    Venture River RV park

Quiet Off-Season Stop with Big Sites and Lake Views

We called for reservations on the way into Venture River RV Park and had no problem getting the site we wanted since it was off-season and mid-week. We were told the office would be closed and that we would receive an informational email with details like the Wi-Fi code, but we did not; not a big deal for an overnight, especially since we used our T-Mobile Home Internet. We selected back-in Site 39 with full hookups, which turned out to be an easy back-in along the small lake. The site was fairly level and we were impressed with the large yard area that even included a wooden bench swing. Utilities were centered, though the electric pedestal sat toward the rear and required about 35 feet of cord for our rig. Water pressure was very good and we used a reducer. We picked up two bars on both Verizon and T-Mobile. There are not many trees, so satellite should work well, and spacing is decent for this type of campground, especially between Sites 38 and 39. The park sits on a lake with the Venture River water park across the way, and we expect it would be very popular during the summer season. There is a restroom building with shower stalls toward the back that has seen better days. No laundry and no formal dog area, but there is plenty of room to walk pets. During this quieter time of year, this made a very good overnight stop on our way back to our home base near St. Louis.

    Jackson Falls

Great spot if you have the right equipment!

Our family had a great time camping here! The road leading into the campsite is mostly gravel with a few rough patches. There are a few shallow creek crossings to reach the more remote spots (water levels may vary depending on rainfall).

4x4 isn’t necessarily required, but I’d highly recommend it—along with a high-clearance vehicle. We brought our Jeep Wrangler, and it handled everything like a champ. We didn’t even need to engage 4x4 the entire way in.

There are a few campsites you can access without crossing the creeks, but the dispersed site we stayed at was surprisingly clean. We only found a couple small pieces of trash—otherwise, it was spotless. Previous campers left some firewood and kindling near the rock fire ring, and we made sure to do the same for the next group.

We camped during the weekdays, and it was nice and quiet. As we were leaving on Friday, more people were starting to show up, so I’d assume weekends get pretty busy. That said, most campers didn’t go past the first creek, so the farther back you go, the fewer people you’ll run into.

One thing to note: I have Verizon, and I was on SOS the entire time—so don’t expect reliable service out there if you have Verizon.

    Jackson Falls

    Decent place to stay

There is tent camping in the area of the bath house that doesn’t require any creek crossing. Now, getting to the more remote spots can be sketchy if you have a small or very loaded vehicle. There are two small creeks to cross and are somewhat rough to get through. I made it through in my minivan, but dragged through the second creek.

There are hiking trails that run through, but that’s about all I can say about that.

I had no Verizon cell service unless I walked about 2/10 of a mile up a hill to an opening and only then I could make a phone call, but I couldn’t access the Internet.

    Touch of Nature Education Center

Amazing experience at Touch of Nature Education Center!

I had an amazing experience at Touch of Nature Education Center! As a student who loves exploring the outdoors, I found the facilities to be very educational and fun at the same time. I am glad I chose this destination after a hard study year. With the help of tutors (check mysupergeek review) and their professional guidence I finished my study year successfully! And with the help of Touch of Nature Education Center, I recharged fully for the next study year!

The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, making it a great place to learn about nature while enjoying camping and outdoor activities. It’s a perfect spot for students to connect with nature, learn new skills, and take a break from studying. Highly recommended for anyone looking to combine education with outdoor adventure!

Pharoah - Garden of the Gods Rec Area Campground

Who knew places like this exist back east!?

This is a stunning but small campground on top of a crazy high ridge surrounded by cliffs. I had no idea landscapes like this existed in Illinois and was pleasantly surprised. The campground was super clean, though it seemed like everything was shut down for the season. It was a pleasant surprise.

Tween the Lakes RV Park & Campground

    Easy to Access

We are traveling in a 45 ft fifth wheel. This campground was easy to access, we did not hear any traffic noise, and the campground is in a valley, making it pretty quiet. We really enjoyed the trails next door to the river, great hiking, and walking the dogs.

Crab Orchard Lake Crab Orchard NWR

    Beautiful spot but ...$$

Don't get fooled! We have the America the beautiful pass and she charged us $35 because she said it was up to her discretion to charge full price on the weekends. What a joke!

