Best Equestrian Camping near New Harmony, IN

Harmonie State Park Campground offers limited equestrian camping opportunities near New Harmony, Indiana. The park features extensive wooded sites with electric hookups and well-maintained trails, though no dedicated horse corrals appear in the facility listings. Camping areas accommodate tents, RVs, and cabin options with spacious sites set among mature trees. The campground's trail system includes several hiking paths ranging from 0.25 to 2.5 miles, with a separate 4-mile horse trail available within the park boundaries. Persistent raccoons frequent campsites, particularly after dark.

Located approximately 3 miles from the entrance gate, the horse trails provide a peaceful riding experience through the natural landscape. Riders should note that water access is available throughout the park with spigots located near bathhouses, though they cannot be permanently connected to campsites. The park maintains multiple bathhouses with showers, playgrounds for children, and a swimming pool open during summer months. Trailer parking is limited to designated areas, and the remote location means campers should arrive prepared with all necessary supplies, as the small camp store offers minimal provisions. The nearby Wabash River provides scenic views and additional recreational opportunities for visitors combining horseback riding with other outdoor activities.

Ranger Review: Primus at Harmonie State Park

I recently visited Harmonie State Park near New Harmony, In. https://indianastateparks.reserveamerica.com/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=IN&parkId=570048 Just a heads up when camping in Indiana there is a fee to visit the State Parks. I always carry cash for that , laundry and in some states bathroom use. So, the number one thing that stuck out to me about this campground was the shade. For the most part it’s level (floodplain...I saw no standing water) And all the sites are nicely shaded (we are talking full growth) and good size. The sites are electric only, no water, no sewer. There are centrally located water hydrants and a dump station on the way out of the campground. The campground wasn’t very full when we visited, but there is a plethora of activities to enjoy. An Olympic size pool which back in the day my kids woulda loved. Hiking paths (very wide), one right by the campground and a connector trail to the mountain bike trail area. There’s also a bike section on the paved roads. You could spend a comfortable week here and not be bored.

Product Review: As a Dyrt Ranger I get to occasionally try out outdoor products while camping and this trip I brought along some Primus “kitchen gear” https://primus.us/ . Primus is known for its camping stoves , the kitchen accessories are pretty sweet too. I have the Trailsporks , a long spoon , a spatula for grilling , campfire plates and a campfire knife. These are very sturdy made accessories and pack in my kit without taking up a lot of space. There are a lot of options on the site to fit your packing needs too, from family fireside to fastpacking . I’m building my fireside kitchen kit .

    Spring 2024

Had the campground to myself. Facilities for showering were fine. Park employees were very friendly. I saw some cabins at park that they rent out that looked like a good deal for the non camping people. Short drive away is the town of New Harmony. They seem to have a lot of events in summer and fall. Access to the Wabash River right at the park

New Harmony is a great place to vacation with family. The state park is gorgeous. The small town had several antique shops and local owned restaurants.

Large pool with water slide open in the summer. Same for nature center. Great trees. Quiet. Quirky little town of New Harmony nearby.

Beautiful wooded campground in southern Indiana

We've camped here for many years. Very close to historic New Harmony, but isolated from just about everything else . Come prepared with groceries, and necessities, because it's a long way to find a store. Te sites are very spacious. Only a few pull throughs. Level can be an issue, but we've never had any problems. Great hiking, children's programs. As seniors, we love the peace and tranquility of it.

Great Family camping, swimming pool, Biking , Fishing, Hiking

This campground is very well kept. There are paved roads the kids can bike on as well as mountain bike trails. Very nice swimming pool. Clean showers with hot water. Campsites are spacious. May places for large groups to camp when they put multiple sites together. Close the town of New Harmony a great place to catch a meal or just stroll through town. This campground is very clean and is kept that way by Host campers. No full hookups but there is a dump station.

    Great Trip

We had a great time here. Nice spaced out place. We stayed at site 192. It was at the back of the campground, but close to the bathrooms/showers and just across from the playground. It was close enough to walk to the Nature Center and grab ice cream. There’s even a hiking trail right behind. And not much through traffic since it’s in the back. Staff was extremely friendly. They had ice and firewood to purchase. Even the other campers were extremely friendly. We were only a few mins from downtown New Harmony. The coffee shop there was very good. Evansville was about 30 mins. We had to go get a new car battery there and DNR used a jump box to get us going. Very clean bathrooms and grounds. The only reason it didn’t get 5 stars were the showers. Older, took awhile to heat up, only had water for about 15 seconds at a time. Not easy to get a squirming toddler bathed. Better than nothing though. Great campground, highly recommend!

    Harmonie State Park Campground

    Nice, clean, state park.

Everything was well kept and clean. Multiple bath/shower houses on each loop. Push button showers. Takes about a minute to get water hot, but good after that. Dated, but clean and functional. The lights stay on 24/7 so bugs are in the shower house.

Multiple walking trails and bike trails. Nice shelter houses and picnic areas. Multiple playgrounds. Nature center in the campground. Many events scheduled for summer. New Harmony (town) is close by and a must stop. Nature walks, lots of unique history you will find nowhere else, quaint shopping, coffee shops, wine bar, dining, etc...

The pool has been filled in at the park. Very disappointing.

I was demolished by mosquitos and was covered in deet. Tried picaridin too. If you get the biters off you, the gnats were all over me too. Not sure if just time of year or maybe always this way (did rain multiple times).

Couldn't use mountain bike trails and most hike trails as it was too wet.

Suggest calling before making reservations because many of electric sites are not level, at all. Ask which would be best.

