Best RV Parks & Resorts near Waveland, IN

Several RV parks near Waveland, Indiana provide suitable accommodations for motorhome travelers. Shades State Park Campground operates from April through October with sites capable of handling larger vehicles, though all camping is primitive with no electric hookups. Turkey Run State Park Campground, open year-round, offers both 30-amp and 50-amp electric hookups with water available at central stations. According to one visitor, "The RV spots were a bit close together and partially shaded doesn't actually mean partially shaded, but the site is well maintained with several dump stations and water fill ups." Cloverdale RV Park, located about 25 miles from Waveland, provides full-service RV sites with 30-amp connections and sewer hookups, while Thousand Trails Horseshoe Lakes features pull-through RV pads that accommodate big rigs from late April to mid-October.

Across the region, most RV parks maintain paved interior roads with varying site surfaces from gravel to concrete pads. Full hookup availability differs significantly between state parks and private campgrounds, with state facilities typically offering electric-only sites while commercial operations provide complete water, sewer, and electric connections. Cell service remains consistent throughout most parks, though signal strength may vary in the more wooded areas around Shades State Park. Dump stations are available at all major campgrounds, with Turkey Run and Cecil M. Harden Lake providing multiple stations to accommodate weekend traffic. Many RV sites require advance reservations, particularly during summer months and autumn weekends when fall foliage attracts numerous visitors. Pet-friendly policies exist at most locations, though restrictions apply in certain park buildings and facilities.

    Terre Haute Campground

Great location to I-70 and Terre Haute

This campground is great proximity to I-70 for an easy on/off the interstate and just outside of downtown Terre Haute (approximately eight miles). The park is nice and shady with large trees. When we were there in November, there were very few other campers and most appeared to be transients there for just one night. With all the amenities in this place there is probably a lot going on in the summer. Downtown Terre Haute has plenty of activities including live music, sporting events, museums, restaurants, and historic sites.

RV sites are pull thrus and back-ins that vary from 50 amp full hook-up with deluxe patio to 30 amp water/electric. All sites were level. There are definitely sites big enough for big-rigs with tow vehicles so you don’t have to unhook if you are just stopping for a night. Water, sewer and electric hook-ups were well-placed and easy to reach. In addition to the RV sites, there are kamping cabins with deluxe accommodations (including air conditioning, kitchens, and bathrooms) capable of sleeping up to 6 people to rustic cabins without bathrooms. Tent sites are available as is a “teepee.”

Amenities at the park include: swimming pool, camp store (with fire wood), full service restaurant (May – November), propane fill, bike rental, basketball courts, playground, horseshoes, petting zoo, and coin laundry. The restroom and shower house was clean. There is a dump station located at the exit of the park. Our Verizon 4G phone and hotpsot had great service. Our antenna picked up about two dozen television channels

If you have a dog, there is an off-leash dog park and you are free to walk dogs around the property and there is a long road leading into park. The only problem we had with the park was that some of the trees were not trimmed and the roads where narrow and would rub against our RV.

    Crawfordsville KOA

    Nice KOA

Shade, grass, and gravel sites. A lot better than most KOAs. They ask that you not put outdoor rugs on grass; no problem as grass is nice. Sites 1-10 are your best bet for Starlink if that’s what you have; best opening through tree canopy of the northern sky. Pet friendly; counted three cats and a dog in the office when I checked in. Was given the option of choosing my site out of the seven available for my reservation. A mix of long term residents and travelers; some of the long term resident sites were a little junky.

Cecil M Harden Lake Raccoon State Recreation Area

    Plenty of fun!

