Best Cabin Camping near New Harmony, IN

Several campgrounds near New Harmony, Indiana provide furnished cabin rentals with varying amenities and comfort levels. Harmonie State Park Cabins offers ADA-accessible units with electric hookups, picnic tables, and fire rings. These cabins include basic furnishings and climate control systems for year-round comfort. Ouabache Trails County Park features cabin rentals that one visitor described as "fantastic," with electricity, water access, and dog-friendly policies. Scales Lake Park in nearby Boonville provides rental cabins with access to shower facilities, restrooms, and outdoor recreation areas. Most cabins include beds with mattresses, basic furniture, and electrical outlets, while bathrooms are typically located in nearby shower houses rather than inside the units.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location and price point. Harmonie State Park maintains approximately 10 family cabins that require advance reservations, especially during summer months and holiday weekends. According to a recent visitor, these cabins "looked like a good deal for non-camping people." The Grayville KOA offers cabin camping options with more amenities than state park alternatives, including access to a camp store and laundry facilities. Pet-friendly cabins can be found at several locations, though policies vary regarding additional fees and restrictions. Cave-in-Rock State Park and John James Audubon State Park both maintain cabin rentals with seasonal availability, typically operating from April through November with limited winter access.

Most cabin rentals provide beds but require guests to bring their own linens, pillows, blankets, and towels. Kitchen facilities vary significantly between locations, with some offering only outdoor fire rings and others providing refrigerators, microwaves, or stovetops. Cooking utensils, dishes, and cleaning supplies are rarely included, so campers should pack these essentials. While Harmonie State Park has a small nature center with limited supplies, the town of New Harmony is approximately 3 miles from the park entrance. Visitors staying at cabins should arrive prepared with groceries and necessities, as one reviewer noted the area is "isolated from just about everything else" and "it's a long way to find a store."

Ranger Review: Primus at Harmonie State Park

I recently visited Harmonie State Park near New Harmony, In. https://indianastateparks.reserveamerica.com/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=IN&parkId=570048 Just a heads up when camping in Indiana there is a fee to visit the State Parks. I always carry cash for that , laundry and in some states bathroom use. So, the number one thing that stuck out to me about this campground was the shade. For the most part it’s level (floodplain...I saw no standing water) And all the sites are nicely shaded (we are talking full growth) and good size. The sites are electric only, no water, no sewer. There are centrally located water hydrants and a dump station on the way out of the campground. The campground wasn’t very full when we visited, but there is a plethora of activities to enjoy. An Olympic size pool which back in the day my kids woulda loved. Hiking paths (very wide), one right by the campground and a connector trail to the mountain bike trail area. There’s also a bike section on the paved roads. You could spend a comfortable week here and not be bored.

Product Review: As a Dyrt Ranger I get to occasionally try out outdoor products while camping and this trip I brought along some Primus “kitchen gear” https://primus.us/ . Primus is known for its camping stoves , the kitchen accessories are pretty sweet too. I have the Trailsporks , a long spoon , a spatula for grilling , campfire plates and a campfire knife. These are very sturdy made accessories and pack in my kit without taking up a lot of space. There are a lot of options on the site to fit your packing needs too, from family fireside to fastpacking . I’m building my fireside kitchen kit .

    Harmonie State Park Campground

    Great Trip

We had a great time here. Nice spaced out place. We stayed at site 192. It was at the back of the campground, but close to the bathrooms/showers and just across from the playground. It was close enough to walk to the Nature Center and grab ice cream. There’s even a hiking trail right behind. And not much through traffic since it’s in the back. Staff was extremely friendly. They had ice and firewood to purchase. Even the other campers were extremely friendly. We were only a few mins from downtown New Harmony. The coffee shop there was very good. Evansville was about 30 mins. We had to go get a new car battery there and DNR used a jump box to get us going. Very clean bathrooms and grounds. The only reason it didn’t get 5 stars were the showers. Older, took awhile to heat up, only had water for about 15 seconds at a time. Not easy to get a squirming toddler bathed. Better than nothing though. Great campground, highly recommend!

    Harmonie State Park Campground

    Spring 2024

Had the campground to myself. Facilities for showering were fine. Park employees were very friendly. I saw some cabins at park that they rent out that looked like a good deal for the non camping people. Short drive away is the town of New Harmony. They seem to have a lot of events in summer and fall. Access to the Wabash River right at the park

    Rend Lake Gun Creek Campground

Many lakeside sites, extra long drives for boat trailers, quiet and scenic

Rend Lake is a large COE recreation area with 4 campgrounds, some with full hook ups for $28 a night, two dams, 2 beaches, several boat launches, a marina, golf course and a restaurant.  Not all facilities were open when we visited in March.  Hiking and biking trails and close to town for gas and bait.  Each site has a stone picnic table and fire ring.  Showers, bathrooms and  playgrounds in multiple places and convenient locations.  Some sites do have steep grade, originally booked Bluejay 48 and moved.