    Great Halloween Weekend for Kids

We stayed the weekend before Halloween. We missed reserving the weekend they have the campground trick or treating, which was the weekend before, but this was just as fun. Apparently that weekend has to be reserved the day reservations open for it. They had a trunk or treat in the pool parking lot and although there weren't a ton of vehicles, it was definitely enough for the kids to have fun trick or treating. Next time we'll be sure to park and hand out candy as well. There was also a hayride in the evening for a small fee and that included making smore's at the bonfire.

We camped with 3 other families and had adjacent sites that worked perfectly for us, plenty of space for the kids to play, although a little far from the playground.

Their hiking trails are nice, at least they were years ago when I camped here as a kid. The Wabash River has a great view, so be sure to check that out too. The little town of New Harmony is so quaint, you definitely have to stroll around town and visit the sites there! It's one of our favorites that is close to home

Guide to New Harmony

Equestrian camping near New Harmony, Indiana offers access to several state parks and conservation areas situated within the Wabash River Valley. This region experiences four distinct seasons with humid summers averaging 85-90°F and moderately cold winters with temperatures often below freezing. Most equestrian trails remain open from April through November, though seasonal closures may occur after heavy rainfall due to trail conditions.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Red Hills Lake State Park, anglers can target largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish in the 21-foot deep lake. "Beautiful lake with good fishing. Spots are a little unleveled but not bad. Nice restaurant, a little pricey but good food," notes Dusti M.

Trail riding: High Knob Campgrounds provides extensive trail access in the Shawnee National Forest. "The trails are great maps available some trails need marked a bit better," says Alicia B., who appreciates the campground's horse-friendly facilities.

Hiking: Explore multiple trail systems of varying difficulties. "The hiking trails are nice, at least they were years ago when I camped here as a kid. The Wabash River has a great view, so be sure to check that out too," recommends Nichole M. about Harmonie State Park's natural features.

Fall activities: Schedule your visit during autumn for special events. "They had a trunk or treat in the pool parking lot and although there weren't a ton of vehicles, it was definitely enough for the kids to have fun trick or treating. There was also a hayride in the evening for a small fee and that included making smore's at the bonfire," says Nichole M.

What campers like

Spacious campsites: Most campgrounds in the area provide ample room between sites. "Harmonie State Park is a nice campground. It has 200 sites, electric only, 5 bath houses and 2 pit toilets. Most campsites are big and spacious, with several loops that allow campers to face one another," reports Olivia S.

Wildlife viewing: Lake Mauzy East offers excellent wildlife observation. "Absolutely beautiful! Been traveling 150 days, 23 states plus DC, ...THE most pretty state! We lucked out and got an amazing spot... well they're all great! Super quiet, tons of birds, and we saw snake mounds but not yet seen one...birds and butterflies and owls," shares Adrianne.

Primitive camping options: For those seeking less developed sites, Camp Cadiz provides basic amenities. "Stayed here in March 2020. My favorite part about this campground was that there were only 8 campsites so it was very quiet and remote. The fire pit had a grate large enough to cook on and I didn't need to use my extra grate that I keep in my camping kit," says Hannah F.

Clean facilities: Regularly maintained bathhouses are available at several locations. "Shower houses are pretty clean and taken care of. We stay here many times throughout the camping season. Definitely worth the trip," mentions Renee T. about her experience at Harmonie State Park.

What you should know

Limited cell service: Connectivity can be spotty throughout the area. "It is located back in the hills, far off the highway. Very little cell phone signal. Very relaxing and enjoyable," explains Olivia S. about Harmonie State Park.

Wildlife precautions: Sam Dale Lake State Conservation Area and other parks have active wildlife. "Harmonie State Park looks like a great place for a family vacation. Our only problem was 1 or more raccoons kept coming into our site. We shooed them away but they kept coming back," warns Barbie G.

Water availability: Most campgrounds have central water access but not individual hookups. "They had a problem finding our site number in the dark, as they are facing the wrong way from driving direction. Sites are set far enough apart for privacy," notes Linette G.

Reservation requirements: During peak seasons, especially fall weekends, advance booking is essential. "We stayed the weekend before Halloween. We missed reserving the weekend they have the campground trick or treating, which was the weekend before, but this was just as fun. Apparently that weekend has to be reserved the day reservations open for it," advises Nichole M.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Camp Cadiz Campground and surrounding areas offer recreation areas. "The playground equipment was a short bike ride down the road, but right in the sun mid day so the equipment was too hot for the kids to play on until evening," notes Nichole M. about Sam Dale Lake.

Swimming options: Several parks feature swimming facilities during summer months. "Olympic size pool open during summer-has water slide, diving boards, separate baby pool with shade awning, and concessions," details Olivia S. about Harmonie State Park.

Kid-friendly trail selection: Choose appropriate hiking paths for children. "Great walking woods. but the restaurant is awesome. plenty of fish in the lake," mentions Brittany E. about Red Hills State Park's amenities.

Halloween events: Plan trips around seasonal activities if possible. "They have a fun fall festival around halloween. Nature center and nice swimming pool for the kids," explains Keith M. about special events at Harmonie State Park.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Many campgrounds have uneven sites requiring preparation. "At first I thought the sites were a bit rough and not very level. But while were there, they started to regrade the pads at the sites. The new gravel was leveled and packed flat. The sites are greatly improved," reports Doug W. about his experience at Red Hills State Park.

Hookup limitations: Most area campgrounds offer electric-only connections. "It clearly states electric only. Which was no problem. They had a water hookup that you could pull up to for more water if needed. Dump station right outside the campground. Site 35 was perfectly level for the Class C," explains Jonathon B. about Sam Dale Lake.

Roads and access: Some campgrounds have challenging access roads. "This campground is very well kept. There are paved roads the kids can bike on as well as mountain bike trails. Very nice swimming pool. Clean showers with hot water. Campsites are spacious," shares Dave C. about Harmonie State Park's infrastructure.
