Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Alton, IL

St. Louis NE-Granite City KOA allows dogs in RV areas but not tent camping areas according to visitor reports. Located near Alton, approximately 12 miles southeast, this campground provides pet owners with designated dog run areas, though some visitors note these can become muddy during wet weather. Full hookup RV sites accommodate pets with concrete pads and shaded areas. The pet waste stations are regularly maintained, although one visitor mentioned finding the receptacle full during their stay. Pere Marquette State Park Campground and Horseshoe Lake State Park Campground also welcome pets with standard leash requirements.

Horseshoe Lake State Park's peaceful tent camping on Walkers Island costs $8 per day and offers natural surroundings ideal for dog walking. When visiting these campgrounds, pets must remain leashed in public areas with a standard 6-foot maximum leash length. MGM Campground, rated highly by visitors, features spacious spots surrounded by grass and trees that dog owners particularly appreciate. The catch-and-release lake provides scenic walking opportunities while exercising pets. During summer months, consider early morning or evening walks to protect paws from hot surfaces. The campgrounds typically require proof of current rabies vaccination, and most limit pets to 2-3 per site depending on size and breed.

Good location for exploring St. Louis

This campground is fairly close to downtown and very close to lots of shopping. A great place to stay to stock up on supplies before heading west. We stayed 2 nights to have a day to visit the Gateway Arch. The pool and playground seemed nice even though we didn’t use them. Nice dog park for smaller dogs. Several cabins are available along with RV sites. The tent sites are next to a river under large trees. Plenty of spaces for big rigs. Our site was no very level but nothing our auto-leveling couldn’t handle.

Nice, clean campground, level pull-through sites - ours had a paver-patio and grill, a lot of shade throughout, dog park, and a creek to explore. This was our 2nd time here. Close to Saint Louis, Six Flags, and hiking.

    St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park

    Convenient to St. Charles

Easy off I-370, campground is new and large. It is on a lake with bike trails, kayak rental, and kids splash pad. Staff were helpful. I received about 5 pieces of paper when checking in. You need a code to get into the dog park. Shopping nearby. Used this as a base to visit historic St Charles.

LEDLENDSER MH10 and KOA Route 66 review

    Campground review:

Once googling local campsites at the last minute for a weekend getaway with both dogs, we came route 66 campground. They have a dog park, rv hookup sites, electric tent sites and primitive sites. We stayed at a primitive tent site with both dogs. Site t13, which unfortunately was one of the very few camp spots with zero trees so we're unable to use our hammock. (Most of the other sites had great trees for hammock setups). Other amenities on the campground included a heated pool, bike rentals, basketball courts, a country store for firewood, supplies, and gift shop. Needless to say this was not a "roughing" it type campground. For the dogs though, we were right across from the creek to take them down to play. Also, kids were catching crawdads! Great campsite that is pet friendly and very family friendly!

    Ledlenser mh10

This headlamp first of all comes with a 7 year warrantly(must register the product)! On top of that all these features: a rechargeable battery with a USB port. Rapid focus system with 2 tough button on headlamp to adjust lighting. The strap is very easy to adjust and fit to comfort, lightweight despise the battery pack attached to the headlamp. The lighting is phenomenal! You also get a green and red additional glass lense that you can screw into the front of your lense for any activity and not disturb others with a bright white light. Me, howsoever, I was able to on this camping trip, use the headlamp to continue to play a game of cornhole... and winter, might I add.. thanks to my headlamp for optimal vision;). Included are some pictures of how bright and fitting the headlamp is. I was highly impressed! Never once did it slip... which I have struggled with in many headlamps that it seems the lamp is too heavy and slowly makes its way down your forehead. The Ledlenser stays in place and is very comfortable! Also, doesn't leave that weird band line on your head... at least I didn't experience it like I have on others. Very impressed overall!

    Lots to do

There is lots to do at this park. There is a pool, bike rentals, dog park, movie night, basketball court, and more. You can bring your RV, travel trailer, tent camp, or stay in a cabin. Most of the sites are in the shade and are fairly level. The bathrooms were clean and well maintained. They have Ele/water and Ele/water/sewer sites. It is close to train tracks, but I only heard the train once at night. It’s close to Six Flags, shopping, and restaurants. They even have a cute caboose cabin you can stay in.

    St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park

    Really nice overnight stay

We spent one night here (May 11, 2022). This is a very nice easy access CG with wide, spacious, and level pull through and back-in gravel sites (25 paved). There are a lot of activities available: archery, boating, fishing, dog park, biking (wish I brought my mtn bike), walking, playground, horseshoes and volleyball. We did not have time to visit the clubhouse and did not make use of the bathrooms or showers. It is a great base camp to visit the area. The WiFi was great as was cell phone reception. We would definitely stay here again.

Guide to Alton

Camping areas near Alton, Illinois sit along the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers at an elevation of approximately 420 feet. The region experiences humid continental climate with hot summers where temperatures frequently exceed 90°F and mild winters. Most campgrounds in the area open between April and October, with several offering year-round access despite occasional flooding concerns along the riverfront areas.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Pere Marquette State Park Campground features multiple fishing spots around its lake. "There are a lot of eagles feeding in the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers which meet at the park. The Lewis & Clark expedition started nearby," notes Joel R., who visited the park.