Raccoon State Recreation Area | Cecil M Harden Lake is located in the heart of historic covered bridge country just 50 miles West of Indianapolis. The campground is surrounded by the 2,060 acre Cecil M Harden reservoir offering boating (boat rental), fishing and a large swimming beach with concessions and amenities. The campground is extremely well maintained with many sites sheltered by tree canopy ranging from non-electric, 30 amp, to 50 amp. Fresh water is available at fill stations and a spacious dump station area make for easy disposal. Many of the sites are not level so chose wisely to suit your needs. Easy beach access from the campground via a paved walk/bike path, well stocked camp store at the entrance to the campground, well maintained bath house facilities, active interpretive Naturalist programs, and numerous hiking trail opportunities round out the amenities. This is a beautiful campground; and if you like to explore...take a drive through the area and enjoy the many historic towns, covered bridges and roller mills throughout the county.

    Mccormick's Creek State Park Campground

    Indiana's First State Park

This park is a southern Indiana beauty. Indiana's first state park dating to 1916. The heart of the park is McCormick's Creek Canyon with stunning views, hiking and some of the best wildflower displays in the state...and let's don't forget McCormick's Creek waterfall...yes its probably only 10' but this is a big deal for Indiana. The park offers numerous hikes varying in difficulty accessing features and attractions to include a 90' fire tower, scenic canyon and waterfall, small cave(Wolf Cave), interesting sinkholes and some stunning second growth hardwood forest. A center piece of the park is the Canyon Inn offering hotel accommodations, dining, seasonal swimming pool(guests only) and in the winter months a massive warming fireplace. The campground provides 189 electric only sites(30 amp) typically gravel pads and 32 primitive sites; most having nice tree canopy for summer shade. Larger coaches have limited choices. The park has an exceptional seasonal outdoor pool, seasonal camp store, very active nature center and naturalist program. Just minutes from the park is the town of Spencer with everything you need to re-supply or grab a dinner out...restaurants, grocery, Wal-Mart, fuel and more

    Lieber State Recreation Area Campground

    A boaters paradise!

The center piece of Lieber State Recreation Area is the 1,400 acre Cagles Mill Lake. This is a flood control reservoir that is popular for pleasure boating, small house boats and sport fishing. Nearby attractions include the beautiful Cataract Falls. The campground consists of 115 Class A(electric only) and 94 Class B campsites with most tucked under hardwood and pine tree canopy. The campground features include a camp store for basic needs; firewood, ice, sundries and boat rental plus a recently updated dump station and potable water access area and clean comfort stations. Electric service is 30 amp only. Plenty of spots for larger rigs and many are fairly level with asphalt pads. The park offers a seasonal aquatic center with a zero entrance pool and water slide, a nature center with interpretive naturalist program, numerous shelters, playgrounds and picnic areas. Boating is the focus...but the camping is nice too! Easy access location just 3 miles south of Interstate I-70 on IN-243, 40 miles West of Indianapolis, 35 miles East of Terre Haute. Reservations recommended on summer weekends; reserveamerica.com

    Prophetstown State Park Campground

    Campground with lots to offer

This is a really nice campground with many shaded sites. We camped in a pull-through full hookup site that was very level. There is a 5-mile paved bike trail that runs through the park. The trail winds through a prairie to where the Wabash and Tippecanoe Rivers meet. Very pretty ride. The state park has a water park and a working farm.

    Turkey Run Canoe & Camping

    Close Quarters

The manager Tina and her husband are great people but the camp sites are to close together and we would not camp here again. The sites are difficult to get into and although they allow one car on the site there is barely room for that one car. The electric is shared with another site which could be a problem if you have the same type of service since there is only one 50 amp, one 30 amp, and one 20 amp service per hook up. There is portable water at the entrance but the road coming and going to the campsite is only wide enough for one rig and you will block traffic while you are filling up. The campsite is backed up to a major highway so it is loud by nature. We choose to enjoy our stay but will not be back. I hope this helps you!

Guide to Waveland

Camping near Waveland, Indiana centers around several state parks and private facilities situated within Indiana's west-central region. These campgrounds sit among rolling terrain punctuated by ravines, sandstone formations, and Sugar Creek's winding path. Summer temperatures typically reach 85°F with high humidity, while spring and fall camping offers cooler conditions averaging 60-70°F with periodic rainfall.