    Cave-in-Rock State Park

    Nice option in southern Illinois

General: I was a bit apprehensive about this state park because it did not take reservations, so we made sure to arrive by 11 am but we had no reason to worry – compared to other Illinois campgrounds we visited on this trip, this one was almost empty on a Wednesday in mid-October. Steve, the host, was very friendly and checked us in. The rate of $20 for an electric site was reasonable; we put a tag on our site and set off to explore nearby Garden of the Gods for the rest of the day, secure that we had a place to rest our heads for the night!

Sites/Facilities: The sites are set a decent amount of space apart and have an additional parking space for a second vehicle. A large picnic table and fire ring (although the windy conditions were not favorable for a fire) completed the site. Some are not completely level, so it was good to be able to select the best site.

Bathhouse: The bath/shower house was clean, and the shower had nice hot water and good water pressure. The drainage wasn’t optimal, however, and much of the water ended up in the rest of the bathroom. The only other thing to note is that the generator for the bathhouse is VERY loud so if you are in a site close by (we were across the street and one up), you WILL hear it but thankfully, when not in use, it was quiet through most of the night.

Activities/Amenities: There is a playground and picnic shelter, and the (not very deep) cave is cool to explore (a short walk from the campground). There are a dump station and dumpster. I had good cell service (Verizon/three bars) in this campground.

Conclusion: Although this state park is right on the Ohio River, the campground is set apart from the river so you will not see the river from the campground but it is close enough to walk to the banks of the river when exploring the cave. Nice place to spend a night.

Guide to New Harmony

Cabin rentals near New Harmony, Indiana provide options for campers seeking a middle ground between tent camping and hotel stays. This southern Indiana region sits along the Wabash River at approximately 380 feet elevation, with terrain characterized by rolling hills and wooded areas. Seasonal availability varies by location, with most rental cabins operating from April through October when temperatures average 55-85°F.

What to do

Fishing at lakeside cabins: Hamilton County State Fish and Wildlife Area maintains lakeside cabins where fishing is the primary attraction. "Great fishing, 15hp motors allowed on the lake. Lake is very pretty - you could anchor your boat off your campsite," notes one visitor. Cabins here require guests to "bring your own mattress" according to recent reviews.

Explore hiking trails: Harmonie State Park features several hiking paths accessible from cabin areas. "They have a nature center in the middle of the campground that is open Thursday-Sunday in the summer," explains one camper. Another visitor mentions "very little cell phone signal" which creates a more disconnected outdoor experience.

Swimming and recreation: Scales Lake Park offers cabin rentals near swimming facilities. "There's a beach for swimming and a shower house," reports a reviewer. Another camper details additional amenities: "a beautiful lake front for swimming with water slide and diving boards. There is a boat ramp for fishing boats and kayaks."

What campers like

Peaceful location: Miles Landing Campground receives praise for its tranquil cabin setting. "Very quiet, very clean," writes one visitor, while another notes the "very spacious and far enough apart that you had room to spread out" cabin sites. The campground features "probably the cleanest, nicest shower houses I've seen."

Family-friendly environments: John James Audubon State Park offers cabin accommodations with family programming. "This campsite is more for a light camper. It is not primitive and they have lodging available," explains one visitor. Another camper appreciates that it's "never been crowded when we went which is nice for our family."

Affordability: Cabin rentals typically cost $45-120 per night depending on amenities and season. At Cave-in-Rock State Park, "the cabins looked really nice and with a view of the river." A visitor to Red Hills Lake State Park noted that while sites could be "a little unleveled," the facilities were worth it with "nice fresh gravel sites" and "lots of trails."

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Most cabin rentals have limited winter availability. The exception is Red Hills Lake State Park which offers year-round cabin rentals. "We were there in November for just a night," reports one visitor, who found "cell service was very good" despite the off-season timing.

Reservation requirements: During peak seasons (May-September), cabins book quickly. A visitor to Harmonie State Park mentions that holiday weekends "have to be reserved the day reservations open." Early booking is essential, especially for holiday weekends or fall color season in October.

Variable amenities: Cabin facilities differ significantly between parks. At Grayville KOA, a visitor found "many enjoyable amenities, family fun, food, ice cream, mini golf, full hookups and shady spots if you ask for one." Meanwhile, state park cabins typically provide more basic accommodations with shared facilities.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: When booking cabins with children, check proximity to play areas. At Rend Lake Gun Creek Campground, "showers, bathrooms and playgrounds" are located "in multiple places and convenient locations." This allows families to maintain sight lines between cabins and recreation areas.

Special events: Holiday weekends often feature family programming. One Harmonie State Park visitor reports, "They had a trunk or treat in the pool parking lot" and "a hayride in the evening for a small fee and that included making smores at the bonfire."

Petting zoo options: Scales Lake Park offers an unusual amenity for cabin campers with children. "Two playgrounds, little petting zoo for kids. Beach area with small fee," notes one visitor. Another mentions that the "park has so much to do for kids and adults."

Tips from RVers

Water access planning: Many cabin facilities share water sources with RV areas. At Miles Landing Campground, all sites have "full hookups on every site" which benefits both cabin and RV users. One visitor recommends checking whether cabins include "water access to fill up" before arrival.

Parking considerations: Some cabin areas have limited parking for additional vehicles. Cave-in-Rock State Park cabins require careful navigation as "if you are coming from the south you will have to take the ferry across the river. Sometimes there is a pretty good wait."
