Best RV Parks & Resorts near Gurnee, IL

Several RV parks surround Gurnee, Illinois, providing year-round options for motorhome travelers. Northwoods RV Resort in Garden Prairie offers 278 spacious sites with full hookups including 30/50 amp service, making it big-rig friendly with freshly laid gravel pads. Lehmans Lakeside RV Resort in Marengo features full hookup sites with 50 amp electrical service, water, and sewer connections, accommodating larger RVs with pull-through access. NAVSTA Great Lakes RV Campground provides 50 amp hookups and sewer connections but lacks drinking water and sanitary dump stations. "The site was 60 ft, but the whole site was not concrete. We were there for one night, it rained and the whole site had puddles around it," noted one RV camper about the naval station's campground, highlighting the importance of checking pad materials before booking.

Seasonal availability varies across the region's RV campgrounds. While Northwoods and Lehmans operate year-round, Cliffside Park Campground in nearby Caledonia, Wisconsin is only open from April 15 to October 15. Most parks require reservations, especially during summer months when Chicago-area RV sites fill quickly. Cell service is generally reliable throughout the area, though Wisconsin State Fair RV Park visitors report variable WiFi quality. Pet-friendly policies are common at most locations, with designated dog areas at several parks. Dump stations can become congested during peak checkout times, with one Cliffside Park visitor reporting "the wait to use it was over an hour." For convenience, Love's RV Hookup in Hampshire offers just 4 sites but includes sanitary dump facilities and propane refill services for travelers needing quick overnight accommodations.

    Northwoods RV Resort

New Campground Scent Emanates From this Freshly Minted RV Outpost

My first impression when I first arrived here was the overwhelming scent of a newly minted campground, what with the freshly laid gravel, the mint condition security gates, finely manicured and recently raked greenery (as it was October when we visited, it might be better described as brownery) surrounded by a fairly decent gated enclosure lined with perfectly pruned tall towering oaks. Upon arrival, you’ll find what looks to be a brand-spanking new log cabin office on the right after passing a seemingly freshly-minted activities center / community lodge complete with in-ground heated swimming pool and jacuzzi on the left.

Amenities? As you could guess, this pet-friendly 60-acre RV resort has all the attractions in spades from pickleball, playgrounds, volleyball, log pergola patio, full hook-ups (30 / 50 amp electric, water & sewage), picnic tables, fire pits, BBQ grills, wagon rides, river access, picnic areas, bathhouses w/ showers & restrooms, cable TV WiFi (pretty poor connection though), gaga ball, game room, community room, billiards table, playground, wet bar, tabletop shuffleboard, community living room with large screen TV, DVD player w/ DVD library, clubhouse, dog park, horseshoes, hot tub, covered pavilions with picnic tables, catch & release ponds, inflatable water toys, jumping pillow, laundr-O-mat, propane refueling station and dump station.

Insider’s tips? Here’s a handful: (1) This place isn’t EZ to find – for some reason, if you plug the campground into your GPS, you’ll literally be on the wrong side of the tracks, where you will arrive at a dead end with a sign that says you are in the wrong place and that you’ll need to double-back, cross the train tracks heading north and turn right just before arriving to High Road School of Belvidere (so if you see a school, you’ve gone too far); (2) You will want to take note that yes, you actually cross train tracks to get to this campground, so if you’re sharp, you’re going to want to ensure you haven’t booked a site right next to where trains will shoot through every few hours, this specifically means avoiding sites #E1-#E5 and #FS23-#FS36 as well as #FE1-#FE20; (3) If you’re a tent camper, you can certainly stay here, but you will want to note that this is very much an RV outpost; (4) The best sites IMHO are those on the northernmost perimeter, as far away from the train tracks as you can get and that also border the Kishwaukee River with sites #S9-#S20 being excellent, as well as #S25-#S81, which are equally amazing; (5) If you are planning on using that amazing pool that you saw as you came in, make sure you call management a good day or two before you come in to ensure that they turn on the heater – when we were there for 2 days, by the time we left, the pool was still too cold to go for a dip; and (6) When you grow weary of trying to conjure up a meal from the depths of your Cordova roto-molded cooler and want to venture out to try some local fare, just a short walk into the nearby town is Garden Prairie Café, which has a very simple menu offering no shortage of fried everything (fish, shrimp, chicken, etc.) and then there’s Pleasant Street Tavern, but that’s mostly cheap national beers and frozen pizza fare, so if you want something a bit more substantive, head west of here to Miles Bar N’ Grill that serves up typical Midwestern fare like cheese curds, pork tenderloin, Italian beef and a variety of fried fish like blue gill, cod and catfish.

