    South Sandusky Campground

Wonderful for all ages. Located on Rend Lake Illinois.

North and South Sandusky campground is located in southern Illinois on Rend Lake. It is a large state park with tons to do. From boating and swimming to hiking and relaxing. The sites have many areas that fit different needs. I have stayed this year in both. My site at North Sandusky was on the water and I could pull my pontoon right behind my campsite. The kids were close enough to the bathrooms and showers to walk. And there was fresh water located there as well. There was a park a bit further down the way as well. But no need as the lake was in the backyard.

South sandusky site was across from a park, bathrooms, showers and water. The beach was a 2 mi hike on a beautiful trail. But we could walk across the street to a fishing swimming spot as well.

The beach is super clean and monitored well.

The bathrooms were cleaned every morning before 7 am. Water had great pressure and was always nice and hot.

I love these campgrounds and can’t wait to go back.

    Lake camping with space

We went on Labor Day weekend and there were a number of sites open.  Many of the sites are walk up only.  The sites have a lot of room to enjoy a relaxing weekend or set up yard games.  Rend lake is a good size lake with numerous areas to explore the water.

The showers and bathrooms are centrally located, so they are a bit of a hike.  They are clean and not too busy.

    Rend Lake

    Nice campground a little cramped

The grounds at Rend lake are very well maintained and the staff is super friendly. Lots of families hanging about, so if peace and quit is kind of your thing might look for a better place to camp. Newer shower facilities in the north Sandusky section. Our site was OK, but I noticed several as I was riding around that  are *very* snug. I remember from the map it kind of looks like a lot of sites are very evenly spaced.

Guide to Rend Lake

Rend Lake features 18,900 acres of water surrounded by 20,000 acres of public land. Located at 405 feet above sea level in southern Illinois, the lake offers a varied shoreline with multiple camping areas operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Camping facilities remain open from March through November, with some sections of Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park maintaining year-round availability for winter campers.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Gun Creek provides easy lake access with multiple fishing spots. "Great rates and even better campsites. We got there late and had no problems finding a great campsite right next to the lake," notes Jonathan W. of Gun Creek.

Hiking trails: Paved paths connect many campgrounds for day hikes. At Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park Campground, "There is a short hiking trail that will take you to the resort," according to Chad K. The park maintains several miles of shoreline trails with moderate terrain.

Water activities: Swimming beaches provide designated areas for families. "Swimming, hiking, boating, playgrounds. Water and sewer hookups with 30/50 amp electric. Lots of shade. Friendly staff," mentions Rhonda M. about the recreation options available at the lake.

What campers like

Wildlife viewing: Many sites offer opportunities to observe local wildlife. "Never been to a CG with such abundant wildlife! Can sit at your spot and watch deer throughout the day," reports Lucas T. about his stay at Wayne Fitzgerrell State Recreation Area.

Lake views: Premium sites provide direct water access and views. "Many of the site are right on the lake and the sunrise and sunsets are always gorgeous," shares Gina J. about South Sandusky Campground, highlighting the natural scenery campers enjoy.

Spacious sites: Campsites typically offer adequate room for setup. "Nice, large, well thought out campground. Lots of trees, paved sites, bathrooms, showers, and well maintained," writes Moe F. about the layout at Gun Creek, where most sites accommodate standard camping setups.

What you should know

Reservation systems: Different campgrounds have varied booking policies. At Wayne Fitzgerrell, "Spots are first come first serve but seldom sell out. Get there on Wednesday to get a spot on the water!" advises Lucas T., highlighting the importance of timing.

Seasonal maintenance: Facilities undergo periodic updates and maintenance. "All brand new. They have redone this whole place, really nice, very clean," notes Jim L. about South Sandusky Day Use area's recent renovations.

Site selection considerations: Not all sites are created equal. "Absolutely must check how level the spots are before you book, as lots of sites are over 4 inch incline, which seems ok for smaller rigs," cautions Never Sitting S. about Gun Creek campground.

Tips for camping with families

Beach access: Family-friendly swimming areas provide recreation options. "We love the large beach. The campsites have a nice set up and are a decent size. The kids loved the playground," reports Missy D. about South Sandusky.

Playground availability: Multiple campgrounds feature playground equipment. "It's clean, the shower houses are immaculate. It's always fully stocked and clean. The beach isn't littered with trash," shares Amber M. about her family's experience at Rend Lake.

Shower facilities: Clean bathhouses serve as important amenities for families. "The restrooms were a short walk across the road and up the slope from site 30," notes Susan L., describing the convenient access to facilities at Gun Creek campground.

Tips from RVers

Hookup variations: Different loops offer varied utility connections. "For cheap you get a simple site with electric or for not too much more there are sites with water and sewage dump," explains Dave S. about Gun Creek.

Site leveling: Many campers note the importance of selecting level sites. "The sites were pretty level and nice. The fire pits were a little run down but the sites were nice and level with a table," reports Logan W. about camping at Pyramid State Recreation Area.

Equestrian considerations: While dedicated horse facilities are limited near Rend Lake, equestrian campers should contact Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park directly for options. Though not featuring designated horse corrals, the park's spacious layout may accommodate horse trailers better than other nearby facilities.
