    Tipsaw Lake

    Come one come all

Tipsaw Recreation Area Hoosier National Forest is the place to visit if you have a large group or family event planned.

We had a good time doing basic camping activities while here, nothing flashy just fun water sports, campfire activities and hiking. ( no signal so appreciate the quiet :)

5 camping areas which are mostly group based and reservable. Catbrier Loop is the more wide open campground with large RV sites, a pit toilet, pavilion and small field for group events and a path to the beach. Goldenrod (camping side by side) and Primrose (camping around the loop)offer more shade and area to spread out with pit toilets, picnic tables and fire rings. Dogwood has double RV sites and some singles, and you feel more “in the woods” with full canopy coverage. A showerhouse and pit toilet, picnic tables and fire pits. The largest area is Jackpine Loop, good shade, showerhouse and more privacy.

The beach area on Tipsaw Lake is very family oriented, nice bathhouse facility, small picnic pavilions on cement walkways and a nice beach with play area for the kids. We did not visit the beach because dogs are not allowed. Adjacent is the boat ramp which is ramp, dock, pit toilet and parking. The dogs had fun here playing in the water along the ramp, not much shore to speak of.

The Tipsaw Lake Trail is 5.9 miles of technical rolling hills with complete tree coverage. We hiked it and I noticed that it is a little overgrown but overall a nice trail. With all the rain the trail was muddy and several of the small streams still had water in them. Ticks are bad with the rain and overgrowth so apply your bug spray liberally!

In addition to the recreation area there is the Mogan Trailhead in the area which is shared with horses. A zip line Eagles Wing and Citgo gas station. Tell City to the south has the usual stores and fast food for any needed amenities, the ranger station is also located there but closed on the weekends.

I spoke with several of the camp hosts and they were very informative about the area and took good care of their areas. They also have the firewood if you need some.

Lake Lincoln Campground — Lincoln State Park

    Very nice!

Lincoln State Park in Southern Indiana. About as far South as you can go! (In Indiana!). We did a weekend visit.

150 electric sites. There's 30 & 50 Amp sites with water at each site!

6 handicap sites. There are NO pull through sites.

The best sites are by Lake Lincoln- 40 & 41. 39 is ok, but all 3 of these sites are in the sun most of the day. Also, 40 & 41 are not ON the lake. Trail 1 & a wide grassy area are before the water. The only advantage IMO is an unobstructed view of the water & a short walk to the lake.

The sites seemed short, but people were able to park very large rigs in them. Check the site dimensions before booking or call the office to make sure you'll fit.

There's a large primitive campground. They have a modern bath house with showers. Some cabins.

There's 2 bath houses in the electric side with flush toilets & showers. Very clean for a state park!

      A double dump station.

6 trails from easy to moderate. The longest is 3.7 miles.

Boating & fishing are popular, but electric motor only. There's boat rental.

There's a beach, but closed after Labor Day. The camp store is in the pavilion by the beach & has limited hours after Labor Day.

      There's a small nature center.

Lots of history in the park & in the area. Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial is directly across the road from the state park

. Santa Claus Indiana& Holiday World are nearby.

Lake Lincoln Campground — Lincoln State Park

    Very nice State Park

Very nice state park campground with electric, (50 on some, 30 on some), and water hookups. Two clean shower houses. Two dump stations. Lake for swimming, fishing, canoe, paddle boat and Jon boat rentals. Hiking trails and fire tower. Typical camp store on site. Gas station with propane about a mile from the camp ground. Has primitive sites and cabin rentals also. The park has a large outdoor covered amphitheater with several concerts throughout the season. Most sites are pretty level. There are a few that are not. The majority of the sites have at least partial shade. Weekends are usually booked up in advance. Through the week is no problem getting your choice of sites. Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial is adjacent to the State park. It has a living farm. Both are free. Admission to the state park is $7.00 per vehicle or a Indiana State Park annual pass for $50.00 gets you into any Indiana state park anytime for the year. You can book through reserveamerica.com or calling the park directly.

    Windy Hollow Camp and Recreation

    Price Gouging

I have a class A 50 amp RV and got put in a 30 amp pull thru with no sewer hookup and no wifi or cable and duck and goose poo everywhere .  The lady I assume was the owner is extremely rude and charges 60$ a day for.  The bathroom facilities are filthy and whatever you do don't buy any of the smelly outdated crap in the office store that reeks of musty mold.  Worst 4 days ever.

    Burdette Park

    Nice little sute

Burdette Park is on the west side of Evansville. Really nice park! Currently we are full timing there. They have maybe 24 full huck up spots and about 10 or so w/o sewer. 30/50 amp electric on all. All pads are drive through and very level. They don't have much going on in winter but summertime is great. Pool, trails, BMX racing on Friday nights and tons of shelters for your get-togethers! Wonderful camp managers!

    Patoka Lake Campground

Not bad, lots of hiking possibilities

It is family friendly in most parts. No lake view sites, but has a fitness trail with some neat stations accessible from the campground. There is a beach (decent walking distance away)

    Ouabache Trails County Park

    Excellent County Park

Great gem of a woodsy campground. Stayed one night before visiting George Rogers Clark National Park (you can park your rig right in front of the natl park visitors center on the street). Campground is out of the way, which I consider a positive.

The staff were great. Excellent communication, seamless reservation process. Received prompt response to email, voicemail message was left after booking explaining exactly where my site was located.

If you are coming in for one night, definitely pick site 23 or 24 pull throughs. TIP: Make sure you have an extension for your 30/50 AMP, and one for your water as well (but what serious camper doesn't already have those?). Definitely on the list of "do agains."