    Happy Camping!

Big Foot Beach State Park Campground

nice state park with big sites and small beach

Nice large sites. gravel spot for arc/trailer. fire pit and picnic table. trails for hiking are nice, but the overall camping area isn’t very big. 100 sites only. 30 with electric. this was the first time all season that the bugs Annoyed us. the beach is about 10 feet of sand off a busy road and is not pet friendly. nice spot to stay if you want to avoid paying lake Geneva prices for a room.

    Happy Acres Kampground

    Great for families

Staff was polite and helpful. They escort you to your spot. They hand out activity sheets for the weekend. Petting zoo, camp store, pool, lake/pond for swimming and fishing. Cell signal for ATT just one bar. No internet. Lots of full time residents. Lots of activities for kids. Pet friendly. They charge extra if you have visitors.

    Wisconsin State Fair RV Park

    Really Great City Park

The quality of most city parks, especially on the east side, is abhorrent simply because they can be. I always have low expectations when I enter a city that basically has one option for RVs.

That being said, this is one of the best I’ve been to. Granted, it features things you would expect from a city park: cramped spaces, lots of noise, high nightly rates. But we lucked out getting one of the bigger spots.

Pros: LOCATION, Good wifi, great signal, friendly staff, lots of washers and dryers with a change machine, will accept and hold packages for guests.

Cons: The sewage system is strange at this park. We couldn’t reach ours during our stay and a camper had blocked the dump station so we pulled through in a vacant spot to dump. The pipe is highly elevated, making the process more hands-on than one would like. Bathrooms could have been cleaner, but I mostly blame guests for not picking up after themselves. The automated site selection process, which many have mentioned, is frustrating. I received six emails between Mar-Jun indicating they switched my spot. I noticed they placed a lot of large fifth wheels in tiny back in spaces when plenty pull throughs were available. Wonky system.

    Northwoods RV Resort

    Good Company but Overpriced

Took our new to us Pop Up Camper to this resort during Labor Day weekend on her maiden voyage. Was surrounded by awesome people in their big rigs but not once made us feel inferior or less than for not having an RV at an RV resort. Pros:

    • Activities provided by the campsite
    • lots of room and not overcrowded since they dont book the whole campground (manager said so)
    • close to Chicago
    • friendly campers and seasonals

Cons: -Hard to find (GPS takes you to a school parking lot, the campsite is behind it) -Bathhouses need major upgrade and cleaning (seems neglected by the river sites)

    • Very Very Pricey even for a holiday weekend.
    • Pool was not heated (confirmed by a seasonal that it is indeed a heated pool but wasnt turned on)
    • Staff could be a bit more customer friendly

Kettle Moraine Southern Unit — Kettle Moraine State Forest-Southern Unit

    Ottawa Lake Campground

You can camp year around in this campground. Most recent 2 times were winter camping. No host so buying wood is an issue, but pick a site on the edge and there is more than enough free. Bring a saw. Nice place for solitude. No rowdies in winter. Close to hiking. 10 minutes from a town if needed.

Ottawa Lake Campground — Kettle Moraine State Forest-Southern Unit

Great spot for hiking Kettle Moraine

Campsites are kept up and quite clean. Some have a beautiful view of lake. Some water fountains did not work, however sinks were always working. So many little trails all throughout the campsite. Family friendly (parks, beach, pet friendly)

    Lehmans Lakeside RV Resort

    Felt like a trailer park

A pull through style RV park. Great if you have a toy hauler style camper, but if you're used to boondocking/ dispersed camping. Very very few spots with shade and trees. Felt like a trailer park not camping.

    NAVSTA Great Lakes RV Campground

    Short stop

It was a small RV park had a concert pad but not big enough for a 43 ft motor home. The site was 60 ft, but the whole site was not concrete. We were there for one night, it rained and the whole site had puddles around it. I do understand that it is a RV site but we stayed at others that were not concrete pad and did not flood this much. It was extremely muddy. Water was very. None of the sites had sewage, the dump station was about a mile down the road. They have a few 50 amp lots. We did not have one. The site had I would call it an out house. I did not see a bath house with showers. The out house only had a toilet, no sink for hand washing. The location was right on the water so that was nice. Other than that I was not impressed.

