      Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

      Amenities include:

      - a community fire pit

      -  game room with television

      - guest laundry

      - dump station

      - gift shop

      - pet friendly options

       -WiFi

      - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

Can be crowded, but a good park overall

We were a bit surprised that despite having a paid reservation , we still had to pay a $20 Day usage fee to enter the park, but no matter. This is a sprawling and sometimes confusing campground to find your way in. But the sites are generally shady if a bit close together. There are five facilities with showers and running water and six pit toilets. drinking water is accessible throughout the park.
The majority of sites have six person tables, though some, especially in the new 385-416 loop have little four person tables. These are also the least shaded.
Campground and facilities are clean and well maintained.
The General Store is one of the most impressively well stocked I have ever seen. Equipment, toys, tools, food souvenirs, you name it. Good dry firewood is $6.50 a bundle in the store, $7 on the honor system after hours. It burns fast, so you might want to buy more than you think. The store is open until 9:00 Friday & Saturday, but only 2;PM on Sunday and never on Monday. Keep that in mind if you're doing a 3-day weekend as we did. When checking out, look up to see the beautiful wooden canoe with wildlife inlaid wood.
Fire pits are mostly round iron with non-adjustable swing-away grills. Booking is through Indiana DNR/ Reserve America so you can see photos of the site you pick.
This was our second experience with an Indiana state park, and like our first (Pokagon, in the winter) we were impressed with the clear marking of the hiking trails (and canoe trail for that matter) there was a map and guidepost at every junction.
There's a beach, concession stand and boat rentals on Sand lake, the Park's largest. Lastly, there's a fish cleaning shed with running water outside the campground entrance that anyone in the park can use, something I wish more parks would provide.

      Harrison Lake State Park Campground

      Quiet place to get away

We have been here a few times. Really enjoy the secluded sites and the lake. It’s a small campground but it’s clean and quiet. Most sites don’t have water hookups but they do have electric. There isn’t much to do outside of the campground but there is a nice lake with canoe and kayak rentals. Very pet friendly and even has a dog beach.

      Twin Mills Camping Resort

      Beautiful Wooded Campground

Twin Mills is a really beautiful and quiet RV Campground, with tall trees in Northern Indiana. We frequent this location when getting RV Repairs and visiting Elkhart, the birth place of most RVs.

There are cabins and tent sites and a large lake access point with a beach area. The playgrounds seemed to be in good shape and the dumpsters were centrally located.

The park has a gate entrance for security.

There is a large pool area and basketball court.

There are several sections in the park, some more wooded and narrow sites, some are more spread out.

Cellular: T-Mobile had good signal strength and bandwidth, AT&T was not as good but still doable.

Most of the sites are full hook up, some have 30amp and some have 50amp.

Amenities: Pool Clubhouse Basketball Volleyball Picnic tables Fire rings Trash Playground Lake access Beach area Dock Cabins Tent sites

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

Great for families and group camping

If you're traveling with kids or enjoy the community of being near your fellow campers this is a great option. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat this may be a bit loud and busy. However, the many amenities are a great way to find peace with the 9 lakes, 12 trails and a beach for swimming. The lakes and connecting channels are stunning for canoes and kayaks and there is a convenient rental area. This is a campground of convenience with a very well stocked campground store with reasonable prices right next to the entrance. There is firewood and ice for sale as well as staple cooking items and cute souvenirs. The campsites are spacious and have a picnic table and fire pit at each. This campground is a great way to stay close to the fun and other campers. With so many options there is a something for everyone! Safe travels happy campers 😄

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

A campground with a little bit of everything for everyone ...

PSA, this was my first time camping.  EVER.  I came here with a few family member to hike and get away from the rat race of life and that's exactly what I got. An awesome 1st time experience.  My site was NOT fully shaded and was level, a plus because I slept in my vehicle.  Our camp neighbors were friendly.  So many people, kids and well behaved dogs.  The quiet hours were quiet with exception of the couple loud drunk guys who ended up laying in the road near our sites.  I thought it was funny, but my experienced camping family members not so much.  Bathroom was clean and stocked.  Didn't use the available free showers, next time.  Water water everywhere and no mosquitos.  Trails were well kept.  They do have an enclosed fish cleaning station which looked nice.  Everything is within walking distance from your campsite.  Boat & kayak rentals are available, but closed after Labor Day.  The camp store has everything and anything you would need or need including souvenirs.  My late September weekend was cooler than normal, lows in the 40's and highs in the 60's.  The campfire smoke that hung in the air like ground fog.  Not a deal breaker.  I will be back in April 2026.  Going to give the cabins a try and do some fishing.  I will come back here !

      Lake Hudson Recreation Area

Beautiful Nature, Dark Sky Rustic Camping

Lake Hudson is a dark sky preserve full of trees, nature and a beautiful lake. The camping sites come with an electric plug in, a nice fire ring and a picnic table. They are cute sites. Most are not by the lake. There is a dumpster. The facilities are rustic. The facilities are port a potty type with wooden walls and cement floor. No showers. A hand pump well for water. The swimming part of the lake requires a drive. The Lake is beautiful with a sand beach, no wake boating and grills. However it is rustic so there is goose poo. The woods are beautiful. There is hunting. We had heard that some people partied there but the night we were there it was quiet and people were respectful. We had a beautiful fire and dutch oven dinner. We saw one cute racoon who ran away when I reacted. We were worried about mosquitos but we only saw one.

      KOA Campground Middlebury

      Decent for a quick stop

Got us in last minute when our other plans fell through. Site was only $35 for a back in water/electric. Grateful for it but wouldn’t have booked this otherwise. Site was unlevel and ran into a hill on the back end. Not much space on ether side of us. Corner lot and the rec center and basketball court was directly behind. Kids cutting through the campsite all the time.

