    Family Fun

A relaxing campground for the whole family. Swimming, camp fires, children parks, dog park, small trails, and only 10 minutes from Indiana beach. Love staying here.

Dunewood Campground — Indiana Dunes National Park

Great spot to stay if you’re visiting

Compared to the other popular campground in the state park this is way less crowded. There’s tons of trails to do along the lakeshore and none are really far from one another. I grew up in NWI so I didn’t camp in Indiana often but I did here and loved it! There are a bunch of raccoons that can come steal food so beware of that! Overall nice though!

    Michigan City Campground

    Great campground

We stayed in the off season in a site close to the laundry facility and office. Great campground for families. Our site was smaller however, no one was around us so it seemed bigger. They do have nice premium sites in the front. Loved that it is gated and and key card access after hours. Has a dog park and a playground for the kids.

    Michigan City Campground

Not my favorite, but not horrible

Pros - playground, pool, well kept grounds, helpful staff, gated/swipe card access, ponds, close to area attractions, decent campground WiFi, small fire ring, small dog park

Cons - tight spaces, BYO grill, bad showers, dirty/tight bathroom area

The mens room is just gross. Water in the stalls because showers don’t drain. Water in the shower never gets hot. Missing shower heads with pressure that almost tears your skin. Can barely squeeze into the tiny stall. Toilets are gross.

    Michigan City Campground

    Great Campground

We used it as an over night stop right off of 94. It was perfect for that. It would also be perfect spot to stay longer if wanted to be in the area. Grounds were nice. Clean bathrooms, laundry, dog friendly, pool, office is friendly and has a store with game room. Nice dog park. We are in a 40ft with tow and did not need to unhook.

    Love's RV Stop-Demotte IN 394

    Clean and convienent

Great stop for the night, It's new, gated and has basic amenities like a General store, Dog park and basketball court and tennis ball court for some activities if you have kids. Plenty of space and Convenient. We reserved and checked in online. The only complaint I had is the site we were at showed a ground fault on the 50amp Circuit so I had to use the 30 amp circuit but it's Nov so no need to run dual ACs minor issue but still make sure your using your EPM devices.

    Norway Campground

    Great seasonal park

This park is under new ownership. They have gotten the pool repaired and open and have cleaned up much of the park with more to come. The creek flowing through makes it so cool and peaceful and the animal life is beautiful. Saw a huge crane in the creek today along with a whole duck family…the folks there are friendly. There’s a dog park, playground, bounce pad, basketball court, pavilion and a great big dam across the street where the fishing is great! Boats are welcome and the staff is great!

    Tippecanoe River State Park Campground

Clean, green and needs to be seen!

This campground is a great place for families and pets.

We camped in the electric part of the park. During our stay we enjoyed the hiking opportunities for us and our dogs.

There were children involved in bike riding and playing at the playground every day and activities like the park Challenge to explore the park in a guided way, looking for local animals and skeletal remains.

Yu can also fish, canoe, Kayak or tube on the Tippecanoe River.

The Comfort Buildings were well lit and clean. They were also well stocked.

There was a horse camp available as well as youth tenting and cabins to rent.

This is a great State Park with more things to offer in addition to the ones mentioned above. We will definitely be back.Check it out for yourself soon!

Guide to San Pierre

Tippecanoe River State Park offers multiple camping options across 7.5 miles of riverfront terrain in north-central Indiana. The region experiences humid summers with temperatures averaging 80-85°F and moderate spring and fall seasons ideal for outdoor activities. Several campgrounds in the area maintain facilities for visitors with pets while providing access to natural attractions within a 45-minute drive radius.

What to do

Hiking at fire tower: Tippecanoe River State Park features well-established trails with varying difficulty levels leading to scenic overlooks. "Small but worth going. Fire tower climb was beautiful. A nice little place to relax," notes Nicole B. The park's trail system includes shorter routes suitable for families with children.

Fish at Bass Lake: Hickory Hills Campground provides access to fishing spots at nearby Bass Lake. "Small, not busy, close to several beautiful parks and fishing spots," mentions Amber A. Anglers can target bass and panfish with electric motors permitted on the lake.

Stargazing programs: Michigan City Campground hosts occasional astronomy events in their open areas. "Did participate in a star gazing event being held that weekend and it is still something my husband and I talk about regularly," shares Monica C. The campground's location approximately 50 miles east of Chicago offers darker skies than metropolitan areas.

