    Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

    Amenities include:

    - a community fire pit

    -  game room with television

    - guest laundry

    - dump station

    - gift shop

    - pet friendly options

     -WiFi

    - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

Can be crowded, but a good park overall

We were a bit surprised that despite having a paid reservation , we still had to pay a $20 Day usage fee to enter the park, but no matter. This is a sprawling and sometimes confusing campground to find your way in. But the sites are generally shady if a bit close together. There are five facilities with showers and running water and six pit toilets. drinking water is accessible throughout the park.
The majority of sites have six person tables, though some, especially in the new 385-416 loop have little four person tables. These are also the least shaded.
Campground and facilities are clean and well maintained.
The General Store is one of the most impressively well stocked I have ever seen. Equipment, toys, tools, food souvenirs, you name it. Good dry firewood is $6.50 a bundle in the store, $7 on the honor system after hours. It burns fast, so you might want to buy more than you think. The store is open until 9:00 Friday & Saturday, but only 2;PM on Sunday and never on Monday. Keep that in mind if you're doing a 3-day weekend as we did. When checking out, look up to see the beautiful wooden canoe with wildlife inlaid wood.
Fire pits are mostly round iron with non-adjustable swing-away grills. Booking is through Indiana DNR/ Reserve America so you can see photos of the site you pick.
This was our second experience with an Indiana state park, and like our first (Pokagon, in the winter) we were impressed with the clear marking of the hiking trails (and canoe trail for that matter) there was a map and guidepost at every junction.
There's a beach, concession stand and boat rentals on Sand lake, the Park's largest. Lastly, there's a fish cleaning shed with running water outside the campground entrance that anyone in the park can use, something I wish more parks would provide.

    Twin Mills Camping Resort

    Beautiful Wooded Campground

Twin Mills is a really beautiful and quiet RV Campground, with tall trees in Northern Indiana. We frequent this location when getting RV Repairs and visiting Elkhart, the birth place of most RVs.

There are cabins and tent sites and a large lake access point with a beach area. The playgrounds seemed to be in good shape and the dumpsters were centrally located.

The park has a gate entrance for security.

There is a large pool area and basketball court.

There are several sections in the park, some more wooded and narrow sites, some are more spread out.

Cellular: T-Mobile had good signal strength and bandwidth, AT&T was not as good but still doable.

Most of the sites are full hook up, some have 30amp and some have 50amp.

Amenities: Pool Clubhouse Basketball Volleyball Picnic tables Fire rings Trash Playground Lake access Beach area Dock Cabins Tent sites

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

Great for families and group camping

If you're traveling with kids or enjoy the community of being near your fellow campers this is a great option. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat this may be a bit loud and busy. However, the many amenities are a great way to find peace with the 9 lakes, 12 trails and a beach for swimming. The lakes and connecting channels are stunning for canoes and kayaks and there is a convenient rental area. This is a campground of convenience with a very well stocked campground store with reasonable prices right next to the entrance. There is firewood and ice for sale as well as staple cooking items and cute souvenirs. The campsites are spacious and have a picnic table and fire pit at each. This campground is a great way to stay close to the fun and other campers. With so many options there is a something for everyone! Safe travels happy campers 😄

    KOA Campground Middlebury

    Decent for a quick stop

Got us in last minute when our other plans fell through. Site was only $35 for a back in water/electric. Grateful for it but wouldn’t have booked this otherwise. Site was unlevel and ran into a hill on the back end. Not much space on ether side of us. Corner lot and the rec center and basketball court was directly behind. Kids cutting through the campsite all the time.

We called several times before anyone answered and the store was clearly understaffed. Although the staff was kind and doing their best. Picnic table is on its last legs and fire ring looked like it was run over. Overall it was a little shabby but definitely not bad. Good for a place to sleep but I wouldn’t book a week here. Not many restaurant options either and also no signs for this one on the highway.

    Potato Creek State Park Campground

    Great Family Camground

We have visited this campground twice now. The first time we stayed in one of the cabins. The cabins are large, bathroom was very clean, large screened in porch. Only con was that the cabins all share one large firepit. This past weekend we stayed in a camper. The sites were a nice size. Clean sites. Bathrooms were decent for a campground in my opinion. The kids had a great time riding bikes, playing on multiple playgrounds, and playing in the lake all day.

    Cold Brook County Park

    Nice little county park!

