    Johnny Appleseed Campground

    Looked like a ghost town

This small, well-kept Campground is a Fort Wayne city park surrounded by industrial & commercial businesses. The Park is clean with the most modern, clean shower/bath house I’ve seen. Unfortunately, the restroom is located across the street from the campground. The sites were occupied by large RVs but we only saw 2 people sitting outside - no campfires, no cooking, no campers. This was just an over night stopover for us so we didn’t care. I suppose this Campground is used by seasonal workers who just sleep & eat dinner there at the end of their workday. The Campground is never dark with streetlights and and the ambient light from surrounding businesses. I’m sure this campground serves a purpose, just not my purpose. This is definitely NOT a destination.

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

A campground with a little bit of everything for everyone ...

PSA, this was my first time camping.  EVER.  I came here with a few family member to hike and get away from the rat race of life and that's exactly what I got. An awesome 1st time experience.  My site was NOT fully shaded and was level, a plus because I slept in my vehicle.  Our camp neighbors were friendly.  So many people, kids and well behaved dogs.  The quiet hours were quiet with exception of the couple loud drunk guys who ended up laying in the road near our sites.  I thought it was funny, but my experienced camping family members not so much.  Bathroom was clean and stocked.  Didn't use the available free showers, next time.  Water water everywhere and no mosquitos.  Trails were well kept.  They do have an enclosed fish cleaning station which looked nice.  Everything is within walking distance from your campsite.  Boat & kayak rentals are available, but closed after Labor Day.  The camp store has everything and anything you would need or need including souvenirs.  My late September weekend was cooler than normal, lows in the 40's and highs in the 60's.  The campfire smoke that hung in the air like ground fog.  Not a deal breaker.  I will be back in April 2026.  Going to give the cabins a try and do some fishing.  I will come back here !

    Air conditioning in the bathrooms

Very nice campground with level sites and air conditioned bathrooms! That is amazing in the summer. They have trails that are a nice walk for the dogs and a pond to catch and release fish.

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

Can be crowded, but a good park overall

We were a bit surprised that despite having a paid reservation , we still had to pay a $20 Day usage fee to enter the park, but no matter. This is a sprawling and sometimes confusing campground to find your way in. But the sites are generally shady if a bit close together. There are five facilities with showers and running water and six pit toilets. drinking water is accessible throughout the park.
The majority of sites have six person tables, though some, especially in the new 385-416 loop have little four person tables. These are also the least shaded.
Campground and facilities are clean and well maintained.
The General Store is one of the most impressively well stocked I have ever seen. Equipment, toys, tools, food souvenirs, you name it. Good dry firewood is $6.50 a bundle in the store, $7 on the honor system after hours. It burns fast, so you might want to buy more than you think. The store is open until 9:00 Friday & Saturday, but only 2;PM on Sunday and never on Monday. Keep that in mind if you're doing a 3-day weekend as we did. When checking out, look up to see the beautiful wooden canoe with wildlife inlaid wood.
Fire pits are mostly round iron with non-adjustable swing-away grills. Booking is through Indiana DNR/ Reserve America so you can see photos of the site you pick.
This was our second experience with an Indiana state park, and like our first (Pokagon, in the winter) we were impressed with the clear marking of the hiking trails (and canoe trail for that matter) there was a map and guidepost at every junction.
There's a beach, concession stand and boat rentals on Sand lake, the Park's largest. Lastly, there's a fish cleaning shed with running water outside the campground entrance that anyone in the park can use, something I wish more parks would provide.

    Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

    Amenities include:

    - a community fire pit

    -  game room with television

    - guest laundry

    - dump station

    - gift shop

    - pet friendly options

     -WiFi

    - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

    Very pleasant

Hope, the owner, is always so friendly & helpful. The restrooms/showers are nice and clean. You can get an entire 4 wheeler dump load of wood for $20. It’s nice dry wood. When we’ve camped in the past during April & October, we got free firewood those months. There’s a nice little camp store. We were given a nice welcome packet at check-in with visitor guides for the area. They recycle also. Pool and small miniature golf course. We really enjoy camping here. We’ve camped on several different sites here. We’ve stayed on the deluxe patio sites a couple of times when they were available. They have patio table & chairs on extra wide concrete pad, gas grill, fire pit & seating area in back.

    Pokagon State Park Campground

    One of Indiana's original parks.

Pokagon was one of the first Indiana state parks, so there's some history here! One of my favorite memories is the toboggan run, which FYI, is seasonal. It's a ton of fun for the whole family. Also, in the winter, there's sledding, ice fishing and cross country skiing. There's a few trails and swimming and boating in the lake in the summer. The campground is standard and has a bathhouse and fire pits at each site (both electric and non-electric). There's a nice Inn as well, if you need a non campgroud place to stay in the winter. It's a great easy trip, even from Chicago. So, come winter or summer!

    Potato Creek State Park Campground

Big, clean and plenty to do

The park itself is rather large, and the camping area is pretty expansive as well. Bathrooms are cleanish…but they start getting a little wild as the weekend wears on. Perpetual mud and slop from the showers, but functional. The sites are roomy enough but they are a little close together. Some sites are shaded, some are open…hard to tell when booking. Not many trees to set up a hammock on site. General store was well stocked and the staff across the board were very helpful.

