The park features multiple camping loops with over 1,000 campsites situated at varying elevations between 1,285 and 1,339 feet. What to do
Fishing access points: Multiple shoreline fishing spots available at Boulder Bluff Area — El Dorado State Park where campers can catch various species. "My family travels to alot of lakes every year. This lake has everything we look for. Grills d firepits at EVERY site. Good fishing, 2 swim large swim beaches, plenty of out buildings and play areas," notes reviewer Leigh M.
Mountain biking trails: Santa Fe Lake offers beginner to expert mountain biking routes with trail markers. "The mountain bike trails as well as hiking trails are perfect for beginners to experts. It is large enough for wake but we love taking our kayaks out," shares Helena P. who appreciates the variety of skill levels accommodated.
Archery range: Located near the ranger station at El Dorado State Park's Walnut River Area, this facility provides target practice opportunities. According to Jason S., "There is a large playground for kids, a nice swim beach away from the main lake, an archery range, and they are building a pistol/rifle range next to the ranger station for public use."
What campers like
Lake views from campsites: Waterfront camping at the Equestrian Loop provides constant water sounds. "We pulled in our PUP for a night sleep. The spot we chose to pop up was right near the water, and you could hear the waves hitting the shore all night long. A beautiful and peaceful sound," notes Brittany G. about her experience at Boulder Bluff Area — El Dorado State Park.
Spacious, level sites: Bluestem Point Area — El Dorado State Park offers well-maintained camping spaces with adequate room between sites. "This was our first time camping in our new travel trailer and we were pleased with having such an easy to use campground so close to home. The sites were level and spacious. We will definitely be back," mentions Todd P.
Dog exercise facilities: Deer Grove RV Park features a designated off-leash dog area that pet owners appreciate. "The park was clean and friendly. I loved the dog park so I could let my pups run free. There is a very pretty pond area on the property, with very nice walking trails," explains Natalie D., highlighting the pet-friendly amenities beyond standard leash areas.
What you should know
Bathroom maintenance varies: Some facilities may have maintenance issues or limited privacy. "The toilet at the loop are pit. The bath house was not clean and many of the showers didn't work. Water is lukewarm but water pressure was great. No stall doors on toilets or showers," reports Tracy N. about Boulder Bluff Area — El Dorado State Park.
Holiday weekend crowds: The park becomes significantly busier during major holiday weekends, affecting the overall experience. "This is a popular weekend get-away. It's less than an hour from Wichita, clean, taken care of. My experience over the holiday weekends has usually been that's when the rowdy crowd shows up but this campground was comfortable and family-oriented," notes Brad H.
Water hookup limitations: Some campgrounds have specific water access restrictions. At Harvey County East Park, "the water hookups are shared between sites and currently have signs reading, '15 MINUTE TIME LIMIT. Do Not Leave Water Hose Connected, Even If You Have A Splitter,'" reports Meghan B., an important detail for RVers planning longer stays.
Tips for camping with families
Playground proximity: Choose sites near play areas for convenience with children. "We usually stay on the Walnut River side as there is a large playground with tent sites close enough to keep an eye on the kiddos. They also have a swim area on this side. Bathroom and shower are next to the playground which is also convenient for us," recommends Kara S. about Walnut River Area — El Dorado State Park.
Swimming beach safety: The designated swim beaches offer controlled environments for children with shallow areas. "The designated swim areas are great for the whole family because there is a wide and far out area that doesn't get too deep while being roped off," notes Zephyr Y., providing important safety information for families with young swimmers.
Off-season camping: For quieter family experiences, consider camping during shoulder seasons when facilities remain open but crowds diminish. "This park is massive. Lots of amenities in El Dorado. And a quick jump to Wichita. We will be back," mentions Tracy N., highlighting the park's year-round accessibility despite seasonal changes.
Tips from RVers
Dump station locations: Multiple options exist for emptying tanks, including city facilities. "We used the city of El Dorado dump station," notes Tracy N., providing an alternative to potentially busy park facilities during peak times.
Electrical hookup availability: 4 mile Creek RV Resort and Campground offers full hookup sites but requires navigation of rough access roads. "Rough gravel roads two miles into and out of property, but only about 2 miles south of Hwy 400," reports Joyce R., important information for large rig drivers considering this pet-friendly camping option near El Dorado, Kansas.
Leveling requirements: Be prepared for uneven parking pads at some loops. "The parking pad was nowhere near level, so you'll want to plan for that," warns Tracy N. about the Equestrian Loop, advising RVers to bring appropriate leveling equipment for their rigs.
