The park features level pull-through sites that accommodate larger motorhomes and provides easy highway access from I-57 and I-74. Prairie Pines Campground in Rantoul contains spacious sites with full hookups, picnic tables, and meticulously maintained grounds beneath scattered mature trees. Tin Cup RV Park in Mahomet and Kickapoo State Recreation Area provide additional options for RV travelers, with the latter offering both 30-amp electric sites and primitive camping areas. "Our reserved site was level with plenty of space between campers, shade trees, and we loved the dog run too," noted one visitor to D & W Lake.

Throughout the region, dump stations are available at most parks, with Kickapoo State Recreation Area and Prairie Pines both offering this service for guests. Cell service varies across campgrounds, though most report adequate Verizon coverage near the more populated areas. Several parks remain open year-round, including Kickapoo State Recreation Area, Prairie Pines, and Gibson City South Park Municipal Campground. Proximity to Interstate 57 makes D & W Lake particularly convenient for overnight stays, though highway noise may be noticeable at sites closest to the road. Bo Wood

    Campground with all the comforts

The Forest Bo Wood Recreation area has grown each year since I first camped there in 1979.

In 2017 it has 150 camping sites, a boat ramp, fish cleaning station, several picnic areas and a bait shop at the entrance on Illinois Route 32 4 miles South of Sullivan. The camp sites all have parking space for a big rig and one vehicle. There are some tent only sites but most have been converted to at least 30 amp electric sites with water hookups near the site. Many lake side sites are available, some years back there was a problem with the bank, but that has been dealt with.

Bath rooms and shower houses are very clean and there is good bank fishing near the pavilion at the turn around at the west end of the area. There is a marina just 1 mile South and across the bridge another ½ mile is the Sullivan beach. Just 1 more mile South is a Rosatti's pizza located in a gas station with a liquor store. Rossati's delivers pizza's to the 2 campgrounds that are this close to the business. People that love the comforts of home while camping love this campground, so it fills up in the spring and summer months.

All sites are spacious and include a picnic table, lantern stand, fire pit with grill grate and some have added camp stove stands. I find that October camping at Bo Woods most agreeable with less people tent camping and less boat traffic on the lake. The fishing this time of year is also very good.

    Friends Creek Campground

    Secluded and Cozy

We stayed here during our travels from Kansas to Indiana. While we only stayed one night, it was long enough to know that should we travel nearby again-this will be our stopping point. Easy to access from the highway yet while in the park, we experienced pure bliss and quiet. Spacious sites and an abundant amount of shade made this stay even better! The camp hosts do an excellent job as the grounds and bathhouse were all immaculate! These are electric only sites however there are several water spigots to fill the tank prior to parking. For ease, there are even potable water spigots at the dump station and the bathhouse as well. Our site was fairly level and easy to maneuver into. For reference, we have a 34’ fifth wheel. When reserving, note that there are a handful of 50 amp sites, several 30 amp sites and tent sites available.

    Friends Creek Campground

    Nice rural camping

General: 40-site campground with three non-electric and the rest are either 30 or 50-amp electric. Several water spigots are sprinkled throughout the campground.

Site quality: All sites are gravel and level. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. The sites are spaced a decent amount of distance apart and with the many trees, it did not feel crowded, despite being almost full when we were there.

Bath/Shower: Very clean with soap, paper towels, and a shelf for toiletries. Did not use the shower but it looked clean as well.

Activities/Amenities: There are two well-marked and well-maintained trails plus a playground and basketball hoop. There is also a historic schoolhouse, and guided tours are available by calling. Before leaving the next morning, I enjoyed a walk on the two trails. There is a dump station and potable water.

The campground was almost completely full on a Friday at the end of October yet very quiet.

    Hawthorn County Park

    Great Park

This is a Great Park, my wife and I camp here all the time. Large sites, because they are very wooded lots of shade, not far from downtown, also close to shopping (i.e. Walmart, Meijer). Lots to do in the park as well, fishing, archery, bike riding, canoe/kiak dock, and lots of very nice trails for hiking/running. They've also just updated their campsites, pull throughs have 30/50 amp electric. Some sites have both water and electric hookup and a view of the lake from your site. If you ever have a chance to visit I highly recommend it.

    Turkey Run Canoe & Camping

    Close Quarters

The manager Tina and her husband are great people but the camp sites are to close together and we would not camp here again. The sites are difficult to get into and although they allow one car on the site there is barely room for that one car. The electric is shared with another site which could be a problem if you have the same type of service since there is only one 50 amp, one 30 amp, and one 20 amp service per hook up. There is portable water at the entrance but the road coming and going to the campsite is only wide enough for one rig and you will block traffic while you are filling up. The campsite is backed up to a major highway so it is loud by nature. We choose to enjoy our stay but will not be back. I hope this helps you!

    Turkey Run State Park Campground

    Terrific campground and state park

We stayed here this weekend and had a terrific time. The weather was very hot but there is a river to tube and canoe in to keep you cool. We stayed at site #35. It is in a very quiet, off the main road, in a circle, in full shade. It’s is very close to the restroom but a distance from the camp store and dumpster. The site was clean and well equipped with a fire ring and picnic table. The site is very uneven. It definitely sloops to the back corner. It’s was difficult to level our camper but we got it in the end. The site was huge but given the unevenness it would be difficult for tents. The campground is family friendly and was quiet at night. There is a lot to do at this state park. We hiked the #3 and #5 trails and it took us about 2 hours. It was very busy but everyone was very polite. It was a great stay all around.

