East Shore Camping Area — Cheney State Park

    Year round camping available

We stayed overnight with our trailer en route. There are specific sites available year round that have water and electric available. These are located in the Marina and Lakeside campgrounds on the East side. The water spigots are insulated. 50 amp available at Marina campground only. 30 amp at both. Being winter, it’s pretty sparse, dry, and windy. For an overnight, it was an affordable stay.

My only complaint is that the available sites aren’t clearly communicated. We drive to every site until we found the right one. Wish they would update that info for winter camping.

Dump stations available! Unfortunately not for human consumption (see pic) :D

    All Seasons RV Park

    Clean RV Park

We stopped here on our way to NW Arkansas from western Colorado. The sites had gravel and were level. We had a pull through site with 50 amp service, water and sewer that fit our 40 ft Motorhome towing a Jeep. There was a bathhouse/shower with code entry which was nice. The sites had a picnic table. The office was clean and everyone was friendly. Rates were fair. I believe around $50.

    Pine Haven Retreat

    Nice rural overnight stay

We spent one night here (May 10, 2022). It was a nice CG for our cross country trip needs. There was one other camper (long term). The CG is all grass with a gravel entry/exit road. We had our pick of back-in sites or pull through– we chose a back-in. We did not have time to visit the office, clubhouse or showers. The CG is next to a rest stop on the west side and farm fields to the south and east. There is traffic noise from Hwy 50, but no bother. Cell phone reception was great.

Thank you goes to the management for allowing us to use our credit card for one night. Cash or check is preferred for short stays.

West Shore Camping Area — Cheney State Park

    Summer fun

The campsite has friendly staff, the facilities and campsites are clean, great swimming area. They are pet friendly and have a leash law. The boat ramp and dock are good sized and kept maintained. I have a great time everytime I go. I recommend it as a stop while you are in Kansas.

    Air Capital RV Park

    Clean Parking Lot

Needed a FHU site to flush the black tank near Wichita. Wanted to stay in the area after a Boondocker’s Welcome stay to finish our sight seeing. Backin site, very close together, concrete, but not level. Verizon signal great, close to groceries and restaurants. Believe a lot of residents are here long-term working. Overall, suited our purpose.

West Shore Camping Area — Cheney State Park

    BALD EAGLES!!!

Yep, we saw bald eagles every day of our stay. Majestic!

This campground is large and spread out. We road our bikes over every inch and clocked 12 miles. If you do mountain bike, you would enjoy the 9 + mile trail ( we walked it). It's flat and not challenging, but really nice, secluded and if you bring a lunch, there are 3 picnic tables on the lake that can only be reached by boat or the trail. Boating, fishing, birding, 18 hole disc golf course, swimming, biking or just relaxing, this place is great.

There are several loops within this State Park. The Gapher loop is for tents. If you are a tenter, you are in for a treat. Sites right are right on the water. The restroom water was on in this loop only.

Smarsh is a loop that is not on the lake side, but the only w/e loop that had water turned on during off season. It looks older and is low land. A large area of standing water was by the road. Even though it is older, has giant Cottonwood trees shading the sites.. one of the 10 modern bathhouse was conveniently located at the entrance to the loop. A playground and walking trails are across the main road. The longest trail runs through this loop.

The Hobie Loop has no services, but the amazing views make up for it. Half the sites are right on the water. Kayaks, Canoes, SUP can be launched right from the sites or just across the road. You pass a HUGE boat launch area before you get to this loop.

The last 2 loops ( North and South) are w/e loops, but water was off for the season. You could fill tanks at the vacant host site or the dump station.

The sites are all gravel or grass with the exception of handicap sites. I wouldn't they were level, but all doable.

It was WINDY every day so I couldn't kayak or SUP. I think it is just Kansas, though. I was sad to see so much trash on the road and the most remote part of the long hiking trail. Some could be from windy blowing stuff around, but the bad of empty beer bottles discarded on th me trail was not. We reported it.

A small store is just outside the entrance and Witchita is only 30 minutes away. Hutchinson is maybe 15 mi.

Guide to Hutchinson

Hutchinson, Kansas camping facilities offer diverse options from family-friendly RV parks to overnight self-pay spots. Located in the central plains at 1,535 feet elevation, the area experiences hot summers and mild winters with occasional severe weather. Campgrounds in this region typically feature level terrain with prairie landscapes and limited natural shade, making weather awareness essential during peak summer months.

