    Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

    Amenities include:

    - a community fire pit

    -  game room with television

    - guest laundry

    - dump station

    - gift shop

    - pet friendly options

     -WiFi

    - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

Can be crowded, but a good park overall

We were a bit surprised that despite having a paid reservation , we still had to pay a $20 Day usage fee to enter the park, but no matter. This is a sprawling and sometimes confusing campground to find your way in. But the sites are generally shady if a bit close together. There are five facilities with showers and running water and six pit toilets. drinking water is accessible throughout the park.
The majority of sites have six person tables, though some, especially in the new 385-416 loop have little four person tables. These are also the least shaded.
Campground and facilities are clean and well maintained.
The General Store is one of the most impressively well stocked I have ever seen. Equipment, toys, tools, food souvenirs, you name it. Good dry firewood is $6.50 a bundle in the store, $7 on the honor system after hours. It burns fast, so you might want to buy more than you think. The store is open until 9:00 Friday & Saturday, but only 2;PM on Sunday and never on Monday. Keep that in mind if you're doing a 3-day weekend as we did. When checking out, look up to see the beautiful wooden canoe with wildlife inlaid wood.
Fire pits are mostly round iron with non-adjustable swing-away grills. Booking is through Indiana DNR/ Reserve America so you can see photos of the site you pick.
This was our second experience with an Indiana state park, and like our first (Pokagon, in the winter) we were impressed with the clear marking of the hiking trails (and canoe trail for that matter) there was a map and guidepost at every junction.
There's a beach, concession stand and boat rentals on Sand lake, the Park's largest. Lastly, there's a fish cleaning shed with running water outside the campground entrance that anyone in the park can use, something I wish more parks would provide.

    Harrison Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet place to get away

We have been here a few times. Really enjoy the secluded sites and the lake. It’s a small campground but it’s clean and quiet. Most sites don’t have water hookups but they do have electric. There isn’t much to do outside of the campground but there is a nice lake with canoe and kayak rentals. Very pet friendly and even has a dog beach.

    Twin Mills Camping Resort

    Beautiful Wooded Campground

Twin Mills is a really beautiful and quiet RV Campground, with tall trees in Northern Indiana. We frequent this location when getting RV Repairs and visiting Elkhart, the birth place of most RVs.

There are cabins and tent sites and a large lake access point with a beach area. The playgrounds seemed to be in good shape and the dumpsters were centrally located.

The park has a gate entrance for security.

There is a large pool area and basketball court.

There are several sections in the park, some more wooded and narrow sites, some are more spread out.

Cellular: T-Mobile had good signal strength and bandwidth, AT&T was not as good but still doable.

Most of the sites are full hook up, some have 30amp and some have 50amp.

Amenities: Pool Clubhouse Basketball Volleyball Picnic tables Fire rings Trash Playground Lake access Beach area Dock Cabins Tent sites

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

Great for families and group camping

If you're traveling with kids or enjoy the community of being near your fellow campers this is a great option. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat this may be a bit loud and busy. However, the many amenities are a great way to find peace with the 9 lakes, 12 trails and a beach for swimming. The lakes and connecting channels are stunning for canoes and kayaks and there is a convenient rental area. This is a campground of convenience with a very well stocked campground store with reasonable prices right next to the entrance. There is firewood and ice for sale as well as staple cooking items and cute souvenirs. The campsites are spacious and have a picnic table and fire pit at each. This campground is a great way to stay close to the fun and other campers. With so many options there is a something for everyone! Safe travels happy campers 😄

    Lake Hudson Recreation Area

Beautiful Nature, Dark Sky Rustic Camping

Lake Hudson is a dark sky preserve full of trees, nature and a beautiful lake. The camping sites come with an electric plug in, a nice fire ring and a picnic table. They are cute sites. Most are not by the lake. There is a dumpster. The facilities are rustic. The facilities are port a potty type with wooden walls and cement floor. No showers. A hand pump well for water. The swimming part of the lake requires a drive. The Lake is beautiful with a sand beach, no wake boating and grills. However it is rustic so there is goose poo. The woods are beautiful. There is hunting. We had heard that some people partied there but the night we were there it was quiet and people were respectful. We had a beautiful fire and dutch oven dinner. We saw one cute racoon who ran away when I reacted. We were worried about mosquitos but we only saw one.

    KOA Campground Middlebury

    Decent for a quick stop

Got us in last minute when our other plans fell through. Site was only $35 for a back in water/electric. Grateful for it but wouldn’t have booked this otherwise. Site was unlevel and ran into a hill on the back end. Not much space on ether side of us. Corner lot and the rec center and basketball court was directly behind. Kids cutting through the campsite all the time.