Guide to Homer

The Homer, Illinois area offers several RV campgrounds within 20-30 miles of the village. Most sites sit on flat terrain between 600-700 feet elevation with numerous small lakes created from reclaimed strip mines. Summer temperatures typically average 85°F with high humidity, while spring and fall camping seasons offer more moderate conditions.

What to do

Lake activities at Clinton Lake: Clinton Lake State Recreation Area features unusually warm lake water due to discharge from the nearby nuclear plant, making it ideal for swimming. "The lake is surprisingly warm. No dogs allowed on the beach. The sites were spacious, and ours had a path to the lake," notes Melissa B. The park includes a beach area with a $2 entry fee open from 10am-7pm.

Hiking at Turkey Run State Park: About 90 minutes east near Marshall, Indiana, this park offers unique canyon and stream-bed hiking trails. "We hiked Trail 3 with our dog, but we cut off early before the ladders using Trail 10. Our dog did pretty well in the section of Trail 3 before the ladders, and be prepared to get wet," advises Samantha S. The suspension bridge across Sugar Creek provides another point of interest.

Water activities near Kickapoo State Recreation Area: Located about 30 miles east of Homer, this park offers multiple lakes and streams. "Depending on what you would like this campground has a little bit of everything. There are camp sites that are walk to for some more distance from others, a lot of close drive to spots, RV, and a lot of close boat camping sites. The park itself has a lot of trails to explore and a few lakes to fish at. It is also a local spot to tube," explains Jennifer S.

What campers like

Affordable options at Gibson City South Park Municipal Campground: Located about 20 miles northwest of Homer, this small city-run campground offers basic amenities at budget prices. "This is a great city run campground attached to a block sized city park. 30 amp and water at each site. The park has restrooms, with showers. You only need to grab a key from the police department. There is a dump station on site and large dumpster. Supermarket, restaurants and gas station with in a few blocks... All for $10 a night," reports Cowboy W.

Privacy levels at different campgrounds: Moraine View State Recreation Area offers varied camping experiences. "Upon finding the rustic tent sites, we'd wished we'd known about that area before going. Those were still a little close together but were at least wooded and you could walk from your car. The dispersed camping sites were the closest to what I'd been used to coming from New Hampshire, but it was more of a hike than I would be looking for," explains Ryan M.

Clean facilities at Prairie Pines Campground: Located in Rantoul, about 15 miles northeast of Homer, this campground receives high marks for cleanliness. "Large very clean bathhouse. Several small playgrounds and swingsets scattered about. The grounds are meticulously maintained, and the small number of permanent residents also have maintained their 5th wheels and Motorhomes well," shares Jennifer B.

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Several campgrounds remain open year-round but with limited services. "Had practically the whole campground to ourselves. Water was turned off for winter which wasn't entirely clear. The RV fill was shutdown too. Water option we're the lake or a 30 min drive into town for bottled. Not a big deal but something to be prepared for," notes Matthew I. about Clinton Lake State Recreation Area.

Reservation requirements: Holiday weekends fill quickly at many parks. "I would highly recommend this campground. It is close to the main highway, but far enough to not be noticeable. Sites are level and in good condition. Owner greets you on entering and then guides you to your site," advises Dave P. about D & W Lake RV Park.

Wildlife awareness: Several campgrounds report active wildlife, particularly at night. "As some other reviews stated, watch out for the raccoons. Those guys are not afraid of anything," warns Samantha S. about Turkey Run State Park.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Many RV campgrounds in the Homer area include children's play areas. "There's plenty of grass, Fire Pits, Playgrounds and a Dog Park. Wonderful campground and only about 10 min from downtown," notes Luna L. about D & W Lake RV Park.

Beach options: For families seeking water activities, Clinton Lake offers an accessible swimming beach. "The good: swim beach is not right in campground but nearby. $3 entry for beach. The RV campground is on the water, book far enough in advance for a waterfront site. You can kayak or fish from campground. Sites all seemed flat and most were shady. There's a playground by bathrooms which have showers," shares Sarah M.

Entertainment options: Some areas offer unique attractions beyond the campgrounds. "Gibson City has a great drive in movie theater and German Restaurant. Gibson is about 20 minutes from the camp ground," notes Debbie B., highlighting family-friendly activities near Moraine View State Park.

Tips from RVers

Site selection and leveling: RV sites in the area vary considerably in levelness. "Our site was very uneven. It definitely sloops to the back corner. It's was difficult to level our camper but we got it in the end. The site was huge but given the unevenness it would be difficult for tents," shares Michelle M. about Turkey Run State Park.

Access considerations at Tin Cup RV Park: Located near Mahomet, about 25 miles west of Homer, this park offers easy highway access. "Super nice owners of this driving range with campsites. It's extremely close to the popular Lake of the Woods Forest preserve. We've camped here in tents with no problems, but it is mainly for RV stop overs from I74," explains Marisa A.

Electrical options: Electric hookup capabilities vary across campgrounds. "All sites are electric at Turkey Run. $23 per night. The campground is located in a mature tree woods, so some sites are not as level as others," notes Joel R. Most RV campgrounds near Homer offer 30-amp service as standard, with some parks like Prairie Pines and D & W Lake providing 50-amp options.
