GORGEOUS. Rolling hills, farmland, trees, really gets you in the mood! Upon arrival, the camp store worker was very friendly, gave us a campground map and hiking map and answered all of our questions. We stayed in the regular campground but they also have a campground for people with horses/horse trailers, as the park has horse trails to go on as well! We didn’t swim in the lake, but it did look beautiful and looked to be a nice place to swim and kayak and paddle boat (which they have for rental as well). The hiking trails are gorgeous and vary in length and intensity. The spot that we were at had plenty of room to spread out and relax. One side had the picnic table and fire pit, and the other side was a grassy area with trees where we hung our hammock. It was stunning! We will definitely be back!

      High Knob Campgrounds

      The way to travel

High Knob is a Horse campground in Shawnee National Forest near Garden of the Gods off Il1. The entire area has extensive trails through some awesome, hilly, rocky, cliffy areas. There are some excellent things to see. The trail traverses some of the River to River trail that meanders through the area. There used to be an annual ride through “One Horse Gap” I don’t know if it’s still a thing.

The campground has options in addition to sleeping in your rig, cabins, travel trailers and a “hotel” . There’s also stalls and tie outs in the area you park in. A good staging area for Shawnee NF treks with several trailheads to pick from. Groups can set up in here and either stage or use it as base camp. Quiet , depending on who you are camping with, all amenities available on site too. (showers, laundry, store)

We enjoyed the trails though we went no where near as far as the horse people do. (There is so much to see, we have been going to Shawnee NF for over 20 years but I still find something or somewhere new almost every visit.)

      Premier Glamping!!

Canal campground is right on the canal that connects Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake at the north end of Land Between the Lakes. Sitting on the north side of the Canal, just outside of Grand Rivers, KY, where the famous Patti's Settlement boasts a two inch thick pork chop and home cooked everything. Canal campground books fast, and offers a substantial number of activities for all ages. Very well upkept and constantly making improvements, this is a favorites campground for folks from miles around.

    Guide to Smithland

Equestrian camping near Smithland, Kentucky offers a mix of shaded woodland and lakeside sites throughout the Land Between the Lakes region. Most campgrounds operate from spring through fall, though seasonal availability varies widely by facility. Summer temperatures often exceed 90°F, with winter lows in the 20-30°F range, influencing water accessibility and trail conditions.

    What to do

Fishing access points: Canal Campground on Lake Barkley provides multiple spots for anglers. "The campground was clean. The bath house was clean, as well. There were a lot of golf carts making the loop for some reason. Maybe 10/hour until about 8 pm," notes Cherri H. about Canal Campground- Lake Barkley COE.

Hiking trail connections: Ferne Clyffe State Park offers direct trail access from campsites. "Great covered spots, trails to and from the campground all across the park, great personnel, accessibility throughout the park, scenic locations within a mile walk from the campground (Ferne Clyffe Waterfall)," according to Hannah S. at Deer Ridge Campground.

Lakefront recreation: Prizer Point KOA provides boat rentals and water activities. "Most sites have great views of Lake Barkley! Large camp store with a restaurant that serves sandwiches, pizza, beer and sodas... Golf cart rentals and the marina has boat rentals," reports Brad S. at Kentucky Lakes Prizer Point KOA.

    What campers like

Secluded waterfront options: Cravens Bay campground provides direct water access. "Great spot for kayaking and tent camping. We were the only ones there so it was perfect! Highly recommend for tent camping," shares Benjamin C. about Cravens Bay - LBL Lake Access.

Proximity to trails: Camp Cadiz connects directly to the River to River Trail. "This camp ground is only about 10 min from Garden Of The Gods. It's down a gravel road a bit but nothing too hard to find. The spaces are wide open and big for multiple tents," notes Ryan P. from Camp Cadiz Campground.

Convenient lake views: Many campsites feature direct water views. "Some sites have gorgeous views of Lake Barkley. Immaculate and well maintained. Close to Grand Rivers and the famous Patti's Porch Restaurant, currently being rebuilt after a disastrous fire," mentions Cheryl K. at Canal Campground.

    What you should know

Site leveling challenges: Many campgrounds have sloped sites requiring preparation. "Sites are very sloped. Worst I've ever seen. Major drawback to this campground," warns John R. about Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park.

Limited hookup locations: Electric and water hookups are often placed inconsistently. "Electric far from pads - bring extension cord," advises Holly S. about Lake Barkley State Resort Park.

Seasonal closures: Most facilities close late October through March. "Open 3/13/2020 - 11/9/2020," notes the operating season at Prizer Point KOA, requiring advance planning for off-season trips.

    Tips for camping with families

Beach access planning: Arrive early for swimming areas with limited capacity. "The beach is free to public so very crowded and some elements are not family friendly," cautions John R. at Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park.

Activity options: Look for campgrounds with multiple recreation options. "Camping, cabins, hiking, horseback, swimming, and even mini golf. There are numerous trails, and a plethora of wildlife," shares Nicole P. about Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park.

Playground locations: Canal Campground offers play areas near campsites. "They have a small playground, beach, several bath houses, a group camping 'pad', boat ramp, boat dock and easy roads for cycling," reports Rachel T.

    Tips from RVers

Extension cords required: Bring extra-length power cables for many sites. "We had to buy longer extension cables and a longer water hose, sites are very close together," warns Erin R. about Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park.

Pull-through availability: Shawnee Forest Campground offers easier access sites. "The gravel roads are slightly narrow with some trees but we did not have any issues getting to site 21. The water and electric(50/30/20 AMP) are at the back of the gravel pad. There are two sewer hookups, which was nice," reports MickandKarla W. at Shawnee Forest Campground.

Dump station access: Many campgrounds offer single dump stations with potential wait times. "Even the dump is on an incline," notes Lynn A. about Lake Barkley State Resort Park, highlighting the terrain challenges throughout the area.