What to do

Local festivals access: When staying at USI RV Park in Wichita, visitors have convenient access to regional events. "Close to everywhere, flat gravel sites, friendly owners and employees, full hookups, nice dog park and kid's playground. We travel through Wichita frequently and are happy to have found a place to stay overnight or longer when needed," notes reviewer Bonnie A.

Coffee shops and cultural exploration: Lindsborg offers unique cultural experiences near camping areas. "Quaint little town very convenient RV park with full hook ups sewer, water, and electricity. And lots of shade trees. You must visit the blacksmith coffee shop when you're in town!" recommends Lee D. about Coronado Motel and RV Park.

Outdoor recreation: The Halstead area provides recreational opportunities like fishing and miniature golf. "This is a resort. Everything you could want. Swimming pool, chuck wagon on weekends. Free minutes golf, etc. A very nice playground for children. Shower/Restroom. Even propane filling station. Laundrymat. Fishing," writes Debbie J. about Spring Lake RV Resort.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain well-kept amenities. "The bathrooms and showers were very clean and our kids enjoyed playing with a few other families that were there as well," writes Justin C. about Lighthouse Landing RV Park and Cabins, though noting, "The only reason this isn't 5 stars is that we had some difficulty finding our campsite."

Night arrival accommodation: Late-night arrivals are accommodated at several parks. "We arrived after 10pm the man in the office had our paperwork ready for us and escorted us to our lot. It was a huge level lot. Surrounded by open fields so we were able to fall asleep to the crickets. Such an easy stop for a cross country trip," reports Julie F. about All Seasons RV Park.

Straightforward self-registration: Some parks offer simple payment systems. "Payne Rv park has 18 full hook up sites and is located outside of Newton. It is perfect for a night but not a lot to see otherwise. The fee is $20 per night and you pay across the road. The sites are gravel, pull they, and have 50/30/20 amp," explains Shannon G.

What you should know

Spacing considerations: Site size varies significantly between parks. "Not impressed with lot size. I have never seen a lot where both campers didnt have room to out out their awnings. Very tight. Otherwise fine," reports Travis H. about All Seasons RV Park.

Development status: Some parks remain in development phases. "Sites are still being made, not all sites have picnic tables or fire pits. NO SHADE! For a one night stop between destinations it's okay. $ is right," notes Lisa P. about Lighthouse Landing.

Site selection flexibility: Smaller parks may offer relaxed check-in procedures. "As we were visiting Hutchinson during the state fair, Hutch's RV sites were all booked - but here were some spaces, not so far off. Larry was easy to communicate with by phone and text. We weren't given an arrival deadline, no forms or markers - had our choice of the available spots," explains James H. about Inman RV Park.

Tips for camping with families

Playground facilities: Several campgrounds feature play areas for children. "We stopped here for a night and this campground exceeded our expectations. There was a nice playground for our children and the sites were plenty big enough for us to get our truck and rig into," writes Justin C. about Lighthouse Landing.

Noise considerations: Traffic noise affects some parks more than others. "Clean bathrooms. Only communal fire rings and picnic tables. Country Highway sounds. Safe area and friendly patrons," notes Mark about Wichita's Spring Lake RV Resort.

Security features: Secured facilities provide peace of mind. "We stopped here overnight during our road trip across the country. It was a delightful surprise! The bathrooms are super clean, there is a very nice playground and fenced dog run," reports Jennie D. about USI RV Park.

Tips from RVers

Internet connectivity: Several parks offer reliable internet. "Gravel sites. Great, robust WIFI. Clean, modern bathrooms and showers," shares Dave D. about Wichita's Spring Lake RV Resort, rating it 5 stars and noting the $33 rate as a "bargain."

Minimal amenities at some locations: Some rv sites near Hutchinson, Kansas provide basic services. "Got here in the dark, fairly unremarkable RV Park... But perfect for our needs! The hosts were friendly & accommodating, letting us pay in the morning at checkout," writes Emily L. about Inman RV Park.

Commercial area locations: Some camping options are situated in business districts. "The small park is located in a commercial area but has fairly close access to downtown Wichita. It does have a small dog park and playground set an is good enough for a overnight visit," explains Casey B. about USI RV Park.