Historic exploration: St. Charles historic district is accessible from Sundermeier RV Park via a connecting trail. "You can literally be parked right at the Katy Trail. Through the gate at the rear of the campground, and you can bike for miles. Easy ride in to St. Charles a wonderful historic river town on the Missouri River," reports Cheryl K.

Lakeside recreation: The 370 Lakeside Park offers multiple water activities according to visitors. "The park/campground rents paddleboats, kayaks, and canoes in addition to different kinds of bikes. There is a walking trail around the lake (4+ miles). There is fish in the lake and you are allowed to fish," explains Mats who stayed at the park.

What campers like

Peaceful environment: The primitive camping at Walker's Island offers tranquil surroundings. "Peaceful tent camping on Walkers Island at $8 per day," says ML W. who camped at Horseshoe Lake State Park Campground. Another visitor, Travis, added, "Horseshoe Lake is one of my most favorite park in the STL and surrounding areas. First off absolutely beautiful land and peace is easily achieved."

Clean facilities: Many campers note the well-maintained bathhouses at several campgrounds. "The grounds are clean and pleasant, if a bit sparse with little shade. The staff are kind and helpful. Water and electric worked fine. Each site has a fire pit and picnic table. Trash and recycling receptacles are huge and convenient," reports Suzie S. about St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park.

Dining options: On-site food service is available at select locations. Joel R. mentions that Pere Marquette State Park "has one of the best fried chicken dinners around on Sunday." At Cahokia RV Parque, Lee T. recommends, "Do NOT miss the BBQ place in the parking lot... fantastic food and a 10% discount for park customers."

What you should know

Limited shade: Several campgrounds lack mature trees. "This campground is right across the street from the Mississippi. Predominantly RV campers and families, along with some local fisherman," notes Mike M. about Pere Marquette State Park. At St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park, Suzie S. mentions, "The grounds are clean and pleasant, if a bit sparse with little shade. This will change over the subsequent years, however, as there are many relatively newly planted trees."

Noise considerations: Several campgrounds experience transportation noise. "When you first pull down the road you'll be worried you're going to end up in the train yard, but the campground is hidden and actually really quiet and secluded," says Jessica N. about St. Louis NE-Granite City KOA. At Sundermeier RV Park, Brian A. notes, "You are on the final approach for the airport, so I'll could be a lil noisy for some."

Weather impacts: Seasonal flooding affects some campgrounds. Annie C. reports about 370 Lakeside Park: "One of the downsides to this location is that it is prone to flooding. It was out of commission for most of the summer of 2019 as the entire area was flooded. But the City of St Peters did a great job getting this place back to usable with new sod, a new bathhouse, and some general sprucing up."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several parks offer play equipment for children. "My kids loved the jumping pillow at the park. Minimal playground but they still enjoyed it," reports Sarah S. who visited St. Louis NE-Granite City KOA with her family. At St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park, Joseph F. shares, "This park is beautiful. Located about 25 minutes from St Louis. They have paddle boats and bikes and group bikes for rental. Located right next to a lake with a lot of RV and tent camping spots. Kids had a blast riding bikes."

Budget-friendly options: For families watching costs, primitive camping offers savings. At Horseshoe Lake State Park, WanderlustDu0 notes, "The campground is relatively small but has great sites to camp. Very private and clean. 5 ⭐ in my opinion simply because of the overnight price and privacy." Travis confirms, "Self service pay system makes it simple, easy, and fast. Camping can be reserved but no need. Just pick your spot go to the office building, and fill out the form, pay and slide in envelope and drop in box."

Dog-friendly areas: For families camping with pets, MGM Campground provides spacious sites. "Nice little lake (catch and release I believe). Surrounded by nature, lots of grass and trees, great for dog owners. Spacious spots," says K, who stayed at this dog friendly campground near Alton. The campground's natural setting provides ample space for exercising pets.

Tips from RVers

Site selections: When making reservations, consider specific site features. At Cahokia RV Parque, Lee T. advises, "The picnic tables and fire rings are nice additions and the lots appear to be level (ours was.) We didn't have any trouble backing our 38 ft travel trailer in either." At St. Louis NE-Granite City KOA, James P. suggests, "Sites are mostly level. Entrance to campground is tight, swing wide."

Hookup placement: Pay attention to utility locations when setting up. Josh F. notes about Casino Queen RV Park, "Utilities are set up weird on all sites - Water and electric are at the very rear of the site by the sewer, so you will need a decent sized hose to reach if your water intake is in the front of your camper."

Security features: Several pet friendly camping locations near Alton offer added security measures. At Cahokia RV Parque, Kelsey R. mentions, "There was after hours check in! But also a so friendly staff in the office. Beautiful coded bathrooms with showers. They were heated and warm and very well marked." Similarly, Greg S. notes about Casino Queen RV Park, "Reservations are online and they email you the gate code and WiFi code. Security is proactive in patrols and are friendly and helpful."
