Lots of space by a Lake

RV or tent, book online at Recreation.Gov not all spots are level. Electric on most but not all have water. Campfire area and picnic table provided. Bathhouse is clean and park areas are all clean, dump station on site. We will be back and book closer to the lake in a level site.

    Harmonie State Park Campground

    Top Flight State Park

This is a huge state park! There are lots and lots of campsites in this state park bordering the Wabash River. Sites are divided into smallish areas some for tents, some for RVs and some mixed. Lots of trees for shade. Bathhouses in each area with showers and toilets. Very clean & well maintained. Some areas with children playgrounds. The park has multiple picnic areas and shelters. There are a couple of ponds. There is a boat launch at the Wabash River. There is a good size swimming pool (though closed at my visit for the pandemic). Park sells firewood for individual fire pits at each site. Electric hookups at most tent sites. Water spigots near each bathhouse.

    South Sandusky Campground

    Amazing View

We love tent camping at South Sandusky. many of the site are right on the lake and the sunrise and sunsets are always gorgeous. they have quiet hours from 10-6 and the bathrooms and showers are always really clean (but there are still usually lots of small insects). It’s also just a short drive from the South Sandusky swimming beach. It’s sometimes pretty rocky in the water so we usually wear water shoes. If you camp for the hiking though this isn’t my favorite site. There are lots of bike trails but for just hiking there are much better places.

Headed here after garden of the gods was full. This place is very close to where you need to be. Outpost in between sells food, firewood, ice etc. Very basic campsite for drive up. People were very respectful, very dog friendly. Great places around to hike.

    South Marcum Campground

    Best campground on Rend Lake!

This is hands-down the nicest campground on Rend Lake. With hundreds of sites to choose from with some being tucked into the woods and others sitting right on the lake including some walking intense fights this campground is one of the nicest that you’ll find in Illinois. Plenty of bathrooms and bath houses as well as playgrounds and spacious campsites for larger RVs and plenty of access to the lake.

    Gun Creek

    Great campground by lake

We camped only one night on our way out west. Arrived just as the sun was setting which was beautiful over the lake. We were in Eagle 81. Large wooded site next to the lake. A short hike to the bathroom (we were in tents) and not much grassy area, but plenty of space to pitch 2 small tents. People were quiet and so friendly. Very nice.

    Harmonie State Park Campground

    Indiana Does It Again

A huge campground for both tents and RVs. Electrical but no water connections at each RV site. Hot showers and bathrooms within walking distance of each site. The shower spigots stay on a loooong time so no need to keep pushing for shower stream. Super friendly ranger who let us pay for our site and firewood on our departure morning as the park office was closed. We were there on a Monday and it was super empty. Heard the weekends are crowded as there are several playgrounds and a pool. No laundry.

Guide to Enfield

Camping options near Enfield, Illinois range from basic tent sites to yurt accommodations across multiple state parks and recreation areas. Located in southern Illinois' Shawnee National Forest region, the area experiences distinct seasons with humid summers reaching 90°F and cool winters with temperatures frequently below freezing. The terrain features rolling wooded hills and several lakes, creating diverse camping environments with elevation changes that impact site drainage during the region's frequent spring and fall rain events.

What to do

Hiking at Garden of the Gods: Located near Pounds Hollow Recreation Area, this distinctive rock formation area provides hiking opportunities with spectacular views. "Harmonie State Park has a nature center in the middle of the campground that is open Thursday-Sunday in the summer. There are 3 playgrounds throughout the campground," notes a visitor to Harmonie State Park Campground.

Fishing opportunities: Rend Lake offers abundant fishing options. "We went fishing caught 29 total - 6 catfish and 23 crappie not bad for being gone camping since April 15 to May 30," shares a camper at North Sandusky Campground, highlighting the productive fishing conditions.

Beach activities: Multiple campgrounds feature beach access. "Great rates and even better campsites. We got there late and had no problems finding a great campsite right next to the lake," explains a visitor at Gun Creek, emphasizing the accessibility of waterfront sites.

Historical exploration: The area features significant historical sites. "The cave has some pretty interesting history it was once a hideout for river pirates. It now seems to be frequented by bikers and locals," notes a camper at Cave-in-Rock State Park, describing the unique historical context.