We called several times before anyone answered and the store was clearly understaffed. Although the staff was kind and doing their best. Picnic table is on its last legs and fire ring looked like it was run over. Overall it was a little shabby but definitely not bad. Good for a place to sleep but I wouldn’t book a week here. Not many restaurant options either and also no signs for this one on the highway.

    Guide to Angola

Cabin camping near Angola, Indiana offers diverse lodging options across several lakeside settings in the northeastern corner of the state. The region sits at approximately 1,050 feet above sea level and features over 100 natural lakes within a 10-mile radius. Winter cabin campers should prepare for average January temperatures around 15-30°F, while summer visitors can expect 60-85°F temperatures from June through August.

    What to do

Kayaking on multiple connected lakes: Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground provides access to nine connecting lakes with 23 miles of paddling routes. "There is so much to do. Between the hiking trails, boating, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and biking. You won't ever get bored," notes Amanda J. about this popular state park.

Winter toboggan run: Pokagon State Park Campground maintains a 1,780-foot refrigerated toboggan run operating from late November through February. "There's an inn, restaurant, cabins, boat rentals, horseback riding, bike trails, beach, toboggan run, etc. Tons of picnic areas and pavilions; would be a great spot for a family reunion," says Amy K.

Fishing on Hogback Lake: Many cabin locations provide direct water access for anglers. "I have kayaked extensively in this long chain of lakes that this RV park is located on and you can go on for days," mentions Charlie M. about the extensive water system accessible from Angola/Hogback Lake KOA.

Disc golf course: Cade Lake County Park & Campground offers a complete disc golf course among its amenities. "This place is a nice cozy campground with a large frisbee golf course, a fishing and kayak lake, and a nice store. For the price, it's a must camp!" says Eric M.

    What campers like

Private lakefront cabins: Many visitors appreciate cabin sites with direct water views. "We had a site right on the lake and the views in the morning and evening were absolutely gorgeous. We only stayed a couple of nights but wished we would've been here longer," shares Clint about Coldwater Lake Campgrounds.

Clean, updated facilities: Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground receives praise for its well-maintained bathhouses. "Bathroom was clean and stocked. Didn't use the available free showers, next time. Water water everywhere and no mosquitos. Trails were well kept," notes Kimberly T.

Historical music venues: Buck Lake Ranch has hosted famous country music performers since 1947. "So many legends have been on the stage at Buck Lake Ranch including Dolly Parton! This campground is great for music lovers as they have live shows on some weekends and a huge festival in September," explains adrienn S.

Year-round cabin availability: Several locations keep cabins open during winter months. "Visited April 4, more people than I thought, but found a spot to be by myself," mentions Rachel N. about early spring stays at Pokagon State Park.

    What you should know

Reservation requirements vary: Most cabin facilities require advance booking, especially during peak season. "We reserved a spot roughly a month in advance and really enjoyed our spot. Had partial shade and picnic table at our site," notes fred F. about Crooked Creek Campground and Cabins.

Cabins have different amenity levels: Heating options and bathroom access differ significantly between locations. "We were in the tent portion and it was very loud, the pit toilets did not have doors, and there were some mosquitoes. The RV sites have better bathrooms I believe," warns Truly W. about primitive facilities at Chain O' Lakes.

Seasonal closures affect activities: Many water-based amenities close after summer. "Boat & kayak rentals are available, but closed after Labor Day," reports Kimberly T. about Chain O' Lakes State Park.

Road noise at some locations: Proximity to highways can affect the camping experience. "Highway noise was terrible. So many open spaces and we're assigned a highway space," cautions Michael G. about certain sites at Angola/Hogback Lake KOA.

    Tips for camping with families

Look for campgrounds with multiple play areas: Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday offers extensive family recreation options. "They have all of the KOA amenities pool, lazy river, jump pillow, playground and dog park. Entire campground was clean and well maintained," recommends Andrew M.

Choose cabins near restrooms: When camping with children, bathroom proximity matters. "The restrooms are nice and the camp personnel are friendly. There is a dog park for walking the dog but with so much driveway I just walk the dog around the park," suggests Matt S. about Angola/Hogback Lake KOA.

Consider weekend activity schedules: Many campgrounds offer structured family events. "They have so many activities for families with their swimming pond, hiking trails, basketball court, baseball diamond, horseshoe pits and playgrounds. They offer free coffee on Saturday mornings," notes Iris A. about Camp Sack In.

Check swimming area features: Water depth and beach quality vary between locations. "They have a nice beach/swimming area, a boat launch and even a kayak launch," mentions Clint about the family-friendly water access at Coldwater Lake Campgrounds.

    Tips from RVers

Site levelness varies significantly: Some cabin areas share terrain with RV sites. "Sites are shorter and sometimes uneven," warns J C. about Pokagon State Park Campground.

Power reliability concerns: Electrical systems can be inconsistent at some locations. "Power went off and on 5-6 times in an hour. Surge suppressor was normal. No TV, plugs, microwave, etc," reports Michael G. about electrical issues at Angola/Hogback Lake KOA.

Full hookup options: Some cabin areas share infrastructure with RV sites. "Clean and large campsites, with full hook up for campers and RVs. Cade Lake can be seen from most campsites which adds to the scenery," notes Josh N. about the convenient amenities at Cade Lake County Park.

Grill availability: Some cabin rentals include cooking equipment. "Our site was perfect with everything we would need already there. The grill even had propane in it to use!" shares Ashley G. about the convenience of Angola/Hogback Lake KOA's cabin amenities.