What to do

Hiking trail challenges: Turkey Run State Park offers distinctive hiking experiences, with trails ranging from easy to rugged. Visitors encounter unique terrain features including stream beds and ladders. "We hiked Trail 3 with our dog, but we cut off early before the ladders using Trail 10. Our dog did pretty well in the section of Trail 3 before the ladders, and be prepared to get wet," notes one Turkey Run State Park Campground visitor.

Water recreation options: Sugar Creek runs through the area, providing opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, and tubing. "Sugar Creek Campground and Canoe Rental LLC" offers equipment rentals and guided trips. A visitor shares, "we had fun tubing in sugar creek through Clements Canoes. It was August so the river was kinda low and we had to stand up and walk a few times."

Fishing experiences: Multiple ponds and lake access points provide fishing opportunities throughout the area. "There is a nice pond in the center of the property that has good size fish! The pond seems to be well maintained and clean," reports a visitor to Peaceful Waters Campground.

What campers like

Woodland seclusion: Shades State Park offers primitive camping with natural separation between sites. According to one visitor, "Lots of really nice campsites..." while another notes, "Great sites that offer decent privacy with brush & trees as a barrier between sites."

Campground activities: Beyond hiking and water recreation, many campgrounds provide on-site activities. A Rockville Lake County Park visitor notes, "Disc golf course is awesome, in the woods, up and down ravine. 18 holes plus practice basket. Hole 1 starts by primitive sites closer to beach."

Clean facilities: Many campers highlight the well-maintained bathrooms and shower facilities. "The bathrooms were super clean and the showers were hot with good water pressure," reports a Turkey Run visitor, while a Rockville Lake County Park camper calls it "The cleanest campground we have been to in our neighborhood!"

What you should know

Site selection considerations: Campground layouts vary significantly with some sites presenting challenges. A Turkey Run camper advised, "watch out for the raccoons. Those guys are not afraid of anything. Also, the open, grassy area sites don't offer any privacy. If that's what you're looking for, try to get a wooded site on the outsides that back up to woods."

Terrain challenges: Shades State Park Campground features more rugged terrain than other nearby options. "Much less popular than Turkey Run this state park is great for hiking! Many trails lead to gorgeous rocky cliffs, the river and a gorgeous waterfall. Love that it's much less populated giving you are your crew more space and less noise," notes one visitor.

Reservation timing: Sites fill quickly during peak seasons (late spring through fall) especially at state parks. Visitors recommend booking several months in advance for summer weekends and fall foliage season.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature playgrounds and recreational facilities for children. A Peaceful Waters Campground visitor mentioned, "There is a playground for the kiddos if you have them, a volleyball net, and horseshoes."

Trail selection: When hiking with children, choose appropriate trails based on difficulty. "The majority of those have a decent number of trees separating you from the site next to you. We hiked Trail 3 with our dog, but we cut off early before the ladders using Trail 10," advises a Turkey Run visitor.

Beach access: For families seeking water activities beyond creek exploration, Cecil M Harden Lake Raccoon State Recreation Area provides a swimming beach. "I loved this camp ground, there was a beach which was nice and a building to get food. They have a basketball court, and a few trails," shares a visitor.

Tips from RVers

Leveling requirements: Several campgrounds feature uneven sites that require careful setup for RVs. A visitor to Cecil M Harden Lake notes, "Great place to camp, can be flooded at times, some of the sites have a huge inclines or declines, allot of sites reserved way in advanced. There is a few pull throughs, no water hook ups at site."

Site surface variations: RV sites near Waveland, Indiana vary from gravel to dirt with limited concrete pads. "We took our van and stayed at Turkey Run for a three night weekend. We were in a wooded section and it was pretty private however our site was pretty sloped," reports one camper.

Utility connection placement: Hookup locations can present challenges at some rv sites near Waveland, Indiana. "Good sized pull through style camp sites that are gravel and surprisingly pretty level! Very reasonable rates for a full hookup site," notes a visitor to Peaceful Waters Campground.