29 campsites pretty close together with old growth trees interspersed around the campground. Fishing pier and boating, playground area, and beach. No longer has primitive camping. Some hiking trails...short. is next to a busy road, so traffic all night. Staff was great! Showers and bathrooms cleaned multiple times a day. Pet friendly. Would stay here again!

Guide to Lagrange

Cabin camping near Lagrange, Indiana offers convenient access to the Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife Area with over 11,600 acres of outdoor recreation land. Seasonal variations impact site availability, with summer months showing higher occupancy rates while spring and fall provide more booking flexibility. Area cabins range from rustic structures to more modern accommodations with varying levels of amenities.

What to do

Hiking trails: Pokagon State Park features extensive trail networks connecting to nearby nature preserves. "There are trail, beaches, boats, horses... so many things to do," notes visitor Becky N. The park maintains well-marked paths suitable for various skill levels.

Lake activities: Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday provides water recreation options on its all-sports lake. "There's an inflatable obstacle course on the lake. They have docks, pontoon rentals and a launch if you wish to bring your own boat," reports Doug A. The property includes beach access for swimming during summer months.

Winter recreation: Winter cabin stays offer different activities than summer visits. While some facilities close seasonally, Crooked Creek Campground and Cabins maintains year-round operations. "This is our normal spot for the summer. Clean restrooms, easy lake access, friendly vibes. Very quiet and laid back," says Dustin H., though many visitors appreciate the quieter off-season atmosphere as well.

What campers like

Privacy options: Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground offers varying levels of seclusion. "Nice quiet campground with lots of wildlife. Tent lots are flat and a good size. RR and showers nearby," reports Karson G. Sites are positioned to maximize space between neighbors.

Water quality: Lakes in the region maintain good swimming conditions throughout summer. "Kayaking and the beach was a huge hit with the kids," notes Jeremy C. about Chain O' Lakes State Park. Most lakes permit fishing with appropriate licensing.

Amish country access: Elkhart RV Resort by Rjourney positions visitors near cultural attractions. "Definitely loved this campground in the middle of beautiful Amish country. Staff was very friendly and helpful," writes Dusti H. Local markets and craft shops operate within short driving distance of most cabin facilities.

What you should know

Reservation timing: Peak season requires advance planning. "We reserved a spot roughly a month in advance" is commonly reported by visitors. Many facilities fill completely during holiday weekends.

Bathroom variations: Facility quality varies significantly between properties. At Ebys Pines, "Beautiful and very clean showers. Wish we could have stayed longer. Everyone friendly and kind," notes Jamie H. Always check whether bathrooms are centralized or cabin-specific.

Site selection: Choose locations based on specific needs. "There are 500+ sites, but all nicely separated and shaded. There's an inn, restaurant, cabins, boat rentals, horseback riding, bike trails, beach, toboggan run, etc.," explains Amy K. about Pokagon State Park. Corner sites typically offer more space than interior locations.

Fee structure: Additional charges may apply beyond base rates. At Ebys Pines, one visitor reported they "charged visitors $5 per person per day. And charged $5 per device per day for WiFi." Request complete fee information when booking.

Tips for camping with families

Activity planning: Pokagon State Park offers diverse recreation options. "Tons of things to do (playgrounds, lake, beach, hiking, horseback and pony rides etc)," notes Anand. Plan activities appropriate for children's ages and mobility levels.

Noise considerations: Site selection impacts sleep quality. "We were in the tent portion and it was very loud, the pit toilets did not have doors, and there were some mosquitoes. It was Memorial Day weekend which could explain the noise/busy-ness," reports Truly W. about Chain O' Lakes State Park. Mid-week stays typically offer quieter conditions.

Organized events: Many properties schedule structured activities. At Atwood Lake Campground, "Friendly people and good fishing" create an welcoming environment for families. Check event calendars when planning visits.

Tips from RVers

Site dimensions: Space limitations affect larger units. At Chain O' Lakes, "Sites are shorter and sometimes uneven. Bike trail, hiking trails, store, beach, inn, nature center," notes J C. Measure your unit before booking specific sites.

Seasonal operation: Check opening dates when planning trips. Twin Mills Camping Resort operates from April through November, while some properties maintain year-round access. Call ahead to confirm current status.

Security features: Property protections vary between locations. Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday provides "a gate entrance for security" according to Laura H. Most cabin areas implement quiet hours starting at 10:00 PM.