Beach access: Dunewood Campground provides a nature-based camping experience near Lake Michigan. "The closest beach within the national park is Kimmel Beach which is beautiful," reports Katie O. The shoreline areas offer swimming opportunities from late May through early September.

What campers like

Shaded campsites: Tippecanoe River State Park features mature trees throughout the camping areas. "All sites are not too far from the bathrooms," notes Cynthia K. The electric campground contains 112 sites with gravel pads rather than dirt surfaces.

Clean facilities: Indiana Dunes State Park Campground maintains well-kept restrooms and shower buildings. "Bath house was clean with good hot water. A camper sink for dishwashing was a nice bonus," mentions Katherine T. The campground offers electric-only service requiring campers to arrive with full water tanks.

Gated security: Michigan City Campground provides controlled access for registered guests. "Love the secure entrance and key card access. Pool and bathrooms were clean, although the bathroom could use a slight update," says Beth B. The security features allow families to camp with greater peace of mind.

Family activities: Last Resort Campground organizes weekend events for campers. "Saturday night golf cart parade. After dark the campers with golf carts do a parade around the campground and toss candy," explains Ron L. The campground also maintains a fishing pond and swimming pool on the property.

What you should know

Cell service variations: Coverage varies significantly between campgrounds in the region. "I have AT&T service and could not use my phone at all, my husband has Verizon and had no problems with cell service," reports Monica C. about Tippecanoe River State Park. Plan communications accordingly when visiting more remote areas.

Insect preparation: Summer months bring increased mosquito activity to wetland areas. "Spring & late fall would be a good time to visit," advises Cynthia K., noting that mosquitoes become problematic during summer months at Tippecanoe River.

Site selection considerations: For quieter experiences at Tippecanoe River State Park, "Stay away from sites 73/75 & 105/106. Right by the pits, with a sidewalk between them," suggests Cynthia K. Interior sites near comfort station B provide direct access to the playground for families with children.

Train noise: Dunewood Campground experiences periodic railroad sounds. "Could hear Trains throughout the night. Great facility with showers, water fountains, and a camp sink," notes Truly W. Similar noise affects Indiana Dunes State Park campground, particularly important for light sleepers considering tent camping.

Tips for camping with families

Playground proximity: At Tippecanoe River State Park, specific sites offer playground monitoring capabilities. "Sites 2,3,4,6,&7 have direct access to a playground & you can watch your children from your site," recommends Cynthia K. These locations allow parents to supervise while maintaining their campsite activities.

Animal interactions: Hickory Hills Campground provides children's activities beyond standard playgrounds. "Great new pool and pool house, FUN petting zoo, gemstone mining for the kids, hayrides, as well as crafts and a scavenger hunt," shares Melanie H. The animal encounters offer educational opportunities for younger campers.

Swimming options: Last Resort Campground maintains a pool for safer swimming than river locations. "Spaces are TIGHT on the full hook up side. We have a 21' and hardly got in. We were super close to fellow campers. On the other side of the grounds around the pond (electric only) sites were much bigger and secluded," advises Heather G. when choosing family-appropriate sites.

Pet-friendly beaches: For pet-friendly camping near San Pierre, Indiana with beach access, Dunewood Campground offers trails connecting to Lake Michigan shoreline. "Foresty and beautiful...great shading from trees and very green!" notes Truly W. The campground requires leashed pets and proof of vaccinations for all animals.

Tips from RVers

Site length requirements: Oak Lake RV Resort accommodates larger rigs with staff assistance. "We were nervous about fitting our big rig, but pull-through site #17 made it flawless," explains Nadiehsda B. The resort provides help with setup, particularly beneficial for first-time RVers.

Electric hookup notes: Tippecanoe River State Park provides electric service with some layout considerations. "Be ready with back up cords, some sites require 75 ft to hook up," advises Frank M. The park's electric sites might require extension cords depending on placement of hookups relative to camper position.

Pull-through availability: For RV campers seeking easier access, "Site 58 is the only pull through in the campground," at Tippecanoe River State Park, according to Cynthia K. Most sites require back-in parking, which can be challenging for longer trailers or motorhomes.

Dump station logistics: Indiana Dunes State Park Campground provides efficient departure services. "Two dump stations made wait minimal," notes Jeffrey S. This feature reduces congestion during busy weekend checkout periods when multiple RVs need to empty tanks simultaneously.