Guide to Equality

Camping opportunities near Equality, Illinois extend throughout Shawnee National Forest at elevations ranging from 400 to 1,000 feet. The region's terrain features sandstone formations, dense woodlands, and numerous waterways that create diverse camping environments. Fall and spring typically offer the most comfortable camping conditions with moderate temperatures, while summer humidity levels frequently exceed 80%.

What to do

Hiking at Garden of the Gods: Visit the unique rock formations along the observation trail, offering scenic views across the forest. "The formations are amazing!! We love to hike here in the fall when it's cooler outside and when the leaves are changing it's absolutely beautiful," notes a visitor to Pharaoh - Garden of the Gods Rec Area Campground.

Rock climbing: Jackson Falls serves as the primary climbing destination in southern Illinois with over 60 established routes on sandstone bluffs. A climber mentioned that "Beautiful location. Definitely off the beaten path. There was another group of campers but they camped on the trail," when visiting Jackson Falls.

Water activities: Pounds Hollow Recreation Area includes a swimming beach and fishing opportunities on its 25-acre lake. "A 2 mile loop road goes around the whole campground and down to a beach access point for a gorgeous lake. That was a perfect little walk with the dog. Spectacular," according to a camper at Pine Ridge.

What campers like

Natural privacy: Many campsites offer substantial spacing between sites, providing a sense of seclusion. At Pine Ridge Campground, a visitor observed that "The rustic sites are well spread out so they feel very private. The hookup sites were closer together and did not look as well spaced."

Affordability: Most campgrounds in the region maintain low fees compared to other recreational areas. One camper at Camp Cadiz Campground mentioned it was a "Great alternative" for those looking to avoid crowded areas, adding, "Motorcycle camping across America and I wanted to see Garden of the Gods. What I didn't want was to camp on top of someone else."

Swimming holes: The region features several natural swimming areas beyond the developed beaches. A visitor to Bell Smith Springs Recreation Area shared: "There is a spring/large swimming hole, with a few places to jump off of, but check with the locals to make sure the water is deep enough. Water levels were low when we were there."

What you should know

Cell service limitations: Reception varies dramatically throughout the region. At Saline County State Conservation Area, a camper noted, "We had no cell service, although a quick trip to the ridge behind the campsite (1-2 minute drive)" would restore connectivity.

Water availability: Many campgrounds have limited potable water sources. At Pine Ridge Campground, a camper warned "the drinking water pump is broke so you must bring your own water."

Seasonal pest management: Ticks and poison ivy are common throughout the area. A visitor to Garden of the Gods mentioned, "We camped in the backcountry along the River to River trail adjacent to Garden of the Gods. The camping area we found was great, about 7 miles down the River to River trail, but there was poison ivy everywhere along the trail."

Site reservation systems: Most campgrounds operate on a first-come basis, requiring early arrival for preferred spots. At Pharaoh Campground, a camper advised: "Only downside is that there are only 12 sites, and they are first come, first serve... so you might want to have a second option on a weekend."

Tips for camping with families

Beach access: Choose campgrounds with swimming options during summer months. A visitor to Cave-in-Rock State Park shared: "I have been coming here for a really long time. My parents always brought me and my two younger brothers here since we were very young. We would buy fresh caught catfish right here and have a great picnic with all the trimmings."

Playground facilities: Some campgrounds offer dedicated play areas for children. At Cave-in-Rock State Park, facilities include a playground near the shower house and a pond located behind it.

Educational opportunities: Many recreation areas include interpretive trails explaining local geology and ecology. One visitor to Redbud Campground noted: "We found some beautiful hiking and water holes," making it an excellent destination for families seeking both recreation and learning opportunities.

Tips from RVers

Electric hookups: For RVs requiring power, sites with electrical service are limited in number and often fill quickly. A camper at Fiedlerland RV Park and Campgrounds reported, "FHU & water & electric sites. Shower house too," making it one of the few options with full hookups in the area.

Site leveling: Many campgrounds feature uneven terrain requiring leveling blocks. At Pine Ridge Campground, an RVer mentioned, "Trying out my recently purchased 17' clipper travel trailer. Loved the area and the campsites are very roomy, especially for a small camper. The left loop has power 50/30/20 amp hook ups but no water or sewer on the campsite."

Road conditions: Access roads to some campgrounds can be challenging for larger rigs. A Camp Cadiz visitor warned that "It's down a gravel road a bit but nothing too hard to find. The spaces are wide open and big for multiple tents."