What campers like

Spacious campsites: Many campgrounds offer well-spaced sites. "Most sites are pretty large. Nice pool with water slide. They just need better walking trails," comments a visitor to Harmonie State Park Campground, highlighting the generous site dimensions.

Affordable rates: The region offers budget-friendly camping options. "We are the only campers here in a very well kept campground. The bathrooms are clean and the only sound is from the birds. $20 for a state park site with electricity is incredible," observes a camper at Cave-in-Rock State Park.

Lake views: Many sites feature water vistas. "Beautiful campground, it's our second time here. Some spots do have a fairly good slope to them," shares a visitor to Gun Creek, noting the scenic views while mentioning the terrain variations.

Wildlife viewing: The natural setting supports diverse wildlife. "Harmonie State Park looks like a great place for a family vacation. In addition to the campground with at least 2 playgrounds, there are trails, picnic areas and a boat ramp. Our only problem was 1 or more raccoons kept coming into our site," explains a camper describing the persistent wildlife encounters.

What you should know

Site leveling challenges: Many campgrounds feature uneven terrain. "Overall a great stay, very busy as it was full the entire time we were there while the state park down the road was empty. Absolutely must check how level the spots are before you book, as lots of sites are over 4 inch incline, which seems ok for smaller rigs," advises a camper at Gun Creek.

Yurt camping availability: For those seeking yurt accommodations near Enfield, Illinois, Willow Bend Retreat offers 15 glamping sites including distinctive yurts. "I was more than satisfied with the facilities and service. I would highly recommend to others," notes a visitor to Willow Bend Retreat.

Noise considerations: Highway proximity affects some campgrounds. "Good KOA. Yes, there is highway noise. It's a KOA. Convenience of being easy off an interstate has its tradeoffs. That said, excellent staff, clean, professional KOA," explains a visitor regarding the ambient noise levels.

Weather preparedness: The region experiences variable conditions. "Site 79 is on the lake with a down slope reaching down to the tent/picnic pad (a concern if it was going to rain hard), and littered with sweet gum balls that had not been swept up yet," notes a camper at South Sandusky, highlighting drainage concerns during rainfall.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Multiple campgrounds feature play areas. "Peaceful, family friendly-playgrounds, pool, hiking trails, picnic areas, large camp sites. Cabins available. Electric hookup at trailer sites," mentions a visitor to Cave-in-Rock State Park.

Swimming options: Several locations offer swimming facilities. "This campground is very well kept. There are paved roads the kids can bike on as well as mountain bike trails. Very nice swimming pool. Clean showers with hot water," shares a camper at Harmonie State Park Campground.

Holiday activities: Special events enhance family experiences. "We stayed the weekend before Halloween. We missed reserving the weekend they have the campground trick or treating, which was the weekend before, but this was just as fun. They had a trunk or treat in the pool parking lot and a hayride in the evening for a small fee that included making smores at the bonfire," describes a visitor to Harmonie State Park.

Yurt camping for families: Yurt accommodations near Enfield, Illinois provide comfortable alternatives to tent camping. "North Sandusky Campground is a gem in Southern Illinois. Many of the sites are backed up to Rend lake and the others back up to the woods. The sites all seem to be fairly well maintained and roomy," notes a visitor to North Sandusky Campground.

Tips from RVers

Hookup variations: Sites offer different utility connections. "Using your GPS of choice, you can reach this campground off I-57 via Benton or the IL-154/Sesser exit. Most sites here offer water and electric (50/30/20 AMP), while the Dogwood loop features several full hookup sites in its upper section," explains an RVer at South Sandusky Campground.

Reservation timing: Popular periods require advance planning. "Nice clean campground. Most sites are pretty large. Nice pool with water slide," comments a visitor to Harmonie State Park, which gets fully booked during peak seasons.

Access considerations: Some campgrounds have specific entry requirements. "Note that the loop has low-sloping ditches on both sides of the road, so precise backing is needed to land on the asphalt pad," advises an RVer at South Sandusky Campground regarding navigating larger vehicles.

Overnight conveniences: Some locations work well for transit stops. "Great place to stop for the night! Clean, reasonable and the staff/owners were great! Easy on and off to 64 and 57! Sonic, Subway and Tractor Supply Co a short walk away," notes a visitor to Archway RV Park.