Guide to Gurnee

Camping options near Gurnee, Illinois span throughout Lake County and into neighboring Wisconsin counties. Most Gurnee area campgrounds operate between April and October, with limited winter availability. Elevations remain relatively flat across the region, ranging from 580-780 feet above sea level with proximity to both Lake Michigan and the Chain O'Lakes system providing water-based recreation opportunities. Local rv parks near Gurnee range from basic facilities to resort-style campgrounds with various amenities.

What to do

Boating access: Chain O'Lakes State Park provides direct water access with boat rentals available. "There is a bait shop and place to rent both a paddle boat and one with a small motor. The fox river runs through the park as well," notes a visitor to Mud Lake East.

Lake Michigan views: Naval Station Great Lakes offers waterfront camping with Lake Michigan vistas. A camper reports, "Oh. Wonderful views of the lake and way close to the beach on base." Naval Station's location provides water activities despite limitations in other amenities.

Trail exploration: Multiple hiking paths traverse the area with varying difficulty levels. Sycamore RV Resort features "a nice walking path around the two ponds," according to a recent visitor. The ponds also provide fishing opportunities though water levels fluctuate seasonally.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Northwoods RV Resort in Garden Prairie offers 278 sites with ample space between neighbors. A camper notes, "The sites are pretty big. The campground is not congested at all. The people are very nice. Everyone waves to everyone," showing the community atmosphere at Northwoods RV Resort.

Clean facilities: Wisconsin State Fair RV Park maintains well-kept amenities despite urban location. A reviewer states, "Very nice, clean facilities, but it is basically a large parking lot with a band of grass on the far right as you enter," giving a realistic picture of the Wisconsin State Fair RV Park setting.

Lakeside relaxation: Lehmans Lakeside RV Resort provides water recreation with beach areas. "They have a huge lake with paved paths that we were able to walk the first night (not raining) and the beach looks like it will be fun to enjoy in the summer," writes one visitor to Lehmans Lakeside RV Resort.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most area campgrounds require advance booking, especially during summer months. Cliffside Park Campground operates from April 15 to October 15 with split reservation systems: "Sites 1-41 are available for first come if not previously reserved. The fee is $30/night plus $12 if you choose to reserve a site."

Pet restrictions: Some parks limit where dogs can walk. At Cliffside Park Campground, "Dogs are only allowed in the campground and not permitted to walk around other parts of the park," which can limit recreational options for pet owners.

Weather preparedness: The Chicago region experiences variable weather patterns, particularly in spring and fall. A camper at Lehmans noted, "We like dispersed sites so we wouldn't have like this park 'in season' when it's packed. That being said we've already decided this will be our first stop when the season starts again!"

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several parks provide dedicated children's areas. At Sycamore RV Resort, visitors note, "Nice lake for fishing and a beach area for the kids to go swimming," making it suitable for family activities.

Swimming options: Pool availability varies by location, with seasonal operations. One family reported about Northwoods: "The pool is very clean and the staff helped us pick a better site upon arrival. They also have a very pretty river to fish."

Activity planning: Entertainment options differ significantly between parks. A visitor to Sycamore RV Resort warns, "It's a nice park, nice good size pool, no jacuzzi, small play ground with a jumping pad. Pond for catch and release fishing," suggesting families check specific amenities before booking.

Tips from RVers

Hookup variations: Electrical service differs between campgrounds with limited full hookup availability. At Thousand Trails Pine Country, "The people that work in the office are very helpful," with assistance in site selection for optimal RV connections.

Site surfaces: Material quality varies significantly between parks, affecting setup and comfort. A Wisconsin State Fair RV Park visitor explains, "Full hookup sites are all blacktop. Not a place for recreation, but good as a base for Milwaukee attractions."

Water quality considerations: Some campers report mineral content in water systems. At Lehmans, "The camp water is high in Iron. The pot roads need service as thay do have a lot of pot holes. Good thing for the 5mph speed limit," suggesting RVers may want to bring drinking water.