    Potato Creek State Park Campground

1st time, will definitely be back.

Our first time here with our pop-up. It's a beautiful park. So much nature to explore, so we'll have to come back again. Note that my four star rating is based on five stars being perfection, so I would still definitely recommend it.

Our site was purposely located close to a bathhouse, but was not too close to have any bothersome noises. The bathhouse was a bit dated, but pretty clean. Individual stall showers with inner and outer curtains. Curtains could have been a bit longer, because the inner one allowed lots of spray into the outer "dry" part of the stall.

Great playground on the east side of the first loop. Kids seem to play there for hours and enjoy riding bikes around the loops. Very well manicured grounds, including paths from the sites to the bathhouse.

Nice little store that had a little bit of everything attendants were friendly. Firewood available. Cheaper outside the park, but don't mind supporting the park. Was open till 9PM even on Sunday.

Beach was small, but seems adequate for the number of people there. Could use a little sand cleaning, but not bad. Swimming area roped off to keep boats out. Bathrooms have showers.

    Already planning our next visit!

Guide to Lagrange

Glamping in LaGrange, Indiana features diverse landscapes around Hogback Lake and adjacent waterways in Northern Indiana's lake country. The region sits at approximately 950 feet elevation with moderate humidity through camping season. Most campgrounds operate between April and October, with several offering glamping accommodations during peak summer months.

What to do

Bike the Pumpkinvine Trail: The Shipshewana Trading Place RV Park provides excellent access to the Pumpkinvine Bike Trail, a local favorite among visitors. "We enjoyed our stay, two days of riding on the Pumpkinvine Bike Trail, the Krider Nurseries World's Fair Garden, the RV museum in Elkhart and Mooey's ice cream near Middlebury," notes one camper.

Frisbee golf courses: Cade Lake County Park offers a large frisbee golf course for visitors looking for recreational activities. According to a reviewer, "This place is a nice cozy campground with a large frisbee golf course, a fishing and kayak lake, and a nice store."

Water recreation options: At Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday, families can enjoy numerous water activities. "This place was fantastic... There are lakes all around and a playground for the kids," shares a visitor. The campground features beach access, boat rentals, and swimming areas for hot summer days.

What campers like

Cultural immersion: The Shipshewana North Park Campground offers a unique cultural experience. "You can listen to the clopping of horse hooves as the Amish buggies go by," one camper notes, highlighting the authentic local atmosphere visitors appreciate.

Well-maintained parks: Campers consistently praise the cleanliness of Pokagon State Park Campground facilities. "This is a great campground. We stayed one night in a non-electrical spot. The park is beautifully maintained. The bathroom and shower facilities were clean and updated," shares one visitor.

Variety of activities: Multiple campgrounds offer numerous recreational options to keep everyone entertained. "There's 500+ sites, but all nicely separated and shaded. There's an inn, restaurant, cabins, boat rentals, horseback riding, bike trails, beach, toboggan run, etc. Tons of picnic areas and pavilions; would be a great spot for a family reunion," notes a camper about Pokagon State Park.

What you should know

Booking windows: Popular luxury camping and glamping sites fill quickly, especially at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park at Barton Lake. "Only complaint would be that if you are planning a summer weekend you have to book wayyyyy in advance due to demand," advises one camper.

Site selection matters: At some campgrounds, site location significantly impacts the experience. "RV Sites are stacked on each other. We chose 306 and it was ok by the pond. No misquitos. Our friends had 310 and there was barely room to put their awning out," shares a visitor at Ebys Pines.

Seasonal operation: Most glamping sites operate from April through October. "Visited April 4, more people than I thought, but found a spot to be by myself," notes one early-season visitor to Pokagon State Park, showing that shoulder seasons can still be busy.

Tips for camping with families

Water activities for kids: Families particularly enjoy Elkhart RV Resort by Rjourney for its kid-friendly amenities. "We enjoyed the pool. We would definitely stay again if ever in the area! Highly recommend!" remarks a family who visited the resort.

Entertainment options: Several campgrounds offer specialized activities for children. "A family fun getaway. The waterpark was a huge hit to the kids. A great way to glamp!! Love they have a smaller water park for the smaller kids too! Lots of fun activities!!" shares a visitor about Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park.

Playground access: Most LaGrange area glamping resorts feature playgrounds for children. "Tons of things to do (playgrounds, lake, beach, hiking, horseback and pony rides etc). The lodge is a nice structure but the food we sampled was mediocre," notes a camper at Pokagon State Park.

Tips from RVers

Full-hookup options: The Shipshewana Campground South Park provides convenient RV facilities. "We proceeded to pull through site 37 with FHUs. The utilities were in the center, which made it nice to dump our two black tanks in order to go to the Brinkley Service Center the next morning," shares an RVer.

Site leveling challenges: RVers should note that some sites require leveling. "Sites are shorter and sometimes uneven. Bike trail, hiking trails, store, beach, inn, nature center," cautions a visitor to Pokagon State Park.

Connectivity considerations: While glamping near LaGrange, plan for variable internet service. "We got 4 bars on Verizon. If we wanted to put out satellite, we could have as there are not many trees in the central area to block the signal," notes a camper at Shipshewana Campground South Park.