    Harmonie State Park Campground

    Lotsa trees

Ranger Review: Primus at Harmonie State Park

I recently visited Harmonie State Park near New Harmony, In. https://indianastateparks.reserveamerica.com/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=IN&parkId=570048 Just a heads up when camping in Indiana there is a fee to visit the State Parks. I always carry cash for that , laundry and in some states bathroom use. So, the number one thing that stuck out to me about this campground was the shade. For the most part it’s level (floodplain...I saw no standing water) And all the sites are nicely shaded (we are talking full growth) and good size. The sites are electric only, no water, no sewer. There are centrally located water hydrants and a dump station on the way out of the campground. The campground wasn’t very full when we visited, but there is a plethora of activities to enjoy. An Olympic size pool which back in the day my kids woulda loved. Hiking paths (very wide), one right by the campground and a connector trail to the mountain bike trail area. There’s also a bike section on the paved roads. You could spend a comfortable week here and not be bored.

Product Review: As a Dyrt Ranger I get to occasionally try out outdoor products while camping and this trip I brought along some Primus “kitchen gear” https://primus.us/ . Primus is known for its camping stoves , the kitchen accessories are pretty sweet too. I have the Trailsporks , a long spoon , a spatula for grilling , campfire plates and a campfire knife. These are very sturdy made accessories and pack in my kit without taking up a lot of space. There are a lot of options on the site to fit your packing needs too, from family fireside to fastpacking . I’m building my fireside kitchen kit .

Guide to Chandler

RV campgrounds near Chandler, Indiana primarily operate seasonally from spring through fall, with only a few locations like Lynnville Park and Burdette Park offering year-round access. The area sits at approximately 400 feet above sea level in the southwestern portion of Indiana, with campgrounds positioned along the Green River and various lakes. Summer temperatures typically range from 70-90°F, making water activities popular throughout the camping season.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Lynnville Park offers convenient fishing access with spots located directly on the lake. One camper noted, "Nice little campground next to a small lake... Sites are big and spaced apart." Another visitor shared, "My camping spot was right on the lake and it was beautiful."

Holiday World visits: Sun Outdoors Lake Rudolph serves as a perfect base for theme park adventures. "My family and I are new to the RV World... We were greeted immediately upon arrival, given face masks and hand sanitizer, and kindly escorted to our site," writes one reviewer. The park offers a tram service to Holiday World, making transportation convenient.

Hiking trails: Lincoln State Park features 6 trails ranging from easy to moderate difficulty, with the longest extending 3.7 miles. A visitor mentioned, "6 trails from easy to moderate. The longest is 3.7 miles." The park connects directly to historical sites including the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial.

What campers like

Halloween events: Sun Outdoors Lake Rudolph hosts special seasonal activities that draw regular visitors. A camper shared, "We went to Lake Rudolph for their Halloweekends and it is a one of a kind experience. They have so many activities for the kids such as hayrides, a DJ, pumpkin carving, and so many other things throughout the day!"

Clean facilities: Burdette Park maintains well-kept restrooms and shower facilities. According to one visitor, "Wonderful camp managers!" Another noted, "The bathhouse was very clean." This attention to cleanliness extends across several campgrounds in the area.

Family amenities: Scales Lake Park offers multiple recreation options beyond camping. "Two playgrounds, little petting zoo for kids. Beach area with small fee. Full hook up sites," reports one camper. Another mentions, "There is a boat ramp for fishing boats and kayaks."

What you should know

Traffic noise: Some campgrounds in the area experience road noise from nearby highways. At John James Audubon State Park Campground, "The campground is layed out parallel to highway 41. The sound of traffic whizzing by on the highway is constant." Another camper confirmed, "If you pick a campsite along the right side of the area, the other side of the fence is highway 41 so you will get traffic noise at all times."

Site spacing varies: Campground layouts differ significantly across the region. At Scales Lake Park, "The sites are very close together, so when the campsites are full you don't feel like you have much privacy or personal space." However, at Lynnville Park, "Sites are big and spaced apart."

Reservation systems: While most RV campgrounds near Chandler require advance booking, Lynnville Park operates on a first-come, first-served basis with a simple registration process. "Registration was easy on the town website," noted one visitor. Another described, "We checked in through the honor system as the store/office closed at 5p; we filled out a registration form put $22 in it and put it in the mail slot."

Tips for camping with families

Water activities: Burdette Park offers extensive water recreation beyond standard campground amenities. A visitor described, "Great secluded area. Large park with so much to do," while another mentioned, "HUGE swimming pool/water park with slides and several other outdoor activities."

Nature centers: Several parks feature educational facilities for children. Lincoln State Park has "a small nature center," while John James Audubon State Park offers "a great museum and nature center."

Pet restrictions: Dog owners should research trail access before arrival. At John James Audubon State Park, "If you have a dog there's only one trail that is dog friendly." Other parks have similar limitations on where pets can go beyond campground boundaries.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Choose carefully at Lake Rudolph for the most level spots. "Our spot was great and didn't require much leveling. We did get a deluxe spot. However we only got the spot because the others were sold out. Many of the other spots were on hills and right on top of each other."

Maneuverability: Some campgrounds present navigation challenges. At Scales Lake Park, "I'm not sure how you could get in or out if all the spots were reserved. It took a collaborative effort when it was time to pull out. The 'front' camper had to pull out first before the second could get hitched up."

Access roads: Be prepared for narrow streets in some towns. For Scales Lake, "The streets in the town are extremely narrow, making it hard to get into the park." At Sun Outdoors Lake Rudolph, "Driving in and out was a bit challenging mainly because a lot of people parked their vehicles/golf carts at the edge of the road or partly on it."