We called several times before anyone answered and the store was clearly understaffed. Although the staff was kind and doing their best. Picnic table is on its last legs and fire ring looked like it was run over. Overall it was a little shabby but definitely not bad. Good for a place to sleep but I wouldn’t book a week here. Not many restaurant options either and also no signs for this one on the highway.

    Cold Brook County Park

    Nice little county park!

29 campsites pretty close together with old growth trees interspersed around the campground. Fishing pier and boating, playground area, and beach. No longer has primitive camping. Some hiking trails...short. is next to a busy road, so traffic all night. Staff was great! Showers and bathrooms cleaned multiple times a day. Pet friendly. Would stay here again!

Guide to Orland

Cabin camping near Orland, Indiana provides accommodations within the distinctive lake region of northeast Indiana, where over a dozen interconnected bodies of water offer varied outdoor experiences. The area maintains average summer temperatures between 75-85°F, creating ideal conditions for water activities from May through September. Winter cabin rentals remain available at several locations with temperatures typically ranging from 20-35°F.

What to do

Kayaking on connected lakes: At Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground, visitors can navigate through nine connected lakes via channels. "There is so much to do. Between the hiking trails, boating, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and biking. You won't ever get bored," writes Amanda J.

Toboggan run in winter: Pokagon State Park offers a quarter-mile refrigerated toboggan run operational from late November through February. "There's an inn, restaurant, cabins, boat rentals, horseback riding, bike trails, beach, toboggan run, etc. Tons of picnic areas and pavilions; would be a great spot for a family reunion," notes Amy K.

Inflatable water course: Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday features a unique water attraction during summer months. "They have a new pool and lazy river which is fantastic. There's an inflatable obstacle course on the lake," says Doug A., adding details about additional recreation options.

What campers like

Historical music venue: Buck Lake Ranch attracts music enthusiasts with its storied performance history. "So many legends have been on the stage at Buck Lake Ranch including Dolly Parton! This campground is great for music lovers as they have live shows on some weekends and a huge festival in September," reports adrienn S.

Modern bathroom facilities: Cabins at Pokagon State Park complement clean facilities. "The park is beautifully maintained. The bathroom and shower facilities were clean and updated," states Mary H., highlighting infrastructure quality that enhances the cabin camping experience.

Privacy between sites: Many cabins offer secluded settings away from neighboring units. "Sites were nice and secluded where we were," notes fred F. about Crooked Creek Campground and Cabins, mentioning the benefit of private bathrooms that accommodate "one occupant at a time."

What you should know

Reservation timing: Most cabin properties require bookings 2-3 months in advance for summer weekends, with Pokagon State Park sometimes filling 4-6 months ahead for premium cabins.

Varying bathroom access: Cabin locations determine bathroom proximity. "The bathrooms are nice and the camp personnel are friendly. There is a dog park for walking the dog but with so much driveway I just walk the dog around the park," explains Matt S. about Angola/Hogback Lake KOA.

Road noise concerns: Some cabin locations experience traffic sounds. "The only drawback is the traffic noise if you're staying in any of the sites near the front of the park," warns Doug A. regarding sites at Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday.

Tips for camping with families

Water activities for children: Manapogo Park provides family-oriented water recreation. "Campground off 120 between Orland and Fremont, on Lake Pleasant. Boat ramp for easy access. Lots of stuff for kids to do: sandy beach with swim area, large playground, ice cream in the store, and planned entertainment during the summer on the weekends," recommends Chotsie S.

Security measures: Gated entrances enhance safety at several properties. "Campground is gated and there are strict 5mph speed limits which is great for safety," notes Chotsie S. about Manapogo Park.

Playground access: Consider cabin proximity to play areas when booking. "The nightly rented camp spots are far from the shower house and play areas," cautions Chotsie S. regarding Manapogo Park's layout.

Tips from RVers

Campsite selection strategy: When booking cabins near RV areas, consider location carefully. "Not too sure with all the empty spots why, but...very wooded, the unit beside us obviously was a seasonal and had placed their unit horizontally in the space which made sitting outside awkward," shares Barbara P. about Twin Mills Camping Resort.

Extended stay amenities: For longer cabin stays, check internet availability. "Internet is through a paid campground service and was $5/day but was actually very good. Not too sure how service would be during peak season," notes Barbara P. regarding connectivity at Twin Mills.

Winter considerations: Many cabins lack winterization, but year-round options exist. "We spent this past week at Hogback Lake KOA. It is late in the season so much of the park was closed for the season, but we had a great year round site," reports Kevin A., providing insight for off-season visitors.
